It's about Karl going from a fact--at the very least, we can all acknowledge melo isn't all defense--to a sweeping, completely racist dismissal of an entire class of human, with zero regard for the hurt he casually used to sell books.
Like, I bet is was probably pretty hard to not have a dad around. I'm not sure, because my dad often times made me wish I had melo's problems instead of mine. And in my 20s, I was at least as much as an asshole as JR smith. I got arrested some, I took my career far less seriously than he did, and no one could tell me shit. If they had, I'd have far fewer regrets, but you couldn't tell me NUTTIN. And it caused problems that I had to deal with, although I'm certain I had to deal with far fewer problems than JR did, even though I'm sure I did worse shit than he did.
You know what though? No one ever said "Shelly is failing out of graduate school because white fathers hit their kids." If they did, I'd be pretty fucking pissed off, because that statement simply doesn't apply to me and in no way explains my problematic behavior. Moreover, if my dissertation advisor said that shit to me, I'd have wanted to fight him, because it was obvious that the advisor was not seeing me, coaching me as an individual, but as some stereotype in his mind. If I were someone like Kenyon Martin, who sounds like he is working his hardest to give his kids the type of father he didn't have, I'd be triply mad, because I know that no matter what good I do, people like George Karl are always going to see me as a deadbeat dad and all sorts of other things. ---- bshelly
