"Yell, Oh Wise...Ye Low Lies...Yellow Eyes"

Once again, the demons have been exorcised. they just dunno what to do other than recite the Gouda God's rezzy when his failures are brought up.

We hear about Kobe losing in the finals.

Bron losing in the finals.

Can I ask a question?

Um, who's the best person Jordan faced in the finals?

simple question. like, i'd REALLY like to discuss this.

Drexler, the third best shooting gaurd of my time, is my pick but I know you shortbus dudes like to pretend he was roughly as good as Joe Johnson, so... you can also pick from Payton/Kemp, Magic, Malone/Stockton...I mean, you know all this already. That's why you are so perturbed.

Outside of Drexler, some good role players and a couple nice talents but that's about it. Drexler took that team further than most could have.

>He was outcoached by Phil, by Chuck Daly and others when it

Okay...those teams were also better. Flat out. But yes also Rick Adelman was not as good of a coach as Pat Riley, Feel and Chuck Daly. Hard to hold his feet to the fire for that.

But what chips do you think they should have won??

He could get you 25 and 12 but if he picked up a ticky tack foul, he would start complaining incessantly...next thing you know, its 3 minutes into the 2nd quarter and he has 3 fouls. He did that consistently, and Adelman never got him to settle down...and it always hurt the Blazers.

25 and 12?? I mean, he had games like that but you couldn't EXPECT that from Duck, fouls or no fouls.

He was a terrible rebounder for his size, out of shape, an awful defender, who could be a very effective offensive player at times but no consistency. He didn't get to the line and shot a mediocre percentage from the field considering his position.

Look at his playoff stats from the years they actually were contenders

89-90 30 MPG 13 points, 5.8 rebounds, 0.6 blocks, 1 Assist, 2.2 TO
90-91 32 MPG 11.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, 0.5 blocks, 1 assist, 2.4TO
91-92 31 MPG 11.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, 0.6 blocks, 2 assists, 2 TO

He was pretty terrible

He wasn't going to be a stopper ever because he was slow...but he created fouls on the offensive end and opened up things for Drexler...but Adelman never coached him to stay in the game...and that imploded things everytime they got deep in the playoffs...even after Uncle Cliffy started blowing up.

That team frustrated me to no end.

Jerry Sloan had a better team and didn't win.

Blazers had one superstar, a good bench, couple wily vets and some talented role players.

I am just amazed that you somehow consider the 89-92 Blazers roster to be some sort of stacked team. And I was mos def a fan.

Maybe had they given some fucking tick to Drazen Petrovic, they could have gotten over the hump. That was dumb shit. If we are roasting Adelman, let's roast him for that.

Drexler was a legit star but he was a James Worthy star, not a Magic Johnson star. Jordan deaded that discussion himself once and for all.

Porter was a good point guard and a good shooter but he wasn't an elite one. He wasn't as good as other also-ran team's point guards (Price, Hardaway, KJ), let alone the heavy hitters (Magic, Zeke, Stockton).

Buck Williams was a helluva PF, maybe aging a little but a truly underrated player.

Duckworth was kind of the missing piece because they had sucked at center. But he was just an average big man, a legit starter but nothing beyond that. I would rank him, again, behind the also-ran guys that came after him like Divac, Sabonis and Smits.

Cliff Robinson was an excellent bench player, I always thought he was overlooked for the 6th man shit (he might have won it one year though).

And they had an older Ainge plus Jerome Kersey who was a nice athletic big. Their parts up front fit together pretty well.

So they won on depth and cohesion but they didn't POP the way the elite teams did. They were the Bills minus Bruce Smith.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

specifically how fucking amazing he would be in today's nba. the modern offense is pretty much tailor made for him.

50/40/90, corner 3s, finish at the rim, create contact at will, ill stepback, pass it a little.

he'd eat good.

didn't they move him for like 30 games of old walter davis? lulz.

Totally agree with you on him thriving in today's game, honestly he had more to show us in the era he played in.

If there was ever a loud-and-wrong quote about his trade demands, it was this one from Rick Adelman:

"Let’s be realistic. Here’s a guy who averaged seven points a game last year. This is not an all-star player. We have a lot of guys playing ahead of him who are very good players. Who’s to say that won’t happen to him somewhere else, too? I think he’s getting some very bad advice.”

Terrible? Choose your words better.

He wasn't the greatest player, but he was far from terrible. If you want to look at why the Blazers never won titles in those years, you could possibly point your finger at Duckworth, saying that if he was just a little bit better, then they could've won. But the reality is that the Blazers were *this* close in 91 and 92 to winning the title. They were clearly the best team in 1991, and while the Bulls were probably better in 92, the Blazers were up 15 points entering the fourth quarter in Game 6 which would've tied the series at 3. They were right there to win either of those years.

Okay.

He just is not anywhere near Clyde Drexler.

Otherwise, yeah good for Joe, I guess.

Joe's 05-09 run was SO damn good

The hawks would have been 0-164 from 05-07 without him. I had season tix those 2 years and went to.prolly 60-70 of the 82 home games.

Id be willing to hear an argument for McGrady, but Joe was a much better shooter And im talking about a specific time periperiod

in Drexler's prime he was 25-27, 6 and 5, shooting near 50% from the field and 79% from the line on a contender in the Lake Show west

In response to Reply # 4

And I mean A LOT.

That would have been intriguing because he was dominant in a way that no center Jordan beat. Shaq was young when they were butting heads (96 Chicago swept them, I think) and Ewing never quite reached Hakeem's level IMHO. In the Finals, they never faced any centers legitimately worth a shit, which was weird.

But the matchup intrigue aside, player for player, the Bulls were better than either team and it's not even close to close.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

let's just look at the HOF'ers he beat to GET to the finals.

this wasn't Bron's Eastern Conference where teams under .500 are getting the 6 seed.

so we got Isiah (your GOD), Dumars, Rodman an' 'nem.

next we got Ewing and the gang.

then we got Shaq (along with Penny, Nick Anderson, Dennis Scott aka they ain't no bums).

then we got Alonzo (along with Dan Majerle, Tim Hardaway, Jamal Mashburn when he was still solid...yeah, not bums)

then Reggie Miller (along with Rik Smits, Jalen, the Davis "twins", Mark Jackson...definitely not bums and the only ones that took them to a game 7 in the ECF).

now that that's out of the way we can add in the Magics, Stocktons, Malones, Barkelys, Paytons, Drexlers, etc. he saw in the finals.

why you clowns try to continue to disparage the GOAT is beyond me.

Yep. Except that after 91 there was no more "an' 'nem". It was just those 3, Salley, and OLD Laimbeer and Aguirre. I mean, they lost to the Knicks in the first round in 92 for gods sake.

>Next we got Ewing and the gang.

What "gang"?

>then we got Shaq (along with Penny, Nick Anderson, Dennis
>Scott aka they ain't no bums).

Failure to launch. That Orlando team had one matchup with the Bulls when both teams were at full strength, and that was only Penny's 3rd year in the league.

>then we got Alonzo (along with Dan Majerle, Tim Hardaway,
>Jamal Mashburn when he was still solid...yeah, not bums)

Again, 1 matchup in 97. And that team was out in the first round the next year.

>then Reggie Miller (along with Rik Smits, Jalen, the Davis
>"twins", Mark Jackson...definitely not bums and the only ones
>that took them to a game 7 in the ECF).

Definitely the most *complete* East team they ever played, if not the most talented.

Let me ask you this, other than the 96 Magic, who else from that group could you actually see as a champion?

knicks, magic and pacers went to the finals themselves so, to answer your question...i could see those teams as champs since they actually had the shot.

the point of the post was to disparage who Jordan faced. i'm putting up evidence that Jordan beat quality teams led by legit HOF'ers in the ECF AND the Finals.

the thing about jordan is you can argue he never lost during his prime

to answer the question though
he faced prime barkley, malone, kemp/payton
barkley and malone both were probably top 3 PFs all time when he faced them

years in which he won championships. In the four seasons before he won his first chip, Jorn won an MVP and DPYY award and averaged:

35.5 points
6.4 boards
6.4 assists
2.95 steals
1.15 block

You'd have to be real pressed to argue those years weren't his prime.

Furthermore I think there is a definite transition Jordan made between about 90 and 92 that definitely kicked off his "prime" in terms of being dominant and being a leader. Let's also not discount Phil Jackson's impact. Stats don't mean everything, look at Wilt. I would argue 1966-1968 were his best years, even though he was obviously putting up ungodly stats in the early 60s. Similar thing there where he challenged himself to do more things and contribute differently to the team's success, and with the help of Alex Hannum.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Jordan won when Pippen made the leap. Jordan, like every other player, needed teammates to win a championship. It's okay, that's no knock, but Jordan was most certainly in his prime in the four seasons before he won his first title.

Traditionally it's believed a player doesn't hit peak until about 25-27 and it lasts roughly 4-6 years. It's the point where your body and IQ should mesh to max out your potential.

88-89 is when he started to put it all together.

Even then that Spurs squad was on it's last legs b/c of the AARP supporting cast; they were basically 2010-11 Lakers status..

I would go w/ Melo in '09 being the best player than Kobe outplayed during the MVPau era 2peat.

He beat Stockton and Malone together. Twice.

He beat Magic like ten minutes after you're partying off Zeke doing it.

Also he tormented Pat Ewing, another HOF'er.

Jordan reached a point where he owned it and didn't let go. That's what separates him from just about everyone, except Bill Russell.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

First is definitely Barkley in his last totally healthy prime season.

Just based on what he was at the time id say next was Shawn Kemp. Unfortunately for the Reign Man, time increasingly paints him in a light that doesn't really reflect what he was at his very short peak.

Team...id say either those Sonics or the Suns. Fuck the default-ass Jazz. Duncan was only a rookie in 98, Webber was still in the East, Kobe and KG were barely 20, Dirk hadnt even been drafted yet.

Malone and Stockton managed to age slower than the rest of their cohort (prolly due to the gentle nature of their prior playoff "runs") and won 2 WCF in the only time period they ever could have.

People are seriously sleeping on how good the Ws are, but that's a topic for another day.

But, yeah, let's continue to ignore that the 95-96 East was not that much better than this year's eastern conference. Let's pretend that those Cavs, Knicks, and Pacers weren't mediocre. Let's just ignore evidence and pay attention to Nike commercials.

The 7 seed in 96 was the Hill/Houston led Pistons. They won 46 games. This years 7 is the Pacers, who's recent tear has them on pace for 36 wins. .500 teams actually MISSED THE PLAYOFFS in the 90's. Stop it.

And that the influx of international players that counteracted that dilution only hit its stride around 2005 is completely irrelevant.

You right. A team with Steve Kerr as the fifth best player would totally win 70 in a conference where Gregg Poppovich and Russell Westbrook currently occupy the 7 and 8 seeds.

We will see where the Warriors end up, but right now I assume that, as they rest guys, they'll end up at about 63-64 wins. Which puts the Bulls at about 66-68. That's a historic seasons and fitting of one of the best teams of all time.

65-70 wins is a reasonable range I suppose. I can't say they'd be a lock to win 70 but certainly not an impossibility.

I think the real question is do we feel like the teams/individual superstars in the west now are more formidable that what that 70 win Bulls teams faced? I think the west a little deeper but it's difficult for me to quantify what that would mean in terms of overall wins.

34. "RE: Wait, on OKS Barkley is greater than Clyde?"
In response to Reply # 27

OKS has no respect for Clyde. I'm really not sure why. He gets side-dissed regularly on here.

In my lifetime it's Jordan, Kobe, Drexler at that position and Wade a whole tier down from Drexler (due to injury, fading so quickly)

At that point is his career Barkley was still a force but I'm taking a CLyde is 92 or whatever year it was.

In response to Reply # 27

Chuck Daly in 1992: Charles Barkley is the second best basketball player on the planet.

Meanwhile Drexler waited to be named to the team.

MVP Voters in 1993: Barkley is the most Valuable Player in the league. Drexler never won the award or even finished all that high in the voting that I can remember.

Barkley was all-NBA 11 times to Clyde's five. You don't want me to tell you about first-team selections, seriously.

I loved both guys, along with Hakeem they were my three favorite players growing up. But Barkley is definitely better than Drexler, like it's not even an argument.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

we are talking about the coach of the dream team and a guy who just played drexler in the finals.

i dont think the bball press overlooked clyde at all, very high profile player out of college and had tons of playoff games on the tube. cmon dude, you are tryna make him out to be dennis johnson on the sonics or something.

Taking the sum of like HS-NCAA-NBA, OK, but as an NBA player he was not as good. I mean are people forgetting how singular Jordan was? We saw this guy, WTF? Definitely the best player in our lifetime and likely the best backcourt player ever. I would rank Wilt ahead of him and only Wilt, even that is arguable. Jabbar I think would be in literally anyone's top five, of course.

Look I ain't one to say Kareem doesn't have a strong argument for GOAT but this statement was just biased.

-By my count, Kareem won 1 title before Erving 'Magic' Johnson came along and he had to squeeze the last of Big O's prime to get that one.

-This despite averaging 60 wins from 1969/70 thru 73/74 playing in a playoff system that included 4 teams and 3 playoff rounds.

-They also went 38-44 in 74/75 before he left for the Lakers.

-The next season, the Lakers went 40-42 with Kareem (no playoffs).

-Lost to the blazers in the 2nd round in 77 (53-29).

-Lost to the sonics in the 1st round in 78 (45-37).

-Lost to the sonics in the 2nd round in 79 (47-35)...with Dantly, Wilkes and Nixon playing most of the season.

-Then they win a coin flip, get the #1 pick in Magic and voila! 60 wins, NBA title.

So we just gonna skate on the first 10 years of Kareem's career like he was gangbusters cuz of fancy stats when he was losing to Bill Walton (in a sweep no less), Rick Barry and a 33yr old John Havlicek? When he couldn't win more than one title with a team putting up no less than 56 wins over 5 seasons and that STARTED before the NBA/ABA merger? So the 70's was golden era basketball with players that son anything the 90's produced huh?

LMMFAO.

If we are gonna seriously have a discussion about GOAT, you asshats can't just tout opinion and romanticized memories of your heroes. You have to condemn similar failures. And place similar stats/successes side by side. Critique eras the same way.

Kareem got Worthy and Magic and won 5 more titles. You put Dream and Dominique on Jordan's team (comparable talent to worthy and Magic) and I'm going with Jordan's team.

Kareem at 38
23.4/6/3.5/1.6 blks
Jordan at 38
22.9/5.7/5.2/1.4 stls

Kareem at 39
17.5/6.7/2.6/1.2
Jordan at 39
20/6.1/3.8/1.5 stls

PER's are comparable (22.7 & 17.9 vs 20.7 & 19.3)

And Jordan was 8 inches shorter.

Zeke didn't when compared to Jordan. I know it hurts but at least that 3-1 works because he had a better team. So you can hang your hat there.

Jordan better...than both of them.

You siding with obvious slander BTW.

The arguments here against MJ are...weak era (90's), lost to pistons (3-1), didn't beat any great teams.

Then Kareem gets propped over him due to those arguments.

My counters:

-90's >>>> 70's
-Kareem had easier routes to the finals for 10 yrs and got 1 ring playing with Big O to boot and didn't beat any GREAT teams during that time.
-He got sonned by lesser players with better TEAMS (which somehow doesn't hurt Kareem's legacy but does MJ's? Really?)
-Kareem only won with HOF help (actually more help than MJ had) and MJ STILL matched his title run and actually dominated the league more than Kareem did.

If we are comparing...let's compare. This isn't to tear down Kareem but let's make the argument real not just 'I like Kareem more'.

Make a legit case for Kareem over Jordan as the GOAT pro basketball player.

-He quit against the Pistons in the playoffs
-He quit (retired) twice before really retiring
-The Wizards stint
-Bulls doing well in the reg season after his first retirement (though this one is overblown)
-AI Crossover lol
-3-1 to the Pistons

^^^Those are the WORST things about MJ's career. But a few of those are defensible (Wizards stint = old and still balled, Bulls lost in the playoffs without him that season too, Pistons had a better team/lack of help). Anything else is just whining by those with agendas/still butthurt from 90's heart break.

Just like I'm sure there's SOME defense to the negative stuff about Kareem's career I noted. The point is, if you making a point, carry it across everybody and not just who you like less. If not winning with less help matters, it matters, if missing the playoffs matters, it matters, if playing while old matters, it matters, if losing to a team repeatedly matters, it matters.

There was a period he fell into a rut for sure and I think Magic reignited his passion and desire. But you look at when he came into the league, he was a force and a fucking half. Plus he ended up playing so long that a few subar or forgettable seasons didnt really factor into his legacy, except for giving us some "what if?" years.

Hakeem had a down period, lots of guys had some injuries, etc.

I'd put Jordan just ahead of Kareem, but it's close.

I don't disagree with any of this. My point here is, they are trashing Jordan's resume and crowning Caps like he didn't have the exact lull you just confirmed. Cap needed help to win (big O, Magic, Worthy, et al) it's cool. Jordan needed help to win it's 'he didn't beat any of the greats of the 80's'. Welp, Kareem won ONE title in the 70's because Big O was JUST young enough to squeeze one out. Minus big O and he goes 0 for the 70's. Stats be damned. MJ put up 28/6/6 his ROOKIE year. Ain't like he didn't start out gangbusters too. It just took the Chicago franchise 4 yrs to get him comparable help and it took those guys 3 yrs to develop.

>I'd put Jordan just ahead of Kareem, but it's close.

And I whole heartedly agree. Kareem is a solid #2 on my alltime list and it's very close to MJ.

I think overall we agree that Kareem's career had ups and downs. I'd argue more than MJ's, probably would, too. That's where we agree.

I would put Wilt above both and he's No. 3 or worst on your list.

I hate the catch-all "help to win" thing. Sure, in the sense that every player that has ever won anything had help. Furthermore, no one player was going to dominate in those eras, guys like Jordan and Pete Maravich proved it. In the case you brought up, it really doesn't even apply in the way it would in less ridiculous but still absurd arguments (e.g. LeBron, Kobe). Robertson was kind of like Drexler coming to Houston for Hakeem, in fact that might be slightly generous. Hakeem arguably did more with Drexler than he did without him the year before. Similarly, there aren't many teams, even less competitive ones, that leaned on a player more than the Bucks leaned on Jabbar. Jabbar scored 1000 more points than Robertson in the title-winning season. The next year his production kept going up and Robertson's went down, to where he comfortably doubled him up. I don't want to take anything away from Oscar or Bobby D, but Kareem was Michael and they were Titos.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Those are just the HOF'ers, if you want we can go into the all-stars, too.

I think "the best person" is the wrong question. He did dominate an era watered down by expansion, but he dominated the fuck out of it.

And why don't his failures get brought up? Well generally he wasn't losing series where he was favored and once he hit the pinnacle, he was essentially unbeatable (yes the first comeback didn't result in a chip right away). He was also the clear alpha on all his teams. So there are definitely some differences there between his shit and Kobe/Bron, which should be very obvious.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

And they were a Magic/Divac hot streak away from 3 straight trips.

They were ready to win by the time they saw the bulls.

Orlando had Finals experience and so did the Lakers.

The first thing that comes to mind abt that series is that Portland split the gms w/Detroit and afterwards Drexler infamously said "we're not coming back to Detroit" and after the series they brought it up to Isiah what Clyde had said and his response was "well...he was right" LOL

Portland still wasn't a GREAT team tho...very talented but you could say they underachieved

They also blew the series vs the Lakers in th WCF in 1991 which is how Magic/Lakers made it to the finals that year

>And they were a Magic/Divac hot streak away from 3 straight
>trips.
>
>They were ready to win by the time they saw the bulls.

things I learned from this post the 90s were the worst era of basketball, I mean just the years of 91-98, and only those and all the fake HOFs it produced

it's just ironic that ya'll wanna call the suns etc. trash while bigging up another guy who faced even less in the finals.
this was not a 6 year Finals run against the 01/02 Pacers/Nets.
shit don't matter to me anyway because it's some dumbass tennis argument that just doesn't work that way and even if it did, the players were legit.
what you don't get is the Pistons were good enough because of their talent and the way they played.
same goes for the 90s Bulls. obviously better than the late 80s Pistons but you'd have to know a thing or two about basketball to be able to judge that.

The Blazers were the Buffalo Bills of the NBA and easily the best team of the bunch. What happened there was Jorn deading any and all comparisons to any other SG in the L.

The Suns could have won against a weak opponent for sure, Barkley was playing his nuts off and they had a little depth. They were not a great team though.

The Sonics had probably the most talent but they squandered it. Payton was just entering his prime. Kemp was not an ideal leader of men. George Karl was severely outcoached. On paper they had the best shot but not really, they were pretty wet behind the ears out there against a group of men.

Again though, this would only take away from the Bulls if they struggled against these teams or lost to them. You beat the team in front of you, right?

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

beating great teams....beating great players..

its' actually not even close...

but this may not be an argument you want to be making considering the Lakers lost their backcourt due to injury in the finals against the Pistons in Game 1....leading up to that series the Lakers were undefeated in the playoffs that season..

"*"

but the Blazers were a really good team..

that there are always "what ifs?" for 29 NBA teams a season and then a million things that work in the favor of the team that won. so if someone (specifically basa in this case) wants to go down that road, prepare for it to get messy and for your heroes to be dissected the same way. it's all pointless.

he was better than MJ for those couple years.

but considering Zeke beat THAT lakers team and the wack Portland team you're discounting Jordan for, it doesn't add anything to your Zeke agenda.

So Zeke won 2 fraudulent titles and MJ won 6 fraudulent ones right?

You ain't gotta sip from the GOAT fountain, but spitting mistruths and discounting his legacy because you refuse to, I just gotta call BS. Almost errytime I see it fam.

to get to a washed up lakers team and a wack Portland team is what you're hanging Zeke's head on?

Because if Jordan beat trash and didn't win until everybody was washed up, the by relation his title teams were trash too.

Lol @ you thinking the 87-88 Celtics weren't washed (whole starting 5 was 30+ outside of Ainge). The whole atlantic division was buttcheeks and they won their games based on that alone (not one team was above .500).

So again, Zeke's legacy is beating washed up and trashy teams if Jordan's is. But Jordan did it more times.

Cool.

Magic was MVP in 89 and 90, and it's like some in here think he was washed up in 91 or something? Drexler? SMH.

Magic was still Magic. Him and Michael were the two best in the league at that point and that was a heavily hyped up finals matchup. Worthy got hurt, which made it easy on the Bulls.

It's clearly Magic, followed by Barkley who became the 2nd best player in the league when Magic retired.
