http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/13178518/2015-nba-free-agency-new-orleans-pelicans-not-pausing-make-anthony-davis-league-richest

The New Orleans Pelicans and Anthony Davis, on the first day possible, have agreed to terms on a mammoth contract extension that should become the league's richest when it goes into effect, according to league sources.

Sources told ESPN.com that the Pelicans and Davis have agreed to a five-year extension estimated at nearly $145 million that will kick in starting with the 2016-17 season and run through Davis' 28th birthday.

First-round picks from the 2012 NBA draft like Davis are eligible to negotiate contract extensions now through Oct. 31. But like any free-agent deal around the league, they can't be formally signed until July 9, when a leaguewide moratorium on roster business is lifted.

Davis tweeted he had agreed to the deal shortly after the window for negotiations opened after midnight ET.

Team officials, including general manager Dell Demps and new Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry, were in Los Angeles at the first allowable minute Tuesday night to formally make the pitch to Davis and agent Thad Foucher that ESPN.com first reported in May. ‎

The exact figures of the extension will depend on how much the NBA salary cap actually rises in 2016, but sources told ESPN.com the Pelicans presented Davis with the biggest offer they moment were allowed to.

The five-year deal, which includes a provision that will allow Davis to return to free agency after Year 4, will make the 22-year-old New Orleans' designated player.

In April, in his first trip to the postseason as a pro, Davis joined Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain and Bob McAdoo as the only players in league history ‎to average at least 30 points and 10 rebounds in their first four NBA playoff games.

New Orleans suffered a four-game sweep in the first round at the hands of the eventual champion Golden State Warriors but surprised many pundits by beating the defending champion San Antonio Spurs on the final day of the regular season to clinch a playoff berth ahead of the Oklahoma City Thunder with a 45-37 record.

Because Davis was elected by the fans to start in last February's All-Star Game, and since he also earned All-NBA first-team honors, New Orleans will have the ability to include a provision in the deal that entitles Davis to start his max deal at 30 percent of the league's salary cap as opposed to 25 percent, provided he is an All-Star starter or earns All-NBA honors next season as well.‎

New Orleans, like all NBA teams, has the right to bestow designated player status on only one player.

If Davis indeed goes the five-year route and becomes a designated player, he'd fill that slot for the Pelicans, who would not be allowed to designate another player as long as Davis was on their roster and his extension is still in effect, but would be allowed to trade for another team's designated player.

''I just think he's one of those special players that comes along once every 25 or 30 years,'' Gentry said of Davis at his introductory news conference, where he spoke of the up-tempo offense that convinced New Orleans to target Gentry as their top candidate to replace Monty Williams.

''He's got a chance to be Tim Duncan. He's got a chance to be Kevin Garnett. He's got a chance to be one of those special players and I think when you have a foundation of a great player like that, then I think you got something special.''

During the 2014-15 regular season, Davis led the league in blocks per game (2.94) while ranking fourth in scoring (24.4 ppg) seventh in field-goal percentage (.535) and eighth in rebounding (10.2 rpg). His Player Efficiency Rating of 30.8, was good for 11th all-time in terms of single-season PER.

If George returns to form they'd be a great offensive 1-2 punch.

I think replacing West should be a huge concern though.

If they had the money, Milsap would be perfect. I'm glad they don't lol

a slight overpay in yr 1, but with the cap rise, the equivalent of 10m in yr 2, 8m in yr 3, and even less in yrs 4/5.

excellent 2 way player, only 23 yrs old, and way way better than most ppl realize. if milwaukee gets some legit rim protection they might be at the big boy table as early as next season.

Dudley and Middleton can't be your only guys who can shoot.

Jabari will help there eventually but probably not over the next 2-3 seasons.

BK shot pretty decent from 3 and that was the obvious change from him to MCW. Unless kidd teaches him how to shoot 3's and even then, it'll probably be on the Jabari trajectory.

In response to Reply # 0

http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/13179541/damian-lillard-portland-trail-blazers-nearing-max-extension

The Portland Trail Blazers and Damian Lillard are nearing agreement on a maximum five-year contract extension that is expected to top $120 million in value, according to league sources.

Sources said the Blazers and the All-Star point guard soon will finalize a five-year extension that will kick in starting with the 2016-17 season.

First-round picks from the 2012 NBA draft such as Lillard are eligible to negotiate contract extensions now through Oct. 31. But like any free-agent deal throughout the league, they can't be formally signed until July 9, when a leaguewide moratorium on player business is lifted.

The exact figures of the extension will depend on how much the NBA salary cap actually rises in 2016, but sources said the Blazers are prepared to pay Lillard, 24, the maximum amount they're allowed to and make him their designated player.

If we're paying the guy that much I guess he has to start next season.

and that's not a lot of money btw. once the cap rises it's basically the equivalent of a veteran minimum contract (2-3m)

As I said, I like Dunny and recognize that he brings a lot to the team. His postseason performance last year was a bit lackluster but I see why the Bulls would want to keep him.

I'm just anxious to see McDermott start producing because we gave up a lot to get him. Dougie & Dunny have similar roles, but hopefully Hoiberg will be able to balance their minutes.

This cap rising thing is throwing me off. Never been too good with mathematics but upon further review that sounds like a fair price.

^^^I think SF is where we need the biggest upgrade. Dunny is great but he's 35 and expecting him to carry a HUGE load is not ideal. That's why I didn't mind Pau because Taj is there for relief.

My hope is that Niko, Dougie and Snell all improve similar to Jimmy over his first 3 seasons (maybe not to allstar level but definitely consistent rotation players/starters).

Lakers didn't make strong impression in Aldridge meeting, sources say. Spurs can close on him. LMA expected to make decision fairly soon.

Anyone who's signing him for a year is doing so to roll the dice. So like, 8-9 mil max for that one year. The Knicks are kinda dumb though.

besides, if it takes 13 million to get rondo to come to (lets say utah(just throwing a team out there)) and they have the cap space, it really won't affect the team one way or another if its just a 1 year deal.

AFter all the big names go, there are gonna be teams left out in the cold that are gonna want to do something.

I guess they would make Kevin Love guard the SF
but LeBron and Kyrie both on the floor, unless they come up w/something new where LeBron actually plays SF? Kyrie would be the off guard

I still don't think they have quite figured out a LeBron/Kyrie on the same floor line up yet

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

$55M in 15-16 for love/trist/andy/moz.

96 PF/C minutes per game (none of them can play SF)

and bron needs some PF minutes too.

i don't get it. i guess they'll make it work tho.

I didn't watch that much Cleveland regular season, I'd feel better at dumping close to $200 million in power forwards if one of them could possibly patrol the paint as a center at least part of the time, and I sure know Love ain't stopping anyone in the lane.

by concentrating so much into 2 positions (again, bron needs PF minutes too) now you're looking at all of your SG minutes, all of your backup PG minutes (or PG minutes period if kyrie goes out), all of your backup wing minutes going to sub-replacement level, vet-min ring chaser types.

it's obviously a first world problem, they're a great team either way, but i'd have kept one of thompson/love, S+T'ed the other for a wing upgrade, and played lebron 20 mpg @ PF.

They can solve that by playing Bron out front more and/or if Andy gets hurt. They also have these assets going forward, if it becomes untenable then they peace Love for a package of guards/wings.

This is about Kris Middleton getting $70 million from the Bucks. Lacob will end up kicking in whatever it takes. Dray is the second most popular player on the team right today. He's not going anywhere.

and if so probably be bledsoe involved.

Chandler's signing peaked Aldridge's interest in the Suns and may have improved the chances of a team that was otherwise seen as a darkhorse to land him

As one source sagely explains: Suns certainly have player to appeal to PORT in sign-and-trade if LaMarcus Aldridge chooses PHX: Eric Bledsoe

Seems he and Kobe didn't really get along.

I love Kobe. I do. But it's time to move on after this contract.

EDIT: I do think people wanted to play with him, but now...not so much. He's a broken down player on a huge contract. Inevitably, it's his time. Maybe he shouldn't have been in the meeting. Maybe it doesn't matter because this team is garbage right now. But...sucks to hear they focused on off the court opportunities, although what else were they supposed to say?

I agree though - 2nd tier FAs on cap friendly deals would be a good start. Not much we can do until after next year, when Kobe comes off the books and then the following year we'll have a draft pick again (unless we get lucky in the lottery...I just dont think they'll be bottom 3 this season but who knows)

You gotta try obviously and we will get meetings because the franchise still holds clout...but in terms of actual basketball and the chance to win, we don't hold a candle to the other teams meeting with established stars (we won 21 games last year, cmon lol). If Russell and Randle pan out along with being able to acquire some 2A sensible deals around them, that's when we really have an advantage with location, franchise, etc.

People overlook the Byron Scott factor amongst our other issues for perspective free agents.

Not enough focus on the basketball portion isn't just a Kobe issue...that's a coaching thing too. Scott is who would have to convince any free agent of how they fit into the grand scheme of things b-ball wise

I will take Houston's sure-thing future over the Lakers....Plus Little Boy Buss is running things in La La Land....

But this is all moot....I still think LMA is going to SA....Houston would make more sense for him though....

They need just one more piece and they will win a title...Houston's biggest problems r Harden does too much and Kevin Mac has to prove he can make adjustments.....

If they get LMA EVERYONE needs to take notice...

This is for sure...If Houston can find a trading partner for Ariza (that's the rumor) and a little move here and there they can land LMA....

If I'm dude, surprisingly, Houston looks like the better destination than SA.....Yeah, SA got rings and Pop...But LMA is going to be playing for 5-6 more years....Timmy, Frenchie, and Manu will be long retired by then...

Harden, Howard >>>> Kawhi and D Green.....

The Rockets r attempting to do the same thing the Spurs r....Ship a few players around to create cap space to sign LMA....Ariza is the main contract and u better believe teams will want dude after the way he played in the playoffs....It can def. be done...

Also, don't rule out a S&T.

point guard Mike Conley, who will be a free agent after the 2015-16 season, has been uninterested in signing an extension, reports ESPN's Marc Stein.

According to Stein, Memphis has "tried to engage" Conley in extension talks multiple times,
the point guard's now-bargain of a five-year, $40 million contract he signed in 2010 makes testing the market – with the NBA's salary cap expected to jump around $30 million in 2016 – a no-brainer.

At Conley's current base salary of $9,388,426, an extension signed after June 30 can start at 107.5% of that number and last three years maximum, both far smaller numbers than he could command in free agency. If Conley waits, he'll be 28 years old when he hits the market. Were he to re-sign for three years, he'd next hit free agency at age 31, a stage of his career with theoretically less leverage to command a lucrative long-term contract.

Another factor possibly preempting Conley's eventual decision is the pending free agency of Grizzlies center Marc Gasol, who will be unrestricted this off-season. Stein reports Memphis is "jittery" about the situation despite Gasol's deep roots within the city, where he played high school ball as a teenager while older brother Pau starred for the Grizzlies. It would make little sense for Conley to commit to anything long-term until his star teammate makes his intentions known.

That's pretty much the length of two games. Assuming Monta Ellis bounces and the current train wreck of the point guard position, what guards can Dallas snag?

Dude must truly hate Chris Paul something terrible because Dallas as constructed aren't better than the Clippers and the Clippers can give him more money.

He got mad at Kobe saying he should be Tyson Chandler, and now in Houston that's pretty much what he is. Defense, rebounds, blocks, and putbacks.

Better situation, but like...Dwight's NOT a 1a guy.

He's not an a1 guy after the injuries....But he was for the better part of his career, especially when he took a team filled with role players to a Finals...

And let's be real...Even on his robot post move making worst he does more on offense than Tyson....

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

So...

5/110 for Love
5/80 for TT
4/40 for Shump
5/90 for Kyrie
3/30 for Andy V (2 years left)

And they still have to pay Bron.

Damn.

Like $75 mil next season JUST on those 5. NOT Lebron.

talk about the Cavs salary cap. Penn ran some numbers and with their salary number hitting 110M, the Cavs would have to pay an additional 50+M luxury tax fee.

When the cap goes up next year and the year after it won't be an issue, but losing the title next year isn't going to look good for Cavs and LeBron.

Shump is a priority because of his defensive tenacity but we need to find some quality players on a discount.

If JR wants $10 mill then sign and trade his ass somewhere.

I expect more for the money we're spending and we will regret passing on RJ Hunter at some point.

Everyone knew Lacob and Guber were going to back up the Brinks truck for him. And everyone knew that almost all of the cap room that the eventual David Lee salary dump was going directly into Dray's pockets. Wonder how the contact is structured, so if we still have some space to sign a second tier ring-chasing vet on the cheap. Hopefully re-sign Barbosa too.
