but yea he seems more like a Austin guy than an LA guy at this point. Who knows that could change. The problem with UCLA is theyre also limited to what they can or do offer coaches. Even though Texas is a public uni--as weve seen they can break the bank

Austin is a better city at this point

Fewer entitled dirtbag fans and alum

Predominant Islamic Asiatic Football coach

It's a better job than UCLA by quite a bit IMO

Cool. UCLAs last football head coach was black.
>
>It's a better job than UCLA by quite a bit IMO
By what metric?

UCLA has a better history (old and recent).
the Pac 12 is a better overall conference
despite underachieving UCLA was better than Texas this past season and most recent seasons. UCLA has produced more and better pros both old and recent.

So again whats it come down to? My guess is location and money.
I can definitely see how Austin is a better city for Shaka and his family. I might even agree for my own family if I didnt have people in LA. Its a relatively big city with a small town feel. Much easir transition than Westwood.

Im sure Shaka will get more than the seven-year, $18.2-million Alford got by quite a bit.

They must have given him fuck you money. A guy who can have his pick... picks a school with very little tradition of real basketball success.

Hey, great for Texas, and if he got paid, great for him.

Edit: or he could be a guy who didnt make the move for legacy reasons, maybe he just went for family and area and things like this. Which is obviously completely understandable for pretty much any non-coach. From everything I've heard, it's a great place to be. Just not really the obvious place if you want to succeed... but who knows, maybe he'll be the guy to topple Self for once, which would certainly be good for legacy.

like the SI article on Nick Saban written a few years ago, coaches coach. they're either on a field/in a gym, in their office, on the road recruiting, or sleeping.

the only time I see it making an impact is if extended family are already established in the area.

You think he'd rather be a work a holic in la or Austin withthst situation?
Austin is a college town that's grown into a semi city.
La is one the complete opposite coast from where he is currently and is a mega city.

moving to Austin instead of L.A. because it's a quicker commute.

Texas has a shit-ton more money than UCLA is probably the most likely reason.

that's about it as far as legitimate location reasons go, I'll assume.

his kid will go to a nice private school and his wife will make new friends, both of which I'm sure could be found somewhere in California.

maybe Smart loves going to Alamo Drafthouse and sipping single origin coffee, while enjoying the comparably awful traffic of a city that's outgrown its infrastructure...but I doubt it.

And expect to stay married. At least in Austin he'll be somewhere within 30 minutes of home.
I don't shit on the amenities that LA has to offer for anyone with money. But if you're trying to raise a family and you're gonna be gone for long portions of time and work long hours, don't drop your wife off in LA or NYC.

Texas is still not remotely as good a basketball job as UCLA. But Smart must prefer the fit and is willing to risk going to a school with no real history of basketball success.

Obviously Kentucky, Duke, Carolina and Kansas are the top tier, but one would have to think UCLA was the next step down. Texas has to be in the third tier, right? Money talks.

More try solid 20 year run of mainly good to great play, located in a talent rich state, with a competent AD and the finances it skimp.

Texas is Florida without the trophies when it comes tout hoops. Second fiddle to football, consistently good, draws major talent.

If Wichita State just made Gregg Marshall a Top 10 paid coach in America, I think UCLA could scrape up the funds to make the right guy a Top 5 or 6 paid coach if they wanted to.

And have been to only four Elite Eights in the modern era.

Which does put them in, say, the top forty programs of the modern era, probably.

But #17 in wins for a team that started playing basketball very early in history doesn't mean they are top-tier. BYU has more wins.

Undefeated Kentucky is on the brink of one of the greatest seasons in college-basketball history—but the Wildcats aren’t even the most valuable team in their own state, according to an annual study.

Louisville, which lost to Michigan State in the Elite Eight, remains the most valuable men’s basketball program in the country, worth $367.4 million—more than $50 million more than second-place Arizona—according to a valuation by Ryan Brewer, an assistant professor of finance at Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus.

To calculate what a college team would be worth on the open market, if it could be bought and sold like a pro team, Brewer analyzed each major program’s revenues and expenses and made cash-flow adjustments, risk assessments and growth projections for each.

Louisville benefits from a lucrative home arena, the KFC Yum! Center, and college basketball’s most obsessed market. Louisville has had the country’s highest TV ratings among metered markets in college-basketball programming for at least the last dozen years, according to ESPN data. Brewer noted, however, that the gap between first and second is shrinking.

Overall, the value of major conference teams has dramatically spiked in the past three years, with Louisville’s value increasing more than 73% from $211.5 million in 2012. Kentucky, which places sixth nationally at $213.3 million, has nearly tripled its value in three years from $73.7 million and shot up from 16th overall.

As for the other teams in this weekend’s Final Four, Wisconsin ranks fifth at $221.7 million, Duke is ninth ($181.7 million) and Michigan State is 11th ($121.8 million).

The Badgers and Spartans are among six Big Ten Conference schools worth more than $100 million—the most of any conference. (The others: Ohio State, Indiana, Maryland and Purdue.) Next-best is the Atlantic Coast Conference, which has four schools topping $100 million. No other conference has more than one team worth more than nine figures.

1. He has the youngest team in the Big 12 by a lot. He's starting four underclassmen and a senior transfer-- and the senior doesn't fit Smart's regular style of play at all, honestly.

2. He's going to return seven underclassmen next year-- six four-stars and a five-star. He'll be bringing in four more four-stars next year, including the point guard he probably has needed here. They move and shoot the ball terribly on offense right now, so added maturity and guard talent will help tremendously.

3. They have a Top 25 defense nationally-- even at 10-18! They just cannot shoot the ball AT ALL right now. When you can't shoot jumpers, can't shoot free throws, can't move the ball, and turn the ball over a lot, your offense isn't going to do what it needs to do in the Big 12. They've come really close to winning a number of games in conference-- they just can't close without the offense. I like their offense to improve with age.

4. A lot of coaches didn't do well in their first two seasons... and Smart, as I mentioned above, came to a school with NO history of real basketball success and is being asked to win right away in the toughest conference top to bottom in college basketball with a crew of underclassmen. I'm not saying he should be immune to criticism, but people should consider the context-- his roster, his conference, his school.

They might have been an ok team had they just had a Point Guard.

Also, Tevin Mack was their best offensive player, but Shaka basically had to kick him off the team because he became a cancer in the locker room.

They'll be fine. Just super super young and taking their time to get Shaka the guys he wants.

up and coming coach, a decade of experience in the SEC, and he never could get bama better than mediocre. they gave him plenty of time, too -- one tourney bid in six years.

and no one was ready for it. As teams saw more of it they adjusted over the years.

Grant also had a squad that beat Duke in the tourney. VCU won the CAA every year he was there.

I think that FF team had the perfect blend of talent. They were tall, they all shot 3's at a decent clip and Rodriguez was a fucking beast at PG. A true PG.

oh, and Skeen transferred from Wake (props to Shaka on that one).

They press so infrequently. And he doesn't recruit players who are optimal Havoc athletes some of the time.

The analytics suggest, albeit from a very small sample size, this year's team is way more effective on D when they're pressing. But he still doesn't do it frequently at all. And I can't for the life of me figure out why.

- 61-58 record at Texas
- Losing record in conference play (25-35)
- 2 NCAA appearances in 4 years (0-2)
- Has not won 20 games since his inaugural season (2015-16)
- Lost 22 games in 2016-17, the first time Texas has lost 20 games since 1958-59
- Has not reached the semifinals of the Big 12 tournament in his four seasons (in that span, every other Big 12 team has played in the semifinals except for Oklahoma State)

the recruiting world?

He was probably used to having older teams which helped him achieve when the tournament came around. And if he ain't getting those 5-star cats to show up and just ball, learning and knowing the game be damned, he'll continue to have a hard time.

He probably needs to come back to the East Coast where basketball is more of the sport that these kids play. Being in Texas, a football-rich state, is not helping him too much it seems by the stats you posted.

The bigs we've had have been one dimensional (Ibeh) or so good that they're one and done (Jarrett Allen ... Mo Bamba)
Even the super skilled Jaxson Hayes this season is blocking like a pro, but can barely rebound.
Bigs typically need time to develop

Texas has basically no tradition of basketball success but they have the expectations of a big major conference school. They shat on Barnes for “underachieving,” but Barnes is almost certainly the best coach in Texas basketball history.

It’s also BEYOND strange to me that Shaka doesn’t run Havoc since coming to Texas. Like, he only presses like 5-10% of the time. A number of his best recruits also don’t seem to fit Havoc at all. Why has he abandoned what got him there?

But because he was approaching or past burn out and then also he was burning our players
They were getting worse in season every year
Players would decline in free throws as the year went on
Then would also become more hesitant to shoot as the year progressed

Like 8 games into the season
The year before that we lost our 6'7 slasher to punching a teammate
The same teammate who last season had to sit have the year and the leave due to NCAA violations
The year before that, that big man that was doing great for most of the year broke his foot and the team had to change completely

Bad breaks and bad personnel.

At this point, I don't know what he can do to win the fans back. They've all turned on him. Short of the Elite Eight, he'll be on the hot seat every single year.

He doesn't use Havoc, barely at all. He doesn't really recruit for the system that made him famous. He's at school with little to no historical basketball success-- why would he not go for it? Baffling to me.

bizarre plot twist in all of this. it'd be like Roy Williams all of a sudden running Four Corners once he got to Carolina.

I've seen people suggest it wouldn't work, and I think that's bullshit. Hell, Bob Huggins is in the same conference running Press Virginia and he's had great success the last several years-- better success than Texas is accustomed to, at least.

Maybe he was pressured into changing it up? Maybe he wanted to prove he wasn't a "gimmick guy"? Who the fuck knows-- but it was a bad decision. Guaranteed if he went to Havoc next year (if he gets a next year) they'd immediately improve.
