"Ben Simmons is phenomenal"

No jumper? He's still gonna score, his ballhandling is elite. Passing - elite. Body - elite.

He better than all them rookies from the last two years. Matter of fact he better than Embiid.

When he learns how to shoot, it's gonna be between him and Giannis in the East.

I pray for the East that the sixers can become something along with Milwakuee

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

double the time he spends in the paint and cut the time he spends 18' out facing the basket

ill give him the occasional 3 pointer

and yea i wouldnt put simmons over a never-injured/no minute restrictions embiid, but at this stage its about even. better than lonzo tho

fultz, sorry to say but right from the preseason you could tell he wasnt worth the #1 pick. that u traded up for, at that.
but i'll give him some time

http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/21141852/philadelphia-76ers-rookie-markelle-fultz-had-fluid-drained-shoulder

Philadelphia 76ers guard Markelle Fultz, the top overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft, had fluid drained from his right shoulder and is planning to visit a specialist soon, his agent told ESPN on Tuesday.

"Markelle had a shoulder injury and fluid drained out of the back of his shoulder," agent Raymond Brothers told ESPN. "He literally cannot raise up his arms to shoot the basketball. He decided to try and fight through the pain to help the team. He has a great attitude. We are committed to finding a solution to get Markelle back to 100 percent."

No decision has been made for Fultz to miss games, league sources said.

Fultz had the shoulder drained prior to start of the regular season, which caused him to miss the end of the Sixers' preseason schedule, Brothers said.

I can understand why they wouldn't want another pick to start off the season missing games, but why the fuck is he playing if he can't raise his arm?

wasn't gonna improve otherwise

i understand them potentially not wanting to sit ANOTHER high/#1 pick for injury purposes for a stretch, but dude is obviously hurting w/ that free-throw technique...sit his ass down for a week and a half.

this shoulder misstep is bizarre because...you should never need to restate the agent's report of what an injury is. if anyone knows other than the player and the doc...

The chic fil a stuff, the jumper, the agent bad at PR, it's all a different version of what the lakers dealt with d'angelo. I'm only a little worried. I've said all along that he's a three-year project. He was always going to be bad this year, because rookies are always bad. Granted, he's been worse than I expected because of the jumper, but I assume that's a mental/injury thing he'll get over.

has all the physical tools, elite vision/passing, elite athleticism, once he gets better at finishing around the basket the lack of a jumper won't be as big an issue.

1) I have no agenda and if you think so, link me up to my posts about Ball. I'll wait. I've got no problem at all if he turns in to a superstar.

2) Simmons hasn't generated near the buzz or hype that Ball has for the preseason and start to regular season. Much of that has to do w/ Ball playing in LA though.

3) Relax. It's very easy for someone to enjoy one player while making a slightly negative remark about another - and let's be honest, it wasn't that negative.

hard. Maybe its warranted, maybe not. But you can't dispute the fact that he's gotten way more hype on here and the media relative to his success. I mean, ESPN's headline of last nights game is "Ball, Lakers romp to victory." I mean, cut me a freaking break. Ball went 13 puts/6 boards/3 assists. 5 Lakers had 13 points or more. But yeah, lets push the narrative that he's the whole team. Just one of many, many examples.

Not his fault, but you're lying if you think the coverage has been fair.

If you're a Sixers fan and you see nearly 20 points a game from him, it's a very good sign, because (a) he's finding success at the rim (where he was one of the best in college the last several years) and (b) he's choosing to go inside rather than settling for jump shots. He keeps going in, he'll be hard to contain. He's just too fast for a guy his size and too big for a guy his speed.

I still don't buy the arguments of "once he gets a jumper, it's on!" because the overwhelming majority of players who were bad jump shooters in college remain bad jump shooters in the NBA. The Kawhi Leonards of the world are the exception, not the rule.

People should instead focus on the fact that he'll be an All-Star even without a jumper. Which is true. If I were Simmons, I'd be far more focused on getting my FT% above 70% than I'd be on getting an outside jumper. He should routinely draw 8-10 FT attempts per game for his career.

He doesn't have to be Steph Curry but he can still improve from the outside.

Eventually defenses will start backing off of him and daring him to shoot.

Lebron's jumper was garbage when he first came in. AD & Cuz have both extended their games.

Bron was already shooting above his career 3P% by Year 2, so I think the "trashness" of his early jumper vs. his later jumper has been overhyped. It improved, but not beyond the pale. If anything, his ability to finish inside of ten feet has been what's really improved in an elite way over the years.

The other guys, more appropriate to compare to Simmons height-wise, have been extending since the moment they arrived in the NBA.

AD and Cuz both took 65% of their shots inside 10 feet their rookie years. (Bron took a mere 48%.)
Simmons is taking 73%.

AD and Cuz also both took 22.5% of their shots outside of 16 feet their rookie years. (Bron took 35%.)
Simmons is taking 9%.

Limited sample size for Simmons, obviously, but the same was true in college for Davis and Cuz vs. Simmons. They've shown more desire to take those shots. (I'd also place Cousins alongside someone like Leonard in terms of being anomalously terrific in terms of jump shot growth over the years.)

I don't doubt that he'll attempt to work on the distance jumper, but until teams can repeatedly prove they can limit his effectiveness and keep him outside of ten feet on offense, I don't see why he should start chucking mid-rangers and 3s now. You weren't drafted #1 overall for your shot-making, you were drafted #1 because you're a beast at finishing inside, and you have elite vision, handles, and slipperiness for a guy your size. Pick your spots, play smart winning basketball, and work on that free throw stroke in practice, as that should also help with the mid-ranger as a side effect.

I also don't think many defenders are going to cheat down against Simmons effectively, because Simmons has the speed/handles/vision to simply drive into or back down into the cheating defender and run the offense from the interior, kicking out to shooters or looking for cutters. Simmons is big and agile enough that he'll likely draw the help, so he'll find the open man-- and if the defense doesn't help, then you're leaving a defender one-on-one against a guy who is both really quick for his size and really efficient inside of ten feet. They'll try to do that, but the number of defenders who can slow Simmons 1v1 is certainly low. Again, if I'm his coaching staff, I'm telling him to keep doing what he's been doing.

an example that most people are familiar with about someone have to improve their shot.

I wasn’t saying Simmons is Lebron James but if that’s what y’all want take from it go ahead lol.

The point is no matter how quick and skilled he is with the ball for his size if he doesn’t develop and outside shot to keep teams honest teams will pack the paint and take away his drives and that will make things harder for Embiid too.

Embiid is going to draw a double team everytime he's on the block

Triple teams are also being used, but less frequent

he sets up on one side of the lane

our 6'10" PG dives to the rim

= easy buckets

This isn't a Bron situation

you have to double 2 guys

1 who's position on the floor is top of the key

the other is setting up in the paint

another issue with packing the paint is we have shooters too

JJ, RoCo and Saric can all hit the 3

High pick and rolls with Al B Simmons and The Process

defenders are getting caught up in the wash

= easy buckets for our 6'10" PG to drive to the bucket

if the defenders roll with Al B Simmons

he leaves the ball for The Process top of the key 3

Packing the lane with a handful of undersized defenders won't help you.

---------------------------------------------------------------

If you can't understand it without an explanation

you can't understand it with an explanation

They need Fultz to come through, absolutely, and better guard play in general.

If you stack the inside though, this team can make you pay. Reddick and Saric can both shoot, they have some other adequate shooters, too. I think outside shooting is no longer a major issue for the Sixers, it's more having a guy to handle the ball to protect leads late in games and also having someone who can run the second unit (or being able to split Embiid/Simmons up a bit more, which another star would do).

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

i think once he gets a better feel for decision-making he will become more productive and more efficient. his shot will get better, how much better remains to be seen but he doesn't have trash form, he just doesn't have great touch yet. i could easily seeing him bein a 25/8/6 guy on 50-ish percent from the field, which are great numbers.

Fun watching his confidence grow. He yammed on the Clips 4 times in the first quarter last night. He is starting to figure out he can get to the hole at will.

PS - his defense is way ahead of schedule. I am pleasantly surprised.

seasons

guess we'll find out with how they handle Fultz

...but...

this team can win

they can make the playoffs

I'm hoping the culture changes from win tomorrow to win today

and if there are health issues with players, they are motivated enough to get back on the floor and contribute to a winning culture

instead of just giving up on entire seasons

3rd year playing

utah is trash, but their defense is a pain in the ass to play against. sixers were out of rhythm all night, and embiid was exhausted (sit him next game please) and settling for jumpers.

but ben put us on his back in the third quarter. fuck a jumper, we needed points and he got us points. the best thing is how he uses his intelligence, ball handling, and length to find all matter of finger roll and weird angle lays ups.

a point guard that won't shoot outside of 10 feet can be stopped... he'll get some triple doubles because of his size and passing, but teams will sag waaaaay off him and disrupt passing lanes....

10-10-10 games are cool..... but the first overall pick, playing PG needs to expand his game beyond what it currently is.

he's in the weight room.... Injured for a lot of the year, but showed what type of versatility he has..... the group of 19 year olds entering the league now don't come in ready made...

but I'll certainly keep my hand with Lonzo over Fultz unfortunate situation with his shot, and the fact that Ben Simmmons simply won't/can't shoot the ball outside of the paint....

Ben has his issues, no doubt

But I think the biggest issue is being miscast as a left handed point guard

He still has potential...but I think he'd be better served on a team where he can run as a small ball 5

Really hope he gets moved in the off-season for an actual PF

Obviously, this isn't working
