Guard Patty Mills claimed Tuesday he didn’t have full knowledge of what teams the Spurs will face in their upcoming three-game road trip.
“I know we have Phoenix and the Lakers back to back (on Thursday and Friday), but I don’t know who we are playing after that,” he said.
Reminded the swing ends with an outing against some outfit called the Golden State Warriors on Jan. 25, Mills had a quick reply.
“That’s (next) Monday; this is Tuesday,” he said. “That’s a long way away in the NBA season.”
Despite the Warriors’ eye-catching destruction of Cleveland on Monday night, the Spurs in typical fashion showed up for practice Tuesday with their blinders on and tuned out any talk of their looming showdown with the defending NBA champions.
“They had a game last night, I guess,” guard Danny Green said of the Warriors. “They won. They won pretty good, I guess.”
Well, you could say that.
In a rematch of last year’s Finals, the Warriors embarrassed LeBron James and the Cavaliers, 132-98. The romp stood in stark contrast to the Spurs’ matchup with Cleveland last week, a contest they won 99-95 at home after first rallying from an early 15-point deficit and then surviving a desperate last-ditch push by the Eastern Conference’s top team.
While Warriors-Cavs was must-see TV for NBA fans, the Spurs acted as if they watched “MasterChef Celebrity Showdown” or “Supergirl” instead.
“No, I didn’t watch it,” Green said. “But I heard about it. Obviously, it’s everywhere, all over any news channel or any media feed. So I’ve heard about it. As I said, it looks like they are taking care of their business. When we see them, we will worry about that then. But right now, we’ve got to worry about Phoenix.”
While the hype about the season’s most anticipated game is sure to intensify as the week progresses, the Spurs (36-6) maintain they’ll live only in the present as they trek westward to face the Warriors (38-4).
But won’t that be hard to do with fans and media talking constantly about The Game?
“Not here, it’s not hard,” Green said. “We are thinking about the next game, taking it one game at a time. Golden State is not our next game. We don’t really think about what other teams are doing.”
But apparently that’s not the case in the Warriors’ locker room.
“(The Spurs’ success) pushes us,” Golden State guard Klay Thompson told Yahoo! Sports in Cleveland. “It definitely makes us better, knowing that they’re behind us.
“They’re playing great. It’s going to be fun when we see them next week. There are some good teams behind the Cavs in the East, but not a monster like San Antonio. But that’s going to make us better, to be honest with you.” WHAT'S GOOD *****? What's REALLY good?!?!????!!! Ha HA!
