Kell Brook vs Gennady Golovkin confirmed: Middleweight world title bout set for September 10

17:30, 8 JUL 2016 UPDATED 17:48, 8 JUL 2016
BY ALEX RICHARDS

Middleweight monster GGG has 35 wins in 35 fights and the God of War will now do battle with Special K, himself with 36 wins in 36 fights
Kell Brook will step up in weight to face middleweight king Gennady Golovkin, for the unified Middleweight Championship on September 10.

Brook's promoter, Eddie Hearn, has confirmed that Special K will face GGG - the WBC, WBA, IBF and IBO Middleweight champion - at London's O2 Arena, in a battle between two unbeaten fighters.

Brook, 36-0, the reigning IBF welterweight champion, will forego a unification bout with WBO welterweight champion Jessie Vargas to take on Kazakh star Golovkin, seen by many as boxing's pound-for-pound king following the retirement of Floyd Mayweather.

Golovkin, 34, will fight in Britain for the first time, putting his 35-0 (32 KO) record on the line.

“I’m very excited to be fighting in front of the great British boxing fans and promise another ‘Big Drama Show’ against Kell Brook,” said Golovkin.

Brook – who will retain his status as IBF Welterweight champion – has been hunting a major fight since landing the World title.

And he believes he is good enough to defeat Golovkin and become boxing's biggest star.

“This is the fight and the moment I have been waiting for for some time,” said Brook.

“We've tried and tried to lure the best to come and fight me and now we've got the best of the best – the number one pound for pound fighter in the world is coming to the UK.

“When this fight got offered to me I accepted within minutes and I can't wait. Everyone knows I'm a huge welterweight and I know I will carry my speed and accuracy and even more power through the weights.

"This is the ultimate fight, one of the biggest international fights the country has seen in many years - you have seen some huge names run from GGG but I'm running to him. I'm a Special fighter and I will show the World on September 10.”

Golovkin's camp are looking forward to fighting in the United Kingdom for the first time, although it won't be his first experience against a British fighter.

The God of War has already beaten both Matthew Macklin and Martin Murray - the latter in February last year - and his promoter, Tom Loffler, has taken a cheeky dig at fighters who the GGG camp believe have dodged their man - who has won all 16 of his title defences by knockout.

“We’re very excited to have Gennady fight for the first time in the UK,” declared Loffler.

“We have a great deal of respect for Kell Brook for stepping up and facing Gennady when so many have been reluctant to do so."

“I cannot tell you how excited I am for this mega fight,” said Eddie Hearn. “I've worked hard with Tom over the years to bring GGG to the UK and now we do it as the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

"Right here you have the number one Welterweight in the world against the number one Middleweight in the world – 36-0 vs. 35-0, two of the best on the planet, it's what big time boxing is all about.

“I couldn't be happier for Kell. We have pushed for that big name for a long time with many reluctant to step into the ring with him and now this is the ultimate challenge, the biggest fight of 2016."

but what about Kell Brook...

the WELTERWEIGHT....

what's he doing??

You and other Floyd apologists were on here talking about how GGG was a giant and Floyd would be crazy to fight that giant (same thing y'all said about him fighting Canelo, before the fight was signed)

now here's a current Welterweight champion who is gladly moving up to fight the pound for pound best fighter in the world...

speak on that.

I'm asking because out of the potential fights out there, this one is the most "intriguing" to me. I have no interest in seeing him sleep Eubank and slightly more than no interest in seeing him sleep Jacobs.

I never see GGG calling out bigger guys. Try to call out James DeGale - even Badou Jack. He's called out Mayweather and Cotto - but never mentioned Ward/Stevenson/Kovalev's name. If you're a P4P great - you need legacy fights, but I just see his camp being too content fighting smaller, lower-risk fighters. GGG is in his mid 30's already - and with no marquee fight on his dossier - he's running the risk of having spent his prime years without viable challenges to push him to the next stage.

but if that's your beef with GGG.... why do you not agree with those who make that same argument against Floyd. If not calling out or going after bigger guys is a mark against GGG...why isn't it a mark against Floyd?

Now I would also submit that GGG isn't necessarily calling out Ward or Kovalev because his got big money and challenging fights where he's at right now... Unfortunately for him there are the number of top fights at Middle right now as there is at Welter, outside of Canelo....but he's at least got to wait for Canelo at middle before he entertains moving up...and I'm sure he will.

I saw both of these guys fight at DC Armory back in April, and while it would be slightly intriguing to see since he'd be moving up, I think he walks through both of them relatively easily

He's called out Mayweather

Fair re: Mayweather. He called out Cotton for the same reason he called out Canelo: he's been wanting to unify the MW belts. I read somewhere that he and Kovalev are too close to ever fight one another.

All that said, I agree that, depending on how Ward/Kovalev plays out, he needs to go for the legacy fight and call out Ward.

you all really think GGG is going to move up in weight with his fight coming up against Alvarez? Golden Boy would probably use any loss as an excuse to cancel that gentleman's agreement for September 2017. fighting an undefeated champion, albeit from a lower weight class, is about as risky as i could expect from a fighter in his situation.

everyone assumed Brook's first big money fight was going to be with Keith Thurman... but fighting GGG doesn't end the possibility of that fight, and if Kell can pull the upset then he's in a more powerful position as the Middleweight champ than the Welterweight champ...

GGG gets a challenging opponent...a guy with a belt..fighting in Brook's backyard.... it's a big fight for GGG too..

I'm happy that Brook is getting a big fight. Disappointed that it is not against Thurman, Khan, or Garcia. The absence of of Floyd and Manny in the welterweight division has created so much parody and they still seem reluctant to fight each other. Thurman/Porter was the exception, not the rule.

Because there are no "superstars" all the guys at the top have something to lose. Thurman came real close to losing to Porter for a 1.4 million dollar purse. The possibilities are endless at 147/154. I guess the promoters have decided I'm not allowing my fighter to engage in a 50/50 fight for a limited purse. Guys are even giving up belts instead of fighting their mandatory opponents.

GGG is looking real comfortable at 160. The biggest fights for him are smaller guys. Ward or Kovalev don't have visibility in the sport to present an acceptable risk to him. As long as he continues to knock people out in spectacular fashion his stock will continue to rise. Meanwhile Andre Ward, who has accomplished more in the sport and has yet to lose a fight had to go to 174 in order to get a big fight.
