"Poll question: Would you rather get crossed up or dunked on?"

Saw this question on twitter and thought the replies were interesting. I play primarily in the backcourt, so I'm biased against getting crossed. What say you?

it doesn't hurt my pride.

getting dunked on does. fuck that, i'ma foul your ass if you try it!

i remember one year we played casey jacobsen's glendora team. he yammed one one of our forwards and when he came to the bench another kid blurted out "so were his nuts actually IN your mouth or just close by?"

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

If a guy gets a step on you and/or has the footspeed, fine, but how do you lose him dribbling a lot? I am slow, no two ways about it, but I never get crossed up on a high switch. As long as his watch his waist, you know where he is and where he is going. I guess guys get caught looking to try to make an ill-timed play on the ball. Most of the time when you see someone really get shook/embarrassed, it's because at some point they leaned in, ruining their balance and vision.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

You're way more likely to get crossed up in your local average pickup game than dunked on

Like, I've played with and against enough guys who dunk easily in warmups to know that it's actually pretty hard to do in game. Especially against real defense not a breakaway and once cats stop playing organized ball. I can clearly remember one rec league I played in where I walked in the gym before my game and a guy was on a fast break and straight got facialized and I thought "Welp, probably not driving to the hole much in this league". But I didn't even feel bad for the guy who got dunked on, like at this point what can you do?

So I'd still rather get crossed up than dunked on, cause I mean getting crossed up just happens, but the fact that there's about a 1000% more chance of getting crossed up in a random game than getting dunked on makes me worry about it more. And if there are cats playing who can throw it down with ease you're pretty damn aware of it before and can sort of avoid it (I'm sub 6 feet I'm not blocking them).

I'm short, 5-8 but a decent shotblocker (long arms). I have been dunked on before and it's generally whatever, because I shrug it off as "he's 6-2 so whatever" whereas when I block a shot then it's like Nate Robinson threw your shit.

Getting crossed up though is not only embarassing, but now at my advanced age makes me scared I'm gonna tear something and that I shouldn't be out there anyway.

dudes are out here gettin crossed up this frequently in pickup? I've always been a really good defender. Long arms, decent lateral movement...and I've never personally been crossed up. How does it happen when you see it? Reaching? Watching the ball? I was always taught "your man can't go anywhere without his waist". That's why I never got got by head and ball fakes. I have been dunked on a couple times, cuz I used to be an over-aggressive shot blocker, though...but that's for another time.

But about a year or two ago, I was guarding a younger kid who was about 19-20. Solid player, but nothing special.

He crossed me up and went right by me TWICE. And I knew it was coming both times, but especially the 2nd. And it still happened. I knew what to do, I just couldn't move my feet fast enough to get there.

Shit was humbling.

Testing my vertical out a couple days ago was even more humbling.

I am slow, I can't jump, basically I'm like a foot shorter Arvydas Sabonis. All I can contribute is physical defense, shooting and passing, I am not even a good rebounder really. I am the last person to be bragging about my basketball game, fuck in my mid 30s I am just happy I can still play without any pain or injuries.

Your shit is Jordan got crossed up? But one of the best ball-handlers EVER, and that MF'er still got a hand on the ball when AI shot it lol. No, you should not be getting crossed up and no you do not need to "sag off" in order to avoid it. I used to coach basketball, too, if someone puts you on skates, that's some shameful shit.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

The more you dribble, the less chance you have of getting by me. If I can square up, you're not getting by. You will have to step back and shoot or give up the ball. It's about position and patience, not being athletic.

i'll give them an OK look at a stepback in certain situations but i think we can all agree that most of the time when you get beat on a crossover, you took a bad risk or got caught looking in the wrong place (watching the ball, biting on a head fake, etc).

i started playing in a league once a week and there are good players. you have to be on your toes there and it's pretty organized. otherwise i just play pickup. occasionally there are lower-level university players, occasionally there are kids who break dudes' noses with their bricks.

Each of them came from following his waist, but not being quick enough to react. Some dudes are just REAL quick w/ the handle.

That said, these days I'm not comfortable enough (read: far enough removed from surgery) to play tight D, so I'm much more likely to get blown by.

>dudes are out here gettin crossed up this frequently in
>pickup? I've always been a really good defender. Long arms,
>decent lateral movement...and I've never personally been
>crossed up. How does it happen when you see it? Reaching?
>Watching the ball? I was always taught "your man can't go
>anywhere without his waist". That's why I never got got by
>head and ball fakes. I have been dunked on a couple times,
>cuz I used to be an over-aggressive shot blocker, though...but
>that's for another time.
But anybody can get got.
I've never been dunked on, but got crossed twice. One time I knew dude couldn't shoot and he hit a couple, so I played him a little tighter. He hit me with a left/right and I looked at the ball and he was gone.

Second time I got crossed I nearly fell. He did an AI type cross and I reached (I know, against the rules). The ball looked so stealable that I couldn't resist. The only saving grace was dude blew the layup.

I've crossed a couple of guys and my handle is nowhere near that great. I'm nice with the ball fake/head fake so that can get people off balance. You can look at the waist all you want, but if you look at someone with a quick release, he'll rain on you (which is what I do, plus I'm a lefty). There's a lot of cats who play D like that, but it's hard to stick to those principles against a post player that can handle the ball and hit a mid-range shot. You keep looking at his waist, and he'll hit you with spin moves and fade aways all night. Then you change the d to guard against that and you get hit with an embarrassing fake.

What gets cats the most isn't necessarily a crossover, but more of a hesitation in their dribble or release. The hesitation can really get someone GOT.

It happens. It's not like an AND1 mixtape, and it doesn't happen often, but I've seen cats get GOT before, and I've gotten a couple cats (thank goodness I hit the shot after the cross).

I hear what you saying though. But sometimes, the player and the way the game plays out have you changing your defensive principles.

A guy got by out guard and I stepped up on him just below the foul line. He hesitated and tried to cross, and then again. I stayed with him the whole way and I thought for sure he was going to toss up like a 10-foot floater. I cheated ever so slightly to contest the shot, he lurched forward with one bounce, bang, layup. I just looked at him like ahhhhh, this muthafucka! It was a nice move, he was one of those springy little shits who is good at changing speeds

false.

Charges are all about being in good/legal guarding position. If you aren't in good defensive position, well you ain't playin good defense anyway lol.

If you woulda said flopping, then there would be a point. Or maybe a big man focusing on charges as opposed to defending the rim.

That mess happens all the time, especially when helping on the weak side or on a break. You just take the ball out, inbound it and keep moving. BUT Getting Crossed Over is a major fade because you're out there falling down and then you have to get up looking like a clown!

But dude was a foot taller, It was basically D'andre on Brandon Knight, but to me it ain't mean shit because I couldn't even touch net...he's supposed to dunk on me.

I'm small as shit, so I'm supposed to be quick and low...therefore, getting crossed would be worse to me.
