But they need to get rid of all frauds...Snitchiveli and Cop Face are not championship pieces. They just not. Trade them for picks. Trading Russell could lead to Fultz who is better than him. Trading Cop Face could lead to Rabb who is better than him.

But if those guys don't pop- especially randlle, trade value goes way down on the we'lol see approach. There's a thin line between exciting prospect possibility cause you're a high pick and Wesley Johnson

We all know how Wes panned out, but if you gave me raw #'s I'd take what Wes did as a 21 yr old over what crabbe did as a 24 yr old and Baze did as a 27 yr old.

I'm not sure what the expectation was but a legit double double in what was really his rookie season was certainly on the high end of what I hoped for personally.

I agree his trade value isn't super high but, like everyone else on this team, we don't really know what we have just yet.

At worst he'll be a cheap, cost controlled rebounding machine for two more years and that's not exactly the worst thing for us to have.

I'm betting on zero-one(with the one being parts of Kobe's last game) for at least a couple of these guys.

He's clearly got the potential to grow into a much better offensive player than he is at the moment, IMO.

At which point did the Knicks decide to completely rebuild via the draft and surround their younger players with veterans to help their development.

I would've preferred they get Whiteside to Mozgov, but by the time free agency is done, that Mozgov deal will look like a bargain.

Whiteside was the only guy among the bigger names any of us thought we had any decent shot at.

The only thing about the Mozgov deal is his recent injury and rehab situation. Otherwise it's fine and already looking like one of the savvier deals of the off-season. If healthy he's worth 64 to the Lakers far more than, say Evan Turner is to Portland for 75.

Deng is a fantastic pickup for us. My only misgiving is whether or not there's a team option for the 4th year because I preferred to see two year deals.... but it's still an otherwise solid pickup for us.

After KD there are no players that could transform us into a playoff contender over night.....but by all means please point out all the guys who are realistically attainable and worth the money this market commands.

You mean when we looked at our situation and saw *possibilities* that *could* work out and slowly built our *actual* and *realistic* expectations as time went by and the picture became clearer?

Yeah, obviously we weren't hoping for Mozgov and the retirement contract of Luol Deng initially.

I'm not too sure what your point is. It's not like we were absolutely certain of who would come and when and maintained 100% certainty until today.

I asked a question about ya'll free agent pursuits. Ya'll basically said what ya'll thought and said for most of the last 2 years you realized wasn't gonna happen and changed your expectations. So ya'll went from boogie and love and more recently barnes and Whiteside to luol and mozgov type dudes.

So what's the argument?

he will be active four years from now but not nearly worth the money, hell he is barely worth it right today. i do like him as a locker room guy though and he was likely the most talented player available to the lakers. still, i would be leery of long commitments, especially in their situation. you can always roll the space over into next year; with clarkson signed it's not like they have any big extensions to hand out next summer. be a bigger player in a market with fewer teams in it. i guess they dont feel that way.

We suck. We need to overpay to get players. It is what it is.

Hopefully - if all pans out - he becomes a mentor and a productive (if not overpaid) player heading into the 4th year. I'm ok with this knowing few in this offseason is taking much of a discount, let alone to come to the Lakers.

first, Horford is the first legit free agent to sign with the Cs since...ever?

second, the Cs can still sign another top FA this year or next without sacrificing anything of value. The Cs needed a big who could score, they got one. even without the durant theories (he supposedly really wants to play with Al), this makes the Cs into a squad that might not beat the cavs at full strength, but are a legit contender for the #2 and to make the east finals while still having future Nets picks and cap space. plus, he can shoot 3s now? sheeeeit.

Horford doesn't make them contenders, but it doesn't really hurt their cap space and makes them look far more legit than just scrappy young guys.

like i dont get why the lakers are spending the way they are. they just signed crawford, they dont have to extend all of their last three rookies for next year. why not hang onto the space and spend it in a less competitive market?

if you're a team that needs to hand out a max extension or something next year, OK, spend the money now and do you thing (bird years, luxury tax, etc) but not every team needs to spend to the cap hell as the sixers have proven you don't even really have to spend to the floor.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

'Cause all the other "back-up plans" have now signed elsewhere. Might as well as bring back memories the components that helped them get to the finals back to back, even if they shit the b d in the finals.

Shoot, tom my knowledge, none of the Dubs free agents have signed anywhere yet.

Pretty fair price for a decent 3rd guard, no idea who's playing 3 for the Clips next year though.

Melo has to thank Bron for getting him help by winning the title and forcing front offices around the league to get their guys help.

I can see KD going to Boston or LA. If he resigns with OKC then it has to be for a year so he can break the bank next offseason with a 251.7 mill deal over five years.

Aging perennial all-stars on max deals in Bron's age bracket that teams need to build around getting help around the league. GMs realized that stars will leave if they don't get help. These stars need to thank Bron for showing them the way. If they don't get help then chuck the deuce on their current organization when their contract is up and go manufacture some help by joining up with other superstars like Bron.

He played at Fresno State, improved every year and ended up being the best player on the team his senior year, went undrafted, kept working and improving and did well in d-league, made it to the Heat last year, played a handful of minutes a game, then ended up playing a lot more this season and spot-starting where needed. More athletic than he looks. And long.

... but this one genuinely baffles me. He doesn't fit what Hoiberg's been trying to build at all, imo.

Edit: I've seen a couple of people tweeting that this is a sneaky tank pick-up, like the Lakers signing Hibbert. But that gives the Bulls front office too much credit.

This is interesting i liked their offseason til this move. I like crabbe but now with lin, tj, and their old pieces excessive guys at 1/2/3 when their big depth is weak.

Thought they shoulda went after nicholson or myers Leonard tjones or DMO.

They may still be able to afford TJONES

kevin durant, right today, is the odds on favorite to win the 2017 mvp. he'll likely lead the league in scoring on a 65+ win team with possibly the best offense in league history.

and this whole SUPER TEAMS DON'T WORK! shit is a lie

houston was old as fuck, they still went to the WCF and game 7 thereof if i remember correctly.

the lakers got two old guys and one of them was injured. they were still odds-on title favorites all the way up through the finals, where admittedly they got sodomized by the pistons.

the celtics won a title and very nearly a second. they were from 25+ years of fuck nothing to greatness in less than a week.

the heat won with shaq and won twice with bron/bosh, plus two more finals trips (and an ECF with shaq).

i would say the super team has a pretty good record. the lakers getting wilt and the bucks getting oscar didn't hurt them either. both won titles with those guys, lakers were very close to two except wilt fucked up his knee.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Facts at hand:

The Warriors win 73 games.
The OKC Thunder were up 3-1 on the Warriors.
The lost the next three games to lose the series.
KD joins the Warriors in the offseason.

Name another NBA superstar in their prime that lost a series they were up 3-1 to the team with the most wins in a season and joined them months later.

This is far, far, worse than the decision but of course above-it-all NBA fan wonders where the negative responses come from.

Incredibly stupid.

He's a grown man in his prime who was in extremely high demand.

He had an opportunity to go to a better situation with stability on all fronts and took it.

There's nothing honorable or respectable about spending your best years falling short if there's an opportunity in front of you to get a strangle hold on your field. It's just plain fucking stupid.

Particularly in a field where everyone is so expendable. Team owners are allowed to cut bait on players to improve their teams, why the fuck can't a player cut bait on a team to improve their own situation?

lol

Yeah you remember this shit with your job prospects. If you ever have an opportunity to improve your career prospects, please be consistent and turn down that opportunity to improve your standing.

Your logic is flawed and my reaction is perfectly reasonable. KD is not expendable with his star status and was on a team with another superstar already. KD was a member of the championship contender up 3-1 in the conference finals. His team choked away a 3-1 lead and lost to the NBA record Golden State Warriors. He joins them months later in free agency. <--- All facts.

NO, IT IS NOT THE SAME THING. Everyone has my reaction to this. This is literally unprecedented in NBA history for KD's inability to beat this Warriors team. He couldn't beat the Warriors so he joined them.

This hurts KD's standing long-term as it looks like he copped out and joined the team that beat him on his home court. KD did not leave for more money he left to win a ring against the team that beat him so your example fails. Your career example fails completely as it does not take into account.

In response to Reply # 216

>Your logic is flawed and my reaction is perfectly reasonable.
KD is not expendable with his star status and was on a team
>with another superstar already.

Cool. He had an opportunity to go to an inarguably better situation.

PLEASE, show me "facts" to prove OKC is a better choice for anyone, let alone KD, than GS. Unless you're a backcourt starter there's no better situation for pretty much anyone than GS right now.

>KD was a member of the
>>championship contender up 3-1 in the conference finals. His
>team choked away a 3-1 lead and lost to the NBA record Golden
>State Warriors. He joins them months later in free agency.
><--- All facts.

LOL you keep saying "all facts" as though any of this is a point of contention.

>NO, IT IS NOT THE SAME THING.

uh.... what is not the same thing as what?

>Everyone has my reaction to
>this.

"everyone" can be wrong, and they often are. When a significant element of your defense relies on the old 'everyone else is doing it', that's a massive sign that your position is weak.

This is literally unprecedented in NBA history for KD's
>inability to beat this Warriors team. He couldn't beat the
>Warriors so he joined them.

So your argument is that he joined the team *because* he lost to them *one* time?

So, if he lost to this exact same Warriors team and there were better teams with greater stability and a better roster, he still would have gone to the Warriors solely because he couldn't beat them?

This is why your whole "anyone with a brain" comment is dumb as dish plates: you're not looking at the merits of the Warriors as a destination, only the fact that the Warriors beat him, which in and of itself should spell out why they're such an attractive destination to.... anyone with a brain.

>This hurts KD's standing long-term as it looks like he copped
>out and joined the team that beat him on his home court.

To the "dumb, simple, loud, and wrong as fuck" segment of sports fans and pundits, sure.

This shit was dumb when the Heatles formed up. The memes and whatnot were funny and all but the commentary against it was fucking stupid. The notion of faulting someone for improving their surroundings is about as dumb as anything I can think of. Just plain stupid, stupid, stupid. It's small minded, myopic, surface level, non-thinking thinking.

>did not leave for more money he left to win a ring against the
>team that beat him so your example fails. Your career example
>fails completely as it does not take into account.

lol I suppose if you reduce "career standing" to nothing but money. Most people with any sense at all would look at money but also things like culture, stability, management style, positioning for future success, the prospects for personal and organizational success, etc.

Then, people with sense would look at the new situation relative to the old situation.

You're looking at this from an extremely simplistic and emotional standpoint.

So what if a bunch of dumbass base level idiots are going to bitch and moan because he joined the team that beat him? Why the fuck should any man care what the lowest common denominator thinks of them, one way or the other?

There would be no bigger L than shining on a great opportunity because "what will all these other people think? what will the writers write and the posters post?"

Pressure will be on for Draymond and Durant to clean up the glass. Should be interesting to see how well those two do in terms of getting defensive rebounds in the half court is playoff scenarios.

Very interesting to see how that small ball investment will playoff defensively for Kerr and Co.

problem is not many teams are set up for that. the young/good centers and power forwards are on a lot of bad teams.

and 95% of the time speights or damian jones or whoever is gonna be on the court doing the dirty because any 3 of their top guards and forwards alone are going to be plenty to handle a lot of lineups.

of course, that was with Serge. The year KD's foot was fucked up, Russ damn near gunned us into the playoffs on his own...just missed by an Anthony Davis, double-clutch, half-court three pointer. The more I think, today, though, I'm starting to feel like (in the words of Craig Mack) he won't be around next year.

the competition for those non-homecourt spots is still pretty much the same talent level in the west.

but I'm more interested to see what he does after the season in 1) who he chooses and 2) if, assuming he chooses a possible contender, this is what gets him to be a little lit more the guy people claim he should be.

what this does do is totally blow up the second tier. i'm not about to wave the white flag on the spurs being there, but certainly things look bad for the clippers/toronto of the world and the moves by teams like the pacers and atlanta look silly right now.

cause if i'm a soon-to-be-fa i'm looking hard at teams with young controllable talent this season (minne, ad's health in n.o., maybe even lakers or philly) to see if they got it in them to be the next movement. westbrook might look extra hard at the lakers on that front.

If I'm getting the agenda and nickname correct, Brandon Jennings is reported to join the Knicks according to a tweet by Mark Stein.

I guess that means Langston Galloway is a goner. Too bad since I like the prospect of potentially developing young talent, but I guess Phil is going all chips in this off-season.

Does Scrubby Ass Gunner have any prior injury concerns I should be aware of?

Sounds like a pretty debilitating injury since I'm sure that heavily affected him in terms of running and jumping as well as he did pre-injury.

I was mainly asking to see if he had any knee problems that were re-occuring.

From being completely ignorant on this dude as a player and reading in between the lines with the OKP nickname and the low as fuck Knicks salary, seems as if he was a player that relied on quickness that was sapped by that Achilles tear and he didn't develop in other areas offensively. Small enough contact I suppose, but I hope the dude can do something in the half-court.

that was trotted out on the court last year. I'm just hoping for a 6-8 seed at this point given the multiple risks for injuries at this point.

I am curious what kind of bench the will get cobbled together since I imagine that'll be crucial with this line-up.

Not the rim protector bogut or ezeli is but at that price you don't get a more solid pro center who will battle with you.

Think he's one of the more overlooked players in the NBA. Great signing for the Dubs. Zaza giving away some coin for that ring. Will be interesting to see if any other vets get involved for the chase.

Maybe he doesn't get to choose if he doesn't sign an extension with the quickness.

I have to guess that Psycho Crusher's situation played into KD's decision. I know that helps to ruin 'KD is a ho' moratoriums but it had to matter along with the IBlocka move. Going down with the ship is an overrated thing to love about sports cats. False nobility ain't where it's at.

I wonder how KG would've been viewed if he would've continued to be a tree falling in the woods in Minny and retired sans title. No I don't...it would've been horrible. KG won out on that easily even with how much he fell off afterwards.

...$11 million on the last year of his deal. Especially considering there is a decent chance that Barnes isn't going to be playing like a max player. If the Dubs had resigned him for the max and he'd underperformed, he'd be damn near impossible to move.

http://www.spotrac.com/nba/free-agents/2017/small-forward/

33 year old Iggy is the best available unrestricted SF followed by Jeff Green, LoL! (Giannis is the best overall but he's going to sign an extension)

Barnes would get snapped up real quick especially considering the max is going to rise next year so his max wouldn't be a MAX in 2017. Parson/Deng got paid even when the FA market wasn't dry.

The days of unmovable contracts are over b/c of the cap spike: Mozgov/Noah had a shitty seasons but they didn't have trouble securing long term contracts.

take a paycut so they'd get paid roughly the same amount; similiar to when LeBron and Wade formed that NWO signing with Bosh years ago. The mad making of that move would be tremendous so on many levels.

So sayonara to either JR Smith or Bad Perm Shumpert, right? I believe I heard JR Smith has LeBron's agent.

They're well over the cap. They can re-sign Bron to whatever, but they can't sign DWade even if Lebron takes a paycut - at least not at the money Wade's looking for. If he DOES go there, and it's a big if, it's just as a "fuck you" to Riley.

or they are in full "fuck the Warriors, lets make sure anybody but them wins" mode

lets be honest, Wade doesn't make either of those teams contenders. so what's the point of signing him? at least now if they sign him they can get something out of Cleveland for him that can be used to build for the future.

...do it?

The last lockout was pretty much for the express purpose of "No more super-teams." Most of the rules instituted were made to make it easier for teams to keep the players that they drafted. But if the superstars are willing to leave that money on the table in the short term, only to make it back later, what are they going to do? Get rid of contracts with player options? Severely limit the max that players can sign for if they leave the team that drafted them? Eliminate unrestricted free agency? Those all seem like negotiation non-starters.

I can't imagine that they can justify eliminating the salary floor or get the players to give up more profit percentage points. Everyone knows the size of the league's TV deal. Any attempts at crying poor now are laughable.

So what is it that league can really propose that will change anything? If they do come up with something, exactly how long will it take the teams to find way to work around them?

I think you'd see fewer of them teaming up under those circumstances because the money they'd have to sacrifice would be so great. And I say this as someone who has no problem with the player made superteams of today as opposed to the owner made superteams of my youth.

Because teams that perennially suck will need to either draft stars or develop stars in the future. There's no stopping this movement.

So maybe the league can invest more money in something that could actually elevate the quality of young players' games. Because if they try to restrict the movements of players willing to sacrifice money for rings... "Good luck" (c) Taken

i think the olympics, and the perfect storm of Coach K's umbrella/the banana boat/90's dream team kids/larry brown aftertaste/dream team redemption, has had a big effect on these team-ups.

we see that enthusiasm waning, and not just because of rio's issues. and even with all the opt-outs, everyone going is already on some form of a max contract.

it's a long time til 2019. the next crop of guys isn't going to have that crucible of the bronze/beijing/turkey giving them those experiences on the court together.

this is a market adjustment right? the cap is going to keep going up, but this ballooning is going to level off because it was suppressed so long and sports tv deals aren't a bottomless well. (is this still accurate? https://twitter.com/DraftExpress/status/589170649727422464)

AND we all know g.s. is only in this situation because the team is getting paid off old cap numbers and not new ones, and quite a few of them were for various reasons below market even off that old cap. it's a fluke.

we've had on and off superfriends teams for years now, and there have still been plenty of other ways to construct winners. it's been a good era for small markets too.

still, there are going to be a lot of sour grapes. especially when these owners living vicariously (looking at you cuban and ranadive) get into the season and have concrete evidence of how they've facilitated this super team and fucked themselves.

we're lucky gilbert got a ring, cause can you fucking imagine?

i definitely don't put a major hissy fit past them....but i don't think anyone's going to fuck up their money.

In response to Reply # 289

I know it won't happen and even if they try the players' reps will fight them tooth and nail. But it would be sweet. In an ideal world, the percentage of revenue to the players would increase slightly and a hard cap would be instituted. They could also raise the max salary for an individual player a bit more, because WAY fewer players would get the max. IMO seeing the top guys capped at less than they are worth and seeing replaceable guys getting eight-figure salaries is no sort of meritocracy. The current system encourages and stops barely shy if it all of forcing teams to make bad decisions. You also can't make a push. It takes five years to try and get good, five years to undo your mistakes and five years to start over. Sometimes those phases take even longer. I am all for the players earning their keep but the stars make the league, let them get more and the majority get a little less but also get more flexibility. Teams also should get a lot more options and more basketball trades (instead of contract shuffling) would result, too.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

I kind of love that roster. I mean, I love that I don't have to root for them but it's going to be fun to watch, good or bad.

I kind of feel like Morey's gone off the deep end. Can't imagine he'll be the GM after this season.
