The formula to beating the 80s Lakers was to slow down the pace & go at Kareem.

'81 Rockets: Moses
'83 Sixers: Moses
'86 Rockets: Akeem/Sampson

The Sixers also had Cheeks to hound Magic & Bobby Jones was also the perfect 4 to defend Worthy if they go up against the mid 80s Lakers.

all very close. then a sizable gap btwn them and '89 DET.

best '80s non-champs: '86 MIL, '81 PHI, '87 ATL, '89 PHX, '89 CLE.

I'm assuming you mean teams that didn't win their conferences when you say "non-champs", otherwise you can add all the Celtics/Lakers/Pistons teams that lost in the Finals to the list.

The '86 Rockets are the best non-Celtics/Lakers/Pistons squad that lost in the Finals.

That 89 Pistons team won 63 games and swept the Lakers in the finals. They also only lost two games the entire playoffs. They swept the Celtics and Bucks, and beat the Bulls 4-2. Plus that same Pistons team repeated the next year.

I'm not saying they were the best of the 80's, but they gotta be right there with that Sixers team and that Lakers team.

The '89 Pistons were on a mission like the 2014 Spurs.

If I had to look at the best single-season teams, I think the '83 Sixers would be No. 1 with the 86 Cs a very close second. That Sixers team was no joke, 65 regular season wins, swept the Finals (yes, the Lakers had injuries but even Kareem admitted they mattered not), etc.

'86 Celtics were extremely formidable, I could see an argument for them as well.

Over the span of the decade, obviously the Lakers were the best franchise with Boston and Detroit close behind. Philly didn't really register since everything after the title was pretty well bungled.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

folks agree is best? I assume 85 and 87, with Kareem being a tad bit younger, although Worthy's 88 dominance may balance that out.

Also reminds me that 1982 is the team I hear about the least...since 80 was the start, and Magic had that crazy series...85 we finally beat the Celtics...87 we got the Celtics again and had the dramatic hookshot....88, Isiah went nuts and still couldn't overcome the squad. I can't even say much about 82 off the top.

Isiah's ankle was swollen up by Gm 7 so that was all she wrote for the Pistons.
