"WTF...NFL investigating possibility that Patriots deflated footballs"
Mon Jan-19-15 01:24 AM by FILF

http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2015/1/19/7834065/patriots-deflated-football-afc-championship-penalty

The New England Patriots came away with a 45-7 win against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, but the NFL will investigate the footballs used in that AFC Championship victory. The NFL will investigate whether the Patriots deflated footballs used in the game, according to Bob Kravitz of WTHR.com.

According to Kravitz a violation for deflated footballs would not impact the outcome of the AFC Championship, but the Patriots could lose draft picks. Kravitz reported officials took a ball out of play during the game and weighed it. According to NFL rules, home teams are required to provide 36 balls for outdoor games and make the balls available for testing with a pressure gauge prior to the game.

WHAT'S GOOD *****? What's REALLY good?!?!????!!! Ha HA!

If something was that out of wack they would have replaced the football. They do the same thing if the football is too wet which I'm sure happened quite a bit since it was raining.

they'll know if something is off with the footballs man.. They switch out footballs all the time... If the officials didn't catch it to me that means the footballs were acceptable to use.

I heard Dilfer talk about it and he said the ball can vary by about a pound or so...

It's whateva....I just think this is Patriots hate bait.. lol

In response to Reply # 30

RBs prefer a deflated ball b/c it easier to hold onto especially in wet conditions. The Pats were running the ball much more than they were throwing it & the Colts had a nonexistent running game so deflating it would be to the Pats advantage.

In response to Reply # 30

Like, he was surprised Rodgers liked an over-inflated ball, suggesting that just about every other quarterback would prefer a softer ball for better grip.

Plus, the deflated, easier-to-hold ball would be an advantage for NE's running game, as suggested above.

"No, he pumps them up MORE which most people don't like" is not an effective argument.

Although I think the key difference here is that they are looking to see if the Patriots deflated the ball AFTER the refs had checked them. Which is different from what Rodgers said; he said he overinflated them and hoped they passed inspection.

>Plus, the deflated, easier-to-hold ball would be an advantage
>for NE's running game, as suggested above.

The much maligned DeMarco Murray has a total of 13 fumbles in his career on 934 carries meanwhile Blount has 13 fumbles on just 704 carries.

Considering the conditions were wet & that Belichick's game plan was using Blount to bulldoze the Colts D-line to submission it won't be far fetched to claim it was to the Pats advantage to deflate the ball especially against a team which had a nonexistent running game.

Belichick is caught cheating multiple times and he will still go in the HOF. However, Barry Bonds is accused of cheating and won't get into the HOF. Yet you can't name 3 players better than Barry Bonds when he was in the game.

Is that about right?

I know its different sports, but still.

11 of 12 Pats' footballs under-inflated
By Chris Mortensen | ESPN.com
Updated: January 20, 2015, 11:09 PM ET

The New England Patriots had 11 of their 12 allotted game footballs under-inflated by 2 pounds of air (PSI) as required by NFL regulations, according to league sources either involved or familiar with the investigation of Sunday's AFC championship game when the Patriots beat the Colts 45-7 to advance to their sixth Super Bowl.

"We are not commenting at this time," said Greg Aiello, the NFL's senior vice president of communications.

Troy Vincent, the league's senior executive vice president of football operations, said earlier Tuesday that the NFL expected to wrap up its investigation in "two or three days."

Yet to be determined is what, if any, penalties may be imposed upon Patriots. One source described the league as "disappointed ... angry ... distraught," after spending considerable time on the findings earlier Tuesday.

Part of the investigation that still needs further vetting is how the 11 footballs became under-inflated. The game balls provided to each team for preparation were required to be inspected and approved by referee Walt Anderson two hours and 15 minutes before kickoff before they were returned to each team. No alteration of footballs is allowed once they are approved, under league rules and regulations.

The balls are required be inflated between 12.5 and 13.5 pounds per square inch and weigh between 14 and 15 ounces.

"We have been in complete cooperation with the league and will continue to do so," said Patriots spokesman Stacey James.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

In response to Reply # 0

the balls passed the initial inspection. do the refs/league not keep the submitted balls until gametime? i think i read they get the balls on friday. seems like a refs/league issue no?

unless the pats just deflated them shits on the sidelines during the game. in which case i have to applaud the brazenness of the operation

That's what happened with USC when they got busted although the ref caught it during the game.

I mean, there's a lot to hope for in terms of the investigation but it seems like the balls passed inspection and then were below regulation. The cold can cause some issues but I'm also pretty sure they try to keep the footballs warm on the sideline.

It especially sucks because it was completely unnecessary.

They in fact just couldn't tell the difference after handling them every play, then another thing is maybe the legal range should be expanded. Beyond that, I'm not even fully sure why teams can't have their footballs inflated/deflated to whatever they like anyway. If both teams were allowed to do it, what would be the issue? I'm digressing though.

Honestly, I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around all these refs handling he balls evey play and not noticing anything, and then a player who never touches the football suddenly being like "this one feels different"

But whatever. Maybe...

it's being reported

that the deflated ball issue actually came up earlier in the year

in the NE @ IND regular season game

and was reported to the league

also, it is being reported that the balls were then inflated at half time

so somebody knew this was going on during the game

the whole thing is very strange.

got the heads-up in the first half, and I think they had the Pats switch to a backup batch for second half, but not sure on that. Also, I think they let play go on with OG balls for rest of first half after they were made aware.

How long has Brady's footballs bent rules like this? Probably years, just like Rodgers and a bunch of other QBs.

I believe it was the Saltimore Ravens who Bubblezed on them right? Nuff said

We're assuming it was done after the refs approved the game balls.

We're assuming that the refs even really check the game balls before approving.

We're assuming that the Patriots are the only team doing this.

It's all pretty stupid. My guess is that every team does this to some extent, but everyone hates the Patriots so they get snitched on when other teams wouldn't. The Patriots are shady, no doubt but the other teams are whiny bitches.

Rule 3. If you cheat and get caught, don't get caught cheating again.

If you already know you've gotten caught cheating and you have a target on your back,(bc everyone else is whiny bitches) maybe you should stop cheating.

The Patriots are stupid for doing this. They were going to thump the Colts any way. Why even bother with is? Now instead of talking about how impressive they looked, we're talking about some under-inflated balls.

There are plenty of stories out there about teams messing with game balls. I heard something on the radio this morning about how this happens everywhere whoever the source of the quotes was has worked. Everyone does it and no one ever says anything. Like all of the stupid unwritten rules of baseball.

So why wouldn't the refs check the game balls? because maybe they never do. We all have jobs (supposedly). I'm sure we all have tasks that we're supposed to be doing routinely that almost always get skipped and then skipping that task becomes the routine. I don't know. I'm not there to witness any of this and am also making assumptions, but maybe actually weighing and checking the games balls before a game is something that refs just don't do. They just place the check mark in the box and keep moving. Just because it's written as what they are supposed to do, doesn't mean they are doing it.

And the link somewhere else in this thread about the heating up of the game balls during the Vikings (my favorite team) game can be relative to this situation. They were messing with the balls during the game. Where was the outrage then?

Yeah, you are the one making wild assumptions at this point. It's the AFCCG. Maybe they didn't do it, but that stretches credulity.

Vikings were fined by the league, were they not?

Also there is something much sneakier and insidious about deflating all your game balls than there is about heating up the balls on the sideline on a cold day.

Regardless, Vikings got punished and deservedly so.

It's patently absurd.

Per the NFL rulebook, a tampering with footballs violation carries with it a $25k fine. Hardly an NFL felony. But it's the Patriots so the media is blowing it up meaning Goodell will probably have to do something more than that. Even though there's been two reported incidents of people talking about tampering with footballs THIS SEASON that went fucking ignored. Because it wasn't the Patriots.

There's tampering with the balls BEFORE the ref check and there's tampering with ball AFTER it's already been checked. The latter is a step beyond the former and circumventing that referee assessment.

Are you surprised that a team which has been caught cheating before (particularly when consider it was in games of the greatest magnitude) and gets caught again for doing something illegal (again, in a game of great magnitude) is going to create a huge uproar?

...that the refs didn't miss something before the game. If Rodgers is claiming he's gotten away with over-inflating balls and getting them past the refs' pre-game inspection, who's to say the Pats didn't do the same thing (only underinflating)? There's no proof (yet) that the Pats had the right PSI pre-game then doctored the balls afterwards (that I know of, at least..if I missed that let me know). Maybe the refs just missed it (like they have with Rodgers' footballs) and it was brought to their attention later.

Like many/most Patriots fans', I'm mad at nobody but whoever on the Patriots sanctioned thisbecause (a) it was totally unnecessary and (b) gives morons like you all more fodder to try and call into question their greatness.

But, as always, this type of shit is NOT why they win and they are NOT the only team doctoring footballs. They're just under a constant microscope forever because they keep winning and they had cameras in the wrong areas in 2006 and previous.

What do you Pats fans not understand about the difference between overinflating a ball BEFORE inspection, hoping it passes AND tampering with the balls after inspection.

The pats are being accused of deflating the ball after its been approved by the refs. So no, if that did in fact happen, its not the same as what Aaron did/does. not even close.

might want to try a little harder cover that up.

So, tampering with footballs and "hoping the refs don't notice" isn't cheating. But, (allegedly) tampering with balls after the refs check them pre-game (or perhaps before...clearly they didn't notice during the first half) IS cheating. Got it.

You people are actually hilarious and I feel sorry for you.

In response to Reply # 141

Its up to the refs to approve or fix the balls.

>So, tampering with footballs and "hoping the refs don't notice" isn't cheating. But, (allegedly) tampering with balls after the refs checked them pre-game (or perhaps before...clearly they didn't notice during the first half) IS cheating. Got it

Has rodgers ever been punished for overinflating the balls? They have definitely got 'caught' doing it, whether they got warned, disciplined and punished for it will tell you if it falls under cheating.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

If Ray Rice really beat the piss out of his fiance on that elevator, Goodell will suspend him accordingly and will absolutely not pay a favor to his friend in the organization and try and sweep it under the rug. Oh wait ....

Again, your bias is showing and my kids are in the room. Please have some decency.

Yes, it did. What A-Rod did is legal because it was BEFORE the refs inspect the balls!!!!!

that if he over-inflates the balls, and the refs just happen not to catch it, HOW IS THAT NOT STILL FUCKING CHEATING?! The rule says it's supposed to be X PSI. Rodgers has his balls at Y PSI. The refs miss it.

HOW IN THE HOLY FUCK IS THAT NOT CHEATING?!?!?!?!

The refs didn't catch the Pats until halftime. THE PATS WERE STILL CHEATING BEFORE HALFTIME.

And what's funny about all this is that they actually dominated the Colts EVEN FURTHER once the tampering was found and dealt with.

But anyway ----- cheating is cheating whether or not you get caught. So no, the ARod argument was ABSOLUTELY NOT proven wrong. You guys just refuse to acknowledge that cheating is cheating, whether or not you get caught. And this type of shit happens ALL THE TIME.

Did this happen? And if it did, it would be against the spirit of the rules BUT not illegal. Which is a distinction that cannot possibly be lost on a Pats fan.

Because the rulebook says that is fine.

If you mess with the balls after referee inspection, you cheated. Those are the rules. Sorry they are not some other rules that you clearly wish existed.

Is it against the rules to overinflate the balls prior to referee inspection?

Is it?

DOGG - the fucking RULES that you keep referencing, the RULES state that a game ball needs to be X PSI. The balls Rodgers uses are doctored so they are Y PSI and the refs miss it. The refs miss it, but the RULES are still being fucking broken.

THAT IS CHEATING. YOU ARE A FUCKING MORON.

Where does it say overinflated balls made it into competition?

Where does it say that it's illegal to tamper with them BEFORE ref inspection?

Those are literally THE RULES!!!!

Last week, everyone was laughing at Harbaugh because he "needs to get a rulebook", and now, suddenly, the specifics of the rules are unimportant?

The Patriots got caught cheating. Blatantly.

Show me where I said that. In this instance, it appears they certainly did.

But what's frustrating is that, just because it's the Patriots, this is blowing up into a massive story...when JUST THIS YEAR two other instances of football tampering have come up and gone ignored. That's frustrating. Yet when presented with that evidence, you idiots are like "welllll butttttttt THE PATRIOTS CHEATED" and that's that.

Well then, everyone else did too. Why aren't we calling for McCarthy to be suspended for a year? What about The Vikings/Panthers game? Etc.

The media blows it up because it's the Pats, and people like you all react like it's the most egregious offense in NFL history. It's blatant bias.

No. And I am going to be extra clear here:

We pointed out that the Vikings were punished by the league (although what they were doing is less insidious, it was definitely breaking the rules)

We also pointed out that what the Packers did is completely legal and thus NOT CHEATING. It seems to go against the spirit of the rules but hey, so do the Patriots ineligible receiver plays. Neither of them are actually ILLEGAL.

>
>Well then, everyone else did too. Why aren't we calling for

McCarthy DID NOT BREAK ANY RULES AS FAR AS WE KNOW. YOU ARE ALLOWED TO DO WHATEVER YOU WANT TO THE BALL PRIOR TO INSPECTION

PATRIOTS HAVE A HISTORY OF CHEATING AND WERE PLAYING IN THE AFCCG. IS IT THAT HARD TO WRAP YOUR HEAD AROUND????

When Josh Gordon got suspended again everyone was like, yeah WTF is wrong with this guy BECAUSE he has a long history of this. Same with Suh's stomp on Rodgers. It's not complicated. Suh stomps on someone in the field of play during the NFCCG its a bigger story than if Larry English does it during a week 7 loss to the Browns.

These cats really think that they are somehow victims of their own success, and everyone is just out to GET THEM.

Giants have won two SB's since the last time Pats won. Matter fact, it's been a long, long time since the Patriots won a title but somehow every player, referee and league official is out to get them, in some sort of jealousy fueled jeremiad against the Patriots winning culture.

like literally they suspended him ostensibly for failing to control his organization and allowing it to happen. They didn't have any indication that Sean Payton was in any way responsible for the execution of bounties for injuries, but because they made a whole dog and pony show they needed to string someone up at the end otherwise they'd look dumb.

Because the truth is the players wanna hit. What coach in the world would coach his players against hitting? Yet Payton sat out a year over it.

But anyway, yeah, it's idiotic to speculate about any of it (your "the equipment manager is so far below the coach" quip as well).

damage to the 'shield' if the pats won the SB.

I think we'll see a hefty fine and loss of multiple picks.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

Just get it over with. Aint nothing worse for a fan than to have to defend some shit like this leading into the Super Bowl and having to live it down in general. It really ticks me off for real. I would prefer they suspend him the Super Bowl and the 2015 season and lose picks. Just drop the boom.

In response to Reply # 120

If you see a formation you don't understand, you call a timeout. You don't let it happen a few times and then rush out and get a 15 yard penalty even though the refs literally said, "Don't cover 34" and the Ravens defense still did.

This is a different issue entirely.

harbaugh was some bs...this was legit. Public and okp reaction is reflecting that. Some pats fans are playing the 'victim' card.

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/writer/jason-la-canfora/24981269/some-baltimore-ravens-think-footballs-were-under-inflated-vs-patriots

While the balls are supplied by the home team, the Ravens would have kept their footballs on their sideline, no? Also, how would the kicker not have been able to tell when they went out there. The Colts supposedly could tell during an interception.

If the Ravens have a problem, it would seem that the footballs that the refs okayed before the game were underinflaed. In that case, it's exactly I'd say the error is on the side of the refs.
