"CFB Saturday 10.29"

10.27
(25) Virginia Tech vs. Pitt

USC vs. Cal
Cal hasn't beaten USC in 12 years. they haven't beaten them in the Coliseum in 15 years. this year is as good a chance as any.

10.28
(22) Navy @ South Florida
possibly the AAC conference championship preview. both leading their divisions, but a Bulls loss would drop them to third place. Houston is fourth place in the AAC...South division.

10.29
(2) Michigan @ Michigan State
Wolverines favored by 24 points. Harbaugh will be trying his damnedest to cover.

(3) Clemson @ (12) FSU

(4) Washington @ (17) Utah
Utes are 7-1 but just barely. five of their wins have come by an average of 3.4 points, and they have an ugly loss to Cal.

(7) Nebraska @ (11) Wisconsin
(8) Baylor @ Texas
(10) WVU @ Oklahoma State
(14) Florida vs. Georgia

(15) Auburn @ Ole Miss
Tigers have benefited from playing six of their first seven games at home. this could be a big letdown after demolishing Arkansas, although Ole Miss is not playing too well.

(18) Tennessee @ South Carolina

Notre Dame vs. Miami-FL
looked good on paper two months ago.

last year at this time there were 12 undefeated teams, and nobody in the top 14 had more than one loss. this year...

#12 Florida State: gave up the most points in school history (63) to Louisville, lost again to UNC at home, and their best victory is over 3-4 Ole Miss. they've lost *twice* before Halloween and are still in the top 12!

#14 Florida: how the fuck did the Gators sneak back into the top 15? their best win is Kentucky!

no wonder Ohio State only fell four spots. should be interesting when the playoff committee starts releasing their version.

In response to Reply # 2

the only starters on offense or defense that were not drafted were OG Sherko Haji-Rasouli, C Brett Romberg and OLB Chris Campbell.

- Haji-Rasouli was All-Big East.
- Romberg won the Rimington Award (best college center), was first-team All-American and started 18 NFL games.
- Campbell died in a car accident a month after the 2001 title game.

- their fourth-string tight end was a third rounder (Kevin Everett, although his playing career ended abruptly after being nearly paralyzed on a kickoff return for the Bills).

- their second-string fullback ran for 1,018 yards as a senior and was an Orange Bowl MVP (Jarrett Payton).

- they sent 9(!) defensive backs to the NFL.

- speculation, but I'd guess in 10 years they will have three NFL Hall of Famers: Reed (undoubtedly), Wilfork (should be) and Gore (likely). Gore is currently 9th all-time in rushing and will pass Tony Dorsett by the end of this season if he stays healthy. if he plays another season he will pass Eric Dickerson and move to 7th, behind Jerome Bettis.

Todd Sievers was a Lou Groza finalist, All-American, and twice All-Big East. he was clutch in their only two close wins of the season, going 8-for-9 against Boston College (18-7) and Virginia Tech (26-24).

guy who could run with anybody. Rumph the bigger (6-2, 205) boundary-style corner who was perfect at bump-and-release in their cover two. I loved Fitzgerald too, he was one of those unsung seniors who made opportune plays and was always in position at nickel.

Buchanon was also an All-American punt returner. some of their NFL careers (or lack thereof) have diminished their reputations, but all these guys were *elite* collegians. Maurice Sikes? yeah, he didn't make it to the league but he was a hitter in college and was All-Big East. and that was their fourth-best safety!

I can't imagine what quarterbacks thought when they had to face these guys. you drop back to pass on third and eight:

- Wilfork is coming up the middle like a man possessed, because he only has to play 30-40 snaps with their 10-man rotation
- Rumph gets a jam on your #1 receiver, Buchanon is all over your second option
- Vilma and Williams with their 4.4 speed were dropping underneath and would pick-six you if you try and fit in a crossing route or swing pass
- oh, and if there's a 10-yard opening downfield you had to throw a football past Ed Reed and Sean Taylor

might not see anything like that again, with the way modern offenses have trended

that Josh Heupel/Roy Williams Sooners team was damn good. but 2000 Miami was sick in their own right:

WR Santana Moss
WR Reggie Wayne
DT Damione Lewis
MLB Dan Morgan
CB Leonard Myers
S Al Blades

like you said though, I'm just glad I saw that run. I still remember how hilarious it was to see them punking Jerramy Stevens during the 65-7 revenge game against Washington in 2001.

and Ed Reed is going to be that player I go full "old man" about in the future. when someone tells me so-and-so is the greatest safety of all-time in 2035, I'll tell them "he's good, but he ain't no Ed Reed."

That Oklahoma team was stacked

And their passing spread shotgun was nasty enough to test even Miami's secondary. Fagan, Woolfolk, Norman, Smith, amd Griffin was a damn good group.

No slouches on D either.

by 80 regardless.

SC was always going to be a competitive team within the PAC.

against Cincinnati they were down 16-12 in the fourth quarter, but had consecutive pick-sixes to make it look like a blowout.

I saw almost all of Houston-SMU and the Mustangs (who are not good) just dominated the entire game. you know those upsets were the underdog just gets a lot of great bounces, even though you can tell they're being outplayed? nah, it wasn't that. SMU was running all over them and shutting down their offense.

can't say the weekly "Herman to Texas guaranteed" nonsense the fake Twitter reporters type up.

Bo actually started that at Miami OH in 1965. In 1968 Woody copied it, and in '69 Bo took it to UM.

So really, your violent psychotic "icon" stole it from Bo.

They do all the little things so well. They consistently execute in every phase man - guys don't give up on QB pursuits, wideouts don't quit on routes, kicker makes his kicks. And Watson is a stud (if Dak Prescott can win the NFC East then there's real upside for Watson)

I love this team and I loved them last year. I'm trying to figure what I want to see more - Saban vs Harbaugh or a Bama/Clemson rematch

-3 in turnover margin this season. Watson has had a pick in every FBS game except Boston College. his interceptions kept Louisville and NC State competitive in games that Clemson would've otherwise ran away with.

horrible loss for the Vols. coming off a bye against a Gamecocks team that's starting a 17-year-old at quarterback and has only beaten UMass, Vandy and ECU.

I wouldn't been upset if Florida had won out and took the SEC East due to playing the softer schedule, but this was a bad, bad way to lose the division. Jones will go on about injuries but nobody really cares about that in week nine; everybody has someone hurt.

Rick Trickett is known as one of the biggest SOB coaches in football. former Marine and Vietnam vet who has been coaching for 40 years. if Jimbo wants to fire him, he can fire him, but trying to chew him out ain't going to fix what Trickett already knows.

I feel bad for those linemen next Tuesday.

Check the 2013 game against MSU in the big 10 champ game.

At the end of the day this is Meyer's offense.

as far as Narduzzi/MSU...their talent level right now is just not what it was when Narduzzi had that defense running at its peak.

and you'll see many commonalities between that offense, last year's offense and the current offense.

1. over-reliance on the qb run in tight games
2. an ineffective passing scheme that opposing defenses do not have to respect
3. abandoning the usage of your best offensive player (Hyde) in lieu of the qb run

Point #3 was in full display last year when Zeke got carries in the 2nd half vs MSU as well as failing to get Braxton the ball for the entire season. And this year when they've refused to give Curtis Samuel the ball.

Again, this has always been Meyer's offense regardless of who has had the OC title.

MSU's D was outstanding in 2013 but it was a very winnable game for OSU despite their terrible defense.

like you said, you can cycle coordinators all you want but this is Meyer's offense.

Ohio State's receivers could be playing better, but even when Meyer had Percy Harvin, Aaron Hernandez, Louis Murphy, Riley Cooper and Deonte Thompson, Florida was 92nd in passing attempts. he'd rather have Tebow plow into the line 200 times; the quarterback zone read is Meyer's safe place.

Saban recently lamented that bama doesn't line up and run it down your throat like they used to, and haven't really done that in a few years now. but he acknowledged you have to see how the college game is changing, and adapt to it. not sure if Meyer is willing to do that.

>Ohio State's receivers could be playing better

I think they're taking undue blame at this point.

OSU landed two stud WR recruits last year who haven't yet seen the field in significant minutes. If the front line of WR's are so terrible then play the kids. But they don't probably because it won't matter.

Based on the incoming personnel Meyer is going to have to. His offseason moves will be interesting. OSU will have a very talented and deep group of quarterbacks...none of whom are built to carry the ball 20 times per game and none of them singed up with OSU to do that. The passing offense will have no choice but to evolve.

that could run the ball but not pass it with great effectiveness. MSU was very good running the ball as well but the difference was Connor Cook balled out. He was simply better than Braxton in the passing game. You ran for over 270 yards in that game but the fact of the matter is Braxton was 8-21 for 101 yards throwing the ball.

http://www.espn.com/college-football/boxscore?gameId=333410127

Now last year vs MSU & to be quite honest PLENTY of games where the OSU offense was unnecessarily sputtering I agree. Zeke wasn't getting the ball enough.

so you're agreeing with me. the passing offense stunk under herman and stinks currently as well. cool.

I dont recall how many carries hyde had in the 2nd half of that game but it wasnt nearly enough. and OSU driving late to win the game...3rd and short in MSU territory and hyde wasn't even on the field. braxton carried it on 4th and 1 and gets stopped. game over.

>At the end of the day this is Meyer's offense.

He was never a coordinator before becoming HC and he got the system from Rich Rod and Randy Walker. He's shown the ability to tweak it *somewhat* based on his personnel, but there have also been times that he didnt.

Ive said it before he even landed at OSU and I'll say it again, I honestly think the biggest part of him leaving UF was whiffing on QBs in the 07, 09, and 10 classes. Brantley was the natl poy and Meyer just had no idea what to do with him. Trey Burton was even worse, because he took a soph year commitment and then stopped recruiting QBs. Had Tebow's power running...and thats it. Anyone who watched his hs team play saw Dri Archer carry him.

Meyer aint a guru.

sfmatt used to always talk about how meyer stole everything from chip kelly. meanwhile meyer is 100x the coach that chip kelly is and dick rod is currently coaching a pac 10 cellar dweller (for how much longer?)...so really who cares?

meyer makes the decisions on offense at OSU. he'll take the applause when it goes well and the criticism when it goes poorly.

65. "What does that have to do with anything?"
In response to Reply # 61

Its only "his" offense in the sense that the team he coaches runs it, and that he has to answer for it as the HC. Its not his offense in the sense that he devised the concepts, or understands when to deploy them. He has never been the playcaller at OSU.

None of that makes him good at X's and O's and with the entirety of the past 10 years to look back on, he hasnt shown that he is.

...for this year.

as far as last year, we should have just gone with JT from the get go.

Urban should have encouraged Cardale to go pro, but whatever.

this year the Wrs just cant seem to get any separation. i dont understand it.

totally agree re: misuse of Braxton and Zeke and now Curtis Samuel. I wish I could explain it .

also, Vegas has Ohio State as 16 point favorites this Saturday over Nebraska? What the hell are they smoking?

At this point, we shouldnt be 16 pt favs over ANYBODY except Purdue.

I wouldnt be surprised if we go into The Game with two losses, as long as we dont lose that one, I'm happy with a 2 loss season considering the youth of this team.

next year though its championship or bust (if JT comes back)

>For the past 2 seasons the offense has look completely
>befuddled roughly 75% of the time.

and has been running for a few years now.

JT had several opportunities to take the starting job last year he just simply wasn't good. and has progressed minimally since 2014.

it doesn't mean that I'm not pleased to be 7-1 with this team but an objective look at the offensive game planning shows there are some huge holes.

2, maybe 3 walk ons will be starting on the OL

OL: lost 2 starters, 2 more are playing hurt

Cethan Carter, future NFL TE, will likely not play

Ability to bounce back from a game they could have/should have won in Madison?

interesting to watch WR play between the two teams with Zach Smith and Keith Williams twitter volleys back and forth

I'm sure Tim Beck has been pretty useful this week

maybe, since he didn't play in the second half, but I thought he made it official when they had a team meeting last night. from what I read a lot of teammates weren't surprised.

his uncle's statement was sort of all over the place. he said he's transferring because he wanted to play in an I-form offense...then said Hurd is going to switch positions anyway. so it's basically a split from the coaching staff.

No way I'd transfer and stay an extra year, then play, just to TRY to get drafted at TE. I'd of stayed a Vol.

The funny thing is that a lot of recruiting services had him as an ATH and thought his future was at TE or LB. He had no interest in going down that path and was stuck on playing RB.

Bama, Clemson, & Washington go undefeated along with Louisville... Would Ohio St deserve to jump Louisville?

i honestly think they would deserve that due to winning more impressive games, even tho the Louisville argument that they barely lost to the #2 team in the country is worthy. that would be interesting.
