The build up sucked for the most part yea, but the Lesnar re-signing makes the main event unpredictable which is always a huge factor in a show being good.

The IC match will be great, Rollins vs Orton should be great, Taker Wyatt will probably be good, HHH and Sting may not be great but it doesn't have to be if there are 3 other great matches.

It won't top last year at all, but there is a lot of mystery which is rare and there will be some great matches. The end could wind up being terrible which will send everyone home with a bad taste in their mouth, but if they hadn't done so bad with the build up we'd appreciate the card we have tonight.

Expectations are so low that this Mania is gonna 'win' because of it. It probably won't be a top/iconic Mania but folks will probably look back on it fondly if the wrestling is okay. And the wrestling WILL be okay since...

This roster is ridiculous. It probably isn't 2003 special. But it is too good for this show to end up too terrible. That is unless the booking gets it all wrong. This is THE biggest fear for this show and I agree/understand. The booking has terrified everyone after the brilliance of having Brock beat the fuck out of (BTFOO?) Cena at Summerfest.

But this show isn't that hard to book in a 1-night vacuum. Fuck around and have:

- Brock win (cuz folks 'hate' Reigns sooooo much)
- Either DB win the IC or Rusev Crush beat Cena

Folks will be happy as hell.

And don't even talk about a successful Rollins cash-in of any kind for any reason. Don't even...

And this says NOTHING of Sting/HHH, which you know will over-deliver. Sting is an old man with pride and HHH is having a Taker-esque 2nd half of his career. I mean really...HHH is doing wonders for his career portfolio almost every time he shows up the last few years.

Rollins/Orton could straight up be the shit if they decide to take the show from everyone. Those two are athletic as all get out.

Throw in Taker/Wyatt...this one may not be all that bad if Taker is even remotely healthy and Wyatt wears his hossing shoes.

The women will do decent..I seriously doubt that they'll stink up the joint.

This all sounds like a Mania that is well worth watching. I'm interested.

>but how many favors did Cena earn by taking 16 suplexes?

I agree with the idea that Rusev Crush was created to take this loss on this night to Cena. It kinda makes me sad but it seems to be so true.

Still, if someone else shows up to bother Cena tomorrow night and Rusev Crush ends up going after DB or Reigns, it'll be fine. If he keeps showing up and having to deal with Cena, he'll be Koslov/Prince Albert/*insert muted monster here* status in a year or so.

Probably. Sting looks like he's been eating some sensible as hell dinners. Not shocked but it is good to see. And no T-shirt! Depending on how this goes, I'm gonna be all about Sting/Taker in Jerry World.

That was so dumb and pointless and I loved every fucking second of it.

Taiko drums ain't looking so hot now, Sting, huh?

I can't imagine the match making me as happy as those two entrances did, but if they somehow pull it off, oh man! I want Triple H to keep wrestling just so we get more and more elaborate WrestleMania entrances.

I hope that Sting got a good payday for this. We are at the point where their core audience are probably too young to give a shit about WCW and Vince probably can't let it go.

Long ass entrances, video packages, and 20+ minute matches = 2 hours. Every year, they are terrified of running out of time.

Reigns gets a beat down then pulls it out at the end.

If that happens and Rollins doesn't leave with the belt, I think I am done.

I mean nothing really sucked about this show. I'm confused. It was actually an end to end thoroughly entertaining wrestling program.

That finish!

By the end Reigns was somewhat endearing, but you still didn't want him to win. Furthermore, we've officially confirmed that no one can beat Brock Lesnar - as it should be. So how do they escape? With a chickenshit heel move, interrupting a great match and literally stealing the title while never pinning the titleholder. Man that was great.

Take out Cenawinslol and HHH winning a WCW cluster-style match and the innanet/smarks basically booked this whole show.

Brock had the squash going but took the insane hits necessary to make a loss seem possible. He was wobbling around like crazy after that post hit outside. It looked like damn near magical selling from Brock after the hit for me. He was eating Superman punches and spears like nobody's business. He looked FUCKED more than he has maybe ever. I know nobody wanted Reigns to win but they had told a story to make it reasonable save the 3 F5s.

AND THEN

Of fucking course, shady ass Rollins shows up right on time. I didn't think he would. And when he did I was still too thrown off to accept that he'd win. And then it happened. Superb booking and match layout. And they laid so much groundwork for it so it makes sense. Imagine that.

And Duckface did fine even though the crowd was hella ready to lose their shit if he won after kicking out of all of those F5s. Damn good hoss main event. Reigns did great and the crowd needs to get off of him for a bit.

Kept it muted while I watched The Walking Dead the whole time for everything else.

Ronda Rousey came out in a Vegeta over 9000 shirt and she got other nerd shit on her twitter page. I'm officially a super fan.

That main event is also on the short list of best mains since 20. Hoss paradise. Summerfest redo with Reigns getting better hope spots than Cena. Brock's near falls had me. I was terrified for reigns if he would've won after 3 f5s. That would've ruined the kid forever in his current form. He doesn't deserve that.

this was my first live wrestling event since likely 2002 or 2003, I know I was tapping out around the time Rock was the Scorpion King and I never saw Stone Cold do a WHAT! chant live. Lesnar and Orton/Baustista had me basically tap out.

Came in halfway through Rollins/Orton. That RKO IS legitimately great, I thought it was a tired Stunner retread a decade ago but he's mastered popping that thing out of nowhere. Him launching Rollins like that was something awesome I didn't expect to see and had me locked in the rest of the night.

My favorite match might have been the Divas match, though if I'm being honest. I've been crushing on AJ Lee for a while without ever hearing her speak, just gifs and photos on forums. But that girl can MOVE, and so can the other three, I was very impressed. Was having some WCW cruiserweight flashbacks.

Wyatt/Taker was alright, nothing special.

That finale was great, I've heard Reigns out of context of him as a wrestler for a while now thanks to appearances on Powerbombcast (yes I listen to a wrestling podcast without watching!) and the new Michelle Beadle podcast on Grantland. He comes off as a real nice guy, a wet blanket that just wants to do good by his ancestry. Problem is he looks like he could rip a cow in half; needs to cut his hair or something. Anyway, legitimately thought Brock got wrecked by that pole, and I can buy that no wrestling move could break him but solid steel would do the trick. I've seen the Taker/Michaels, Taker/HHH matches but none of Brock dismantling people, it truly is brutal and hilarious to watch. I started feeling sympathy for Reigns, but man that ending! Finisher on finisher on finisher...I just wish the match had been longer with Rollins involved, when I saw Brock roll out of the ring after that spear/curb stomp combo I admit I was a little bummed it was over.

If I start following wrestling again (well, watching it) instead of just reveling in people complaining about how bad it is because of this show...ugh.

With the lone exception of the Taker vs Wyatt match... Watching the Undertaker is really just sad now... It was like watching Stone Cold with a broken neck struggle to roll up Owen Hart for 20 minutes...

Probably the first Mania in ten years that I haven't fast forwarded a single second of... luckily the HOF segment hit right where I had to do the washing up.

Intercontinental match was big, I was pulling for Barrett tbh, but that headbutt-fest ending was properly brutal. It still gives me a buzz when wrestlers come up with something so obvious to create a finish that I've never seen done.

Rusev's entrance was amazing. Crowd turning from USA chants to boos as Cena's music hit was hilarious. Rusev should've taken it. Was half expecting to see Cena wrap his star spangled cape around Lana at the end.

Divas were excellent. Again. I still feel like a dick every time I say the word Diva. The women are stepping up like fuck at the moment.

Had extremely low hopes for HHH/Sting so was pleasantly surprised. Sting still looks like a twat dressed for Halloween in the 90s. HHH has still got the best intros this side of the Undertaker. Half decent match, great cameo-fest melee, but they need to put DX and NWO to bed now. The War ended a long time ago. Sting - meh as he always was, so I guess he does still got it. Trips has still got a few more good matches in him though. The correct result.

The Rock with Ronda Rousey was done brilliantly. Steph's really starting to own that character... she and Trips pitched that audience baiting before the music hit perfectly. Rocky was Rocky. Can normally take him or leave him, but he's a master at playing with the crowd... he barely had to say a word.

Undertaker/Wyatt was the only disappointment for me. Is it me or did it just not work in the daylight? Both entrances felt kind of muted and not exactly spine-chilling. I was pulling for a Wyatt demolition finishing with Taker being taken away in a coffin, but I guess I can wait a year... he's coming back, right? Sadly. This was one match too many IMHO. He had all the old moves, but none of the gravity.

The Main Event was fucking amazing. I honestly thought I'd spoiled it for myself this morning - I knew I couldn't watch until I got in from work tonight, so avoided any talk of it all day... but flicking down a newspaper's website I saw a headline which I thought said Roman Reigns had won. Flicked away, tried to convince myself I could've misread the intention and maybe it was that he'd failed... I'd completely misread the NAME. HALLEFUCKINGLUJAH.

Match itself was brutal. Lesnar is a fucking beast and I'm so glad they didn't let Reigns take the strap after getting dominated so heavily. Rollins taking it with a fall over Reigns hopefully means Brock can be kept out of the picture long enough for them to put on a programme and hype up a brutal re-crowning of the Beast at Survivor Series or Royal Rumble.

I've never been sold on Brock despite it being pretty clear he's an absolute tank. Now I'm convinced. He lost, but he COULDN'T be beaten. Reigns has gone a tooth or two towards paying his dues. Rollins has cemented his cowardly, devious character for good.

Best ending to a Wrestlemania main event in YEARS and best use of MITB EVER.

Almost flawless and I was expecting one of the worst.

BRAVO.

Just silence mid match, starting sentences and ending them mid sentence, letting full move sequences go by without so much as a peep.

That was just Mike Adamle level announcing, and it's not like he didn't know he was going to be doing play by play, you'd think he would have been ready.

He'd get so dramatically cheered at this point if he turned. Especially if he went 'cool heel' on some worst-days nWo shit. Screw that. Counter culture crowds would ruin it all the way.

He needs some kind of vulnerability before the turn...some losses to ON-ROSTER talents that aren't no-sold for instance. Then, play up the 'getting old', 'doesn't have it anymore' thing that they hinted at with Rusev Crush. Then have him throw steps at Daniel Bryan or something...leaving him 'hurt'. You know, WWF 86 hurt. Not real surgery and shit hurt. Then...as long as he didn't try to be cool with it, he'd have a shot at being a heel. You know...like Miz does it...real, no half-measured heeling.

And he's strong enough to be a MONSTER heel if they did it right.

But I'm wasting characters..it ain't happening.

The chants during the Divas match were super lame. Like I said after Wrestlemania, I haven't watched anything other than the Undertaker-Michaels/HHH matches since whenever Lesnar and the Revolution were debuting but that Divas match at Wrestlemania and on RAW really struck me. I just like the athleticism of it, I've had an internet crush on AJ Lee for a couple years now thanks to gifs on forums but had never seen her wrestle and, man, compared to what I remember of women's wrestling that whole scene has come a long way.

Female matches used to be boring ass fights with a strip tease substituting for an exclamation point when I was a huge wrestling fan. I remember Trish Stratus being a believable power house, and maybe Sable had a nice finishing move...? But these women now are really cool. Plus I have a more discerning eye now than I did when I was 13 so I notice the botches that went on during the Cena match, but when AJ Lee was in that boston crab-type thing that looked pretty painful. She was all folded up in a way I haven't seen since the heyday of WCW cruiserweight iron man matches.

Thank the Post-WCW indy scene. That's a chunk of WWE's roster now...especially on the men's side.

And Sarah Del Rey is a big one to thank for how the ladies are working now. She was the business on the indies for a good while (link her with Daniel Bryan and Cesaro for the wrestling nerd appeal too). Since there's good wrestling people lurking in the shadows in WWE, she's at the performance center getting most of the ladies right before they even get to the main roster. And get this...they get to wrestle on NXT. I mean 10+ minutes of Japanish-slow burn until everything is on fire wrestling. And when they wrestle more, the good ones get better until they are REALLY GOOD. Imagine that. NXT has at least a small stack of damn good women's matches. Check that out too.

Crowds have gotten to the point where they want to be run the shows now. And they'll be fun for a while. Then, like little kids, they get tired and become jackasses...crying over every little thing that isn't exactly what they want. That written, WWE needs their ass whooped for sticking Reigns out there with Show/Kane. The kid deserves more if they give a shit about not ruining him forever. Rollins is made and can survive almost anything. Orton too. But Reigns needs help. And he deserves it.

watching the ep now, the 8 man tag match was nice, good exposure for the Lucha Dragons and The Ascension finally got to look like a real team on Raw for once....

-Mick Foley stand up on Friday
-$30 tix to NXT after Foley
-Afternoon with Jim Ross on Saturday (heard way too much about Ric Flair's cock)
-Free tix to the Hall of Fame Saturday night (heard amazing stories)
-Free tix to AXXESS before Wrestlemania
-WRESTLEFUCKINMANIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-2nd row tix that end up being front row tix right behind the bell keeper and right next to Noelle Foley

Did all this shit with my 2 closest friends... We had a great time!

and Mick hit on my girlfriend... For a wrestling nerd, I'm bragging about that... haha

wanted to hit up wrestlecon, but it just didn't work out... Either way, saw 3 titles change hands at Mania... And was part of one of the rowdiest crowds the WWE has ever seen on RAW...

(I'm not completely proud of that last part)

very pretty, voice a little deeper than I was expecting... She's towering over her man, Frank the Clown... I saw or ran into them like 4 times over the weekend... They stay glued to their phones...and really love their wrestling...

She got a pretty nice butt, too... Not popping out, but because she's so tall, it's big because it's proportionate...

And yeah, the chants about the Divas weren't cool... Loved that people tried starting up a CM Punk chant and people booed them and began a AJ LEE chant...

The crowd was full of wrestling hipster fans... They love NXT, but act like WWE is shit... At the NXT event, there was a "Better than Mania" chant for a quick second going... Also, when HHH came out and mentioned Wrestlemania, a guy behind me booed... Fuck that shit... NXT is dope, but there's not a single guy on that roster that wouldn't rather be wrestling at WM than be wrestling in that school gym...

I will say this, during the main event on Raw, the crowd was not having it... No one got booed louder than Reigns... Kain, Show and Ryback came in and the crowd was chanting "Worse Than Cena!" Shit was crazy how the crowd really hi-jacked the main event....

Finally got to cross off a Wrestlemania off my bucket list.

They were having trouble getting everyone in on time so we got into Levi's midway through the tag team four-way. Our seats were in the 400 section, top of the stadium behind the stage. After the battle royal we walked to the concourse level and spent the rest of the PPV standing behind the last row of the lower bowl.

From my POV, the loudest pops of the afternoon were the Rock/Rousey segment and Seth cashing in the MITB. It actually came across a lot better on TV, but Levi's has a serious problem keeping sound in. I can see how the Niners were frustrated with the acoustics during the season. (Because that's their only issues...riiiight)

I spent the last match next to some 10-12 year old who was a big Reigns mark. He was a good sport and we had a good time talking trash back and forth. He lost his shit when Brock got busted open and Reigns was making his comeback and got all upset when Seth cashed in. They mentioned it on Cheap Heat today, but it's hella fun watching wrestling with kids.

RAW was a completely different experience. We were 15 rows up next to the stage and cot damb that pyro is loud. Crowd was definitely smarky and had chants going throughout the night. NXT was super over and it was kinda cool being part of the wave. The divas stuff was excessive, but the Bellas were hamming it up. During the main event Ryback was actually feeding the section on the floor different chants during the match - which led to a "We want Ryback" chant toward the end.

I don't have time for it, but cot damn wrestling has a hold on my balls again. Can't wait for NXT tonight.

but I gave WM 31 a chance....

First my negatives.

Cena won the belt AGAIN....does he ever lose?? I don't follow closely, so I don't know the leadup to Cena/Rusev (besides the Rusev undefeated angle), but damn... It's the same reason I hated Hogan until the NWO (SPOILER: I WIN...LOL) Ugh.

Stephanie/HHH vs Rock/Rousey could have been waaaaay better IMO.

The fact that every match had everyone's finisher not finish at least once. If it was some of them, then it would be great, since some "finishers" basically shouldn't be IMO...but every single finisher failed in every match. I guess it's supposed to build suspense, but when no one's finisher works...for 4 hours...

Undertaker needs to hang it up. The streak was the only reason for him to keep running him out there. When they ended that...he should stop. Was this to let him go out with a "W"? OK, but no more please.....please.

Now the positives...

The matches were excellent for the most part.

Diva match better than expected...is the women's division significantly better thn it used to be? Like I said, I don't follow closely enough to know either way...

Lesnar/Reigns was good. Total squash for Lesnar for the majority, then the frustration of not being able to finish, then somehow, one Roman move and Brock is almost dead? Meh... Then THE MITB CASH IN WAS GREAT!!!! Never saw that coming!!! Only way that could have been better is if they didn't hit the music before Rollins came down the ramp...minimized the surprise IMO, but a very good match and conclusion.

Randy Orton, at least for me, never disappoints.

Sting/HHH is like Mayweather/Pacquiao, years too late IMO. Slow match, but the DX angle was good and the NWO entry was great!!! Well done WWE Creative!

The whole show came off much better than it looked on paper going in. Top to bottom, best WM in years...

> Cena won the belt AGAIN

I'm just as tired of Cena as the next guy, but the good thing is at least this isn't the WWE belt. Before it was announced Brock would come back to WWE, there were rumors that he would re-sign, retain the belt, then have Cena and Bryan win their titles in order to elevate the belts. This meant the WWE champ would be a part-timer, allowing the other two belts room to grow. This made a TON of sense, and having Cena/Bryan be the titleholders lent credence to that.

However, now that we know Seth is champ (and people are pumped), that sorta goes by the wayside. Cena being *that* beltholder is still a good thing though, so hopefully they keep their (rumored) original plans intact to elevate the midtier championships.

> The fact that every match had everyone's finisher not finish at least once

This has been an unfortunate wrestling trope for some time now. Even Orton's RKO hasn't been sacred for a few years now.

> Undertaker needs to hang it up

I don't disagree, but I have a feeling Bray could come out of this looking well if they handle it right.

> Diva match better than expected...is the women's division significantly better thn it used to be?

There has been a clamoring to "give Divas a chance" so they're not merely eye candy for the pathetic 5 minute matches they're given. There's a rumor that Creative is listening, so let's see if that comes to pass.

That said, the Diva's division in NXT is fucking GREAT. No question Sasha Banks and Charlotte Flair had the match of the night for the NXT house show this past Friday, with Vince in attendance, no less. Sasha (as champ) won, but Charlotte got a massive "THANK YOU CHARLOTTE" ovation when she was exiting the ramp. Really intelligent match, with several throwbacks to their prior matches when Sasha was chasing, then eventually won, the belt from Charlotte. If you don't watch NXT, then I would recommend watching at least their matches if you're interested in the Divas at all.

> Lesnar/Reigns was good

After rewatching the match on TV, I was even more impressed at the booking and almost forgot Seth was going to cash in. Great work all around, and before the match most people didn't think it was possible for Reigns to get such a positive reaction afterwards.

> Sting/HHH is like Mayweather/Pacquiao, years too late IMO

It was always gonna be a gimmick match, and that's fine IMO. Don't judge May/Pac until after the fight happens tho, lol

> The whole show came off much better than it looked on paper going in

Yup. Terrible booking aside, the show was incredible. I think it was Stroud that said each match gave the fans something different without feeling like a familiar retread.

but apparently Vince is now a big fan of NXT?

http://uproxx.com/prowrestling/2015/04/vince-mcmahon-attended-his-first-live-nxt-show-this-past-weekend-and-is-now-a-big-fan/

One of the more exciting things about this year’s post-WrestleMania Raw was the debuting of NXT talent. Even better, Kalisto and Neville were treated like stars and really given the chance to shine. No JBL screaming about what insolent punks they are. No “they made it in NXT, but this is the BIG LEAGUES” comments from Michael Cole. No Charlotte getting rolled up by Natalya. What changed?

Vince McMahon finally watched NXT, that’s what. While Vince has to have seen tapes, he’d never attended NXT live until last week’s live show in San Jose. Vince was there along with Stephanie McMahon and Shawn Michaels, and he apparently enjoyed the show, liking the action and the hot crowd of nearly 5,000 in attendance. The show went an hour longer than it was supposed to, and speculation is that it was Vince’s call.

Vince is said to be particularly high on two talents, and they’re both women. Vince was very into Charlotte and decided that he wanted her to be a major focus of their upcoming Tapout ad campaigns. He’s also reportedly a fan of Sasha Banks’ personality and work.

Could it really be this simple? Could Vince actually watching NXT and realizing that it kicks ass be the missing part of the puzzle? Could NXT stars being called up be a less scary prospect all of a sudden? Hey, Neville didn’t show up with Mighty Mouse ears on Raw, so things may be looking up.

I agree....But to me it's even bigger than that. That Sasha chick is REALLY good....I've seen a few matches featuring her and I was very impressed. But when I went on YouTube to see a compilation of her ring moves I was like holy shit...lol

It seems like all the bigwigs was at that NXT taping. Banks especially was touched when Shawn Michaels gave her props. I hope Vince understands he has some special talent at NXT....

Interview with Sasha Banks. Interesting stuff....

WWE NXT / 1 Apr 2015
Women's Champion Sasha Banks on NXT's Growing Popularity and Her Own Success

By Eric Goldman

With the city filled with wrestling fans from across the world, in town for WrestleMania, over 5000 people packed the Event Center at San Jose University on Friday night to see a special NXT live show - and to say the response was positive would be a huge understatement. Despite the late hour (the show began at 10pm and ended at 1am), the crowd was incredibly excited and engaged through the entire event and one of many chants throughout the night was “Better than Mania!” But arguably the match with the best and most enthusiastic feedback was the one between NXT women’s champion Sasha Banks and her current rival, Charlotte, as the two delivered a terrific performance, filled with exciting and impressive spots.

Born Mercedes Kaestner-Varnado, Sasha Banks is getting more and more attention in NXT, winning the title at the conclusion of an incredibly well received Fatal 4-Way match recently, against Charlotte, Bayley and Becky Lynch. The day after that NXT show in San Jose, Matt Fowler and I sat down with Sasha backstage at the Axxess fan event to discuss NXT’s growing popularity, the love fans have for the women’s division and what it’s like achieving her lifelong dream of success as a pro wrestler.
NXT women's champion Sasha Banks.

NXT women's champion Sasha Banks.

Eric Goldman: Your show last night really came together pretty much at the last minute, right?

Sasha Banks: So quick. We found out the day after our show in Columbus or maybe Cleveland and they said maybe. And then we finally got an email that said, “We’re doing it” two weeks after. It was just mind blowing. Amazing.

Goldman: You already have great crowds, but this was a late night show and kind of a different vibe. What was it like experiencing all that?

Banks: Well, I’m still on Florida time so I really wrestled at like four in the morning. How do I explain it? Because I’ve been able to do live events with WWE and the crowds are like eight thousand, ten thousand. But last night, there was nothing that compared to the feeling that every single fan came out because they were an NXT fan. Every single fan out there… They didn’t have a John Cena shirt. They didn’t have a Batista shirt. They had NXT shirts. They knew everybody and last night it just felt like everyone was a star. Everyone was John Cena. Everyone was an Undertaker. I can’t describe it. When I walked out there, I was just blown away. It was amazing.
Sasha Banks and Charlotte face each other on NXT.

Sasha Banks and Charlotte face each other on NXT.

Matt Fowler: Can you talk about your chemistry in the ring with Charlotte? You guys are incredible when you go face to face. It just sort of clicks.

Banks: Hmm, it’s weird because I started out with Charlotte. We trained together and we worked together since day one, before we were even anything, before we even had a name and I was just Mercedes and she was just Ashley. We started in this little warehouse where it felt like nobody gave us a chance at that time. We had to build each other and work with each other to make ourselves better and to get that spot. And to see where we are now, it’s truly incredible and every time I wrestle her, I just go “How are we going to frickin’ out do ourselves again?” I don’t know how I pull some of this stuff out, but with her, something does click, where we just trust each other and we just go out there and let it happen and it’s been such an amazing feud where it does feel like a Trish and Lita . It’s unbelievable… if you can see my chest, I’ve got the warrior wound.

It’s been incredible but I feel like I have those moments with Bayley too and I’m excited to work with Becky and so many girls and to have the opportunity to see what I can bring to the table and what we can bring to these matches.

Fowler: There were great matches all night long last night, but a lot of people were saying the women’s matches were the best.

Banks: I don’t… I’m so “Ah!” from it because backstage was DX, was the Kliq! We had Scott Hall, X-Pac, Shawn Frickin’ Michaels… and Vince McMahon watched! Like, screw the match. Those people watched me and I came back and Shawn Michaels was like, “Oh my god!” That’s the best feeling ever. I don’t know. It’s always my goal to have the best match, but for people to say it and for legends to say it… I’m just so humbled by it.
Why Wrestling Fans Should Be Watching NXT
07:56

Goldman: In general, NXT's success keeps escalating, the fanbase keeps escalating. With that, there’s this really big respect for the womens’ division and what you all are accomplishing. Has that been amazing to see, for all of you, that the work you’re doing is getting so appreciated?

Banks: It really is, because I never was a big fan of the Divas growing up because I didn’t have the role models. I never thought I could possibly make it here, because I didn’t feel like I fit the role of a Diva at the time. Just to see how diverse our group is and how hard we work… We work so hard to have that respect. Not for people to be like, ‘That was a good Divas match,” but "That was a good match" in general. We always want to steal the show and make a name where people go, “Wow, those NXT Divas, that’s something to watch.”

Every time I do autograph signings, people want to talk about our Fatal 4-Way match. I’ve never had such a big response for a match before and knowing that I got to do it with those three girls and I know, ten years from now, we’re going to be looking back and being like, “Oh my god, we did it.” We started this journey. We’re the start of changing the women’s division and it’s just going to get bigger and better. I guarantee, years from now, people are going to be like, "Holy s**t.”

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

107. "That match- and finish- saved Reigns' career. I've watched 3 times"
In response to Reply # 0

That shit had the look and feel of a big time fight, be it boxing, MMA, whatever. This shit felt big time. I've watched the match three times and I really don't much to critique outside of the shortened match time at the expense of way, way, WAY too much fucking HHH on the show (even with the Rousy payoff, that shit didn't need that much time).

Another 5 minutes and that shit would have been a match of the decade candidate. It's definitely alongside Bryan/Orton/Batista as the best main event of the last 6-7 years as it is. They worked to a fever pitch and I think with 5 more minutes of Rollins putting in work we'd be looking at a masterpiece.

That said, they saved Romans ass. They can keep building him and tweaking him and let the kid grow without an anchor around his waist. Seth is clearly ready for that spotlight and he's carried Raw for months as it is. It's a shame he's stuck with Show and Kane but whatever.

The whole match was very well executed and told a fantastic story. The downside is that it's crystal clear what kind of all-out, all time classic could be had with Brock/Cesaro or Brock/Sheamus. Say what you want about Sheamus the character, I can take or leave him, but he's a top shelf worker. Either match would stand tall next to any technical masterwork you could think of. We'll probably never get either match but those are some of the best matches pro wrestling has to offer right now.

****I just read Sheamus may have been a bit reckless with Bryan tonight. He's still a great worker, especially if we're talking big men. He's a Hoss's Hoss.

108. "Agreed wholeheartedly on Reigns"
In response to Reply # 107

What really really made it for me is how predictable I thought it all was.

The whole match I just kept going, Ugh he is going to take like 1000 suplexes, then hit 1 superman punch and spear and win. When he hit his first punch and spear and went for the pin I was ready to break my TV. The Brock kickout was amazing.

But even then, I was like ok so he hits 2, makes sense and same thing happened again. The entire time that Brock was squashing it felt like a Reigns win was inevitable which made the wildcard ending even more unexpected. Especially happening at 10:56 when at that point you are ruling out the cash in because there isnt enough time.

The match itself was not perfect, but the booking and storytelling and way it fucked with marks and smarks a like was flawless.

I don't hate Reigns, I was just not ready for him to be the one who just beats Lesnar and is forced as the main guy. Now give him some time to chase Rollins and I think I can get invested in him.

As for Rock Rousey, I feel like it went long for 2 reasons. 1 they wanted it to be as dark as possible for Taker vs Wyatt so tried to kill time, and also really wanted the PPV to end at like 10:59 to mess with people who are used to an ending at 10:53 or so. The late finish really changed what I expected to happen since it felt there was no way for a cash in.

Instead of 7. That'd be a good way to get to the dark for Taker/Bray.

I'm not saying it was a great plan, I just think that is why the segment felt so dragged out. They probably got to that point and were like "ok take as long as you possibly can so we can try to kill some daylight"

how many people have had beef with rollins over the past 9-10 months? pretty much everyone, right? now a whole lot of people could be inserted into the main event who wouldn't have fit otherwise. plus he really pulls the best out of people, so any combination should work.

He was an extra interview on the Mania wrap up episode but the interview was pre mania.

Basically said how Seth Rollins has limitless potential and every year at Mania we are going to look back at where Seth Rollins is and consider where he was at the previous year Mania peanuts compared to it.

If you respect Heyman's eye for talent (and how can you not) he basically expects Rollins to achieve GOAT level

I think they've all benighted to a certain degree (though reigns should've evolved and Ambrose should win at some point), but none more than Rollins. I'd say most people would've pegged him as the group's Marty Jannetty before the breakup, now he looks like the star.

Though I don't recall anyone seeing labeling either member as the "Marty" of the group. I thought then and think now that all three are world champion material.

Ambrose will hold that strap at some point, as will Reigns, though WWE has shown a penchant for trying their damndest to ass fuck Dean's stature into the lower mid card. He's still hot enough that fans will get behind him in a second if they decide to pull the trigger, but we'll see how long that lasts.

In response to Reply # 116

Ambrose was the charisma and interview guy

Rollins was the high flyer and great wrestler

Reigns was the monster of the group

All of them were the best at their part and didn't do much of the other stuff. Post break up Rollins has gotten way more microphone time than he ever had as the Shield so now he added that tool that was kind of being hidden away before which is why I think his quick rise surprised some people.

Reigns we all knew would be the guy eventually because a monster like him with his lineage always will be. I personally thought they'd push Ambrose before Rollins but that's also because I expected him to make the heel turn instead. The Rollins turn was kind of the last one we expected which helped push him so high.

In response to Reply # 0

Hear me out:

Reigns sees Sheamus attack Bryan one time too many, say, after Extreme Rules. At that point Sheamus should have red hot heat if they have him beat down a few more faces (Mizdow and Zack Ryder come to mind) in addition to Bryan and Ziggler.

They can build Reigns as a guy who actually stands up for other faces, unlike they've done with Cena, and Sheamus is in the perfect situation to build quality heat. Both guys would benefit from that feud and Bryan can continue on with Barrett and Dolph and whoever else they want to insert into that picture. LUKE Harper, I suppose. If not Reigns, then Ryback needs a slot with Sheamus. A lot can be built using Bryan and Sheamus right now and I hope they see it.

Had she not had the tweets back and forth with Steph I don't think we'd have seen her on TV leading up to Mania or at Mania. They'd be happy to keep her away so that fans don't think about Punk.

They rode her heat from the tweets and now she goes away. I wouldn't even be surprised if they struck a deal that if she came back to push the divas segments a bit they'd let her out of her contract or something like that.

i was there live and it truly is a spectacle. been a wrasslin' fan for most of my life and i had my "wrestlemania moment".

thoughts for what it's worth...

-i agree that the last match saved reigns. with his move set, you could really sell this guy as a realistic type brawler (brock lesnar ajace).

-i would love to know what sting was thinking walking to the ring in his first mania. he's seen the biggest stage but like they say this is the "grandest stage" of them all. smoke and mirrors but this match came off really good live. i watched it on tv though and it wasn't nearly as good.

-i love what they're doing to the secondary belts. i really really really hope this sets up three long term champs. it makes sense, the lead heal champ and two face secondary champs.

-i also like john cena's challenge. it's old school and a schtick that could play well for both young and older fans.

-danielson is the perfect IC champ. this used to be my favorite belt and i'm really looking forward to what they do w/ this.

-no one wants to see sting-taker.

-ronda could get it.

... If they setup a year long build (and they still have time to start it), it could be one for the ages. Albeit a slow match but could have major potential. I mean NO ONE has ever seen these 2 guys go at it, EVER. 10 years too late but still the mark in me wants to see it happen, would definitely be a hype Wrestlemania moment.

you can't set up a year long build between the two because taker is best used when he's rarely seen and sting can't carry a one person feud (like bray did). it's not in his character...especially as a face.

plus, what do you do w/ the finish? taker can't lose twice (i already feel like he shouldn't have come back after last year to preserve his mystique) and that sucks for sting if he loses his only two mania matches.

It was great to watch on screen but to be there would have been incredible.

I'm actually considerably less enthused by the US and IC title situations though. I remember reading a lot of pre-Mania predictions and people were saying things like Cena and Bryan would win their respective matches "giving credibility to the titles". I never got that as a sentiment - to me, it makes no difference *who* holds the titles, but just that they have a hotly-contended division with good feuds, matches and TV time. In fairness, they have been doing so over the past several months - Dolph/Miz, Dolph/Harper, etc.

The thing with Cena's title defenses I'm not really a fan of. Obviously, he's taking a step down in holding that title, but to take that step down and obliterate all those contenders every single week... I dunno, it doesn't work for me for showcasing that division. He would never do that with the World Title so I don't get why it's happening now.

I hate Cena, but I LOVE what they're doing with him and the title. I hope he holds this "open challenge" every week until like Summer Slam. He's actually the perfect person to sell the U.S. Title with all his military support, and holding the open challenge means we get to see him in the ring with a bunch of midcarders that would never end up in matches with him otherwise. Making it a surprise challenger each week means I'm actually looking forward to Cena matches now.

On the flipside, imagine if he drops the belt next week to like Miz or whoever. There is no way Miz (or any midcarder, really) could give weight to the belt other than Cena. And, to his credit, Cena looks like he really cares and is putting in work on elevating the title. Still sorta generic and boring, but at least he has purpose.

I have no problem with Cena holding the belt - it's the weekly challenges thing I'm not overly sold on is all. I understand that it's only been a week or two but currently I don't see how it goes about creating a healthy US title division - which is what the title will need if it's going to succeed - if he's going to defeat everyone within it.

To be honest, I'm not even sure they're trying to develop a US Title "division". I think (hope?) he just keeps defending it until he drops it to a worthy holder that can keep the momentum up (maybe Neville?).

To give it any sort of prominence though, I think it makes sense to beat all comers for the time being though. This means the belt gets defended every week, and every week Cena is gonna sell the shit outta it. Remember Ambrose's US Title reign? Yeah, neither do I.

what i would like to see is that the ic belt becomes the "wrestlers" division (remember when tna's x division was good) and that's where you have real competition.

the us belt could then be, hate to say it, the mark's belt. let cena squash the miz one week then put up a good match against ambrose the next. they can carry that on and, like you said eventually he drops it to a monster heel and sets up a chase. something like that can take you at least to summerslam, hopefully beyond (funny how a couple months now seems like a "long run").

I wasn't watching wrestling back then so maybe someone can fill in or correct it:

"Sting Vs HHH was effectively the end of "The Invasion." Those two guys both missed out on it the first time, Sting due to his contract and HHH due to injury.

It now makes perfect sense as to why that match played out the way it did. Both guys missed the blow off to what should have been the biggest wrestling storyline in history.

I had been a bit frustrated about it all until I realised those two men never got an opportunity for the WWE/WCW angle and pay off. Obviously Sting hadn't but it slipped my mind until now that Trip's quad cost him his chance to bask in the WWE victory back in '01/'02."

it had, sorry for the pun, no chance in hell of living up to expectations because of two things...(1) vince was never gonna fully let go of the fact that he viewed the wcw guys as second class (see rock's "who in the blue hell are you" welcome to booker and (2) due to contract situations they got everyone in such a staggered manner. it would have been much better to have everyone invade at once. if i recall, sting, steiner and a couple of key players took a while (in sting's case, years, to sign).

-pacing: i feel like this has been a problem for the last couple of years (we have naitch to thank for that). the earlier guys weren't paced well so the later guys had to pay for it.

-bruno: legend, my uncle is from pennsylvania and he got me in to wrestling. bruno was his childhood hero. they're supposedly casting for a movie on this guy's life. i hope they pull it off.

-zybsko: i tried to pull off a where's the nunchuck's chant but i don't think anyone around me remembers the nunchuck's. spudheads.

-people: people watching was great. so many people dressed like macho. though the best get up was the dude in mania dressed like rick the model martel...he had everything, trunks, scarf, boots, perfume (arrogance).

-inductees: they need to minimize this next year. just do a handful. this would have been great if it were just nash, savage, bushwackers, alundra blaze and rikishi. i say alundra blaze only because she actually had a good speech.

-bushwhackers: did they show bret, piper and duggan doing the bushwhacker dance? pretty cool.

-seating: why was darren young in the front row?!?!?!

Maybe the Shield guys? But outside of them, I can't think of any recent callups who have felt like such legit parts of the show so quickly. I guess Paige won the title on the night of her debut, but they kept making her wins seem fluke-y for a little while before letting her really get going.

I'm really enjoying how they've handled the Neville stuff so far. It helps that Neville is absurdly athletic and awesome, of course. After how some of the other NXT callups have gone, it's nice to see one of the NXT stars hit the ground running, especially considering all the talent in NXT currently who seem like they should be huge once they reach the main roster.

It's crazy what happens when they make a decision to get something right. Or maybe Indy dudes and wrestling nerds love each other.

Jern is doing springboard stunners and having 2007 wwe main events with the whole midcard. Yesgoat has the IC title. Rollins is doing million dollar man heel laughs. He's even making Kane character development an interesting thing. Oh...and Brock is gonna show up and violently suplex everyone at some point.

Now, if they could stop setting Reigns up to be a Bullet Club member in 2 years, that would be great. Show? FFS! Like they couldn't have Sheamus beat him up and have hossathons to help him be more over...

The Kane thing was interesting - if they turn him face, all he can do is feud with Show, and lose to Reigns, so that seems a strange decision if that's where they're going.

Also surprised they're going with Reigns and Show. Bray is due to announce his new feud soon and I was hoping it would be Reigns. Still could be I guess.

He's been great, and they've really given him a chance to showcase his skills, but the fact that they were floating around an idea of him as a mighty mouse character gives me little faith. Great match with Ziggler last night though.I kinda rolled my eyes at 2 open challenges in one night, but both were done really well.

Is the entire roster gonna kick out of the AA though? Jesus. I never thought I'd complain about Cena being made to look weak, but cmon. This is Raw not Wrestlemania.

cause he doesn't have to become a legit heel to do that. you can tell a crowd off and still be a face. it is pretty amazing how he can turn things around in his favor though, and i do love that smirk.

as tiresome as Cena's act is, it's also pretty effective in turning a crowd in his favor or riling them up so they're excited to see him lose. Reigns tries to do the same thing with stuff like "yeah, I DID go to Suplex City and I'm still here" and it's just plain boring. he absolutely needs to find a new character, stop resting on the Shield's laurels, and find his own thing.

I agree in general, but he's being booked badly.

His thing is getting booked with wrestlers who can and will make him look good. The roster has a gang of folks who can and will do that, given a chance. Then, he's athletic enough to do at least his part. He's like Ultra Lex Luger. And he should basically never talk for long on a live mic until he's ready for that because that isn't his thing. Him being a cool guy backstage off mic doesn't matter.

Wrestling's history is filled with a gang of workers like that who have gotten over and made money. But WWE doesn't have the liberty of forcing him on us in the wrong way for 5 years until folks submit and buy into it (ahem..Jern Cena).

Watch 2014 Rumble. Or most of those six man joints. Roman had momentum.

BUT

WWE took for granted that he was young and at least kinda green compared to some of the vets they have on the roster right now. They put him out there 'naked' vs some questionable folks and/or with horrendous material. He had the rough go with Randy. They let the word get out that he was 'the guy' to take down Lesnar. Yesgoat/small wrestler fanboys saw it as a slight to Yesgoat/small wrestlers. Let's ignore that Yesgoat was out of action for nearly a year and is still basically a lock to end up retiring 'early' due to recurring health issues. Let's also ignore that WWE should have Benoit and Eddy on their minds regularly (IE: smaller guys who drugged it up to stay in the ring even with various injuries and ailments).

Let's also ignore that NXT is largely a catalog of 'smaller wrestlers' who will likely be 'better WWE wrestlers' than Yesgoat, who I like quite a bit. But folks act like he's the only 'small' guy on the roster and when he loses, all 'good and small' wrestlers lose. BS. I watched HHH sell his shit at Mania 30 bigtime. And I'm starting to buy into the idea that if Bryan wasn't hurting, he'd be all up at the top of the card. And Phil wasn't 'big' either. And really...Steve Austin wasn't exactly a huge man by mid-90s wrestler standards either. If he didn't have bad knees, back, and neck, who knows how long he would've been on top. I DO know that he was a much better worker than the meat of his 98-2001 King Shit run showed.

the crowds were mostly unhappy he was being shoved down our throats (you could hear it during those via satellite promos), it just happened that Bryan's comeback lined up with Reigns' push and Bryan was the most viable alternate to be out into that spot. There's a whole bunch of guys people would've been happy with over Reigns. Rollins was the perfect call though, so I'm glad they pulled the trigger.

I kinda buy it too. Cena is going to get the point in his career where he stays out of the title picture most of the time and just works hard and people will just be glad for his work more than anything.

Hell I enjoy his current open challenge bit now. Yes he is going to win every week, but he is working every single week making the US title matter which nobody has done in years. Plus he is having pretty good matches against guys we don't normally get to see him face when he is busying beating 5 authority wrestlers at once every main event.

And when someone (presumably an upper midcarder a year away from being the main guy, maybe some NXT guy) does beat him eventually that guy will be super made and so will the title.

Apparently it has nothing to do with the safeness of the move (cause it actually is pretty safe), it's just that they have some lawsuits involving head injuries right now and they don't want the champ doing a move that appears to put people at risk of a head injury. That's disappointing. It had become one of my favorite finishers. I hope they come up with something better than whatever he did last night.

I don't want Rollins to take the fall for any ratings stuff...especially if they are gonna swipe his finisher AND saddle him with Kane all summer. I need them to get Rollins an acceptable finisher for a shady heel. You know, like the curb stomp. Call it something else. Make him put his foot more into backs than heads. c'mon!

Sami Zayn is the shit by the way. He's my 'best dude on the roster' cat right now...after Rollins that is. I want him to win like every time.

and while I love the move and think it's perfect for his character, I'd love it if the top guys each had something like this. That way, once someone DOES finally kick out of it (at wrestlemania only please) it'll be even crazier.
