"Nyquil getting drowsy and Pacers playing lousy (swipe)"

The Nighttime, Sniffling, Sneezing, Coughing, Aching, Stuffy-head, Fever, So-You-Can-Rest wingman is in the midst of his annual midseason swoon. Will he put down the Nyquil bottle and pick up the espresso in time to save Indy's season?

Can a Struggling Paul George Turn Around His Season?

by Jared Wade 1d ago

Paul George has shot 37.7% in his last 25 games, including 32.6% from 3-point range. Can he fix himself?

Paul George was arguably the second best basketball player on the planet in November.

He won the Eastern Conference player of the Month award as the Indiana Pacers went 9-2 over 30 days. On the day he received the honor, he was posting per-game averages of 27.1 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 4.4 assists for the year. He was shooting 45.3%, including a remarkable 45.9% from behind the arc while hitting 3.3 triples each night, and getting to the line 7.6 times per game.

Other than known-alien Steph Curry, nobody else was balling out like this. Paul George was shooting like Dirk in the midrange and Kyle Korver from deep — and doing so while playing defense like Kawhi.

It didn’t last though.

Not long after, Paul George fell off. From December 12 to today, PG-13’s output has been more like Friday the 13th: horror show.

He has shot an embarrassing 37.7% in his last 25 games, including a dreadful 32.6% from 3-point range. Despite this, he has still been hoisting 7.1 triples per game over this stretch and only getting to the line 6.2 times per game. He has been driving less and taking a larger percentage of his shots from long range even while shooting poorly.

His per-game averages are way down across the board — just 20.1 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 3.4 assists each night — and even his defense has slipped some. To be sure, this means he is more like a third-team All-Defense caliber wing as opposed to first team, but offensive struggles began miring his whole on-court presence and leading to more possessions spent arguing with the refs than doing the hard work to get good shots. He started settling for inefficient looks more, and as his make rate on tough jumpers inevitably tailed off he was unable to adjust. He just kept pulling up expecting off balance and contested shots to go in like they had been in November. They haven’t and he hasn’t adjusted.

It hasn’t been enjoyable to watch, and while the six-week statistical output of Paul George isn’t in and of itself world-changing, his team has been struggling badly as well.

The Indiana Pacers are 11-14 over their past 25 games and have fallen to eighth place in the Eastern Conference. At first, the struggle seemed explainable. There were a few crunch-time calls that the league later admitted went against the Pacers. Then there were a few late-game collapses. They also played the Warriors twice — and nobody is going to beat Golden State.

Eventually, the blown leads seemed to take their toll on the squad psychologically, however, and now it’s as if the team freezes up in second halves, routinely going scoreless for comically long stretches.

There is no other way to see it: The Indiana Pacers are not a good team anymore.

The evidence for them being good is that they have built so many large leads during games, but what good is going on big runs if you can’t sustain high-level play for 48 minutes?

The Pacers of November, led by the Hall of Fame-level performance of Paul George, played like one of the five or six best teams in the NBA. The Pacers since December 12 have been mediocre at best and often outright bad. Before a win against the Hawks on Thursday, they were 1-6 in their prior seven games, collapsing against a team like the Nuggets and getting steamrolled by the likes of the Kings and Wizards.

For Paul George, however, there have been signs of improvement.

He admitted that his legs have been tired of late, and this is understandable for a player who missed basically a whole year and is trying to readjust to the rigors of an 82-game season. His coach Frank Vogel said he believes fatigue has ben a factor in his star’s tailspin and noted that the coaching staff needed to “keep an eye” on PG’s minutes.

Whether he is finding a way to maintain his energy better or this is just a coincidence is hard to say. But for six quarters, starting after half time against the Kings and lasting throughout the next game back home against the Clippers, George looked great.

He scored 24 in the second half against the Kings while getting to the line a dozen times. He followed that up with a 31-point night vs. Los Angeles, on 12-of-23 shooting, to go along with 11 boards.

Unfortunately, he was back to his old tricks the next game, missing 9 of 11 shots against the Hawks, but he was thrown off his game by early foul trouble and at least this game ended in a win.

Were those six All-NBA quarters just what can happen sometimes when a player as talented as Paul George takes the court enough times in a row? Or is he starting to turn it back around?

Frank Vogel did limit his minutes in the first quarters of the last two games. As opposed to his normal rotation of playing the entire first, PG played just 10 minutes vs. the Clippers and 8 vs. the Hawks. The early exit against Atlanta was due to early foul trouble more than solely a concern about fatigue, but if this continues it will be interesting to see if Paul George can play better in fewer minutes.

Even if not, limiting his minutes is worth a shot.

Something has to change with Paul George or this Pacers team isn’t going anywhere this season.

he has a hot november early december gets some mvp chatter, then plays pretty crappy for the rest of his year.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

his big ass goofy rook can't hit 45%, so FG% became trash...now it's the gold standard to poo poo PG, like PG ain't at near 90 in FT and 40 on threes.

and unfortunately, you just don't seem to be getting it. you came flying in trying to hand out agenda L's when you don't even know which agenda is which here. if you're that intent on interjecting yourself into this agenda then you'll have to go back and read that other post to understand the context of the debate. either that, or you need to go find another post to jump into on behalf of your new board buddy basa.

pick your poison. either way, it's bad for your agendas. so the question is, sacrifice TS% and stick to FG% to protect your anti-PG stance but kill your Zingis argument OR, stick to TS% and Zingis and Jah are roughly equal but the anti-PG stuff disappears.

your choice. or try to have it both ways, but i don't think that'd work well.

i look at PG FG% and go: yeah, that's bad...oh well.

you look at goof troops and go: but that TS% tho.

TS% is either better than FG% to you or it isn't.

yeah, i missed the joke, but i like consistency in what numbers people use to rate a player's shooting. and you've been all over me about consistency across posts, i saw you be inconsistent and jumped on it.

so yeah, you had a clever line after using Fg% to compare two players a month after saying TS% >>>>> FG%--a post I skipped because I don't follow you or basa around. but for the sake of your actual agendas, the logic backfires on you.

*shrug*

no, i was on you about lying across posts. in this case you missed the context across posts and flew in here blindy trying to hand out L's without knowing what was going on.

>so yeah, you had a clever line after using Fg% to compare two
>players a month after saying TS% >>>>> FG%--a post I skipped

so you get that the line was clever, but still don't understand what was clever about it? somehow you're still not getting it. maybe you should go back and figure out what's what here before you start commenting on it.

and if you skipped that post and don't follow me or basa around... then how did you know what I said in it last month to basa about TS% vs FG%?

hmmmm.....

you won't believe me, but i went and did a google search for "40thstreetblack okaysports ts%" and that popped up. the ones from years earlier that actually triggered my search (I thought it was you in the first pg/melo post, but it was DJR defending Waiters) either were gone or only available in printer friendly format. I know you know why ts% is better for gauging an offensive player, and i didn't bother reading the whole post. i should have. then you'd just be a flip flopper and not an annoying one.

zingis or melo. pick your agenda, pick FG vs. TS. or just have a clever line because you flip flopped which metric you use. i don't care.

oh no, I *completely* believe that you were pressed enough to do a google search on me trying to dig up something to use as agenda fodder against me. unfortunately, you failed to do your due diligence on it and it backfired on you. that's a shame.

yeah, that must be it. if only PG's shooting% could achieve such lofty heights.

true, he only chokes at the free throw line and when opponents challenge him to shoot from outside.

on Vogel. This is your franchise player, as coach you have to figure out how to get him going and just not let him flounder. Draw up some plays and sets to help him get easy baskets to get his confidence up.

KD or a Carmelo, PG is a good scorer but what makes him a "great" player is his all-around game and ability as a 2-way player. There are a lot of guys who are great players but you're rarely going to see them just take over a game offensively. PG is one of those guys. He needs somebody whether its a coach or a smart playmaking point guard to help get him going and it looks like he doesn't have either in Indy.

You blaming the pg and the coach, but according to what you posted, he shouldn't be the 1st option on a squad. That goes contrary to what alot of folks have said over the last few years or every November.

is a great player who is not a great scorer. He's a very good scorer but even in his prime he wasn't a guy that would regularly drop 40 on you at the drop of a hat. KG. Magic Johnson. Scottie Pippen. Bill Russell. Kawhi Leonard. Dwight Howard. Jason Kidd.

All great players that aren't or weren't great scorers.

This was touched on the Dirk vs. KG post, there are other areas of the game that are just as important as if not more so than scoring.

As far as PG being a "number 1 guy" a lot of that is agenda speak. Most good teams have multiple threats and aren't overly reliant on 1 guy to get them baskets.

In response to Reply # 48

During Tim's back-to-back MVP seasons, the offense was basically throw the ball to him every time down the floor then wait for him to get doubled & pray the spot-up shooters make their 3s. Thus, the offense wasn't predicated on him scoring but rather creating shots for the spotup shooters.

Hakeem is the only guy that played in a similar system & won a chip ('94) in the past 25 years. Hakeem's per 100 possession career average is 30.3 on 23.6 shots while Tim's is 29.8 on 22.8 shots, so basically Tim was as good a scorer as Hakeem.

He will never be that smooth on offense. Needs to tighten up his ball security a little, yes. Scoring is not the only thing that makes him valuable though, he is one of the better-rounded guys in the NBA and yes potentially he can pour in buckets on any given night.

In reference to that pacer squad, they were a top defensive team and he had a lot of help. But if you took one of those dudes out of their starting 5 (except maybe Hill) they are a much worse team. PG doesn't lead that team to 50 wins or the ECF without Hibbs, West and Lance.

take good players off a team and the team does worse. that's just generally true (the ewing theory/braess's paradox is a complication not worth getting into here).

define a #1 guy, then list them, then convince me PG wasn't that in 2013 and/or has no chance of being that ever.

I was just talking about right now. Right now, he sure ain't playing like one. Even that 2013 sucked down the stretch...i guess that coincided with PGs annual new year swoon.

A #1 guy is a guy you can build a team around and count on that guy to be your main gun on offense every night. Its much easier to build a team around that guy then a guy like PG who does a little bit of everything. PG is more of a #2. If you gonna have a team with PG as your #1 you gonna need above average players at just about every other position kinda like the Billups led Pistons squad.

Now this is my opinion.

Everybody ain't got to agree but nobody here really seems to be defending that PG is a #1.They just seem to be making excuses as to why that's ok. I agree, i think its fine that he's not a #1. He's still a star. But people claimed he's more than that.

on good teams. We have different definition of what a great scorer is. A guy who scores 25ppg on losing teams and bad shooting is a great scorer to you but not to me.

Duncan/Garnett were guys that when you needed a basket or needed to carry the offense, the could and did. Very few players could guard them successfully 1 on 1. But they weren't great scorers to you. They aren't the same as dudes like Jkidd lol

Kobe in his prime, guys that could drop 30 in their sleep, have multiple seasons averaging 25+ppg, probably at least 1 scoring title and been top 5 in the league in scoring multiple times.

I just meant that they were a perfect team for each other, they all defended well and could carry the offensove load on a given night. But they won games bc of their elite defense.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

111. "Paul George is discovering the weight of being Pacers' lone star (swipe)"
In response to Reply # 0

actual quote from the article:

"No wonder the guy needs a nap."

LOLZ

Sleepy lies the head that downs the 'quil.

http://www.cbssports.com/nba/eye-on-basketball/25488918/paul-george-is-discovering-the-weight-of-being-the-pacers-lone-star

"However, the load he has to shoulder has never been heavier. Consider what he said in late January about the wear and tear he's been experiencing. From the Indianapolis Star:

A few weeks ago, George elected to push through the soreness in his legs, resulting in inconsistent performance. But on Monday, he acknowledged that continuing such an effort could make him less effective.

“I think a lot of it is just being overly confident that I can go out and still do the things I was doing (earlier in the season),” George said. “It's not the case. It's hard and it's weighing on me right now, it's weighing on my body, it's weighting on my mental (approach). It just sucks knowing where you were at.”
Source: Paul George's minutes could be reduced to fight fatigue.

This is the issue with the design of the Pacers' offense and it's starting to really affect George's performance. George averaged 29.5 points in 36 minutes per game in 13 games during November, and the Pacers were outscoring their opponents by 15.6 points per 100 possessions with him on the floor, as George shot 48 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point range.

In January, those numbers dipped to 21.8 points in 34.8 minutes, shooting just 41 percent from the field and the Pacers outscoring opponents by just 3.5 points per 100 possessions. George hasn't shot over 41 percent in a single month since November.

Since Dec. 1, the Pacers are 17-20. George is ninth in usage. To put this in perspective, George has over 500 more points this season than the second-highest Pacer, Monta Ellis. His time of possession stats are lower than the point guards, which you would expect, but that's kind of the problem. Much of what the Indiana offense does is create quality looks for George, as it should. But it requires George to burst around screens for catch-and-shoot looks.

When the Pacers were grinding games out with Roy Hibbert and David West, that was one thing. But Indiana is eighth in pace this season, so not only is George moving more consistently possession by possession, but he's doing it on more possessions. All of this adds up to why George is 10th in distance traveled, per the NBA's SportVU data, and among those top 10 players in miles traveled on court? He's fourth in speed.

No wonder the guy needs a nap.

In a lot of ways, George finds himself in a similar situation as Paul Pierce did for the early and mid-2000s. A fantastic player with a killer instinct, carrying a team on his back. The Pacers' brain trust has shown it's capable of drafting and getting great talent, Myles Turner already looks like a phenom. But George is still the team's best weapon in most instances. Whether the shift to carry the burden falls on management to get another weapon or on the coaching staff to shift away from designs that feature him to this degree is unknown. Maybe it's as simple as George taking a step back to save his energy. That's not going to vibe with George's approach; he doesn't shy from leadership. But the long-term has to be part of the evaluation.

There's no alternative, though. Monta Ellis can't carry this team. Myles Turner isn't ready. Help is not coming, with the deadline having come and gone. The Pacers reconfigured their entire team around George, have made him their superstar, and he's delivered. But that comes with a price. The Pacers need to make getting George some help this summer an absolute priority. Otherwise they may risk George becoming tired of how much he's having to carry for Indiana, despite their success."

At the time Deron was better.

Top 2 Rajon? Hmmm doesn't sound familiar but it could be. Maybe it was when he was dumbing out in the playoffs.

Boogie is a great talent. Might be the best Center in the league. I'd still take a healthy Dwight over him, but he needs to lead his team to the playoffs.

Should've tried harder.

Your whole Knicks fandom and Melo standom... Is a L.

I don't know any of your other basketball agendas, it they're probably equally horrible.

In response to Reply # 145

Boogie still hasn't lead his team to the playoffs yet and has been on the clock to play more consistently on both ends.

Dork at 35 was getting styled on by TiaGoat & shitted on by Josh Smith at 36. He has ALWAYS been a mummy on D since day 1 & that hasn't changed so miss me w/ the age plea cops.

Tim could average 0 point & he would still be valuable since he leads the ENTIRE league in DRPM. Dirk would have to average at least 15 to come out even against run-of-the-mill forwards.

Dork will bow out with his tail b/w his legs having never won a playoff series after turning 33 & FatMelo turned into a bad contract once he hit 30, CRY!

WHAT'S GOOD *****? What's REALLY good?!?!????!!! Ha HA!
