"List your all-time Starting 5 for each NBA Franchise"

You can list it for one squad, five, or all 30 if you are bored at work.

I figure you can start two centers if you want (Hakeem and Moses Malone, Shaq and Kareem) or two PGs, or whatever...but try to keep it realistic and not have like five PGs start.

Jul 27th 2015
185
Yes, because Bob Cousy was never known for pushing the pace
Jul 27th 2015
186
Are either faster or better passers than Rondo? Nope.
Jul 27th 2015
188
Cousy certainly was and White was called upon to score, which he did
Jul 27th 2015
192
I didn't ask you about White scoring.

So Rondo IS faster and a better passer. Okay thanks for playing.
Jul 27th 2015
199
A better passer? No. Faster? Yes. KG is faster than Russell, too. So?
Jul 27th 2015
200
Well he is a better passer. But that point is moot.
Jul 28th 2015
203
Way to create a strawman. I am talking ALPHAs and HOF'ers

Sounds personal. Show me on the doll where Rondo touched you.

I like Rondo more than most folks, but just answer this:
Jul 28th 2015
206
No, he doesn't deserve that honor yet.
Jul 28th 2015

No, I actually kinda like him. What's personal is your passing ...

Guards: Wilkens and Maravich in a sick combo backcourt to start. Joe Johnson and Steve Smith off the bench (shout to Mookie!)

Forwards: Nique and Bob Pettit, obviously. Cliff Hagan and Dan Roundfield off the bench. Lovelette is a fine choice but I actually saw Dan Roundfield so ...

Centers: Deke and Moses.

If I had to a third team it would be Blaylock, Lou Hudson, John Drew, Lovelette and either Horford or Kevin Willis.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Cousy
Hondo
Bird
McHale
Russell

JoJo White
Sam Jones
Pierce
Cowens
Parish

But I mean no KC Jones or DJ there and there are a lot of other potential arguables, too, going way back or even from the big 3. Best franchise ever, period.

one of my replies or posts again.

My rationale, if I have an all time team of Russell, McHale, Bird and Pierce. Then you need somebody to get them the ball and push the pace. Who's better to do that Rondo. Flying up and down the court with Bill. Getting rebounds. And not looking to score. And killing other pgs on back cuts.

By Dick Diver.

I'll know where to find you.

And you know there is film of Cousy playing right?

And I can watch him play and know he's not a better passer than Rondo with his one hand dribbles looking down at the ball and elementary behind the backs that look straight out of a 8 yr olds hoops mixtape.

So, Nope.

And I love the NYC Point God, but cats evolved.

By that reasoning someone could make some wack argument that Corey Maggette was better than Elgin Baylor. Come on. Even if not Cousy or White, DJ>Rondo and most of us saw him. Whatever, man, I'll let you do your little thing.

Does being more athletic make him ipso facto better?

Cousy won six NBA titles. He was first-team All-NBA TEN times.

And way to skirt the DJ argument. Sorry if I don't think a guy who can barely sign a fucking contract at age 29 is better than a long list of hall of famers.

Because you refuse to agree on even the obvious.

And I told you what traits & skills led me to picking Rondo. But once again, pressed Charlie is into shifting the argument about shit nobody is talking about (Cousy's titles or DJ).

And what exactly would make DJ a better fit to point guard this team besides the fact the alternative you have in this scenario is Rajon Rondo and presented by me of course, to where I'm pretty confident you'd argue Dana Barros if I let this back and forth go on for about 20 replies?

Do you honestly believe he is the BEST point guard to ever play for the Boston Celtics?

Yes or no.

I get that you like the guy, I get the Kentucky thing... And he was a great passer, defender, and floor general.

I guess I can see the argument if you're picking him because the other 4 slots can all score - all he has to do is defend and distribute - but personally I think he's a little out of his depth among hall of famers and all-time greats.

Then again, as the original title says, it's "your all-time starting 5," emphasis on "your," so there's that.

There are a few who've had better careers than him (not limiting solely to their Celtics careers) but Cousy, Jones, and Tiny come to mind first.

And yep, I was basing it off of the other guys on the team and Rondo facilitating, defending, and pushing the ball.

homer opinions as legitimate ones.

I dig Rondo, he is an oddball personality and has a funky style of play. I hope he can bounce back (though I have some doubts). But when we start talking about him in this context, wow, that's just insane.

Gordon is by far the best. The next best two are probably Morris Peterson and Desmond Mason. Yep, it's that bad.

New Orleans
1 CP3
2 EJ
3 Mash
4 Anthony Davis
5 Tyson Chandler

I put Chandler over Magloire because the Hornets were more successful with Chandler, and Chandler's 3 seasons match or exceed Magloire's prime as a Hornet. Ryan Anderson, for me, would replace Mash with one more good season.

Charlotte
1 Baron Davis
2 Dell Curry
3 Glen Rice
4 LJ
5 Zo

A little positional confusion with Rice and LJ creates a small lineup, but there aren't any 4s that really stand out for me that would push LJ to the 3 and force Rice out. Murda Mase is a consideration for the 4 and putting LJ at 3, but he only played three seasons as a Hornet despite being a high impact guy. And IMO Eddie Jones is the only remote competition for Dell Curry's 2 spot. But he has the same deal as Mase - short term as a Hornet (2 seasons).

Let the record also show that a Charlotte team headlined by Mase and Eddie Jones was a 4 seed in 2000. Paul Silas was a hell of a coach.

Why not put West at the 4 and Anthony Davis at the 5? West was better than Chandler or Magliore, and he played 8 seasons in New Orleans.

LJ played the 4 during his time in Charlotte. He was short for the position, but incredibly strong and explosive. He had no problems playing the PF spot.

I think Glen Rice should be Charlotte's SF, unless you want to give it to Gerald Wallace just for being there 7 years instead of 3.

I was a big fan of Anthony Mason - a really talented guy who could do a lot of different things - but he's got nothing on a healthy Larry Johnson, who was an absolute beast in Charlotte.

>And IMO Eddie Jones is the only remote competition for

Did you rule out Richardson because he was only there 2 years? My rule was to ignore 1-year players, but I figure 2 years is enough if they were good enough (e.g., Mashburn only played 2 years in New Orleans).

Curry is the iconic Charlotte SG, but he wasn't the best player. I've got J-Rich at the 2, followed by Eddie Jones, then Curry. Actually, now that I think about it, skill-wise I'd probably put Kendall Gill over Curry too.

He was indeed.

I would put West in there, no doubt. He was my 2nd favorite after CP3. Definitely 4 West and 5 Davis with Chandler out in that case.

You could certainly put Kendall Gill or Eddie Jones above Curry, especially since Curry was more of a sixth man/3-point specialist. I just favored the longer tenure and the icon status. Richardson was a Bobcat, not a Hornet...I had to look that one up.

I really hated him as an announcer. I thought he was really terrible. Plus he was a Cav so he was already in the red with me.

Well I was still a student at the time and he was calling a Tech game. During a TV timeout (very quiet, cuz Tech) i felt possessed to yell "YOU SUCK DAUGHERTY!!" at the top of my lungs. Like 4 sections of fans AND Mike Gminski (his broadcast partner) all started cracking up.

Probably my favorite GT sports memory that didnt involve something between the lines

I mean this is extremely pathetic. They don't have a single player in the HOF. Other than LeBron (and maybe Irving if he holds up) they won't have one either.

I had have a small lineup on the second team and put TYRONE HILL on there. What other choices are there? Cliff Robinson? Mike Mitchell? There are guys like Z and Chones but these are not *all-time* anything. I guess maybe Terrell Brandon would work if they didn't already have two real good point guards, same for Andre Miller but again if he is on your "all-time" squad and you're not the Utes? That's a bad look

Nash, Harper, Finley, Aguirre, Dirk

Kidd, Blackman, Jamal Mashburn, Sam Perkins, Tarpley

Harper and Blackman could switch places, but I think a tweaked version of the three-guard lineup with the defensive-minded Harper in for Van Exel works. I kept that big three that never quite won together. I was tempted to put Jim Jackson on the second team the same way but no way should he be there over the five guards listed. They haven't had a lot of good big men. You could Chandler on over Tarpley, but then who would supply the booger sugar?

The weird thing about the Mavs is that 3 of their 4 best players were all primarily small forwards: Aguirre, Finley, and Mashburn (Dirk is the 4th).

I'd want all three of those guys to start. Finley played some 2-guard, so I put him there. It's a tossup whether you put Mash or Aguirre at the 4 - Mashburn was bigger, but Aguirre rebounded better, so I gave him the nod.

Hard to leave Jackson off the 1st team but there's just no room.

PG- Nash
SG- Finley
SF- Mashburn
PF- Aguirre
C- Nowitzki

Bench
PG- Kidd, Harper
SG- Blackman, Terry
SF- Jackson (really more of a SG, but the SFs are all on the 1st team)
PF- Tarpley, Perkins
C- Chandler

Not really many big guys of note.

The first three spots are obvious:

PG - Isiah Thomas
SG - Jerry Stackhouse (I like Dumars, but come on)
SF - Grant Hill

I'm torn over Rodman, Rasheed Wallace, and Ben Wallace for the other two spots.

Given spots 1-3, you don't really need much more scoring, and Rodman and Ben Wallace would be a monstrous rebounding and defending combo...

But it's always nice to have a post scorer and I do love Sheed.

It hurts me to leave out Rodman, but pairing him with Sheed leaves the team a little too small, so I guess I'd have to go with Sheed and Ben.

PF - Rasheed Wallace
C - Ben Wallace

Disclaimer: Lanier and Bing were before my time.

In response to Reply # 83

>Behind Dumars, Bing, and Rip

I think Stackhouse at his best was a better player than Dumars and Rip. He was less efficient, but there wasn't really anyone else on those Pistons teams besides Stack and Hill. He averaged 30 PPG and was an MVP candidate in 2001.

I could see giving Dumars the nod for his superior defense (while also being a great offensive player), but Stack was a better scorer.

I like Rip - he was a consistent and efficient player, but I don't see putting him above Stackhouse.

For Detroit SGs, I've got:
1) Stackhouse
2) Dumars
3) Hamilton

I have no knock on Bing, he was just before my time.

They were good enough to get out of the 1st round in 99 and he was terrible against the hawks

And the 2002 celtics were nothing special either

An ECF run would make.me see him differently

I agree with CGonz that I'd have Dave Bing, Joe Dumars AND Rip ahead of Stack. How could one not put rip ahead of him when the two players were traded for each other, instantly improving the team? Bing was the face of their franchise for years (B-b-b-bennie and the Jets) and Dumars was their defensive stopper as well as a valuable offensive contributor during the Bad Boys years. Players from the NBA's golden age respect the hell out of Dumars. Nobody goes out of their way to tell you how hard Stackhouse was to play against.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

His teammates at the start of the Goin To Work era were extremely offensively challenged

Uncle Cliffy and Big Nasty were the next biggest scoring threats

Still good enough to have beaten the 02 Celtics tho, and thats a black mark.

Now im waffling lol

That kind of mix of inefficiency and lack of volume is hard to match in his era or anywhere close to it. He had one "real big" scoring season and the rest of his career was high teens/low 20s averages on shitty shooting. He went to two all-star games. His career is pretty forgettable.

They may have meekly bowed out in the 2nd round but Detroit Stack was the best Stack, and he made it work with Michael Curry and early Ben Wallace in the starting lineup.

The Rip trade was as much about age as anything else imo. It worked out really well but the Pistons upgraded big time at the point that offseason too.

However, feel free to roast him for 99. He played like shit .

Stackhouse had a stretch of memorable seasons but overall I am just not feeling his career that much. And here the Pistons have a lot of good shooting guards, the three we both had ahead of him plus Yardley. I never saw him play but he was one of the game's first big stars. Of course on the wing they had good players like Adrian Dantley and Mark Aguirre who I think haven't even been mentioned yet.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Bench: (not exactly a second team because fuck if I am putting Vern Fleming on here over DOCTOR DUNK!).
Paul George
Chuck Person
Mel Daniels
Jermaine O'Neal
Darnell Hillman

I guess Vern Fleming and Detlef Schrempf would be there, too. Maybe Schrempf over Person, I don't know, I am caring less by the second here.

I guess, I mean honestly I am slightly embarrassed to even be looking at their second team.

Zo's defense >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Shaq's. Shaq did bring them that first title, but when I think of Shaq, I think Lakers, then Orlando, then Heat. Zo just pops up in my head first as the Heat's Center.

Because I agree with you on Wiggins eventually taking that position in a few years (though Tom Gugliotta should have a spot, first all star in team history.)

Cassell was only on the team for two seasons, but his first season was probably the best single season by a Wolves PG ever, so it's tough to argue with that. Also thought about putting Love and KG both on there as bigs, but decided to go with an actual center instead (and I legitimately couldn't think of a better true center in franchise history than Nesterovic, unless Al Jefferson counts.)

*Though that '94 dunk contest is still a top 5 moment in Wolves history, so even that's understandable.

ESPECIALLY pre-KG, he was basically the only reason I would even watch them play.

Cassell lead them further than anyone else did, since KG was there the whole time and never got that far. He definitely made a difference for those years.

i wanted to find a spot for Tom Chambers or Jack Sikma, but couldn't do it.

2 dudes who were close to making the cut - Lenny Wilkens (only 4 seasons but he was 19/9/5) and Dale Ellis (was averaging 25 or 26 a game in his first 4 year run in Seattle).

They're not knocking anyone off that list, though.

Backcourt is a little undersized because if Iverson but Cheeks in the Eric Snow role seems very feasible. Barkley was short but he played huge. Erving was a very good rebounder and defender at the three.

* I like Kidd over Nash as an all time NBA PG, but as a "better Sun" I gotta go Nash. Really torn leaving KJ off too.

Fuck it, I am going small here. ONCE YOU POP, YOU CAN'T STOP. Listed in order (first team and then second):

G Nash, KJ, Steph, Westphal (Kidd can't be on every damn team he played for lol).
F Barkley, Connie Hawkins, Charlie Scott, Walter Davis (shout out to Shawn Marion).
C Amare, Tom Chambers (shout out to Alvan Adams).

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

How badly do I want to boot someone for SABONIS here. Honestly Steve Smith and Pippen would be upgrade over the two point guards. This team has a lot of great players but really isn't conducive to this exercise. Jerome Kersey vs Calvin Natt is a big toss-up.

Oscar and Tiny in an ILL combo backcourt for sure. I'll go Jack Twyman at the 3 and Jerry Lucas at the four and Maurice Stokes at the five.

Second team I'd go big with Richmond, Peja, CWebb, Sam Lacey and Vlade. Shout out to Rush Street Reggie Theus, Mike Bibby n them.

The second team would basically be their recent good team (Deron, AK47, Booze, Okur) with like Jeff Malone or Hornacek or Darrell Griffith or some other resolution of an irrelevant toss-up. Thank God these guys had Stockton and Malone lol.

Walt Bellamy and Earl Monroe were strongly considered.

Basically, Unseld and Hayes are unimpeachable. After that, I think there is a lot of room for discussion.

In response to Reply # 162

I dock him significantly for being better remembered on another team. Like you said, the franchise is made up of a lot of guys who had good short runs with the team but are best remembered elsewhere. His tenure with the Bullets is already fewer games than Wall's to date. If you are using "Who was the most talented player", then he's certainly going to get the nod. In making my list, I tried to use guys that I would think of as Bullets/Wizards, rather than necessarily the best players that played for the franchise.

But Wall already has more assists than any guard in franchise history. He's made as many All-Star Games as any PG except Don Ohl. He's won a couple of playoff series. I'm certainly crediting him for some expected future returns, but I think he's defensible within the criteria.

In response to Reply # 164

Not for nothing but Holzman neutered him. The Knicks were better off for having him for sure but I think the game as a whole would have been better off had he stayed in Baltimore. And his tenure there left an indelible mark, one that remains to be seen from Wall and wasn't seen from Arenas, who was very, very good there and won some games.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

I want to put Gus Williams there but his tenure was short there. Same thing with Bob Dandridge. Same deal with Moses Malone and Walt Bellamy. Ditto for Mitch Richmond even. I tried to go with guys who played four seasons (or parts thereof) or more. It was not super easy. Shout out to Antawn Jamison.

Going by the numbers he seems better. Sikma was pretty dope though. Also if do what I could to bump Detlef. Dude just made me mad by the end of his run in Seattle. I'd roll with McKey out of spite.

Nah but dude was pretty ill.

Haywood was the biggest "wow" factor star of the three, Sikma was the steadiest, Rule was kind of between the two. Haywood was also not a center, so there's that, though obviously we are playing guys out of position. The other two guys were true fives.

I just knew he was a big. Sikma was dope in Seattle, and a true Center. Guy was among the league leaders in FT% as a C too, which is pretty useful. I remember yelling for him and Gus Williams, and calling Kareem a baby when i was just a pup.
