To me in most high profile professions being gay is not a big deal and in most office settings now, too. I think it's still just a personal identity struggle and a family thing for most people. Even the moderate bigots are getting lots of "STFUs" now. Crazy how far it's come in ten years, maybe even less. I want to credit the internet and blah blah blah but the fact of the matter is that only helped the broader dynamic. All the attitudes toward homosexuality, marijuana, etc that are changing now are a result of something very basic but very powerful, and that is simply realizing that people you know and love are gay or smoke weed or whatever. It's not some boogeyman for xenophobes; these are your neighbors, co-workers, friends and relatives.

I agree that being openly gay is in reality natural and as human as any other expression of love.
But in the historical sense it is a big deal. I personally can't think of any high-profile sports journalist that is open, mostly because until the last five to ten years it was a burden for the gay journalist and possibly a reason to be fired or forced out.
It's also noteworthy because he is Latino and there are fewer role models / professionals who are people of color and openly gay and his sharing of his sexuality probably makes other men and women struggling with their sexuality more comfortable.
Hopefully in the next ten years we'll hear stories about men and women coming out and think of it as normal.

not sports-related but charles blow is a gay, and an increasingly prominent NYT columnist. obviously TV people like maddow and cooper. i just dont see being gay in the news media as anything all that novel.

you get the odd reactionary but most guys know gay dudes in the league and DGAF. i remember i was talking to a couple guys on the bruins about it, one was really articulate and open about it, basically said dudes' personal lives are their own and he accepts every one of his teammates. he said he knew there was gay guys in the league and that it generally wasn't an issue (this guy is now the captain of another team). another one was weird about it and oddly ESPN featured him in a poll about that exact topic. i think his quote was "it would be weird because you'd like have to shower together and stuff." so enlightened lol.
