>dudes are out here gettin crossed up this frequently in >pickup? I've always been a really good defender. Long arms, >decent lateral movement...and I've never personally been >crossed up. I have been dunked on a couple times, >cuz I used to be an over-aggressive shot blocker, though...but >that's for another time. But anybody can get got. I've never been dunked on, but got crossed twice. One time I knew dude couldn't shoot and he hit a couple, so I played him a little tighter. He hit me with a left/right and I looked at the ball and he was gone.
Second time I got crossed I nearly fell. He did an AI type cross and I reached (I know, against the rules). The ball looked so stealable that I couldn't resist. The only saving grace was dude blew the layup.
I've crossed a couple of guys and my handle is nowhere near that great. I'm nice with the ball fake/head fake so that can get people off balance. You can look at the waist all you want, but if you look at someone with a quick release, he'll rain on you (which is what I do, plus I'm a lefty). There's a lot of cats who play D like that, but it's hard to stick to those principles against a post player that can handle the ball and hit a mid-range shot. You keep looking at his waist, and he'll hit you with spin moves and fade aways all night. Then you change the d to guard against that and you get hit with an embarrassing fake.
What gets cats the most isn't necessarily a crossover, but more of a hesitation in their dribble or release. The hesitation can really get someone GOT.
It happens. It's not like an AND1 mixtape, and it doesn't happen often, but I've seen cats get GOT before, and I've gotten a couple cats (thank goodness I hit the shot after the cross).
I hear what you saying though. But sometimes, the player and the way the game plays out have you changing your defensive principles.
