From the outside looking in, the national sports media would have you believe that Orgeron was the very last resort, that he's on a short leash, and that he's not organized enough to compete much less field a contender at this level...

But by all accounts the locals are ecstatic with the hire. Obviously, there's a feel-good prodigal son narrative here that can't be ignored.

So what's the ACTUAL vibe on the ground in Tiger nation?

i don't think OSU wins the NC in 2014 if he doesn't go down...sad to say it.

OSU DL is filthy. every bit as good as advertised.

same for JK dobbins. him and weber will be a great 1-2 punch.

at the end of the day I just don't have any faith that JT can get the team where it needs to be. would be happy to be wrong.

meanwhile, wisky wound up looking quite a bit better than washington did vs big 10 doormat rutgers...lol.

pointing out how soft the PAC is doesn't equate to rooting for the big 10 or trolling for the conference like you do with sec/pac. big 10 fans don't care about each other. period.

meanwhile, wisconsin won 59-10 so feel free to pop your shit!

and plenty of backwood yokels in AZ...

And the way they shitted on Strong was wild foul and the way they glorify Herman is worse.

I think they're both good coaches.

But they're building Herman up on the back of Strong, and I'm not riding for that. These white tears are delicious.

Shaggybevo is STILL blaming Strong for today's mess.
Charlie Strong isn't running an empty backfield on 3rd and 2 with a 255 lb RB today. But hey. Mensa.

And I disagree that Strong was objectively bad. None of the issues with Strong AREN'T on display today.

Special teams problems, limitations on third downs, blown assignments.
All signifying lack of depth and consistency.

When Strong took over his BEST players were true freshmen. OL and LB included. He built this program back from a gutted team. You shouldn't be starting multiple true freshmen on an OL and if you are, they can't be your best players.

Which if this isn't your team you shouldn't be. But to downplay a significant portion of the problems shows your lack of interest. Which doesn't make it relevant, just not relevant to you.

But that's like your opinion man.

Charlie Strong's race had a huge part in failures here. By what metrics are you saying it was time to move on?
Was it talent? He only had two full recruiting seasons, that's not even enough in basketball
Was it competition? He went 1-2 against our biggest rival, one in which they were ranked, and was competitive in every game
Was it lack of progress? We started a true freshman QB last year due to again ... only two full offseasons of recruiting.

This couldn't happen to a nicer fan base with a racist booster. It's a shame the preseason rankings are based on the amount of money boosters spent or plan to spend on training facilities.

For Texas losing to Maryland but Texas does have some rebuilding to do as a program.

Learning a new offensive system, still a young team, and lost one of the best backs in the country to the NFL. Texas shouldn't have been ranked going into this season.

I don't think anyone that posts has any unreasonable expectations of Strong, Herman, or this team. I'm more speaking to the fanbase.

The same things that you mentioned were concerns that were true of Strong, but Herman will get a longer rope than Strong did. And that's just a truism.

New head coach, new young and inexperienced QB getting his first start on the road, flying cross country, and an early start time and we found a way to win.

UNC is breaking in a new QB and players but they are a real opponent and not a cupcake at home so this was a good test for the young California Golden Bears.

Cal actually seems to have a decent defense, they won't be in the top third of the PAC 12 but they should improve to a middle tier defense which would be a huge improvement over the last three seasons under Dykes.

this is an even worse prediction than last year with you claiming that mich had the best defense/secondary in the country (never mind that team in tuscaloosa)

all this confidence after beating a perennial horrible offensive team missing their 2 best offensive players. hilarious.

your #1 pass efficiency defense in the nation last year...Michigan

http://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fbs/2016/team/40

>all this confidence after beating a perennial horrible

Hurst has played like an All American for 2 years now and is easily the best interior pass rusher in college football. 34 pressures on 173 pass rushes is quantifiably number 1 at te position. PFF also calls him a first round pick.

Winovich is the 3rd most productive returning pass rushing DE in the NCAA after Landry and Bosa, and Bosa is a whopping 0.3 ahead of him.

Gary is Gary, and is on the path of all consensus #1 recruits - superstardom at a 100% success rate. Hes a true sophomore who was also a top 20 national pass rusher.

Ignoring numbers because they are distasteful to you is not a solid basis for debate. Also, since neither one of those best players were OL im gonna assume that wasnt going to help them do much better than 0.4 ypc

I've already explained why a team averaging 5 less passing yards per game isn't some sort of objective trump card. nobody would ever agree with your assessments, and certainly not NFL scouts.

whats also quite hilarious is that you somehow think that a starting RUNNING BACK wouldn't have an impact defensive rushing statistics, lol. same goes for missing a star wr but to a lesser degree.

i also remember (after you calling schiano a bad hire) that OSU defense shutting down oklahoma in their building wasnt a big deal...but now you want to crown mich the best D in the country after shutting down florida w/o their 2 best players, lol.

I'll also be interested to see where maurice hurst is drafted relative to guys like dexter lawrence, ed oliver, dremont jones, etc.

i dont need anyone to agree with anything. i said UM had the best secondary in the country, and they ended up as the most efficient pass defense in the country. what else is there to say? NFL scouts made Jared Goff the #1 pick in the draft last year and your problem is with me and my 3 months worth of accumulated statistics? sure guy lol. let me guess, the moon landing was faked, vaccines cause autiam, and the flat earth theory is sounding pretty good to you right about now?

LMAO who the fuck is Jordan Scarlett? That sub 900 yard season last year really made a believer out of you? Hes no star and the backups arent high school JV players. Gimme a fuckin break lol.

uh no. i said the line is the best. And Hurst, Gary, and Winovich have at least 15 games of track record. 28 in Hurst's case. Again, people use numbers to keep track of things now.

well Hurst already had a 1st round grade from PFF and others but im more interested in watching him collect sacks and doing his belly dance after TFLs. you and Mel Kiper have fun with the rest.

and never leave their state to play a game until november.

you hold that as some sort of trump card because your squad are objective losers on the field and on draft night.

when you say that jordan lewis is the best corner in the country or B1G or whatever you said...and then 3 osu db's get drafted ahead of him in the FIRST ROUND well then you look stupid.

when you say that greg schiano was a bad hire and his defenses won't be any better than 'good' you look stupid.

when you say that brady hoke was a good hire for DC you look stupid.

when you say that mich is as good as bama and then lose the last 3 of 4 games of the season you look stupid.

i could go on.

>

feel free to quote me where i said he was a 'star'. i said he was the starter, ie., better than anyone else on the team and if you don't think that effects your ypc then there really isnt much left to discuss.

no ill have fun watching my squad beat yall for the 15th time in the last 17 years and listening to harbaugh cry and blame the rest of the world for why he can't finish any better than 3rd in his own division.

I'm talking tackles in the backfield every single play. If you don't, we're boating racing you. Saquon is special, and trace mcsorely aka scrap metal aka scrap Jesus is brilliant and able in the read option. If you can't get in the backfield with four, you're going to start to have to cheat. If you have to cheat, saquon will bust one on you, and scrap metal will start chucking deep balls.

Now, osu & Michigan might be able to achieve that point of attack domination. I ultimately think osu will handle us relatively easily because they rely on four for pressure. Michigan likes to blitz a lot, which is not the move against us. Also, lolz at Michigan losing all four starters and "having the best defensive line in the country."

If McSorley can continue to improve, the sky's the limit with this offense. This is the most balanced and dangerous offense since the '94 team.

McSorley is one of those guys you know will probably never have a chance at the next level, but will be Great in CFB. He's tough as nails and surprisingly throws a great deep ball. The fact that he's athletic, can run and take a hit just makes him all that much more valuable to the offense. Barkley is obviously that dude. Gisecki is a matchup nightmare for defenses and we got a DEEP WR corps.

As good as the offense looked though, I was actually more impressed with the defense.

bama didn't get anything with their front four the first series. Payne doubled and the rest of them are being manned up.

big if but bama's defense won't be able to sit back and bait. looks like they'll have to be the aggressor and take chances tonight.

they couldn't score of the two early turns and generally couldn't move the ball. too much for the D to hold Watson with 2 minutes left since they hadn't really done that consistently.

tonight's game was similar. the offense couldn't score on several short field situations.

Y'all buy those labels, I was born supreme

only in some twisted version of reality does a defense stocked with NFL talent and who beat its chest all year as the best in college football (...history) not get blamed for losing that game.

bama defense gave up 35 points. bama offense scored 31, for all its warts. think about that. defense crying about stalled drives because their offense didn't score 41 points.

bama offense scored what should've been the game-winning touchdown with 2 minutes left in the game. bama defense let Clemson drive 70 yards, in the fourth quarter, protecting a lead, with the national title on the line, with one of the best defensive coaches in NCAA history, and could not get a stop.

THEY FUCKING CHOKED.

Its Bama and Saban where you have a chance to win the title pretty much every year. Why cant he convince the top tier QBs to come play there? Just seems strange to me.

Granted JMU is an elite FCS team, that's funny as shit that they get paid off alladat (c).

And ECU has a huge home field advantage. Big stadium in a somewhat remote area with a pretty rabid fan base.

Keith Ford had been hurting UCLA defenders on the last offensive series, so what does A&M do when they get an interception returned to the Bruins' three-yard-line?

two shitty fades by the true freshman QB, then a third down run by Ford that goes two yards of course. bad football makes me sad...

offensive line can't get any push. even with a hole, running backs can't make anyone miss. receivers can't get open nor catch anything when they do. Rosen is hitting 38% of his passes. and all his attempts are dump-offs or downfield drops (5.9 YPA).

never mind the fact A&M ran for 300 yards in the first half despite not showing any threat of the pass.

aTm defensive player should have had an interception but let's the ball go right through his hands and the UCLA WR catches it and scores for a 50 yard TD.

Kevin Sumlin might be fired this week if he finds a way to lose this game.

when you're up 13 with 4 minutes left. The kids played plenty well enough to win. Normal run run punt with your backup QB. But bad clock management gave UCLA a ton of extra plays they shouldn't have had. Great game and great performance by Rosen, though. That's an all-timer. Damn. What a game.

your LB situation appears to be less than ideal, but UM is still riding high on the work Hoke did to the D-Line. our O-Line is stout up the middle, but the tackles are new.

our DL did very litle without blitz help last year, but KeShun Freeman is a player and your LT is out? even a moderate amount of pressure gives our veteran secondary a chamce to make plays.

i dont know if the turf helps anyone in particular altho live ball fumbles will take bounces and that could be a problem for us.

im ready

for either side. Tennessee should be worried about GT's offense because they historically have never done well against any sort of option. Kirkland Jr. is a big loss because he is one of their few dynamic players. the other linebackers have played a lot of football and may read their keys to perfection, but aren't as talented when it comes to 1v1 match-ups.

I figure both UT quarterbacks will play and one will have to get going. because Tennessee doesn't figure to win a defensive, ride John Kelly type sluggo. they need to threaten early and play with a lead.

Gaurantano is a better fit for Jones' offense, but since last year everyone has wondered if Dormandy can actually fling it. Dobbs was a warrior but never much for accuracy.

- UT defense getting hurt up the middle on the last scoring drive. that opens up everything for GT.

- that said, drive would've been over if not for a horrible bust on the 3rd and 12 pass. cover three with 12 yards to go...the underneath safety doesn't get 10 yards deep and the corner is bailing 20 yards downfield. so you leave a gap at 12 yards on a 3rd and 12. great job.

- Dormady had people open but missed them. then he started forcing it. GT is going to slant and run blitz and force the QB to make plays; big problem is OL can't hold the line and Dormady is struggling to step up into clean spaces or see the pressure.

- good news for GT is they only kick-off again if they score. bad news is their kicker has no leg in a dome. Berry is the best KO returner in the country.

- Dormady has thrown at least three interceptable passes. he has the ability to make things happen, as shown by that scoring drive, but he has got to set his damn feet. nobody who plays QB can just stand on a spot every snap, take those mini-steps to move up and around rushers without breaking the pocket.

- Tennessee defense is just getting demoralized. even when they're in the right spot, they're getting hit first and ran over for another 2 to 3 yards after contact.

- third down! you're not beating any team giving up 8/11 third downs. worst of all, GT has converted 3/3 of those with 7 or more yards to go. GT would have 3 points at most if Tennessee made a stop on any of those. first was a coverage bust, second and third were linebackers not doing their damn job (you don't fucking rush the their QB on third and long if you're spying him).

- GT getting the ball to open the half is scary. another 7 minute drive and Tennessee will be grasping on both sides. Guarantano could give the offense that read-option element that Butch loves, especially if Jennings is done.

I hate when teams get undisciplined when momentum starts going the other way

that's a sign of bad coaching

- Dormady with a huge drive. that was needed.

- DEFENSE YOU GOT TO HIT SOMEBODY. Tennessee is tackling with their upper bodies only. swarm. get mad. they're all worn out but it's team-wide.

- Shoop is not earning his money. GT is out-athleting the second level. time to take risks and throw in run blitzes and twists, because this shit hasn't worked for 2 straight quarters.

Isn't the rule in the NFL that a kicker can only be iced once. CFB ought to adopt that rule.

go for two to win right there, especially since GT will be on defense first in the second OT. Tennessee hasn't stopped the GT offense since the back-up QB came into the game for two plays.

great character by the offense. defense made at least one stop when it mattered.

TaQuon Marshall is going to tear up the ACC, what a stud.

if GT had actually needed to throw it more than a few times tonight, he probably would've had 500 total yards himself. his few passes were strikes.

and he's right. GT had outflanked Tennessee on that side; six to four. they had four blockers and two ball carriers (QB/RB) against four defenders. that's easy money for any team.

GT fucked the blocking angles though. so even with a horrible alignment Tennessee got lucky.

2 turnovers were the game.

500 fucking rushing yards and a star making performance from Taquon Marshall and a loss. wouldn't have thought it possible this morning.

the stiff and solid tackling of the first half didnt carry over. missed tackles and turnovers.

fuck.

TaQuon is a goddamned monster, the slotbacks are the best weve had under PJ, and every goal is still in play

Need someone to make some big plays on defense. There were many pickable balls that ended up on the turf, and zero sacks on 37 dropbacks is pathetic.
