"Nikola Mirotic is very good at basketball. "

Nikola Mirotic has the tools/potential to be the second best Euro ever, behind Dirk.

He hasn't had one full season to figure out the NBA game yet he's beasting nightly against good competition.

Discuss.

But yeah, he's been playing well with the extended time. No doubt Thibs trusts him now. He had him at the 3 with both Gasol and Noah last night against the Pacers.

But he'll need to eat into Dunny's minutes at the three. If Mike's not scoring in the playoffs he can't be out there for extended minutes.

Still young, showing a lot of talent.

But to pass Dirk AND Pau? That means he's a HOFer. Tony Parker is right up there too.

I get that he's excited cuz his team has a young dude with a ton of talent. I'd be excited too. It's all splitting hairs to argue over a hypothetical ceiling ranking anyhow.

I just would've said Top 5 instead of second best.

Dirk
Petro
Gasol
Gasol
Parker

No need to keep going into a few other guys that I think he will finish behind. No slight, no knock. I like this guy. In fact I kinda like the Bulls as a whole.

But what you said is just wrong, sorry, he is not *that* good.

To answer your question, Marc Gasol grew up in Barcelona and he moved to Memphis as a teenager to attend high school. Wanna hear a racist ass nickname? THE BIG BURRITO. Anyway after he graduated high school, he went back to Spain to play in La Liga ACB for five or six seasons. So I would definitely consider him a European trained player, European born player, shit just a European player.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

But I clearly said "tools/potential" to be one of the best. Perhaps #2 is a bit much for now.

Personally, I've never seen a 6'11 Euro with a game quite like his outside of Dirk. His offensive game is well rounded, inside and out (and midrange). His handles at 6'11 are good/unique. He's not a pussy. He rebounds properly. He plays defense. Lots to like.

We'll revisit this post in three years.

In response to Reply # 40

>His offensive game is well rounded
>
>He rebounds properly.
>

i've lost count of how many euroforwards over the last decade have
been pegged as "the next dirk", but mirotic is the first i've seen
that i've actually thought has a real chance to fulfill that.

the rebounding is legit. much better than i expected. total reb
per 36 and def reb percentage are just below what guys like love,
griffin, horford and cousins did as rooks. he can bang in a way
that most euro bigs don't.

re: the well rounded offense, the bleacher report article that i
linked has a very thorough and comprehensive analysis, part of
which i'll just swipe here.

...

"Part of what makes Mirotic intriguing is that he’s able to play
with the physical presence of a traditional power forward while
maintaining the shooting stroke of a stretch 4.

Mirotic’s rookie year is unprecedented when factoring in
rebounding, scoring and three-point shooting. In fact, only two
players in history posted his per-36-minute numbers while playing
1,000 minutes...

When you factor in the free-throw line, the number pares down even
more. Mirotic has been to the stripe 4.7 times per 36 minutes this
year. The only one of the seasons above where that’s happened is
Kevin Love in 2013-14, when Love averaged 6.7 free throws per game.

Let’s restate that quickly for emphasis: The only time IN HISTORY
a player averaged more points, threes, free throws and rebounds
per 36 minutes was Kevin Love, last year. That’s the best year of
Love’s career compared to the first year of Mirotic’s.

And while Love makes the best comparison, even that falls short of
demonstrating the diversity of talents offered by Mirotic. During
Love’s 2013-14 season, only 64 of his 2,010 points — or 3.2
percent of them — came on drives, per NBA.com/Stats. By
comparison, Mirotic has scored 67 of his 567 points (11.8 percent)
on drives.

Mirotic is unique because he has a range of abilities we just
haven’t seen before. He has the size and strength to contest for
rebounds inside. He has the shooting touch to knock down threes.
And he has the handles to put the ball on the floor and either get
to the rim or draw fouls.

...

And, above all, his game is made for the modern era.

There are three principal areas that modern analytics tells us are
the most efficient for scoring: outside the three-point line,
inside the restricted area and from the charity stripe. I refer to
them as the “Morey Zones” because they are emphasized by Daryl
Morey, the analytical genius and general manager of the Houston Rockets.

I looked at every player in history who has made at least 50
three-point shots and how many of their points came in the Morey
Zones. I used the player pages at NBA.com/Stats to determine
points in the restricted area.

Mirotic has earned 91.5 percent of his points from those three
areas, which is the most of any rookie, ever. But that’s only the
beginning of the intrigue here. What’s compelling is how evenly
Mirotic distributes his points.

Rudy Fernandez had the second-highest percent, but the bulk of
those — 58.5 percent — were from the three-point line. Players who
had a high percentage with most of them concentrated in one area
didn’t go on to fare so well. Those who were evenly distributed
have had much better careers. Here are the top 10.

http://i.imgur.com/YtrAqiQ.png

What’s most striking is the next guy on that list (11th) might be
the best and most favorable comparison. Only two players have ever
had 25 percent of their points in their rookie season come from
each the three-point line, the free-throw line and inside the
restricted area: Mirotic and Kobe Bryant.

He has a lot to add to his physique and his game but he is just a freshman.

To be clear I like Mirotic a lot, if you guys remember before the season I said he was one of the guys I was most looking forward to seeing and also that the Bulls needed one big and they got two real good ones (him, Gasol) so that put them in business even with Rose's question marks.

But I dunno if I really see that close of a parallel with Dirk though.

since the rose/butler/gibson injuries:
32.1 mpg, 20.8 ppg, 8.2 rpg, 8.1 FTA, .566 TS% (10 games)

he's easily been the best first-year player this season. looks
like a 5 yr vet out there. if he were on a lottery team where he
played more minutes he'd have RotY sewn up. should prolly be in
the 6th man convo too.

he's just such a tough matchup for traditional 4s,
because he can stroke it *and* go off the bounce
*and* beat you down the floor in transition. pick your poison.
guys like z-bo (https://youtu.be/Jkp-M-BkswA?t=9s),
nene (https://youtu.be/I1FbhJsaC9c?t=18s),
even ibaka (https://youtu.be/Lb9oQksTKw4) don't stand a chance.

bleacher report just did an excellent breakdown of his game

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2395153-whats-nikola-mirotics-ceiling-for-the-chicago-bulls-now

some historical comps / context, analytics stuff, as well as eye
test / game tape. he's going to be very very good. when he's
gotten starters tick, he's played at an all star level, as a
rookie. really high floor. ideal game for the modern 3s-and-frees
nba offense. a lot of dirk in his game, and he's already a much
better rebounder / defender than dirk was at the same development stage.

You even tried to give Dion the benefit of the doubt when he first got to Clev. I personally asked you how you felt about it and yeah you would have preferred other players but you didn't go in like you are now. lol

>one of these years y'all will get it together.

Niko got promise, nothing wrong with saying that. I mean, no worse than spewing someone would get 26/9/4 in yr 3 when it hadn't been done in over 20 years.

Jimmy Butler made the allstar, not as a reserve, leads the bulls in scoring AND will make his 2nd all NBA defensive team this year. Not a cysage when he was drafted late 1st round fam. And Kyrie been on notice for 2 seasons for getback...I warned you so no surprise there, doubled down at the start of THIS season too.

It's ok to say you were wrong about Jimmy though.

so why are you tryna pull up LAST YEAR'S stuff when Lu and Booz were STILL there. You question why was i still going at y'all ***THIS YEAR*** after booz and deng left and i can PROVE that y'all came at me FIRST, ***THIS YEAR***

we good now? understand?

and i'm once again saying...i'm out of it now, leave me alone.

let's see if Y'ALL can do that. because if some bulls fans besides you comes at me with some garbage tryna provoke me, you need to check him, because you or murph will be the FIRST to say "why you messing with us, i ain't even say nothing" when i respond to THAT person.

^^^See. And even still, if we don't agree with whomever it is that starts it (and all of us don't always agree) it won't matter because you'll see it as 'Y'ALL'. Regardless if we tell the offender he wrong.

If we talking about this year, I don't even know who provoked the Jimmy discussion. First I saw of it was the 2-way player thread and that wasn't directed at you.

just off injuries alone.

But even you have to admit, Rondo been kinda wack since getting that knee fixed up. 8/8/5 and 32% from the FT line? Rose aint' been good but he's been better than that. And let's not forget, Rondo just turned 29.

Bulls in thick of East chase thanks to Mirotic's big month
Chicago is at last reaping the benefits of Nikola Mirotic's versatility

POSTED: Mar 19, 2015 11:22 AM ET

BY STEVE ASCHBURNER
NBA.COM

CHICAGO — In the Chicago Bulls' perfect world, where no basketball injury rises above the level of jammed finger, Derrick Rose, Jimmy Butler and Taj Gibson never would have gotten hurt, Joakim Noah wouldn't be on a minutes leash ... and Nikola Mirotic might be Doug McDermott.

Mirotic, the rookie forward from Montenegro, has been the bearded lining of the Bulls' otherwise dark cloud lately. His emergence this month has eased the loss of Rose, Butler and Gibson, kept the team afloat (4-6 in March) and elevated the versatile and much-anticipated import's arrival from official to beneficial.

From October through February, Mirotic had shown flashes of the guy for whom Chicago and its fans had been waiting since the 2011 Draft. Over the past 10 games, though, the Bulls' needs and his preparedness have turned such glimpses into an every-night occurrence, thrusting Mirotic not into any favorite's role but at least into the conversations for the Rookie of the Year and Sixth Man of the Year Awards.

In March, Mirotic has averaged 20.8 points and 8.2 rebounds in 32.1 minutes, his production synched up precisely to Gibson's latest sitdown with a sprained ankle. He has scored 20 points or more five times this month, after doing that just twice from October through February. Of the 13 games in 2014-15 in which Mirotic has logged at least 30 minutes, eight have come this month.

Was Mirotic's wonderfulness planted there on the Bulls' bench all along? Or did his development get fast-tracked because coach Tom Thibodeau's rotation had been so riddled with absences? As much as people want every rookie to develop as quickly as possible -- McDermott being the latest for Chicago, deep into a season of injury and inconsistency for the lottery pick from Creighton -- the Bulls were a team chasing a title, built with superior, proven big men.

Mirotic, the player for whom Chicago waited, had to do some waiting of his own.

"With four bigs, and three of those guys being Jo, Taj and Pau , you're like, over a course of a game -- as good as he is -- 'How does he even get in there?' " said Bulls forward Mike Dunleavy. "And now we've had some injuries and he's been able to shine. He's a big-time player. He's a really unique animal. And we're fortunate to have him."

Mirotic, 24, has been the Bulls' most effective closer during the stretch. With Rose absent from that most natural role, with Butler unable to step in as 1A, Mirotic has led Chicago through fourth quarters in March, averaging 10.0 points and 2.7 rebounds. He's getting to the foul line an average of 4.1 times and making 87.8 percent of those.

He's been a rare combination 3-point deep threat, low-post possibilities and open-court aggressiveness, all in an affable, unassuming package. Mirotic is deceptively quick with a lethal first step. His defense needs work, so much that it's been bad mojo for the Bulls when he's on that end next to Gasol. His shooting form looks knock-wristed, the way he holds and releases the ball, yet Chicago generally is happy where it lands.

Mirotic had five points and four rebounds in 12:36 of the first half against Indiana Wednesday, then kicked it to 20 points and five boards in 18:05 of the second. The Pacers have the league's top scoring bench (41.6 ppg) but Mirotic, with 10 points in the fourth quarter, matched eight Indiana subs combined.

"He's spectacular," Pacers coach Frank Vogel said. "Not just in the second half, but he was giving us a lot of problems. Coach Thibs does a good job of using him in different ways, putting him in situations that are unique for power forwards to guard. He's a threat at the 3-point line, great off the bounce and great with his cutting game, so he's a heck of a weapon off the bench."

Said Indiana veteran David West, in no mood to compliment afterward: "He plays a lot like a wing."

That's the tricky part, or at least what might be, if the injured Bulls -- particularly Gibson -- return on time and ready to slip into old roles. Mirotic has played well next to the Gibson, who previously had staked out the team's sixth-man spot, and he's been too good to put completely back into a box. But the minutes he's been getting now likely would get sliced.

"I'm not worried about that," Mirotic said late Wednesday. "I want that Taj (returns) because we need him. For me, always, the most important is the team. ... My role? I don't know. I've said it for 10 minutes (to reporters postgame), I don't care. When I'm on the court, I'm trying to play good defense, good offense, trying to help my team. So I'm really not worried about minutes. I'm going through a good moment where I'm playing more. Just stay focused. The team right now is playing well.

"Playing like this is just a small piece of my basketball."

Frankly, Mirotic might the least surprised of anyone by his recent contributions. He knew he would be lacking defensively and he said Wednesday the number of games, that wear and tear from four in five nights, took him by surprise. But even with numbers more meager in his Euroleague games, Mirotic said he never worried about succeeding offensively in the NBA.

Now he's brimming with confidence and Thibodeau is trusting him enough to use him at small forward, teaming him with Gasol and Noah.

"I'm trying to play different," Mirotic said. "Not just shooting the ball. Trying to share the ball, try to play pick-and-rolls. We're running a lot of plays for me. So I'm really going through a beautiful moment. "

He added: "Just believe -- if they make some plays for you, you're forced to say, 'OK, they believe in me. I believe in myself too. I'm gonna make these shots.' Right now I'm making these shots in the fourth quarter. And I'm really, really happy. Because it's important. Maybe it doesn't happen always with rookies."

He's had a big month, and a great skill set...but 2nd best Euro EVER? Nah

Someone mentioned who he'd have to pass to be in that conversation...and odds are he's not passing EITHER Gasol, or Parker.

Sometimes Bulls fans need to be reigned in...this is the same fanbase that said trading for Kobe wasn't worth giving up Luol Deng

This is a bunch that slammed Andre Miller and Elton Brand and didn't GAF when Jrue and MCW got traded.

You see plenty of people outside the Philly diaspora making the Hakeem comparison, shit pre-draft that was rolling off a ton of tongues before anyone knew where he was going.

Again I don't think anyone is saying he is Hakeem's caliber, just that he has that kind of mobility/agility. But if you wanna be on some Ba "STOP FENCE-RIDING, WHO BETTER!?!" shit, then yeah, Embiid better than your boy.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Like I could compare Anthony Davis's impact with that of Nate Thurmond, though they are different players, or I could compare Jamal Crawford with Earl Monroe even though Monroe is a considerably better player.

Embiid is a mobile big with good feet. That's how he is like Hakeem. He is not a two-time NBA champion. This not complicated.

when you compare embiid to olajuwon... you're comparing embiid
to olajuwon. plenty of other mobile bigs to choose from. when you
specifically put those 2 names in the same sentence, you know what
you're implicitly doing, why be coy about it?

it's no more or less ridiculous than saying mirotic has the skillset
to be one of the best euros ever.

A player can be in the mold of another player but not be as good. Just the other day this came up when I was talking about a player with his teammates. Two of them compared him style-wise with two of the best players as his position, and they were both quick to point out they meant in terms of how he plays, not how he produces necessarily and that he was a less experienced player than either of the guys in question.

Look at the Clippers right now. They lose Crawford and they get Robinson. Robinson, though he is not as good at this stage (and never really was) and is smaller is a similar player *stylistically* to Crawford. Thus he can be compared to him and play the same role, though not as effectively. Similarly Embiid is much closer in style to Hakeem than he is to Camby or either Zeller.

I don't get how this is even a point of contention here unless you guys are just busting my balls. I don't even get the poo-pooing here, I mean it's not like Embiid was the 50th overall pick and is stiffer than Rik Smits. He DOES have some similarities to Hakeem.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

We live in a world where Adam Morrison was compared to Larry Bird and Jimmer Fredette was compared to Allen Iverson.

And you're on my dick about this? Something I didn't even say personally?

Plenty of analysts that have nothing to do with the Sixers are employees, fans or even well-wishers made the comparison. The guy would have gone No. 1 overall like Hakeem if he were healthy. They ARE similar in style, much more similar than Embiid is with Marcus Camby or Cody Zeller.

Does that Rondo threat have you hurt? Are you facing the reality that another Raiders season is upon us? Talk to me, friend.

you're trying to really get at here since he went in 2011 as the 3rd or 4th Euro in his draft, so scouts certainly think/thought more of Saric at comparable points of development.

Saric has been more accomplished at each temporal place-marker, which is basically 16-20 so far.

I watched Saric carry Croatia this past summer in Spain a month or so after turning 20 years old while Mirotic was still playing in junior teams at the same time.

you projecting 3 yr growth trajectories now, marty mcfly? i know
you're nostrabombus and all but gotdam.

i do know that every euro scout who's spoken on the subject says
that mirotic would have been a top 10 pick in last yr's draft,
some say top 5, and that 3 teams offered chicago top 10 picks for
mirotic last june and were turned down.

so logic kinda dictates that if scouts thought the younger saric
had a higher ceiling @ the present, he'd have gone top 10. y'know?

>Saric has been more accomplished at each temporal
>place-marker, which is basically 16-20 so far.

not true. again, mirotic was playing in a *much* stronger league
at a younger age. signed w/ real juniors @ 14 and was playing with
the senior club at 17. spanish ACB is the top european league by
far and the 2nd best pro league on the planet. and he wasn't just
good once he got there. he dominated. won MVPs. won championships.

saric was playing 3rd tier comp in croatia until he moved to
turkey this season. EL MVP @ 20, same age as mirotic. he'll likely
win Rising Star this season, at the same age that mirotic won it.
not sure how that equals 'further along at the same age' or
'better future'?

>I watched Saric carry Croatia this past summer in Spain a
>month or so after turning 20 years old while Mirotic was still
>playing in junior teams at the same time.

again, spain vs croatia. aka: apple, meet orange. dario ain't
cracking spain's senior national roster @ 20 either and if you
believe otherwise, you're sorely mistaken.

and ultimately, as stated above, until he does it in the league,
who really cares?

dude is good tho.

Ok, #2 is excessive. But so is everything that comes out of a Bags keystroke. It's the beauty of OKS. Premature hype keeps this board vibrant.

But, shit. Here you have a Euro that:

1. Is not a pussy.
2. Handles like a guard.
3. Shoots like a Euro.
4. Has a midrange.
5. Doesn't settle, drives to the hoop. Welcomes contact.
6. Will bang inside (with barely any weight training yet, fyi).
7. Rebounds like a 6'11 man should rebound.
8. Plays defense (by default)

^ Name me a guy with similar attributes.

His skill set is unique and uniqueness is what makes a guy great. He's far from great right now, but the *potential* is there due to said uniqueness.

So yeah, fuck off. We'll speak again in three years.

This sounds like a Utah version of Andrei Kirilenko

I'm not saying the kid doesn't have a bright future (if he continues like this), but he's got a ways to go to overstep some Euros.

The bigger question for Bulls fans is that can the Bulls afford to keep him with Butler, Rose, Noah? Because he might be coveted and get thrown some serious dollars soon.

Mirotic has height on AK, but AK was more athletic. I see where you're going, though.

Overall, it seems like Mirotic has more of a well-rounded and natural game. Like, his shit should age better than AK's ever did.

on one hand, he is adjusting to a new league and a new country. on the other he is five years older than most other ROY candidates. he also gets a little more insulation than they do playing on a good team and having a role that's tailored to him.

i like his balance of skill and grit. i like his confidence shooting although the results are kinda mixed. i dunno, just an odd guy to evaluate alongside the more traditional rookies.

U acting like Bari is Magic or Bron in their rookie year....It ain't that serious, dog...

Like others have said, even when Bulls fans don't agree with an initial post from a fellow Bulls fan we still get that "these mufuckas" side-eye...lol

Bottom line: Niko is being viewed as a rookie. If he would have gotten the minutes he would be rookie of the year--this year. That's how good he is. And he does his best work in the 4th Q. He's going to be a problem, Basa....

Bari good....

It would have been interesting to see Niko get the same minutes your boy and Wiggins was getting...

Dude's inside outside game is pretty impressive. But what has people really talking is dude is quite physical. He invites contact. Niko is not fuckin' around...

Of course he wont win it...Because he didn't get the minutes through much of the 1st half of the season that the other rookies got.

But trust, It's obvious Niko far ahead skill wise than the other rookies. He just turned 24 but like others have said he was playing against grown ass men in the best Euro league.

I'm shocked that he has been this good this half of the season. And he gets to the line quite a lot in the 4th Q....He's pretty damn good. Hopefully Mirotic will continue to get playing time under Thibs...

On top of that he has the advantages of being both in a big market and a contending team, which none of those other guys really have (well I guess Noel is in a good-sized market also, but no one cares).

He will or won't win on merit. If he keeps improving over the last 15 games or so then he has a legit shot but Wiggins is flashier, had the bigger billing and will probably have the bigger numbers. Like I said quietly Noel is starting to show why people thought he was No. 1 overall before the knee injury. This kid is going to be very good, like Ben Wallace level good on the defensive end and a better offensive player for sure.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

>On top of that he has the advantage of being (on) a contending team

RotY votes are heavily based on counting stats / per-game
averages, and obviously with the way the nba system is set up the
top rooks usually end up on bad teams with more available minutes
and a bigger role where they can pad those numbers.

look at wiggins. if he'd stayed in cleveland he'd be in the
shumpert role w/ primarily defensive responsibilities, guarding
the opponent's top backcourt threat, taking half as many shots as
he does now, and scoring 8 ppg.

mirotic had 3 rotation studs in front of him and only got an
extended look because of an injury to gibson and minutes leash on
noah. he's only played 30+ minutes in 13 games this year, as
opposed to 53 for wiggins and 40 for noel. in those 13 games he's
averaging over 20 ppg, almost 10 rpg with a TS% close to .600.

he'd be putting up massive scoring numbers on a lesser team.

Yes, those are advantages.

His measured minutes and slightly constrained (at least in a relative way) shot attempts are disadvantages. My point is that it cuts both ways.

again, based on the guys who've actually won RotY in recent history,
i don't think nationally televised games or W/L record factor into
voters' thinking whatsoever.

2014 MCW: 19-63, 0 national tv games
2013 dame: 33-49, 8 national tv games
2012 kyrie: 21-45, 1 national game
2011 blake: 32-50, 6 natl games
2010 reke: 25-57, 3 national games

counting stats / per-game averages are by far the prevalent criterion.

No shit good players on bad teams usually win because good rookies go to bad teams by virtue of the draft setup and bad teams play more rookies than good teams do almost across the board.

Where is your example where Player X has a season like Wiggins or Noel and player Y has a season like Mirotic? This is a relatively singular situation IMHO. As such, I am not buying this as a "trend" because there is no basis for it.

The broader trend, as you mentioned with MVP voting (and DPOY voting and everything else the writers do) is that guys who play in big markets and on good teams and contribute to those teams' success in measurable ways get a boost.

Thank you, g'bless, g'night (c) Sheed.

the burden of proof is on YOU.

YOU said that playing on a contender gives a player an advantage
in RotY race. i'm saying that sounds right in theory, but give me
a case in actual practice where that's helped a guy win the award.

again, i'm not talking about MVP or any other race, i agree that
team record / 'contributing to wins' factors heavily into
those. not RotY tho. records couldn't matter less. precisely for
the reason you mentioned. the best rooks go to bad teams.

i'll go back to andrew wiggins. if he was on cleveland, or the
warriors, or the spurs, he likely wouldn't be starting, he'd be a
defensive specialist, maybe a 4th or 5th scoring option,
he wouldn't be averaging 13 FGAs or 16 ppg, and his RotY case
would be considerably weaker than it is in his current situation.

mirotic playing behind noah and pau and gibson doesn't HELP his
RotY chances. his case was helped when a couple of those guys were
injured / restricted and he got a larger role. SIMILAR TO THE ONE
HE'D HAVE HAD FROM DAY ONE IF HE WERE ON A LOTTERY TEAM.

cmon man, this is common sense. sheesh.

now if chicago had the same record they currently have, and
mirotic was CLEARLY their best player, and viewed by the public as
such, then your point would have some validity and i'd agree with
you 100%. in that case, he'd be the runaway winner. but as things
stand, he's just seen as the 5th or 6th best guy on a really good
team. that doesn't really boost or affect his chances one way or
the other imo, and it doesn't give him any advantage over the guys
on bad teams like wiggins or noel.

Do the math on other ROY's over the past 15 or so years....

The running theme? Good young players on VERY BAD to mediocre teams....

Wiggins is on a bad team...So is Noel...And Bari was on a mediocre team that is overachieving because they believe in their coach and they have some good young kids....

Niko? U can figure out the rest....Dula said it better than me....

you just can't have more games as a starter than as a sub. i think
he's only started 2 or 3 games.

weak year for 6MotY, a bunch of middling candidates like stuckey and
lou willz are right at the top of the list. depending on how he
finishes, mirotic definitely has a shot.

On one hand Wiggins is putting up numbers (and not all that consistently) on a garbage ass team. On the other hand, Mirotic is 25 years old.

Not to be a homer but I think Noel is making his case, you look at his play recently, the offense is coming and the boards/blocks are really steady and really strong.

Wzup with Nurkic? Injured? Havent seen the Nuggs much.

Payton, even more so than Mirotic, has weak ass percentages from the field and 3. He is in the mix though, I guess.

Nah...he just turned 24 last month....

The funny thing is Mirotic would be around the age that the usual rookies would be during the '70's, '80's, 90's, and early '00s....Not his fault that American basketball is heavily 1 and done....

payton's had moments, but those are the only 3 guys in the convo imo.

wiggins will win it, but mirotic has been the best of the 3 by far.
that's borne out both by the stats (significantly higher PER, WS/48,
TS%, etc) and by good old common sense. the guy's 24 and has been
playing professionally against grown men since he was 16. of course
he's a better player at this stage than teenagers.

answering the statement with a question, when was the last time a good team had a player worth a legit look as ROY? usually it's a field of guys with opportunities to fuck up and pad stats on bad teams, because that is where the good rookies go and those are the teams that play rookies.

can someone come up with a situation where a wiggins type got the nod over a mirotic type? i am at a loss. hence i maintain his visibility and contribution to success are in his FAVOR, or at least they don't work AGAINST him. being 24 does though. we had that happen in the NHL a couple years ago, i would say jeff skinner and logan couture were a coin flip for the calder trophy but skinner won because he was a true rookie (19 years old, did not play in the minors at all) and couture was 21 or so, having spent two years in the minor and also having completed his junior career. i thought that was kind of unfair but i guess something had to settle somewhat of a dead heat (skinner also had a little higher point total, though couture had more clutch goals on a better team).

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

In response to Reply # 0

He can handle the ball & shoot/drive like Gallo but he can also bang like Illyasova. His per 36 numbers are also pretty similar to Gallo/Illaysova's numbers at 24.

Disclaimer: Illyasova plateaued after he hit 24 & Gallo got injured at 24 so I'm not saying Niko is on a similar career trajectory, I'm simply comparing him to those two at 24.

WHAT'S GOOD *****? What's REALLY good?!?!????!!! Ha HA!

It ain't that serious, Basa....

I can understand if we were talking about one of the best rookie classes of all time...It's not that...I think Bari and Wiggins will be very good. All-stars and all that. And hopefully Niko will get the playing time to be an all-star as well....

Really, I'm simply saying that Niko has the skills NOW to be better than them both. Anything can happen. Not saying its GOING TO HAPPEN....But I'm looking at how easy Mirotic seems to be able to score especially in the 4th Q...That's all...

So don't worry. I'm not dissing your Dukie boy...I got no interest in that 'GENDA....I'm pulling for your boy to make it back from that injury. He's going to make the Central Div. very interesting...

Like you said, his game is very polished.

The team around him is pretty balanced, so the Bulls don't have to lean on him that much. It seems like Thibs hasn't started giving him major minutes until this month so I'm assuming he's been brought on slowly.

I'm actually surprised that more tall Euros with his build don't come thru and put up numbers like he's done this month but I think what stands out most about him is he seems to have a little nastiness about him.

He has a good future.

It wasn't so much being brought on slowly...he just wasn't getting the playing time because Pau, Taj and the other BIGS were in front of him....

As for the Bulls being decent as the reason Niko has been able to make such a strong late push, I'll just say this. The Bulls have been a MASH unit the entire season. Before Butler came back tonight, Niko was the go-to perimeter player during his impressive scoring run....That means that he was doing work with Noah on restricted minutes dragging his injured leg/knee, no Rose, no Butler, and no Taj Gibson.

So I wouldn't say Mirotic putting in work has much to do with having a decent team around him, beyond a healthy Pau.

Most Euros his size are usually one-dimensional and at times soft. This kid doesn't seem to be neither...

>He has a good future.

Yep...I agree. Although I think he will struggle a bit in the playoffs. NBA defense in the 'offs is an entire different animal. When teams have time to prepare for you shit will get real....

And he's the primary scorer most nights since everyone is hurt. So yeah, the team (when healthy) and coaching staff is good, but he's done most of his damage by himself. He's not sitting in a corner waiting for kickouts and shit. The Bulls rely on him to be a playmaker.

Nikola Mirotic has 148 fourth-quarter points since the All-Star Break, most in the league, per NBA.com. That's 8.2 per game

lol....u are on one!

The truth is Bulls fans have differed from my point of view in this very post. There are some heads who say Niko is rookie of the year THIS SEASON. Others have said he has the tools to be better than this rookie class. Others are saying let's pump the breaks about being a Top 2 Euro statement (which the OP has admitted that post was a bit over the top...)...I mean, the only thing Bulls fans agree totally on with Niko is dude has the skills to be a better than productive player in the league for years to come....an all-star

We not the Borg, homie....lol. Bulls fans don't always have dispute another Bulls fans' view point.....

That said, Niko looked really good last night. Again....

You said it first "pump ya breaks with that one Murph". Besides, NO ONE agreed with Murph's statement. He got not ONE cosign of Niko being the best rookie of the class.

That in and of itself says "I dunno about that one Murph".

>because i know how y'all do...if he by some miracle outplays
>those guys the next couple of years, you just gonna cyse what
>murph said like you were wit it all along.

Nope...we gonna say it in real time: NIKO KILLING ALL THESE FOOLS AND IS CURRENTLY THE BEST DUDE FROM THAT ROOKIE SEASON! (Because he was really drafted in 2011 so I'm actually not sure what we are REALLY discussing. lol) In 5 years if/when they surpass him, we'll say "it was good while it lasted but he still good!"

That's how we do. MURPH will be saying "I KNEW IT ALL ALONG! I CALLED IT!" until the plane crashes if/when it does. No different than how you collect W's early on cysage and L's later or L's early and W's later. You KNOW how this works, you created the format. C'mon B!

>just like when the going was good for that mechanic earlier
>this year...ALL Y'ALL backed them cyses. ALL Y'ALL.

And still do. Jimmy ain't the best 2-way player in the league (Klay is obviously better) but Jimmy had a claim to it early in the season and still is top 2-3 in that regard. Waaaay more than anyone saw coming...including us. (hence why we were so excited) But you ain't never said "I was wrong about Jimmy, he better than I thought."

In the end, MURPH made the rookie class comment and Random made BOTH the Jimmy post and this one. 2 guys.

i hear when you when you say i never said i was wrong about him. the thing is, unlike with rose and those 7 dimes, i never gave a specific threshold for "wrong" with jimmy. i said i don't take him seriously as a #2 scorer and i ain't worried about him as a factor in a series against the cavs. that's it. and i crack jokes about his basic azz game. it's ugly.

so...cry

The irony is I'm one of the guys that disagreed with Butler being better than Klay. I always said Klay offensively is on an entirely different level while Jimmy edges him on D. I said it's closer than what some people would have u believe. But Klay would be my first pick off of offensively consistency alone...

I also wasn't biting on the Big Ben parade that was being thrown...

In fact, I'm about one of the most cautious, sky-is-falling, talk-me-down-from-the-the-ledge, wait-and-see Bulls fan on OKP Sports. The only 'GENDA I've only been hardcore about is D. Rose....I'm also the same dude that recently said the Bulls should go in another direction and break away from the Rose era after the injuries, often time disagreeing with some of the very same Bulls fans up top...

So if brother Basa and the like want to make me look like a loon for saying that a much more mature, polished player from oversees, who is already showing flashes of TAKE-OVER ability, is going to be better than other rookies who at best have been moderately decent to good this season, then hey, I'll wear that dunce cap...lol

In response to Reply # 145

He was better adjusted in his second season, still Nikola's game is more polished than Dirk's was at this point in their careers.

I don't even want to compare Dirk to Niko, because Dirk never really played on the highest Euro level and was not considered the best player at that time. Niko already did that. Dirk skipped that and came right into the NBA because he was a huge prospect. He also had the luxury of Nellie just letting him play to his strenghts. You think he would've blossomed into what he is today playing in Milwaukee under George Karl? He says so himself, he owes a lot to Nellie.

Actually the last dude that I remember that came over that played a similar position and contributed heavy right away was Toni Kukoc. Another player that had plenty experience in Europe before coming over and was considered the best Euro not in the NBA at that time. Tall with great skills and shooting.

And who cares if Niko will be forever better than all those other rookies? He's better now. He played against men for years instead of being the best college kid for a year or two. it's not that much of a surprise. If you consider him a Rookie then give him the award.
I'm cool with giving it to both him and Wiggins like they did in 95 with Hill and Kidd.

Kukoc was a point forward but he's the closest & if we are talking about another 24 yr old Euro then Gallinari at 24 is also a good comparison.

Yeah Gallo has a similar skillset but he was not that good as a rookie tho. He did have injury problems from the start so you never know.

Right now he is getting more responsibility and looking like there is a diminishing marginal return on the quality of his minutes as they increase, if anything.

Again I think he is going to be a solid pro and said so before the season. That said, he has further to go than people seem to think and he's not a teenager.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

i concede the dirk part. also concede the second best euro thing. the L has been accepted.

he ain't bad tho. gonna have a long and fruitful career. needs to put on muscle and not shoot like an idiot but overall he's rounding into form. dude went thru the same growing pains that the rest of the roster experienced. he'll be aight. the progress is there.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

Pretty wild that's the case; also wild how none of the players that were part of that rebuilding effort that challenged the Cavs about 4-5 years ago have anything to do with the current team. Pretty wild, to me at least, how quickly things changed for your Bulls.

As a Bulls fan, at least you can have some levity and hearty laughs at the fact the Knicks are going to be stuck (over)paying Noah for the next three seasons.

the best was the rational idea that saying he could never come close to being top 5 was more ridiculous than saying he could be #2.

and on top of that, why not just say #1? i mean if he could pass a bunch of all-stars, why not dirk also?
