Venus Williams schools glaring opponent after close three-set win

By: CHRIS CHASE 18 hours ago

Venus Williams is a boss. There’s no other way to put it. At 34 and playing her best tennis in a half-decade, Williams won a hard-fought three-setter over Barbora Zahlavova-Strycova in Qatar, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (5).

It was a contentious final set, with BZS complaining about some accurate challenge calls by the seven-time Grand Slam champion. When she lost the final-set tiebreak, she was clearly displeased, which led to this exchange at the net, in which the Czech player stared down Venus who was having exactly none of it. (As always, click the volume button in the lower-right corner to turn on Vine sound.)

As they both went to shake the hand of the chair umpire, Venus called out her opponent on the glare.

Venus: Was that look for something?

Barbora: Well done?

Venus: Okay, good.

Like I said: Venus Williams = boss.

The match ended past 1 a.m. local time. Venus catches a break in that she won’t have to play on Wednesday, but things won’t be easy on Thursday, when the world No. 17 will play the winner of Aga Radwanska (No. 8) and Flavia Pennetta (No. 16) in the quarterfinals. The American will be the underdog no matter who wins … as long as no one stares her down.
