This is easily the worst free agency period I can remember as a Cavs fan:

Bron doing his micro aggressive positioning to leave shit by not committing to the team beyond next year.

Griff gone because Comic Sans Dan returned from hiatus.

The Ky trade rumors speak for themselves

Our bench is shit and that is what we need to fix but we're cash strapped. Now we about to trade KLove for some gyros, some Honor 9s, and a few iPad Pro 10.5s.

Meh, we fucked and the sky is falling fast as shit.

Meanwhile the Lakers looking like a prime destination for young talent eager to build a winning culture. Really forward to what Magic and coach Walton have in store for our team.

In response to Reply # 5

If you're a young player name a better team to play for:

Lonzo, Julius, Ingram, Swaggy P, Ron Artest, TRob, Larry Nance Jr, and Jordan.
It's some ^^^ room in here to earn a spot.

Mamba's legacy

Lakers legacy

The championship DNA of the organization. Last year they showed promise early on but now that the distraction was traded away from the locker room things should improve even more.

Like I said, WE PROMISING and attractive to young players.

In response to Reply # 49

but he's got a great role in SA and he probably puts a high premium on that. Mills has a lot more flaws than others may be aware of. He doesn't do a great job of creating his own shot and can be a bit too boom or bust at times with shooting. He also isn't that dynamic of a defender. But, he sure can shoot and has a high motor.

I was low key hoping the Spurs would pursue Hill because I think he'd be an awesome pairing with Kawhi and give the team the best possible chance to defend the Warriors.

There's a lot of uncertainty with Parker's health and while I love the potential I see in D.Murray, we don't know yet what we have in him. So to me, resigning Mills makes a lot of sense. I'm guessing he left a good 3-5 mill per year on the table though.

not even in the same league

Sixers could use another shooter, it wouldn't hurt cap because it's not long term and we need some vets.

Amir on the other hand would just fuck up the rotation for Dario and Holmes

overpay excess cap room for a year. you can't overcommit to bridge players. they prove to be worth keeping around, negotiate a longer deal at a fair term. but be cautious. for one year JJ would be nice, obviously they need shooting. for a while he was not so one-dimensional but now he's back to being pretty one-dimensional. but they lack that dimension.

In response to Reply # 43

On the surface, I get it that the team desperately needs outside shooting and Reddick would fill that role. But this team is built for the future and spending $20 million on an aging, one dimensional player seems like a waste of resources to me. Couldn't that $ be better served front loading contracts for Embiid and Cov?

Also, the 76ers are now officially bringing in Kormaz Furkan so he kinda fills that role as an outside shooter.

I just don't like the idea of taking away mins from these young guys. Let them develop. The team ain't winning a chip now or next year, but they most certainly have positioned themselves to be a real threat (assuming good health) in just a few years.

NHL has the over-35 rule, now the NBA has the over-38 rule.

The two-way contract idea (which I have been saying for at least ten years needed to happen) is finally a thing, along with team-controlled minor-league teams in a full, complete sense.

when is the last time he played 75 games? five years ago? they can live with the amount of time he has missed in the last couple of years, but any more than that and this deal will look bad.

Still... nobody else was gonna pay that much imo.

He's a good player 15-20 mil is no chump change, but 5-125?

He hasn't led the team to the playoffs or any significant playoff run. Go throw 2/12 at collision or even rondo- or just pay jrue less

Wife's illness not injury. Even still i get the concern.

I feel there was def a market for him at 20 mil plus. I dont like the 5th year, but they had to bring hin back.

if he can play 65+ games a year, OK, you can live with it. But generally players get more banged up, not less, as they age

i guess lowry and hill had limited interest

In response to Reply # 83

I'm sure JJ was looking for at least 16-18 per on a multi-year deal but that just isn't the market this off-season...so he goes with the 1 year deal that significantly outstrips any other offer and helps Philly fill not only their shooting need but also a great veteran leader. In the meantime, JJ gets paid huge for a year and is able to shop himself again for a final contract next summer.

who cares if they waste money on redick and amir johnson this year? they were probably not going hit the cap floor (again) at the rate they were going. you essentially end up spending that much no matter what. if this and johnson were three-year deals, i would shit. as it is, fuck it, try to get some experienced professionals and a balanced lineup out there.

In response to Reply # 83

and as others mentioned, he will be a tremendous asset as a leader and mentor to the young guys - which is basically 95% of the team. I know Reddick's fam has a place in BK, but I'm surprised he genuinely wanted to go to Philly. I thought he liked being on the Clips.

It's a good signing considering they have no obligations beyond this year thus keeping lots of flexibility to extend their young guys. I think Philly had something crazy like $50 mil in cap space this year. Gotta spend it somewhere.

That deal started at 12 per with a partial guarantee in year 3 (similar to Livingston) but unlike Shawn, Iggy decided to get paid fairly and used the leverage of other deals (Houston namely from what I understand) to get that 3/48, guaranteed.

Dude has always been extremely intelligent and this was yet another example.

Bulls reportedly have no interest in him and any reports of them signing him are false.

Wouldn't put it past BarfPacks to sign him for no reason but the Bulls already have enough PGs and need to develop their young players while tanking for a top 5 pick in the next two years.

high income and property taxes, shit even sales tax is like 16%. in some latin american countries they have IVA (tax on goods, restaurants, etc) but that shit is included in the price and it's still reasonable. shopping in canada when the loonie surged ahead of the dollar was rough. drinking was expensive AF, too.

In the meantime, let's see if CP3 is willing to sacrifice his super-max next year which was a key reason why CP3 wanted to traded - Houston retains his bird rights. Don't forget, this is the same cat who locked DJ in his house and pitched him on their future...only then to leave himself lol.

But who is going to shoot the ball?

Not Butler. Or Taj. Teague? Wiggins? Bjelicia? That sounds . . . not great. Need some shooters on the wing at some point.

Also, this definitely means the end of the Shabazz Muhammad era in Minny.

as Dunny just got released so he's on the market and works great as a back up shooter (plays good team D, decent rebounder, doesn't make a ton of dumb mistakes), but you should be happy as fuck right now.

You guys have two of the bulls best players for the last 3 years, added Teague who in the right circumstances is a beast.

For a team that lost 22 games when having a double digit lead at some point in the game, that won't happen nearly as much now. You have great 2 way vets that will help the young guys hold those leads.

let's say they go 18-4 in those 22 losses, they are 49-33 this year. And I think they'll be that good or better next season.

I'm with LeroyBumkin...I'll be watching you guys a lot next season.

Maybe you feel compelled to project Middleton into this list and think Parker's earned it; if you think a lot of the young guys in the conference are ready for the next level you can feel a little better about the state of things but on paper it looks real ugly.

Since he had success with Melo but under extremely frustrating circumstances. Melo's handling of D'Antoni and Linsanity is my second biggest frustration with his career after his impatience to join the Knicks gutting all the future potential of that roster and before that flameout against the Lakers in the WCF.

The other being that if they trade Eric Gordon their guard situation is suddenly crazy thin, and New York would only take Ryan Anderson as a building block for a rebuild as a favor (which I wouldn't rule out) or because they have literally zero other offers.

If I'm D'Antoni I'm taking a tape of the USA-Spain game from London 2012 to any meeting I have with Melo and tell him if he's not gonna do THAT, he can shove off. But if he's going to play that role, he's going to get his ring.

Now, it may be that Billups could have bargained for a higher salary, but figured that there would be a good chance that LeBron bounces after this season, so he didn't even bother.

and hope it happens.

I wouldn't mind a one year flyer on Waiters if we can get both, but I'm betting we spend it all on Hill.

Not a bad get if he signs for one year and we go into next season a much better team w/Hill and Brook. We ad Waiters? We could mess around and win 35 games.

Yes, that would be exciting right now lol.

Take less money now to get it all back later.

Apparently if he opts out at the end of next season, he'll be eligible for the Supermax deal. Which the Dubs will give him.

Get these chips. Then get this money.

This is a max player taking a significantly less money to lessen an owner's tax bill. They could still pay Iggy and Livingston. They still only have the taxpayer exception and minimum deals to fill out the roster. He can still get his supermax next offseason.

under the CBA guidelines, durant taking less than his eligible max allowed the warriors to operate as a "capspace" team (meaning they could then exceed the cap to resign their own UFAs) rather than an "over the cap" team (which would have allowed only exceptions to try to bring everyone back)

so it wasn't just a matter of saving the owner some money. if durant takes his max, it limits what they can offer iggy/livingston (not at the owner's discretion but due to the CBA) and likely would have cost them one if not both, due to more lucrative offers from other capspace teams.

so he left significant money (~$10M) on the table for the sake of team over self. we can be cavalier and cynical about it, but it was an actual sacrifice.

I wonder what they do now.. They still got Chandler Parsons awful contract on the books smh

I think they'll win 53-56 games next year, but without cheating the point differential like they did this year. And maybe they can get the Cavs to a sixth game.

I do feel bad for Tatum and Brown, though. Unless Crowder, Avery, or smart goes, there's no place either of them to get the minutes they need to develop, let alone both.

1. He gets to compete for the ecf instead of slogging through a West that just got tougher on the bottom half of the playoff bracket. That's a major change if you're Hayward.

2. Boston still has a shit ton of assets to use to improve around him. Signing GH probably makes Moony much less reluctant to part with a quality hail of assets for a player. He could trade for a star tomorrow with what he currently has and still have a high lottery pick or two next year and GH is probably the domino he wanted to fall before dealing from the treasure chest.

3. Brawn doesn't look like he's sticking around.

So yeah, this could very well be the catalyst that changes quite a bit.

This definitely ensures that Boston wins the division and reaches the ECF again, neither of which was a lock. They are one pulled hamstring or broken toe on LeBron's body away from the finals. Also consider how it sets them up long-term. They gave no assets. They have two top five picks on their roster plus an established contributor entering his prime. Normally I would be the first to whooptydamndoo a Boston move but this is a good one.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

It's funny like in hockey offer sheeting a player is almost frowned upon between GMs in many situations. And there you get compensation if you don't match, in some cases very good compensation that a lot of NBA teams would love (potentially four first-round picks). In the NBA the other team just has to match while you grind your feet and yell "FUCK 'YO CAP!" but no one seems to care.

Wiz have never ever paid it.

They still have big contracts coming up in future seasons...which would mean more tax. If you don't think you can win it all withbthsi squad (truthnis realistically you can't/won't) but it's such a bad PR move (+ you get bitched out by the Nets) not to match-- so you're in between a rock and a hard place.

They can play hard ball and drag this out for brooklyn so brooklyns money sitied up for like 5 days. At this point Thai shot a huge deal to me though as the free agent market is shrunk up and there isn't anyone else is offer big money tobthats worth it. Even with that max offer in they have about 15 milly to take on salary dumps like Jonas or go after someone like Olynk or if Boston dumps smart or crowder

If I understood Woj's report correctly, they give up a Wizards second-rounder and get Houston's first plus Crawford and Stone? And some guap? Must be nice, assuming this is a fallout of losing Thrillsap.

The Clippers replace an aging Crawford with a useful player, unfortunate that they lose a recuperated first-rounder but you can get those late-round picks when the right guy is there, I guess. I like DG but he is hurt a lot. When healthy, they have needed a player like this. If they still had a point guard this would be more exciting, of course. Had you plugged him into a lineup with CP3, Cro and Redick--let's say instead of Austin Rivers--then you'd be in business. Just bringing him in to be part of an overhyped frontcourt with ass cheese for guards doesn't do much for me.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

"Don't fuck with the Jews" (c) Daniel Craig in "Munich"

Good pick up. Instant offense off the bench. Good at shooting 3s. The Curry/Casspi shoot-out from late 2015 is semi-legendary out here. He'll take Ian Clark's role on the team.

This also probably means the end of the Warriors' pursuit of Swaggy P. So we're probably going to use the mid-level exception on signing a big man. Maybe give ZaZa a better deal than last season. Or Javale, if he doesn't sign with the Heats, Clippers, or Suns.

pretty heavy handed. the fair points i think are that he did develop very much under snyder and the city did embrace him. that said, boston is a better team in a weaker conference, the relationship is there with stevens and the embrace was a slooooooow process. they booed him on draft day and there was a lot of fuss made when the jazz made the very obvious decision to match charlotte's offer. i am sure he didn't forget those things when it came time to commit (or not) to SLC over a better situation.

Figured the Casspi signing meant no Young, but glad to have him aboard too. More offense off the bench. And if he plays D like he did last season, even better.

Nick gets to move to a team without a young gossipy gabriela. He joins the champions in line for another title next year and gets another pay day in the offseason. Good for him.

i mean, both of them strike me as some scrubby ass gunners. scrubby ass gunners don't usually play their role.

there will be at least 3 games where one of the big 3 should be getting that last shot but Swaggy will jack it up instead.

If we had one issue last year, it was offense of the bench. Both of these guys will give us some of that.

>i mean, both of them strike me as some scrubby ass gunners.
>scrubby ass gunners don't usually play their role.

This isn't the Kings or the Nets. We're talking about guys who are #10 and #11 on the team's depth chart. If either go for dolo, they'll get benched.

>there will be at least 3 games where one of the big 3 should
>be getting that last shot but Swaggy will jack it up instead.

Haha. I seriously doubt that. For one, if he's coming here, he knows the Warriors aren't going to deal with any attitude issues he exhibited in the past. Besides the culture here is strong: he'll adapt to the Warriors, the Warriors aren't going to adapt to him.

And, besides, if it's a really close game, Young isn't going to be on the floor to shoot the last shot.

Was looking around earlier and haven't seen much in terms of his free agency. Gotta be due for a decent paycheck somewhere.

I can't wait for him to come back to Belmont with the trophy at some point this upcoming season. Dude was amazing to watch in college...absolutely surreal to see him on the same bus as Steph Curry during the parade.

He had a very good year and a very good play-offs. He might as well have yelled "Ka-Ching!" after every bucket he made.

So, yeah, I can't imagine a scenario where he would come back. And I think everyone around here has known it for months now. I'm happy to let dude get his money. Bazemore got a pretty sizable deal a few years ago; Ian Clark is worth at least what he got, probably more. And I'll cheer for him when he returns to Oracle.

He responded extremely well to the personable and give-take coaching style of Luke which Kerr is known for.

Good perimeter defender, only one of 3 guys to shoot over 43% on spot-up 3's with over 5 attempts (Steph and Klay being the other 2), and can attack off the dribble as well.

If you're an NBA Twitter junkie then you recognize the names Adrian Wojnarowski and Shams Charania. Last month, the two NBA news-breaking journalists were working together at Yahoo's The Vertical, but the man known as Woj left the platform to join media giant ESPN on July 1.

The first of July was the start of NBA free agency, which is a perfect date to break down Woj's reporting since joining his new home. And people who are paying attention have noticed the coveted Woj Bombs aren't as explosive as they once were.

Since everything about NBA free agency gets dissected, we may as well break down the reporting of it. A simple scroll down each of their Twitter timelines helps us determine who broke news first.

Below are the results since midnight July 1:

Wojnarowski: Tony Snell, Patty Mills, Jrue Holiday, Langston Gallaway, JJ Redick, Amiri Johnson, Serge Ibaka, Nene, Ben McLemore.

Charania: Stephen Curry, Blake Griffin, Jeff Teague, Christiano Felicio, PJ Tucker, Taj Gibson, Jodie Meeks, Kyle Korver, Justin Holiday, Paul Millsap.

A few disclaimers: Charania was the first to report the numbers of the Curry deal, saying the contract was being finalized, Woj reported when the deal was done. We gave it to Charania for having the numbers.

Woj reported the numbers on Andre Iguodala, but the Warriors player scooped everyone by reporting the news himself first.

If you look at the names, you'll see plenty more All-Star caliber players on Charania's side (Curry, Griffin, Teague, Millsap) than Woj's. While Woj is still very much in the loop, Charania has been impressive since his predecessor departed.

https://twitter.com/AdamJosephSport/status/881715371169898496

Shams having himself a Russell Westbrook type of season, loses his fellow star & just goes supernova while Woj joins the Warriors (ESPN).

— Adam Joseph (@AdamJosephSport) July 3, 2017

Even the names Charania got before Woj don't really paint the full picture of how much the new ESPN reporter has been this offseason. He missed perhaps the biggest move of free agency when new colleague Ramona Shelburne broke the Paul George trade news.

https://twitter.com/ogbobbyjindal/status/881715624006832128

Woj on yahoo vs Woj on espn. https://pic.twitter.com/LZpXBq7Xxm

— . (@ogbobbyjindal) July 3, 2017

Part of why Woj hasn't been as effective could have to do with all of his new duties at ESPN. He's having to make appearances on SportsCenter to talk about NBA news and has a lot more tasks than just being a breaking news reporter.

Some are theorizing it's a play by Woj in order to get ESPN to go after Charania once his Yahoo contract expires. Another conspiracy is that people are leaking info to Charania instead because they're upset by Woj's move to ESPN.

https://twitter.com/TrapAHolic__/status/881698519245094912

Woj was a system player RT @Scott_CEOofSUH: Shams been lowkey beating Woj to the punch since Woj went to ESPN

— Trap (@TrapAHolic__) July 3, 2017

Whatever the case, people have noticed the dropoff in production from Woj. We'll see how much longer this continues. ESPN execs went after Woj so they wouldn't have to credit other news outlets for big moves, and early on it's not paying off quite as well as they'd hoped.

That Woj guy is painfully awkward on camera. I'm not just talking about his outward looks either; he constantly takes odd pauses when he talks and it's almost as if dude is a deer caught in headlights whenever he's on the screen. Not to say he doesn't have his contacts with folks within the league, but I'm not too sure if it was wise for ESPN to dump all those on air NBA staff they already had and hunker down all the boatload of dollars into this dude.

Perhaps he will warm up to the camera with time, but so far, I think he should stick to the keyboards and away from the cable TV screen.

Nobody wanted to go there and bringing in a guy who pissed off everyone in both Portland and NY seemed like it was going to be a disaster. Instead he turned himself around and brought respectability to the Grizz within a couple years.

People are gonna shit on them for doing this, but I absolutely see how he's considered *that* important to fans in Memphis. Good move on the team's part.

I'm guessing that's his longest tenured team (til now I didn't realize it was 8 years wtf) - he revitalized his career, became an all star, and helped get them to the WCF - as well as just make them a continual playoff team. Nobody should shit on this. He totally changed his narrative in Memphis.

that contract makes it a tough pill to swallow.
Wiz fans say they have to match because the Wiz dont have cap space anyway (able to sign Otto because of Bird Rights)
but

-This takes the Wiz into Luxury tax of about 16 mil a yr i believe - next year itll go even higher after Wall's Supermax -wont be able to trade Porter for someone like Big Cuz if it came up
So do they match? Do they believe Oubre can be as good as Porter for a lot less money? Do they engage BK on a S&T

I think its a huge PR blunder to not match. Fans wont let you live it down unless Porter starts to suck in BK or Oubre really balls.

The problem were seeing is its a huge handicap. Portland and Miami have both been rumored to now want to trade Crabbe and Johnson.
Crabbe probably performed at expectations and I'd say Tyler performed slightly above. They werent completely bad, but for those teams with other big contracts...its tough. And with this Porter deal WAS woudnt even be able to engage in trade talks on Porter if they wnated to.
Porter would be BKs biggest contract and they have no other possible Maxes on the roster so they dont have the same handicap of overpaying to get what they want.

The Spurs desperately need another legit scoring threat. Unless LMA gets it together, he ain't going to be that guy. Assuming a full recovery, Gay should provide MUCH needed help on offense to lighten the burden on Kawhi.

in order for the Celts to sign IT to his impending max deal, correct? Hopefully Detroit is either on the come up or Bradley somehow lands on a better team because he's a pretty good young talent. Hopefully he doesn't squander for the remainder of his career.

crowder's contract is too valuable and the Cs have been talking about Jaylen Brown at the 2 for a while/positionless between the 2 and 4. they don't trust bradley as a primary ballhandler, so he was basically a wing in a PGs body in the celtics' scheme.

the weird thing to see will be the Cs basically playing "small ball" but with bigger bodies at every position except C.

are people still drinking the Kool aid of idiot savant Ainge?

Bradley was arguably the best player in the playoffs for them,, their best defensive guard, and best 3 point shooter. he's gotten better every year too. how do they give him up instead of smart or especially crowder, who's going to keep Brown and Tatum on the bench.

not a huge upgrade signing Hayward and Morris while losing Olynyk and Bradley. Knicks gon Knick but this is the real baby what is you doing offseason move if you ask me

still Cavs in 5

Midget hip injury plus new parts plus Gordon minus Avery probably equals 53-55 wins in the shitty east, but no more.

And, yeah, the gains you made by getting Hayward are pretty significantly mitigated by the losses from losing Bradley. I know Avery is about to expire, so I get the deal, but for next year alone, this really means they've just tread water

I don't get it. I mean, I **get it** in the white hope sense, but...

Boston celebrating like the won KD, Jazz fans throwing straight hissy fits...

Dude wasn't even the most valuable player on his team last season.

And old man Joe Johnson was their best player in the playoffs.

How you going to get past the Cavs, let alone challenge the Warriors, when Gordon Hayward is your 2nd best player?

I get it if this would have lead to other moves, but no team with Gordon Hawyard as their 2nd best player is winning sh!t.

If it wasn't for the conferences becoming even more out of wack this off-season, I'd predict that Boston AND Utah would hardly see a change in their records.

But Utah playing with the big boys and Boston in the minor league.

People are getting out of hand with this white-supremacist-haircut having dude.

and his .98ppp with the ball in his hands lat year is an elite number

but to your point, Horford is still the 2nd best player on that team. maybe THE best. but you have to watch him to see it.

"get the old band back together" thing? Boston's been searching for another white star for a while and now they finally have one. They had to move AB.

Marcus hit Cleveland for 18 a game 2 years ago in the playoffs on 48/39/87

Who guards him in a IT-Hayward-Crowder-Morris-Horford lineup?

Celtics + Marcus + Hayward - Bradley = overall improvement

boston improved dramatically in the short term. and still have 7 1sts in the next 3 drafts, including 2 likely top 5ers.

*and* bron might go west in a year.

they're set up beautifully. these dudes are bugging.

In response to Reply # 316

KO just got replaced by Marcus Morris, that's a wash pretty much.

Bradley was going to last for one year and the Cs think Jaylen Brown is a 2/their 2s and 3s are largely positionless. They also think Jaylen's a better potential matchup for Lebron.

IT's hip injury is reported to be fine by the start of the season (knock on wood) and if it isn't, Hayward's a better fit for replacing what IT brings while he's still recovering than Bradley.

The team needed a guy who can create his own offense more than a good shooter.

everyone thought Crowder was the one who'd leave, but by moving Bradley, Crowder continues to get 30 minutes. I bet the starting lineup has Hayward at the 2, so it's:

IT/Hayward/Crowder/Morris/Horford
with Smart and Rozier backing up IT/Hayward, Brown behind Hayward/Crowder and Tatum behind Crowder/Morris and Yabusele behind Morris as well with Zizic as Horford's backup.

rebounding will still suck (though Zizic >>>>> any of the prior year's backup Cs for that already), but seems like that's what the Cs will punt (fwiw, the Dubs were even worse at defending theboards). so be it.
