"Wrestling post (it's about that time) pre-Summerslam - ?"

Been trying yo get back into it full swing...starting to win me back.

Couple of things;

- Rollins....meh, a decent placeholder champion, but has he beaten anyone cleanly? I realize that's the point but he has to beat someone without total BS right? (maybe I missed it while he was up-and-coming *shrug*)

- Seeing Heyman reminded me of three things...I miss REAL ECW on Ritner street, Heyman must be eating real well on WWE money, and pairing him with Lesnar is one of the best moves WWE has done. Great on the mic. But with all that said, no way Undertaker doesn't win at SS right? Ugh...

- Of the Diva revolution, I'm down with Team B.A.D. Naomi...yep. All three actually.

- If Cena wins both belts @ SS, I probably quit watching again.

They will tell you that they need you but they've got an ulterior motive - Personal gain

In response to Reply # 0

On one hand, if anyone's earned the right to be the man to dethrone Lesnar, it's Taker. I don't think Lesnar losing hurts him in any way but I think there's still money in that moment when Lesnar actually gets defeated by someone on a grand stage. As much as Taker has earned the right to be that guy (by doing the honours at Mania), I still think he's too much of a pro and a legend to take that moment from someone else so I don't think Taker will get the pinfall.

My money's on a DQ finish or a clean Lesnar win.

Would be fun to see play out. Lord knows where you go with it but it'd be entertaining.

I'd actually like to see Rollins take the titles, which I think he will - he took the clean loss on Raw to Cena, plus the announcers are even talking about Rollins not having generated enough respect as champ so I think he'll take the win. What happens afterwards though...?

4. "NXT Brooklyn is looking pretty great on paper"
In response to Reply # 0

Balor-Owens in a ladder match for the title and Banks-Bailey for the women's belt is a stacked double main event for me. Can't say I know much about Jushin Thunder Liger, but I'm in on anything Tyler Breeze does, so that's cool. Uhaa Nation debuting.

Rest of the card is looking kinda whatever to me. I'm terribly bored with Corbin, so him vs. Joe might be cool. Might not be. Tag title match could be cool. I don't care much for Blake and Murphy, although they're a bit more interesting with Alexa Bliss around, I guess.

So, yeah, should be a typically great NXT live special, even if the two main event outcomes seems pretty obvious. Brooklyn crowd should be pretty hype for the show. Place will probably go nuts should (when) Bailey takes the women's belt, which will be great.

Disappointed that Sting isn't wrestling either...

But this ends the WWE Slam (Gone to Mania, Survivor Series, Royal Rumble, and soon Summerslam)...

Its wild that they can get Raw numbers in a building for NXT tho. That lets us know how big the love is getting (huh!).

If Bayley loses, there's gonna be a Liz saving Macho Man from Queen Sherry at Mania 7 amount of crying in that arena.

They're both so great. Just a perfect end to a multiple-year arc there. I guess Bayler's gonna hold down the women's NXT division for a while, but she's totally ready for the call-up too.

Good luck to everyone else wrestling this weekend who has to try and follow that up.

People have really been buzzing about this match. Good to see these chicks killing it. Some of those moves they were doing were nuts...When Banks jumped over the ref, over the ropes, and landed on Bayley that shit had me marking out. Excellent match....

Just an all-around great NXT show. Maybe their best live special yet? I don't remember one match I was underwhelmed by. I guess I could've gotten more out of the Crews debut, but he did enough to show that he's gonna just blow up quickly. The tag match was a lot of fun, and Corbin-Joe was probably the best match either of them have had in NXT so far. Then the women's match is a match of the year candidate and the NXT title match was just brutal. WWE's got an embarrassment of talent right now.

Seriously, if you get to see them live, do it. Almost went to ROH, glad I decided against it. So much fun from start to finish. Enzo and Cass got a hue pop in the taping before. Gave me hope for their transition to the main roster. Eva Marie got all the (genuine) boos. The two main events were incredible. And I always love yelling at Baron Corbin. Don't know if they showed this, but the four horsewomen had a curtain call moment.

They showed the curtain call. They almost got me with that one. That was one helleva match. They got the storytelling dead right. When Sasha stomped Bayley's hand to try to stop her from reaching the ropes, maaaaaaaan. And yeah...movez.

A few of the other matches were cool(New Day was hilarious, Ambrose and Reigns/Wyatts past history is enough to at least make me pay attention)......but the remaining 4 matches are really the only ones I'm interested in and care about the outcomes. So in that regard, I'm glad that after 2 hours, I've got something I care about.

Oh, absolutely. Feels like there's been a lot of filler so far, but this match, Cesaro-Owens, women's match and the main event should all be great.

Jon Stewart should've left The Daily Show like five years ago and just joined the WWE as a GM or authority figure or some shit.

Before that amazing ending, though, Rollins and Cena were again awesome. They work so well together.

No, turning heel would make him the biggest heel. At most we'd get a similarly split reaction due to some smarks cheering him while the families, women, and children who currently cheer him boo the everloving shot out of him

WWE didnt show the undertaker tap until the replay...so it sets up a rubber match at Wrestlemania. Also Brock never tapped, he passed out. So it protects Brock by not having him get pinned or tapped. It makes people want to see a rematch. And it makes the rivalry even more personal.

Already half the audience, at least, didnt want to see part 2.

This is a no win situation at Mania. Brock wins and Taker loses at WM again and seemingly his retirement match. Taker wins and we waste all we built up Brock for on a washed up has been on his way out.

Lesnar is a real life legitimate badass. Everyone knows it.

Sportscenter was broadcasting live from out front of the Barclays.

You're flirting with being something pseudo-legitimate, people's interest is going to be especially piqued.

And to turn THAT in? Oh man. What a missed opportunity.

They hyped up the streak, they hyped up Brock not tapping or getting pinned in 2 years...so realistically there is no way for the Taker to beat Brock, so what happens, Taker taps, ring bell rings but Ref didn't call it, so Brock is confused, Taker chokes Brock out...

But have Taker look really impressive in losing.

Then between now and Mania Taker shows up occasionally haunting Lesnar trying to get one more crack at him, but Lesnar just laughs him off. On some "Get real old man I beat your ass twice"

Have Lesnar win the title again at Survivor Series.

How does Taker get one more crack at Lesnar? The Royal Rumble. Taker wins the Rumble.

Taker/Lesnar 3 at Cowboys Stadium for the WWE Championship. Taker wins, retires with the title, forfeits it the next night on Raw and rides off into the sunset. It's simple, it makes sense, and no one's starpower really takes a hit.

The 2 big matches had screwy finishes.....I was loving both matches until the end, and then was completely confused by the endings I just watched.

Owens-Cesaro was good, which was not surprising.

The Divas match was disappointing, but I guess I should've seen that coming....how could a 9 person elimination tag be all that good?

The first 6 matches and 2 hours were largely boring, other than New Day's comedy.

The NXT show was way better.

In response to Reply # 53

The 2 matches that really deserved clean finishes were denied them...

Rollins/Cena was a really good match but Rollins dominating the way he did was bizarre in light of Cena's RAW promo. I honestly think Rollins should've taken that win cleanly as his reign really needed it. Besides, all he needed was the knee shot at the end followed by the Pedigree - no chairs were needed. Baffled by how Stewart will be explained in this.

Disastrous booking for Taker/Lesnar too. Taker comes out really bad: he taps, he knew he tapped, but then hits a low blow. I was convinced Lesnar would take the win but this was badly done.

Really good PPV otherwise though!

If it is, I'm surprised that they're reinventing a character who's wrestled something like 6 matches in 6 years. Curious to know if he's actually going to engage in an actual heel run or if this was a way for everyone to win and move on...?!

The thing everyone will talk about is the ending of the PPV and John Stewart's weird interference.

New Day will get some remeberance for their great show.

But let us never forget that Rollins single handily carried a struggling to keep up with him John Cena into a Match of the year up until the end candidate. He was just non stop with innovation all match.

They followed up a mostly dud of a pay per view with one of the more interesting Raws in ages.

- I assume Rollins is going to defend the US title against Cena, then wrestle again and defend against Sting. What a hoss. He should win them both too.

- but if they opt to put the title on Sting, that's kind of cool too. It's something different at least right? Sting doesn't really want a run with the title, but it would be a nice accomplishment for him anyways. So you put the title on him for about 5 minutes, or at least until Raw the next night, then Sheamus cashes in on Sting. In an instant, Sheamus has some of the most toxic heat ever.

Get his name in the record books then let Sheamus take it.

I hate Sheamus and just want him to cash in and be done with it already so if that speeds up the process then ok.

Rollins is MVP right now, I still can't get over how good he was at Summerslam. Heyman was right about him when he said he is a guy who every few years you'll look back and be like wow I can't believe I thought he was so good a few years ago considering how much better he is now.

I can't think of another tag team brimming with this much personality and charisma.

New Age Outlaws I guess but they're a little too corny at times to really be on this level.

Their celebration after winning the titles was nothing short of marvelous. I hope Vincent is as behind this incarnation as he was the gospel edition

It's terrifying to think that Vince thought the initial version of New Day would get them over as babyfaces. Like he was shocked it wasn't working. They sugarcoat it, but if you read between the lines it paints a picture of how out of touch Vince is. Happy that these 3 talented guys stuck it out and are now must see TV every week.

http://www.sescoops.com/jimmy-snuka-arrested-to-be-charged-with-third-degree-murder-involuntary-manslaughter/

WWE Hall of Famer “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka was arrested this morning at his New Jersey home and will be charged with third-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter for the death of his girlfriend more than 32 years ago.

Snuka was arraigned at 1:50 p.m. Tuesday at the Lehigh County Central Booking Center. He was sent to county jail under $100,000 bail.

Earlier this month, Snuka’s wife revealed that he was diagnosed with stomach cancer.

In his 2012 autobiography, Snuka maintained his innocence and said Argentino’s death ruined his life.

“Many terrible things have been written about me hurting Nancy and being responsible for her death, but they are not true,” he wrote. “This has been very hard on me and very hard on my family. To this day, I get nasty notes and threats. It hurts. I never hit Nancy or threatened her.”

* TNA wrestler, and the (ex?) husband of Ric Flair's daughter and current WWE diva, is arrested and charged with domestic battery
* Jimmy Snuka finally getting charged for killing his GF over 30 years ago

All the while it's 2015 and Sting is about to wrestle for the WWE Championship.

Sting is on his way to winning the WWE World Title. Maybe he's got Seth down after a Scorpion Death Drop or has him in the Scorpion Death Lock, doesn't matter. Sting is about to win the title. Triple H ain't having it. No way is he letting the WCW guy carry the WWE belt. He sends Sheamus down to cash in. He hits Sting with the briefcase and he's knocked out on the outside of the ring. Hands the ref the briefcase, triple threat, Rollins gets up, Brogue Kick, 1-2-3. Sheamus is the champion, Sting isn't beaten so he saves face in the "loss."

Next night on Raw Rollins is all "WTF was that?" to Triple H and HHH explains he needed to do what's best for business and he couldn't let Sting take his belt. He gives Seth his rematch and tells him the belt is coming back with the Authority at HIAC and in that we finally get the HHH turn on Seth. HHH helps Sheamus retain, becomes the Authority's new champion, and we work our way to Mania with Seth and HHH and meanwhile we likely feed Sheamus to Roman.

But Seth is a great heel... But this would elevate him further (start winning clean) and no longer leaves Sheamus just floating... Make that dude a powerful heel...

But outside of them, people will cheer for people who are entertaining and have a great work rate, so as long as WWE tells the kids Seth is a good guy they'll cheer, and the rest of us already are ready to cheer for him as he continues to put on outstanding matches. This is the guy who was the star of The Shield towards the end of their run, and he will kill it in the Shawn Michaels like smaller guy in a big guy pond roll.

In fact, part of my booking would be to have Triple H force Seth to be #1 in the Rumble, put on an amazing iron man like performance, make it all the way to the end (final 4 or 5ish) when Triple H himself puts himself at #30 and eliminates Seth. Have some heel eventually win it and go on to Mania to challenge Roman.

Save the "rising tide lifts all boats" bullshit because that's not the case.

The longer they continue to rely this heavily on the stars of yesteryear at the expense of building their current crop to greater heights, the more they need to rely on the stars of yesteryear.

Present these younger guys as a big deal and they'll be a big deal. These motherfuckers need to stop trying to hotshot with AA era guys and actually focus on building a roster that doesn't need those guys so that when they do bring in a legend it's actually a bonus that adds to an already great show instead of being the whole fucking show (c).

I love Stone Cold as much as the next guy, but you have a crop of young stars and you throw Austin on the cover a couple years after Rock? I mean at least Rock was technically still wrestling sorta. How many retrospectives can we do on something that was just 15 years ago? Promote the young guys (and gals). They're great and it'll help in the long-term.

I agree, having Sting and the Dudleys in for more than a cameo is weak and to the detriment of the brand, but it could be worse...watch TNA for a week. Jeff Jarrett. Bobby Lashley. Mr. (Kennedy) Anderson. Matt Hardy. Jeff Hardy. MVP. I gave it two weeks...that was four weeks too many.

They're fun, they're still good, and it doesn't have that mild air of sadness that some tag team returns have like DX.

But they've been around for 20 years, no spring chickens. They are slowing down, and I doubt that they can do a long term, full-time run. I love the Dudleys, I'm a veteran of the bingo hall at Ritner Street, but if they show up out of nowhere and win the belts, that IMO lessens the rest of the tag division (New Day, PTP, even Ascension) which are pretty decent. Develop the young talent instead of trotting out the retreads. Look at how they've built up the Divas, no need to bring in Medusa or Sunny. Same thing needs to happen for the men....the talent is there, or at least available, just develop it and book better.

John Cena, while technically a product of the tail end of the Attitude Era, is really the model for how WWE has been presented ever since his ascension

the anti-Attitude, the "Attitude Adjustment" Era

and yet they keep teasing and teasing and teasing a return to TV-14 "greatness" that honestly after so many years of the TV-PG "Cena" style looks kind of outdated

I don't know why it's so hard to just let the new guys be "the guys"

and let the legends be the legends

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

Plus, Kofi's the more established hand of the two "speed guys" in New Day, so you roll with him and Epsilon as your tag.

Though if they wanted to put the IC belt on Xavier like Ambrose had the US Title during the Shield's run, I don't think anybody'd be too mad at it. Book him like Daniel Bryan's heel "big gold" run and you've got some fun times there.

122. "Why Wrestling Matters (masked man swipe)"
In response to Reply # 0

Awesome read, and great to see mainstream cred coming to wrassling. Lotta good links and gifs in the article proper if you click

http://grantland.com/features/why-wrestling-matters-wwe-vince-mcmahon-mainstream-attention-brock-lesnar-the-rock-jon-stewart/

Thanks to the Internet, nerd culture, and transcendent performers like Brock Lesnar and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, WWE and professional wrestling as a whole are enjoying a high point of mainstream acceptance and popularity

by THE MASKED MAN ON SEPTEMBER 9, 2015
In 1982, on Late Night With David Letterman, pro wrestling made a surprise run-in. Andy Kaufman — comedian, star of Taxi, and frequent Saturday Night Live guest — had been improbably feuding with Memphis wrestling star Jerry “the King” Lawler. The two had been at odds since Kaufman had shown up at Lawler’s regional promotion, calling the Mid-South crowd hayseeds and challenging women to matches, claiming to be the “Inter-Gender Wrestling Champion of the World.” It was a shtick he had worked in his stand-up act, and as a longtime wrestling fan (and committed meta comic), Kaufman was desperate to take the gimmick to the actual ring. Before Lawler, Kaufman had pitched the stunt to Vince McMahon Sr. — head of the promotion that would become WWE — and McMahon turned him down because he feared that letting a skinny comedian participate would delegitimize the pro wrestling enterprise.

When Kaufman finally brought his provocative routine to Memphis, it caught fire immediately. He professed to be from Hollywood and sneered at the bathing habits (or, he implied, lack thereof) of the Memphis fans. Eventually Lawler grew tired of Kaufman, got the comedian in the ring, and dropped him in back-to-back piledrivers that left fans in the packed Mid-South Coliseum screeching in delight. Kaufman left the arena in an ambulance.

When Lawler and Kaufman appeared on Letterman to bury the hatchet, the host probably thought he was booking an offbeat comedy bit. What he got was something totally different, but to wrestling fans something familiar — the two sat side by side and awkwardly sniped at each other, until Lawler eventually stood up and smacked Kaufman out of his chair. Kaufman launched into an expletive-laced monologue that nearly got him banned for life from NBC. Letterman was visibly shaken.

It was a singular mainstream moment in pro wrestling history — because of the platform, because of the cool factor of both Letterman and Kaufman, and because of the legitimacy engendered by Lawler’s slap. If judged by staying power, it belongs among the top 10 moments in wrestling pop culture history. Critics regarded this appearance as the epitome of Kaufman’s brilliance. They thought it was a postmodern comedic performance. But it really was an early-era worked shoot. This wasn’t an innovation as much as it was Pro Wrestling 101.

But Kaufman did accomplish something important — he showed the wrestling business the path to widespread popularity. WWE, which has spent much of the subsequent decades chasing mainstream press and approval, missed out on its chance to hit the jackpot when McMahon Sr. declined Kaufman’s pitch. And while it’s easy to dismiss WWE’s chase for pop-culture attention as a case of misplaced priorities, many of wrestling’s most iconic moments involved celebrities. And the instances when wrestling has been at its coolest, most popular, and most socially acceptable? Think about who was involved: Kaufman, Mr. T, Mike Tyson, Jon Stewart. But wait, you say. Stewart was on just a couple of weeks ago. Exactly — it’s starting to feel like we’re back there again.

“You know it’s fake, right?”

lesnar-brock-ufcJOSH HEDGES/ZUFFA LLC/GETTY IMAGES

Sometimes radio stations call me to do interviews. It happens when wrestling is in the news — when wrestlers die or get arrested, or during the week of WrestleMania. It happens on slow news days on sports radio stations in cities that had vibrant wrestling territories back in the day. Lately, though, it’s been happening for another reason. People want to talk about why wrestling is popular again.

When I started writing for Deadspin, “mainstream” sports outlets wouldn’t cover pro wrestling at all. The most common comments were, “You know wrestling is fake, right?” and, “Why are you running this garbage?” By the time I started writing for Grantland, though, I could feel attitudes shifting. Wrestling articles were published in The New Yorker and The Atlantic, and a wrestling essay just made Best American Sports Writing.

Sports Illustrated and Rolling Stone have regular wrestling beats now. Deadspin’s wrestling writing these days is often republished from Jezebel and Kotaku — Gawker Media’s partner sites on women’s issues and gaming, respectively. The environment for wrestling writing is wide open and thriving.

Wrestling fans used to joke (or complain) that sports outlets cover wrestling only when somebody dies. For years, that was true. But now ESPN covers WWE events with the same interest it once reserved for wrestling tragedies, even if the network doesn’t report wins and losses as fact. Brock Lesnar showed up in Bristol to hype WrestleMania and SummerSlam this year, and SportsCenter broadcast live from the site of SummerSlam on the day of the event.

“There’s no doubt that we’re in a moment where wrestling is getting increased attention from mainstream outlets,” said Sports Illustrated media columnist Richard Deitsch when I emailed him this week. “I see it more as mainstream acceptance than a surge of popularity. The real reason behind ESPN covering the WWE is that it’s good for ESPN’s business. The WWE has a huge fan base of 12-50 year-olds and particularly … men who have discretionary income. ESPN wants those eyeballs the same way they want Fantasy football-playing eyeballs. The network already has gone down the rubicon when it comes to having actors and singers on its shows. Bringing in WWE people is no different.”

So why has the media executed such a dramatic turnaround in its regard of the squared circle? Some of it can surely be attributed to the impulse to follow what others are doing — one radio station thinks wrestling is popular again because another station covered it first. And many outlets appear happy to cover wrestling once they’re given the cover of others doing it before them and proving there’s an audience.

But is wrestling actually more popular now, or has the media just learned to accept sports entertainment for what it is? WWE’s numbers say that the growth is real. Contrary to some early fears (mine included), the WWE Network is earning more money at $9.99 a month than the old pay-per-view model was making at about $50 per show. According to their second-quarter earnings report, the WWE Network plus standard PPV revenue generated $131 million in the 12 months prior to June 30. Annual PPV revenue between 2003 and 2013 ranged from $70 million to $95 million. And thanks largely to the network, more people are watching the PPVs: According to Matthew Altman, WWE’s senior director of communications, WrestleMania 30 reached a million households in the U.S. for the first time (on WWE Network and pay-per-view combined), and WrestleMania 31 hit 1.6 million homes globally, which is WrestleMania’s biggest audience to date.1 According to Altman, average PPVs2 were typically seen in 300,000 to 400,000 homes prior to the network, and now each is seen in more than a million.

If there is a real bump, where is it coming from? Some of it is cyclical, to be sure. Fans who grew up in the ’80s and ’90s now have money to spend on wrestling, and have children to turn into a new generation of fans. There’s also a recurring technological trend, as wrestling’s high points have traditionally come at moments of television expansion — national broadcast TV in the ’50s, cable TV in the ’80s, massive cable expansion in the late ’90s (which meant enough space on the airwaves for multiple shows on competing channels). Now we have Internet streaming television, and the WWE Network is at the forefront of generating a new model of viewership.

The Triumph of Nerds

johnson-dwyane-the-rock-cena-johnRON ELKMAN/GETTY IMAGES

It’s undeniable that nerdiness has transformed from a stigma into a badge of pride in today’s pop culture, where everything is a potential source of nerdiness. You don’t have to look hard to find NFL nerds, beer nerds, hip-hop nerds, or car nerds. Most of the perceived sources of nerd antipathy have become outlets for people to express their idiosyncratic commitment. And the Internet has made it easier than ever for nerds of all stripes to commune with like-minded people — and to realize that there are others in the world who share their fascinations and obsessions. Some bastions of nerdy subculture might still be filled with awkward teenagers, but now they’re sharing space with the rest of the breathing world. Avengers: Age of Ultron grossed $458 million domestically this year. Some 8.1 million people watched the Game of Thrones season finale. This is not the geekdom of yesteryear, and the stigma attached to wrestling fandom has diminished as it has with other traditionally nerdy subcultures.

About that stigma. There’s one line that wrestling fans have had to endure throughout their lives: “You know that stuff’s fake, don’t you?” It is, and obviously so. In The Squared Circle, I traced social awareness of wrestling’s inherent falsehood back to the 1910s. Fans weren’t always in on the lie — not all of them, anyway — and promoters tried hard to maintain the appearance of genuine competition, but the idea that most of the audience hasn’t always been aware of what they were watching is absurd, especially once television put the pantomime punches onscreen. The first national star of the TV era was Gorgeous George, a wonderful undersize buffoon whose manufactured despicableness in the 1940s and ’50s was so obvious that only a child couldn’t see that the entire enterprise was similarly contrived.

Years before, in 1934, a promoter named Jack Pfefer got squeezed out of his position in the New York wrestling scene, and so he went to the sports editor of the New York Daily Mirror and confessed that the whole endeavor was fake. Pfefer was famously open about the sport’s falsehood, once saying to A.J. Liebling, “An honest man can sell a fake diamond if he says it is a fake diamond, ain’t it?” Even if Vince Sr. had been mindful of the appearance of legitimacy in his dealings with Kaufman,3 his son would hew more closely to the Pfefer line than to his father’s.

As Vince McMahon Jr.’s WWF laid bare the pretense of the sport, the slur endured. “You know that stuff’s fake, don’t you?” became a jab at the idea that anyone could enjoy a product so manufactured. But then came reality television. Now it’s impossible — or untenable, at least — to revel in the Real Housewives and sneer at pro wrestling’s falsehoods. Wrestling staged contrived contests years before The Challenge, and it had the audience voting on competitors via cheers decades before you could text in votes on American Idol.

In the (real) sports world, great games are celebrated with lines like, “It couldn’t have been better if it had been scripted.” Well, pro wrestling specializes in endings that are too good to be true, and the mythmaking style from WWE promo packages has influenced the way the NFL, UFC, and almost every other professional sport promotes its talent. Which is all to say that big-time competitive sports have caught up with “sports entertainment.” Fifty years ago, Muhammad Ali modeled his public persona on Gorgeous George and became one of the most iconic athletes in history. Now executives across various sports and industries want to be Vince McMahon.

It’s Still Real to Me, Dammit

Wrestling’s current mainstream embrace isn’t due to some grand new accomplishment in WWE or the indie scene.4 It’s just that pop culture at large appears to have finally figured out what wrestling is about, and it’s getting the credit it has long deserved. Still, among non-fans, there persists a feeling that wrestling is something less than both a sport and an art form. It’s true that wrestling has never aspired to be high art, and it’s certainly different from professional football or Hollywood acting, but it’s not inferior. “Real” athletes, professional and otherwise, have found a home in pro wrestling since its inception, including onetime real grapplers like Gus Sonnenberg, Ernie Ladd, and Kurt Angle, none of whom seemed embarrassed by their work in the ring.5

The perception that wrestlers are just bodybuilders who’ve learned simple dance routines — a notion that the late-’80s WWF helped perpetuate — has been just about completely debunked, thanks to Brock Lesnar. When Lesnar, who had been an NCAA wrestling champion at the University of Minnesota before joining WWE, left pro wrestling in 2004, he was booed out of the ring for turning his back on the business. When he returned in 2012, fans welcomed him back because of all he’d accomplished in the intervening years. He tried out for the Minnesota Vikings with hardly any football experience and made a strong showing. When he didn’t make the NFL, he turned to MMA and in short order came to dominate the UFC’s heavyweight ranks, until a serious bout of diverticulitis cut his career short. By the time Lesnar reappeared in WWE, he carried the imprimatur of a real champion fighter. Every match that Lesnar has had since then has felt a little more real, either because of Lesnar’s unparalleled physicality or simply because sharing the ring with him lends prestige to his opponents. No one has to believe that John Cena could be a world-class MMA fighter for that transference to occur; fans just have to understand that the action in the ring is a legitimate, professional athletic feat.

(It must also be said that the evolving ring style in the modern era — away from the simplistic and drama-reliant “WWF style” and toward a rawer vision taken from the Territorial days and the contemporary indie scene — have also helped to make matches more convincing.)

Just as Lesnar’s foray into the UFC octagon helped the perception of the physical side of wrestling, so did Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s career in Hollywood help to buoy the acting side of WWE. It’s easy to watch pro wrestling and see only hammy machismo and overcooked emoting, but that underestimates the performers. What wrestlers do isn’t normal TV acting but rather a throwback to classical theater, when performers wore giant wooden masks to convey emotion to the back row — with booming WHOOOs and swooping roundhouse punches in place of the masks.

In the most recent period of pro wrestling’s mass appeal before this one, the late-’90s Attitude Era, the WWF star who took that back-row projection to soaring new heights was the Rock. Before wrestling, he was a backup defensive tackle at the University of Miami and tried to make it in the NFL, but eventually he ended up a wrestler, like his father and uncle before him. Rough as his early efforts were, he quickly developed into a timeless star, until, like Lesnar, he decamped for greener pastures. For the Rock, however, his goal was not a return to competitive sports but to a career in Hollywood, where his good looks and post-human physique quickly cast him as a new generation’s Arnold Schwarzenegger. Much like in his early wrestling days, his first few outings were uncertain, but eventually, by dint of discerning selection of roles, his commitment to the craft, and amazing PR, he developed into a movie star.

By adapting his in-ring bombast to the big screen, the Rock proved that wrestlers were talented actors in their own right. When he returned to WWE in 2011, the Rock brought with him not only that greater cachet but also a sea of action-flick fans who realized that there wasn’t much difference between an onscreen car crash and an in-ring highspot.

But the Rock’s success where others, like Hulk Hogan, had failed proved that wrestling acting is a totally different animal from Hollywood acting. Just watch when Hollywood stars agree to be worked into WWE story lines to promote new movies — they look ridiculous, corny, and lost. If in-ring acting were a lesser art, the Hollywood pros would be able to adapt, but instead they’re adrift. “Hollywood acting” and pro wrestling acting are different beasts, but one is not inherently inferior to the other. Nor is the athleticism found in wrestling lesser than the athleticism in “real” sports. What the Rock and Lesnar did was bridge those divides.

No Archetype

The Hollywood crossovers that work best occur when the visiting stars are legitimate wrestling fans who have internalized the style at a young age. Main eventers like Mr. T, throwaway hosts like Seth Green, timeless stars like Andy Kaufman — they were successful because they knew exactly what they were getting into.

Last month at SummerSlam, two different celebrities took part in matches — longtime wrestling fan Stephen Amell (who plays the Green Arrow on television) performed capably in a tag match. And in the semi-main event, Jon Stewart, recently retired from The Daily Show, intervened in the closing moments to hit John Cena with a steel chair and ensure victory for Seth Rollins. The media attention garnered by Stewart’s inclusion was enough to justify the disappointment many fans felt in the moment. And the next night on Raw, when Stewart got his comeuppance (an Attitude Adjustment) about 50 feet in front of me, the entire angle was vindicated in a moment of Kaufmanesque shock.

My initial response mistook the SummerSlam schmoz as a futile attempt at goosing WWE’s ratings, but after Monday night, it was clear that something else was afoot. Stewart wasn’t playing a mere Raw guest host. He was playing a pro wrestler. It doesn’t demean the craft to say that any more than it did to speak of Kaufman that way — or than it does to acknowledge that Bobby Heenan and Paul Heyman have been as integral to the product as any grappler.

The other significant aspect of Stewart’s appearance is that he’s an avowed fan — he makes it incrementally cooler to be a wrestling fan too. The same can be seen around the media world, with figures like Bill Simmons joining the announcer’s table on Raw, Jonathan Coachman making a Lesnar-like leap from WWE announcer to SportsCenter anchor, and director Max Landis making this exceptional 24-minute explanation of the form called “Wrestling Isn’t Wrestling”:

If the perception of wrestling is changing, it’s largely thanks to people like them. “I think that’s due to the increasing number of bloggers, podcasters and people in the sports media business who are so public about their fandom,” said Deitsch. “Whatever stereotypes about who is a pro wrestling fan I think have been blown up. There is no archetype.”

There’s no more ignoring the talents of the wrestlers. There’s no more stigma about nerdiness in general or wrestling in particular. There’s no question about whether or not pro wrestling is fake. Just like Jack Pfefer said, it’s a fake diamond. And as long as you know the deal, there’s no shame in selling — or buying — a fake diamond.

Andy Kaufman never thought of himself as a comedian. “I’ve never told a joke in my life,” he said. But he wasn’t ashamed to be a wrestler. After he was piledriven by Lawler, Kaufman was interviewed in his hospital bed. “I always thought wrestling wasn’t real,” he said, “but apparently, I guess at least this one was.”

It wasn’t. The thing people miss about Kaufman’s turn as a wrestling villain was that he wasn’t working on a meta level or deconstructing the art form. He wasn’t playing a comedy routine in the midst of a wrestling show. It wasn’t performance art.

He was being a pro wrestler, full stop. In a different way, so was Stewart. And the Rock will be, too, when he makes his next comeback. And so is Lesnar every time he steps in the ring. They’re all performing in different ways — doing things that a non-wrestling audience doesn’t always understand and that other actors and athletes can’t do. And it all adds up to an incredible show. That’s what’s great about wrestling. And that’s why wrestling has always deserved to be so popular. Maybe it seems so popular now because people are finally starting to figure that out.

He's green as fuck but he's got enough going for him that I still enjoy watching him despite his limitations.

He was the first person I thought of but u always figured he's not due to debut until after RR or mania and I was kind of excited when I saw the rumor. He makes perfect sense as an answer to Bob's Big Boy Strauma, at least from a character perspective. I'm certain I'm alone in wanting him for this though and I get why.

I think Rock is highly likely, or the other Uso. I read Jericho is a possibility and I couldn't be l3ss enthusiastic about that. Ditto Eric Rowan.

Bryan would be dope but wouldn't make a lick of sense as an answer to Braun.

He's the opposite of the general NXT model, so it's saying very little that they've cooled off on him. his countdown gimmick had him over for a good stretch but that kind of gimmick only goes so far no matter what.

I think he'll work much better on the main roster and a situation where he can play the enforcer for a baby face is a good role for him.

He could wind up a significant player just as easily as he could fizzle out, but I think he needs a little more of the on the job experience the main roster can give him. He's a project and I don't think more time in NXT will help him much. His look, size, presence (yes, I'd argue that that's a thing) and work rate make him a better bet for the main roster even as a project.

I won't be shocked if he does pan out, but his chances of survival are better with the main roster.

Even there though to me he just is like any other generic big man they've had through the years. Nothing seems special about him to me, but I've also never been that into guys who get by just on being big.

He doesn't need to talk right away and he doesn't need to stand there and look menacing.

He just needs to be able to convincingly kick ass to protect his friends for a while as he develops.

To be clear, I'm saying I think he'll be pretty good within the context of playing a specific role to introduce him to Raw and Smackdown, not advocating him for a big push as the new unstoppable monster.

Reigns is fine as a singles wrestler, or at least was until Vince's pubescent sensibilities took over the writing and booking of his character.

Further, he's more than held up his end in his matches with Orton, Bryan, and Lesnar this past year, not to mention the fatal four way that actually worked out very well for a match that's usually a complete clusterfuck. They carried those matches but he delivered on his end. His on screen relationship with Dean works very well despite the booking, which is shitty across the board.

He's not as far along as he perhaps should be at this point, but let's stop pretending he hasn't improved considerably since he debuted.

Corbin would be much more like Reigns was when the Shield debuted, not Reigns today.

I didn't want him to win it at Mania, they pushed him along too fast especially after his injury.

But he has done what we wanted him to do, had feuds with other people, won some matches, lost some matches and improved.

If he feuded with Rollins to finish out the year and won the belt at Survivor Series or Rumble I'd be ok with that.

The match with Brock holds up like a motherfucker and has a big fight feel. It's easy to give Brock all the credit for that but Reigns sold like like a champ, engaging with facial expressions and body language in ways he'll never get credit for from a large portion of the smark/indy spot monkey crowd.

The shit with Dean at Payback? That whole "well, there's no one left but us. loser buys the beers?"

If you're a man who has friends you consider brothers and can't relate to that moment, you're a soulless creature if ever there was one.

He's actually had some quality moments this year but the shitty WWE booking and lazy storytelling style over power those in a big way. You SHOULD, at this point, be at a place where you can't wait to see Reigns win, not in a place where you wouldn't mind, yet somehow Vince took the attributes that made him seem special and sucked the whole "Big Homie" aura out of him and here we are.

top....6. Top 6 in terms of overall match quality for wwe wrestlers.

It sounds absurd but there's a conversation there. After Seth, Brock Cesaro, Cena, Owens (largely with Cena)...I struggle to find a guy who has a more consistent ppv record in terms of quality. I'm a Shaemus mark because he's an impressive hoss from bell to bell (his character is another story, let's be clear), so he might have a claim there.

Reigns should be big money but somehow he's become the new Lex Luger. It'd be easier to live with his all punch offense if they took the micromanagement off of his character

I do still think it was too early for him to have taken the title at Mania, and I would like to see a little more versatility in his in-ring work but it's all sad considering the disastrous Rumble booking*. I agree with what's been said already - his match with Brock was epic, he had great matches against Big Show, Bryan, I'm very much enjoying the current Wyatts feud - he's working well.

Those boos aren't stopping though.

They're maybe lighting up a little but that may be attributed to peoples' love for Ambrose at this stage. It may be lazy, but I'd pull the plug and turn Reigns heel at this point. Can't really see him winning the fans over definitively so I'd reset him and tell the stories you want to. I'm sure in time, he'll win people back.

*Interesting how badly the last two Rumble bookings have gone - they should award the 2016 win to a heel so at least they get the right kind of boos this time.

Good news...it doesn't seem obvious either way.

Rollins is awesome as hell even though he has not been booked great. Like most indy cats, he fixes it all in the ring.

He was on wrestling god mode at Summerfest.

I think he keeps the US belt via cheating and then having a WCW finish of some kind with him losing to Sting. But you know we can't have Sting walking around as champ. The easy fix is briefcase shenanigans. But I hope like hell we don't see Sheamus, but they have to figure out how to get that briefcase away from him cuz he's ICE COLD. I wonder if he's still hella cool with Haitch from their 'workout buddy' days?

I'm gonna watch NOC as a secondary view to SEA vs GB even though I'm seeing GB throwing them down a flight of stairs and earning Chancellor the rest of the money he wants.

The one guy I come back to with him is Edge. Edge could do comedy and chicken shit really w3ll, but he had this extra level of anger (remember 'psycho' Edge) and ruthlessness that he could tap into when the time was right.

Seth needs to throw his aggression into overdrive and have convincing victories over both tonight.

Do it in a despicable, yet mostly legal way. Holding onto the ropes, maybe a figure four on the ring post, eye pokes, just have him take every liberty he can to keep those titles.

Since he's currently the workhorse, the swiveling whiner needs to fucking graduate to beast mode. We've already seen him do feats of strength nobody would expect from him. We know he can go. Give him some clean wins in dirty, dastardly fashion, ramp up his aggression, spite, and selfishness, and give us a true prime time heel.

They COULD start making him a face. White Pants Summerfest Rollins could carry the top of cards with absurdly good matches forever. Maybe they saw that. And you know they have to at least kinda think of how their world was so easy when The Shield was a thing. The random PPVs basically booked themselves. Shield vs 3 folks = ballin.

The Shield was the best, most refreshing new thing they've has since....fuck... Brock? Rapper Cena? I dunno. it goes back pretty far though.

Now, if I REALLY wanted to work the fantasy book, I'd plant serious seeds for a Rollins face turn in the Cena match and use a generic third partner in a guy like Jericho or Kane for the Shield.

Then I'd have The Wyatt Family obliterate whoever the third guy was on his way to the ring, again leaving Reigns and Dean alone to get beat down.

Seth makes the save, looks down at Reigns and Dean and just bounces.

Finish the night with Sting and Rollins. Let Sting have a bit of his Crow mystique in the match while ultimately losing to Seth. Sting offers a hand and Seth accepts.

Hunter, Kane, and Show attempt a beat down to both guys. Sheamus cashes in on Seth, and a bigger beat down ensues. Sting grabs a chair to even things up a bit, then the screen goes black. The Wyatts Show up and start the beating before Dean and Reigns make the save WITHOUT FUCKING MUSIC.

Let everyone go at it for about a minute before Baron Corbin's music hits. The ring parts into two halves, Corbin comes down, stands in the middle, gets in Hunters face, gets in Brays face, gets in Braun's face before turning like he's going to attack the Shield/Sting....before turning and mollywhooping Braun. The faces clear the ring, Corbin and Ambrose lock eyes, hug, and Reigns does the Shield fist, followed by Dean and Corbin. They all look at Seth, who looks at them and mouths something along the lines of "I'm sorry. What did I do?" before rolling out of the ring.

Tomorrow night the Authority/Wyatt "Ministry" or whatever the fuck the y call it delivers a promo about power, how to get it, and what it takes to keep it. Bray says some shit about there being time enough for titles but for the time being, power is what he craves. Hunter echos that sentiment and does some speaking for Sheamus. So we'd get a new faction of Sheamus as champ with the Wyatt's as his enforcers. Kane and Show get unceremoniously dismissed in the process.

Far as Seth, we see him come out and apologize to The Shield for what he did and talks about how what he did was unforgivable and how grateful he was that they did what they did.

the next month would follow Seth going it alone without trying to patch things up with The Shield as the Shield guys reach out. I'd take some time to map things out until Survivor Series, where we'd get the full blown Shield reunion, albeit with Corbin added to the mix. We'd get explanations to his presence, ideally with him being an old friend of Dean's.

There's no downside to this angle. Obviously the gaps would have to be filled with Cena, Sting and what have you, but it elevates everyone in a big way, keeps Reigns protected in the Shield dynamic, Corbin gets a big time introduction and a role he's well suited to given his limitations that WOULD help add some depth and intrigue to this whole mix.

The whole thing would be hotshot like crazy but by the end of the night we'd see the entire main event landscape altered in huge ways, we'd get the Shield back, the Wyatt's would breathe serious life into a stale ass Authority story that shows no time of going away soon, and there'd be a ton of relatively fresh stories to tell over the next two months. We'd also get a reason to watch SS for once, that is if they did it correctly.

That's my fantasy book for the night.

Awesome read. And I like the idea of slamming some stuff together to make folks matter/stronger. And that's even with this whole plan having a little WCW to it. A 'real' heel group with actually threatening folks would be cool. And the matches would be the best.

In a situation like that where you stuff so much into a single show it would work by playing out the details like a serialized tv show, where they peel back the layers a bit each week to reveal the who/what/why/when/where of it all.

The Us title went from useless to the most entertaining thing on Raw to useless again in a matter of months. Seth can always say he didn't give a shit cause he has the real title or had 2 matches. I'm a lot less sure about the WWE title, but I think he'll retain the title in a weasely way that pisses off HHH who then challenges him later. I think they've been teasing Sheamus' cash-in too much. Don't think they'll pull the trigger. But they could go with a one secone Sting title win followed by the cash-in. again, 2 matches gives Seth an out. I wouldn't be surprised if he got screwed either, probably in a lame (kane) way too.

Don't know where they're going with that HIAC match - Brock has literally destroyed Undertaker's legacy but it looks like they've found one more way to humiliate him against Brock.

was listening to scott hall on austin's podcast. pretty incredible insight on getting over, drawing heat, etc. basically traditional stuff that's been lost in today's program, and supposedly what guys aren't allowed to do anymore. no, i ain't saying bring kayfabe back.

while i agree the old-timers don't belong in the ring anymore, vince would benefit having a guy like hall book the territory and/or be on the creative side.

at some point they have to move on from the old guys. Just cold turkey "F it"...Taker, Sting, Kane, Big Show...it's a wrap boys. (edit: and face it, Chris "The Cool Dad" Jericho has lost a step too. Pull the plug.)

Seth Rollins is the best pure in ring performer since Shawn Michaels. It's a shame he had to be involved in that match in his prime.

And a big chunk of the indies are in WWE now. There's no reason for Rollins to be in the ring with folks who can't straight up go. And if they have any access to NJPW (they got Liger for NXT recently and clearly they're recruiting), things are even more inexcusable.

The HBK comparisons have been coming on for a minute now, and that's about as high a compliment as a wrestler can get when we're talking about a guys ring work.

It's fucking absurd what they're doing with him. They don't have another Rock, but they DO have another Michaels and they should be elevating him in a big way right now.

They also have their Punk replacement in Owens and a guy who should have been another Piper/Pilman/Austin hybrid by now in Ambrose, but that's another story.

These guys have no fucking clue how much talent they have on this roster.

Stop hot shotting with old retirees from yesterday.

I hope Brock/Taker III at HIAC is the last time we see Taker wrestle. No more of these guys. Let this generation work develop, and for crying out loud, become something that doesn't NEED to bring in ex Monday Night War and Ruthless Aggression retirees. I can only hope Hunters back goes out, Kanes neck gets fucked up, and Shows knees go out, not because I wish ill on these guys but because it's crystal fucking clear that that's is what's going to take to get vince to stop relying so heavily on these guys.

The best part about the Hogan tape was that it ensured we'd never have to see him in a WWE ring again. I'm all for these guys getting a pay day but jesus h, their time is done and while they eat up big main events the youngsters aren't getting the attention and platform they need to improve their stature. This shot is starting to hit WCW status.

I put it all on Demon Kane costing Rollins the match and next week not knowing what Rollins is talking about.

Really glad to read that he's doing ok.

I hear what people are saying about Sting giving it up now but I'd really like to see him in one more match before he hangs it up - I think he deserves a great big match win so that would be a nice send-off.

What they do with him doesn't matter at all.

Nobody believes in him because his entire career has been a non stop flip flop of heel/face turns and being weak followed by reminding us he is a monster.

This is just 1 more page in it. They can use the next 3 months to make him undefeated and a monster champ and I'll have no interest, or they can let him do what he does now and I'll have no interest. 1 match doesn't change any of it.

But even in the last year, his KO Punch (sigh!) still knocks people out at least. His chokeslam still had value in it. I do think if he had been allowed to accomplish more in that match, people would've respected the effort more than anything.

What was Lillian Garcia even thinking when she said "Ladies and gentlemen, give it up for The Big Show" like she expected them to applaud or something!?

After being belly-to-phuckin-belly suplexed, germanned four times and mauled like that?!

I gotta say, I love what they've done with Brock but it seems like they've dented careers in building him up: Cena @ SummerFest, Taker's streak and subsequent SummerFest match...

I'm almost nervous about what element of Taker's legacy Brock will tear from him at HITC. You've already taken everything Brock: the streak, you made him TAP, you made him steal a super dirty and cheap win which hurt his career more in my eyes, he collapses before he gets to the curtain... what's next?!

- Props to not feeling the need to call it an Ironwoman, Ironlady, Irondiva or Ironthot Match or add a Bra & Panties stip.

- The build has been superb so far.. I'm genuinely invested and semi-expecting a MOTY candidate. I care more about this match than anything so far on the main roster's HIAC card.

- In fact, a surprising number of my MOTY candidates this year have been from NXT Women's wrestling.

- I don't think I mind who wins, but I'd probably lean to Bayley and I'm assuming it will be since Sasha's starting in the main roster these days. Both deserve the main event spot though - Sasha's turning into the most complete women's wrestler since Lita IMHO.

- THERE ARE ENTERTAINING TIMES AHEAD

The important part is Iron, so call it what it is. Two women in a long ass battle. If Iron was followed by another stupid term (like Diva) I'd be against it, but I actually watched the promo and thought "All that love for women and you still have to refer to it as Ironman? You keep saying it's the first of its kind and you don't even give it a new name?"

really looking forward to this match though.

For some reason the idea of explicitly calling it Ironwoman would make me feel like someone was lowkey implying "Well, it's not QUITE as tough as for the men..."

But I can see the other side too... like you said, at least they've not crow-barred Diva in there.

I'm torn on what would be better.

I see the side of the coin saying you call it an Ironwoman match just like you say Mailwoman if it's a woman delivering your mail.

But something about it also makes it sound 2nd rate when you say ironwoman (patriarchy right?). It's likely just an entire life of women's wrestling being 2nd rate in the WWE that gives me that feeling though and not anything to do with the actual name.

Ironman is an established term that has nothing to do with sex.

I think calling it Ironwoman and making it 30 minutes is an extra step to making it condescending too since it's half the length of the men's matches.

They sometimes refer to the matches as "Divas matches" but they've made sure to call it the women's championship and go out of their way to show as much love as possible. I believe they also said "Ironwoman" the first time they talked about it, so it felt like a deliberate change to go back to Ironman. As if it wouldn't sell otherwise.

It just felt a little weird. It didn't make me cringe like half of the women's booking does.

If Vince really wants an heir to Cena, JJ is the man for the job. This dude is as All American as it gets.

It's not just his his look or size or ring style, all of which seem tailor made for Vince's preferences, but he's got a certain ability to "fire up" in his matches in a way that clearly makes him special. He doesn't ooze charisma but he has this point in his matches where he gets this fire and you just can't wait for him to make that comeback or hit that spear.

The RAW crowds are gonna love this guy. Even the smarks will get behind him.

Mark my words. Bookmark this shit. I've seen enough. He'll have a goddamned rocket on his back within six months of hitting the main roster.

"White meat" doesn't mean "white", it just means a clean cut guy who will appeal across the board, though obviously there's still a stigma attached to the "all American" label whereby people simply think of a clean cut white male.

He wants white meat & potatoes, ma & pa kent more than anything else in his Face Of The Company and this kid has that quality in droves.

Vinces problem is just plain doesn't know how to push most black guys without marginalizing them as Black Guys. This is especially true if their "brand" of blackness as people skews a little hood or country.

I think JJ has that middle America element that cuts across color lines and stereotypes and Vince will pounce on it.

Yeah i agree that being black is generally a handicap in the WWE, but there's a legit argument to be made for the true handicap being whether or not Vince "gets" a guy or not and I think Vince will see nothing but dollar signs in JJ and give him a quality push.

I just have a feeling about this dude.

He's so early in his career that it's impossible to predict obviously, but the love for him is very strong.

Jason Jordan reminds me of Shelton Benjamin, down to the same gimmick pretty much, and I think he'll be treated that way. Benjamin also had a ton of what it takes to make it but never got the shot, I don't think they will view Jordan as the next Cena.

I've been catching up on my NXT stuff. It is by far the best overall thing they're doing. The specials are the best wrestling shows they put on. And the women matches are supreme. The gravity of the situation when they have these matches is so easy to see on everyone's face. Maybe it is because the ladies are so obviously emotional about the matches before, during, and after. And hell...the surrounding shenanigans are on the money too. When they roll up and show Bailey and The Boss lifting weights/running/randomly training, I'm all in on everything.

It ain't just a chick thing tho. I remember not too long ago that Sami Zayn was bringing the same gravity and power and 'consequence' to all of his big matches. AKA it can be done.

It just doesn't work as well when it is Cena and he's obviously gonna win. Or its a random 'two-month program' face against Seth By God Rollins. Meanwhile, Cesaro is chillin. Neville is eating time doing nothing big.

In response to Reply # 235

A big part is that they only have 1 hour a week compared to WWE having 3 for Raw, 2 for SD and whatever other shows each week.

There is nothing on NXT that is meaningless, every match has a purpose and the result effects what happens to the wrestler after it's over. Compare that to Raw where the world champ can lose over and over again on Raw and it doesn't matter, or Orton fights Sheamus for what feels like 23 straight episodes with nothing on the line ever.

Raw feels unimportant because it is which leads to PPVs feeling unimportant because they are. NXT makes you legitimately feel that what is happening at that moment will change the wrestlers lives forever which in many ways it does.

He's in his usual state of denial and blaming everything but the quality of the product for this decline. I tend to think there IS some actual truth to that, but only some.

What's funny about his position on ratings in this context is I've heard countless stories about the way he looks at how certain guys who don't pop a quarter hour and sees that as proof that they aren't draws, yet does not extract the notion that his entire product isn't drawing from the overall rating declining.

Reigns and Bray put on a hell of a Raw main event a few weeks ago and it drew little more than flies because the product as a whole is week and their story in particular has been very lackluster despite their physical segments being solid.

That McMahon bubble is a motherfucker. Those people look at all the data and look for the angles they can use to flatter themselves and dismiss anything that paints them in a lesser light.

Why rehash a Wyatt vs Taker feud? Why not just give him a moment and let's see him at Mania. Though they did advertise he would be at Survivor Series too, so I guess that's a way to give him a quick win.

They also advertised that Taker will be at Survivor Series.

No way he isn't fighting a Wyatt member in some way at Survivor Series.

A funeral implies some respect, I could get behind the idea of the Wyatts carrying him away and replacing him as the fear of the WWE, but they beat him up after a night of telling us Survivor Series is all about Takers 25th anniversary.

He's on a retirement tour an the Wyatts are up next match.

Classic 5 on 5 Survivor Series match

Taker

Daniel Bryan

a safer way for Bryan to return, and makes storyline sense too as everyone has history with each other

Solid show. Del Rio is back, the Zeb pairing could be a lot of fun, and scoring a clean win on Cena is HUGE. Would've liked a longer match here (just cut out one of the 3 promos for the main event) because they've been telling a story with these open challenges. I'd rather see someone REALLY take Cena to the limit and then beat him. Still a minor complaint cause I'm a big ADR fan. Glad he's back. Honestly didn't think it would happen.

All the middle matches were good even if they weren't memorable. Rollins finally got a clean win. I'm sure many will grumble about Bray, but Roman needed to go over here, and at least the Wyatts have a direction now.

But on to the main event: by far the best of these 3 Taker-Lesnar matches. Lesnar went over and this feud got the knock-down drag-out brawl it deserved.

Genius almost really for Lesnar to break out the low blow calling back to the wacky Summerslam finish. Now I doubt they booked the Summerslam finish with the Hell in a Cell finish already in mind, but damn if they didn't save face here.

Awesome match.

The fact that Lesnar won with the low blow kinda made Taker losing again, not so bad. I've been appalled by Taker's booking since The Streak ended and although their SummerFest match was very, very good, the ending was atrocious and I feel more detrimental to Taker's career than the Streak ending.
This ending though... not so bad.

(It does make me laugh the way the announcers made such a fuss about the Tombstone on the wooden boards - naw man, it's a Tombstone on his knees!)

In response to Reply # 0

We already know the benefit of giving wrestlers consistent time off. There obviously will never be an official "off-season", but it's certainly possible to give wrestler A these two months off, wrestler B these two, etc. So from the wrestler's perspective, thinking about their health, their sanity, and saving them from getting burnt out, this really is a no brainer.

Now, considering C.R.E.A.M. and all that, ADR's return last night proves that it's beneficial from a business standpoint as well. What was ADR doing before he left? Does anybody even remember? What would he have done for the past year or so that he was gone? Continued to get more and more stale, rehashing the same feuds, fighting Sheamus, Randy Orton, etc for the million times each. Instead, he's gone for a year, comes back refreshed and without a million appearances over the last 12 months, and he's immediately 10x more interesting than when he left. ADR is worth more money from now until WM32 than he was the entire time he was gone.
