The last two seasons were marred by injuries (quadriceps tear last season really took his base away from him and then combined with the plantar fascia tear this season, he obviously didn't have any drive on his throws) but he was always must watch for me....a master-class in preparation and on field adjustment

Glad he's going out on top.

that I'm curious how many teams chucked the deuces to him in terms of potentially starting next year?

At least he was able to go out while getting a ring.

We just spent almost 20 years hearing about how cerebral and near genius he was and then now suddenly he's a folksy keeper of order?
I'll always remember him as a great in season qb, that on the biggest stages was the biggest story, but not the biggest star.
There's a word for that, hype.

From as self congratulating as the media surrounding him has been for the number of years, to the numerous stories they've done on him and his family, to the endless barrage of marketing we've endured with him, to this own public persona that he's driven ... to in the last few months of his long career, I'm to believe that a well known marketable nickname was known to hundreds of current players, thousands over the years, tons of media latcher ons and coverers ... that it never slipped once until Cam Newton stars talking at the end of this season?

That defies all rationality.

Edit: And here it is, in 2009 Gruden used it in a game he was covering

http://www.sbnation.com/lookit/2016/1/25/10826002/peyton-manning-broncos-nickname-the-sheriff-cam-newton-panthers-super-bowl

Then in 2011 while talking to Cam on one of those game review tapes he used it again.

And now in 2016 we're to run with it.

I'm irrationally frustrated with these manufactured send offs and myth making.

it's just a goofy nickname. I heard it said years ago and I'm no NFL insider. I thought it was a known thing. Either way, you really seem upset about it.

Like Favre he caught a ton of backlash late in his career and like Favre it don't mean shit because they are two of the best ever. I didn't always enjoy watching Manning (a few perplexing choke jobs, his constant bending of the play clock, etc) but I always appreciated him.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.
