I mean, this is an unprecendented run of all-time QB play.

UNINTERRUPTED.

IN A SO_CALLED QB LEAGUE.

i just want some context within which to understand this apparent anomaly.

It's the same in the NBA. Team that can get stops when they need it most are the ones that win chips. Teams that fight fire w/ fire end up losing at the end.

If a QB is having a bad day (which happens often times against championship level defense aka playoffs) then the team is cooked. But if you have an elite defense than can keep the game close then the team always has a chance. Just look at Eli/Flacco/Dilfer & even Russell; one thing they all have in common is an elite defense. Warner/Peyton/Brees/Rodgers had to play at a high level every game to pull out wins, when they didn't they lost.

It's tough to play at a high level every game in the postseason which is why Warner/Peyton/Brees/Rodgers have only one chip. Basically, teams need a boarderline elite QB (Big Ben) & an elite defense to create a dynasty.

Rodgers won three playoff games in his run to the SB and only played "elite ball" in one of them against a Falcons team that was basicallly wet toilet paper.

I dunno if you consider that GB defense to be elite or not. I dont.

Okay. So the problem is Green Bay hasn't had a great defense much these past quarter century?

GB actually had a very good defensive team in 2010 so he didn't need to play lights out. He took care of the ball, kept the chain moving & scored points in the red zone.

>I dunno if you consider that GB defense to be elite or not. I
>dont.
They had the 2nd best ranked defense in the ENTIRE league. They weren't the 2000 Ravens but nor were the 1st ranked defense (the same Steelers team they beat in the SB).

>Okay. So the problem is Green Bay hasn't had a great defense
>much these past quarter century?
I can't tell you that off the top of my head but both the 96 & '10 squad were pretty legit on the defense side of the ball (they ranked 1st & 2nd in the regular season).

Basically, BOTH Favre/Rodgers have never won w/o a top ranked defense. As we all witnessed today, the Packers defense couldn't get stops in the 4th quarter to seal the deal & they ended up losing.

WHAT'S GOOD *****? What's REALLY good?!?!????!!! Ha HA!

Some clarifications: SB year they were 2nd in points allowed and 5th in yards.

They did go 15-1 the year after, the best reg season record in team history.

But in support of your argument, they were 31st ranked defensive team. On the other side, Packers were 14th in points allowed, which is not terrible. And Rodgers threw a pick and fumbled twice in the playoff game they lost at home to Giants.

So the defense argument has some truth in it but by the same token maybe the Packers just didn't get to play Caleb Hanie and Matt Ryan to get to the SB.

They can't blame the defense this year!

Or last year for that matter.

In the last 25 years there have been 5 QBs that arent or wont be HOF, probably 6 including Eli, who won a Super Bowl

>2014 NE is 13th
Haven't even played in the SB yet & almost lost to the Ravens w/ Flacco wetting the bed in the 2nd half. The Colts offense was basically Luck going up against the entire Pats defense so that game is irrelevant.

>2013 denver 19th
Got crushed in the SB when their elite QB had a bad day.

>2012 ravens 17th
C'mon..they were a team full of vets that were banged up in the regular season (esp Ray-Ray) which is why they were mediocre.
The Ravens defense was a different animal in the postseason:
-They shutout the Pats in the 2nd half (the Pats were still one of the top ranked offenses even during the period after they lost Gronk b/c of Hernandez)
-Pro-bowler Luck had fellow pro-bowler Wayne & a rising TY at his disposal but he was held out of the end-zone along w/ the entire Colts' offense.
-They also held Peyton in check for the most part, it was their specials team that kept getting burnt by Holiday.
-49ers had nothing but a bunch of FGs before the lights went out. Most importantly, the defense came up w/ the TWO biggest play of the game when they stopped the 2 point conversion attempt followed by stopping the 49ers in the red-zone during a potential game winning drive.

>2011 giants 27th
See comments under Ravens 2012

>2009 saints 25th
Already acknowledged but even then they were a pretty good pass rushing defense & had two pro-bowler in the secondary which came in handy against Warner/Peyton. They just sucked at defending against the run.

>2006 colts 21st
Already acknowledge but they were lucky to face washed up Trent Green/McNair along w/ Grossman. Peyton only really had to carry them against the Pats during the postseason b/c the rest of the opposition were pretty anemic on offense.

The #1 & #2 ALL-TIME ranked offenses (2006-7 Pats / 2013-14 Broncos) were defeated by teams that didn't have any pro-bowl QBs (Eli & Russell) at the helms but just happened to have had an elite defense. Pro-Bowler Brady couldn't beat the 2014 Broncos & Rivers w/ FOUR Pro-Bowler just on offense couldn't beat the 2007 Pats.

By your logic the 1994-5 Rockets were average just b/c of their regular season record. They only swept Shaq/Penny in the Finals just like the '11 Giants & '12 Ravens shut Brady's bitch ass up. If Brady got shut down by two average defenses in the muphuckin' Super Bowl then he should never be mentioned in the same breath as Montana.

The 2007 Giants weren't an elite regular season defense either but they held the #2 all-time ranked offense to 7 points until the latter end of the 4th quarter...7 muphuckin' point!

it's a QB league, but there are also more elite and just-under-elite level QBs than they're were in Favre's day.

Rodgers is looking like Payton in the 'offs

Got outgunned by a retirement-home Kurt Warner.

15-1...lose at home to Eli

Two losses to Kaep at home.

Now choked away another big regular season.

It's really hard to win Super Bowls, and having a goat QB also means he's taking up a huge cap hit. Unless you got a GOAT coach as well, it's tough.

Do you think that Rodgers playing poorly in ever NFCCG is part of the organization's problem getting over the hump?

You can't come out and put up a 55 rating with multiple interceptions every chip game and say you are the best...can you?

I ask because that is what's happening

When was Aaron Rodgers last truly great playoff performance against a strong opponent?

I ask because he really did not do anything this game.

Or in the games against Kaep.

Okay, I could see that.

For the record, on that playoff run he

barely beat (21-16) a 10-6 Eagles team that would go 8-8, then 4-12 in the following years. Reid was done after this basically.

legitimately blew out a kinda-decent-but-far-from-finished-product Atlanta team that would score only two points against the Giants in their trip to the playoff the next year.

squeezed by a Bears team belmed by Caleb Hanie that would never make the playoffs again, and whose coach would soon be fired (unjustly) and just had the league's worst record this season.

So he had one really great playoff game and a good SB that year.

Since that year, he has not had a single notworthy postseason performance.

Rodgers playoff performances have been meh.

Green Bay has had an incredible run at QB and it has yielded no better results than those of lesser QBs in less time. It's worth noting.

I count 25 of dem bitches, out of a possible 31:

SEA
PHI
SF
CHI
OAK
WSH
MIN
DET
SD
BUF
CLE
HOU
NO
MIA
NYJ
ARI
IND
ATL
CAR
CIN
TB
KC
JAX
TEN
STL

Then you have PIT, NYG, DEN, BAL and DAL with two each since Favre's arrival in Green Bay. That brings up to 30 out of 31.

So in about 22 years, ONE franchise has won more championships. ONE.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

The Packers have seldom if ever had a defense like Baltimore's and maybe once had a complete team like New England and the Steelers had in their title years. That goes to show the importance of the QB position to me. Largely on their strength at one position they have been as successful as literally ANY other franchise during that time span with a lone exception (NE, who also has had 15 years of HOF QB play plus Bledsoe before that). On top of that, they have been very competitive in years where they haven't one. This is just a hating-ass post. You'd fuck a whole stable full of donkeys in the ass for the Bears to have FIVE years of HOF QB play. I mean, the more I think about it, the more ironic this post is, given that the Bears haven't had a QB worth a shit since Sid Luckman and managed to waste the careers of tons of great players at other positions. Don't nobody remember the steps to the Super Bowl shuffle 30 years on, bruh.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

The Bears are terrible. Why even bring them up in a post about what, I am told, is one of the NFL's greatest organizations, top-to-bottom?

When someone starts talking about Spygate does anyone bring up the Jaguars futility?

When questioning Peyton Manning's postseason failures, is it relevant to start talking about the Tennessee Titans lack of playoff wins?

Aaron Rodgers has been terrible in three straight NFCCG.

FLAT OUT TERRIBLE

If the Packers organizational goal was to be better than the Bears, then of course, this post would be pointless. I am working off the assumption that the Green Bay Packers have the bar set a little higher than that but hey, what do i know?

Do people not take Peyton to task for not winning more titles?

Did Irsay not say they should have won more than one?

Does Rodgers inability to perform at a high level in the playoffs have no significance? Because Peyton is fried for it regularly.

Aaron Rodgers is too risk-averse to win big playoff games.

http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/skeptical-football-the-aaron-rodgers-enigma/

It's the reason they flop every postseason when facing actual title contenders.

Can't play against Caleb Hanie every time. Even in that game, Rodgers didn't put many points on the board, BJ Raji had to win the game.

Let's talk about it.

I have no intention of waiting until the Bears are competitive to ask questions about what defines "elite" QB's (which Rodgers surely is) and how that translates into postseason success or championship seasons.

The Bears are garbage. To quote Mssrs. Claw, "let's move on"

Yes. Also hopefully if we did, the team wouldn't lose in the exact same way every postseason.

Rodgers wants another ring he better be praying for Caleb Hanie to get a starting job again,

the media overblows it and a lot of individual guys are way overrated based on stats that they accumulate almost by default. but any coach at any level knows his QB is his bread, butter, meat, potatoes, pastry and foie gras. a line, a defense, yes, these are very important things but they function as units. the QB as an individual is unsurpassed in what he does on a team. honestly one could argue it's the most important position in any sport and that's really remarkable given the size of football rosters and how many players take the field at once. i think a basketball star can and often does have more impact, but he doesn't have to play one particular position. once in a while a goalie in hockey carries his team in a unique way, but a lot of the best had limited success in terms of winning it all.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Yeah but in the postseason an elite D usually beats an elite QB

The fact that both of them were injured this year should absolve them both of a full out assault.

HOWEVER, to compare Aaron Rodgers' playoff struggles to Peyton is laughable.

My biggest and undisputed knock on Peyton has never been his won-loss record, but how poorly he's played in games where just a mediocre or good performance would have made a difference. When the majority of the money and attention is devoted to one side of the ball, to perform as poorly as he has in the biggest moments is a glaring shortcoming.

Aaron Rodgers has had some nice players on offense, but he never even had the same caliber of weapons Favre played with for the majority of his career, much less Peyton. He's put up ridiculous numbers without a bunch of pro bowlers at the skill positions.

Playoff football is funny, especially in the free agency era. The true talent gap is always closer than realized, and timing and rhythm are huge. I'll venture that Green Bay's coast to the league's best record, and the Giants week to week desperate situations had them playing in a totally different mentality.

Rodgers has had some lackluster games, but he's not even CLOSE to Peyton Manning's level of playoff futility, nevermind the fact that the Super Bowl he won he balled like a motherfucking pimp, whereas the MVP of the Colts Super Bowl was Addai/Rhodes and their Defense, at best.

No, it's about how we measure QB's influence on winning titles and what an "elite" QB should bring to table in postseason. Anongst other things.

No one has even begun to question Rodgers in the way Manning is openly judged. 'Cept me.

Rodgers didn't do shit yesterday, or when his team folded against Niners twice or lost to Eli at home or anytime he played anyone besides Matt Ryan.

His defense had to bail him out against Caleb Hanie and Johnny Knox.

He has had the same caliber of offensive weapons as Farve. Oline has not been as good but that's not a "weapon"

Very possible. But that goes for everyone. When Brady or Peyton get a bye and then fold up at home, no one comes copping these pleas.

I'd say he is pretty close to Manning levels, to be honest. Most playoff games he just huffs about and stares at the scoreboard on the sideline shaking his head like a wino waiting for the liquor store to open up at 830am.

Aaron Rogers has played in 3 NFCCG

Twice his passer rating was below 60.

The game he won he had less TD passes than Caleb Hanie and BJ Raji had to win the game. But for the record, here are his stats from that epic performance

17/30 for 244 yards, 0 TD's and 2 INTS

Against CALEB HANIE...

I really need someone to explain why this doesn't matter.

The greatest QB of all time has been flat-out TERRIBLE in every single NFCCG he has played in. On top of being extremely pedestrian in most of his other playoff appearances that didn't involve a dome.

Who are we blaming this on? Just so I am clear...

You losers shouldn't even be allowed to utter the word Packers let alone talk about Qbing, a subject you clearly know nothing about.

So kindly Super Bowl Shuffle your ass out of NFL talk and go try to convince us Rose' knee won't explode or how you guys may actually get 2 games off Bron in the playoffs.

I was just going to wait till the playoffs like normal.

But this was just another example of what we will see then, so why wait?

And when it does, I'll be right here asking a simple question. There has to be an explanation beyond "winning SB's is hard"

Maybe Ted Thompson is not as smart as everyone thinks? Maybe Rodgers is too risk-averse to win against great teams? Maybe it's Farve fault?

I'm just curious.

Has Manning? Brady? Brees? Montana? Young?

You look at the past 30 years and while there have been exceptions like Dilfer and Brad Johnson, most of the teams have had great quarterbacks. Guys like Phil Simms who maybe weren't top-tier for their career but for the time they were winning, yes. You had like Rypien and Flacco as average guys but now we are up to what, like five out of 30 seasons where a great QB didn't win? The great QBs that have not won (e.g. Marino) was widely known because they are exceptions to the rule.

What exactly is your question here? Is it about the quarterback position? The Packers? Both seem to be doing just fine. The Packers, again, have been more successful in the last 30 years than 25 other franchises, and as successful as all but *one*. So I think their recipe is working.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

No team has ever won the quarterback lottery like this. Unprecedented, especially for the guys to be this healthy.

If Peyton Manning can be taken to task for only winning one Superbowl, WHY, WHY, WHY can we not ask why the Packers shouldn't have won more over the last 25 years.

Consecutive elite-of-the-elite QBs, who are remarkably durable.
A front office and ownership that are widely lauded
Any number of other great supporting players that have been part of this franchise over that time.

And all of that adds up to the same number of titles as Eli Manning?

You think there is nothing remarkable here? I see a once-in-a-1000-lifetime situation that, on paper, would point towards a dynasty or at least a historic run.

Agree to disagree

Farve was indisputably one of the best QBs of his era, he's a first-ballot HOFer.

Rodgers, we are told, is already the best QB of all time who possesses a combination of skills and abilities heretefore unseen in the NFL.

Combine all their games missed due to injury and you wouldn't even have a single season out of that 25 years.

My query is a valid one.

at the end he was a little too wild but at his best he was incredibly fucking good.

shit bart starr was great, too, they only won TWO more super bowls with him? how paltry!

look at the browns, even in an era where players were way easier to get, they win a fistful of titles with otto graham and only *one* after he retires despite having many stars, including the greatest football player *ever*.

when both those franchises haven't had an elite QB, they have been totally forgettable, particularly the packers.

god this thread is dumb.

Packers fans themselves speak openly about the fact that if they only get one title with Rodgers it will have been a waste.

When they asked Irsay about winning only one title with Peyton, he said it was a bit of a disappointment.

No team has EVER had this sort of UNINTERRUPTED run of QB play, not even close really.

But nobody can even ask the question if they should have won more titles?

Anyway, you have made your opinion known, you are not even addressing any points in the argument at this point, whyfore are you still up in this thread?

...

By the way this post is missing goodness by omitting Mark, Brunell, Kurt Warner, and Aaron Brooks. Don't Cuban B these solid starting QBs. Basically, Green Bay had Favre got even more pieces but had to part with them one way or another, then drafted Aaron. Letting a first round QB sit for years basically guarantees success. IF the QB is a first round caliber QB then sitting him means he churns out pro bowl performances frequently.

TL;DR it's unprecedented but how many teams in the NFL are afforded that luxury? How many teams have a great QB and are in position to draft his replacement that is a legit first round QB talent only to let him sit for years? This ain't remotely a shot at GB but BRING THE SLANDER.

In all honesty the most the rest of the league, excluding one team that perpetually cheats and is involved in scandals, can do is merely be in the conversation during the playoffs. Division and conference titles count as accomplishments due to consistency. Once again, it's hard to win one game in the NFL yet alone consistent division titles each year. Don't negate the fact that teams need a solid offensive line, running backs, wide receivers etc. They need at least a good to great corner, borderline pro bowl linebacker, solid safeties, and serviceable defensive line. These are things the organization needs to do to at least win a title.

Another thing, the Packers play in a tough division. None of this guaranteed wins in the division Cheatriots fuckery. That division is quite difficult so this makes their accomplishments even more impressive.

TL;DR Winning a title is difficult because it comes down to luck of the draw, injuries, and team chemistry at the right time.

Other teams have managed to win multiple titles, in less time, with lesser QB's. Montana and Young yielded a lot more than the longer reign of Rodgers/Farve has thus far.

If you are elite AND healthy at the game's most important position for a quarter-century and fail to really put together some hardware, isn't that evidence that SOMEONE is fucking up?

Shouldn't Green Bay's front office be held accountable, if no one else?

Is there any luckier thing than having an all-time great at QB for 25 years, with less starts missed in that time than Sam Bradford already has in his "career"???

They have had plenty of luck, their most important player is almost always healthy in that time span, and they have the most homegrown players of any franchise by a long way and boast about it often, so if they are lacking team chemistry, dunno who to blame.

and ends up with the exact same amount of hardware as Favre. cuz so many people criticize Favre for how he played when he was way past his prime and remember the bone crushing picks he threw more than appreciate how great he was for a good stretch of the late 90s where it seemed like he'd be MVP every year.

At some point, there has to be some sort of answer beyond "winning superbowls is hard"

Maybe it's time to sign free agents?

Maybe it's time to focus on building a defense?

Maybe quarterback is not as dominant a position as people claim?

Maybe Aaron Rodgers is not as good as people claim?

I don't know but I think that we, the people, deserve an answer.

Rodgers was won 50% of his playoff games at Lambeau.

Farve won 70%.

Let's discuss and after much debate, blame someone black on defense.

this is a weird comment since dude was upping this post the past several weeks after GB lost a few games following a 6-0 start, which is what I was responding to. also weird since basa didn't make this post, or even start this agenda, but you think it's about him. he has co-opted the brady agenda from you guys though, so have fun with that.

The post is not about whether Aaron Rodgers is a upper echelon QB. He is. The post is about why 25 years of upper echelon QB play within the confines of a stable and prudent organization and consistent contention has failed to yield more dividends in terms of titles.

There must be a reason, or confluence of them. I personally think it's a combination of Rodger's risk-averse approach to the game (and before him Farve's overly-risky style) that causes him to struggle against good defenses in the playoffs, and a front office that plays it TOO safe in their approach to player acquisition and roster-building.

It is not only a fair question to ask, it is one Packers fans must already be asking themselves. It is "Titletown", is it not? They moved the goalposts to this very point upon which I am standing, and after having received a bounty of uninterrupted elite QB play that no franchise had EVER seen before or is likely to see again, they have the same number of titles as Eli Manning.

This was Rodgers 14th straight game, including the playoffs, with a passer rating under 100. His fourth-quarter interception -- just his second in a road game against the Vikings and first since 2009 -- that wrapped up the game for the Vikings left him with a rating of 70.7. This from the guy who came into the season as the NFL's career passer rating leader (104.1).

So...is QB just not as important a position as everyone says it is? Is Risk-Averse-Rodgers just overrated? Or is Ted Thompson not the genius everyone says he is?

One of you smart guys must have an answer because the "GOAT QB" is 4-4 despite having a really good team around him and it doesn't look like Green Bay is going anywhere but their usual quick playoff exit.

What's the answer guys? Because it's gonna be thirty straight years of HOF quarterbacking very soon...

The telecast showed a stat that listed Rodgers' TD/INT ratio as 1/5 in Conference Championship games.

Rodgers hasn't played great today and his lack of production in Championship games is a pattern which gets under-reported.

But there have been a number of drops and his best receiver is gutting out an injury that probably would leave him out of the game if this game were played in the regular season.

But as great as Rodgers is as a player, it is perplexing how they only have the 1 SB.

But the team was patched together all year and really they had no business making it this far. Winning 10? games in a row is difficult and I can't think of many quarterbacks who could have pulled that off, really two years ago.

Most SB winning QB's, even Brady, have had SB runs where the QB was bailed out by a solid running game or the defense played well enough to have the team overcome a poor game by the GB

But as great as Rodgers is as a player, it is perplexing how they only have the 1 SB.

Obviously they've won a number of games and had some bad luck, like when they went 15-1 and just ran into the Giants that year and lost in the playoffs.

They haven't had a strong defense except the entire time, their offensive line has been inconsistent and they don't have a solid running back which are under the control of the GM.

But I guess the question is, "Who do you get to replace the management?" It's hard to get rid of a GM/Coach team which has won the division a number of years over their tenure.

Brees' SB run was better than Rodgers' where he beat Pey-Pey, Favre & Warner along the way without throwing a single interception. He also made the Aints relevant & has the numbers to back it up:

"Since joining the Saints in 2006, he has led all NFL quarterbacks in touchdowns, passing yards, and 300-yard games. Brees has passed for over 5,000 yards in a season five times—no other NFL quarterback has done so more than once. He has led the NFL in passing touchdowns four times, and in passing yards a record seven times."

WHAT'S GOOD *****? What's REALLY good?!?!????!!! Ha HA!

I think Rodgers is a more spectacular player, but Brees' consistency is what makes him stand out over Rodgers. As much as the Packers rely on Rodgers, I think the Saints ask more of Brees game in and game out. The fact that he put up good numbers the last couple of years on teams which didn't have the same talent as years before speaks to his ability.

Why do you refuse to address Rodgers play in these elimination games?

He hasn't been willing incredible offensive performances only to be undone by shitty defense.

FOR THE MOST PART, he has played poorly, turned the ball over and missed throws during listless offensive performances, not unlike this most recent one.

Against Seattle it was Green BAy's offense which repeatedly choked in the red zone when their defense kept getting them the ball and field position.

The year he went to the SB, Rodgers barely outplayed Bears 3rd stringer Caleb Hanie in a terrible game for the supposed GOAT QB. The Packers victory was sealed not by Rodgers, who struggled all day, but by BJ Raji getting an improbable pick 6 and the defense dominating on the road.

Is that why he plays horribly in their losses?

He has had a bad game every time they got bounced from the playoffs except way back when Kurt Warner was playing and the team was stacked top to bottom. And lost, obviously

HE played POORLY though! They are not a running team, Rodgers leading them in rushing is not some new thing.

He was inaccurate early and through halftime. Peep how many times his receivers (Cook especially) had to make difficult catches. The commentators were even talking about it.

HE simply did not play well.

You cite how everytime they get eliminated he plays poorly and keep asking how many elimination games he lost by playing poorly.

But also, how many eliminations games have the Packers won because of how well he played?

If the argument is they were never a great team and they live or die based on his play, then credit has to be given for all of the wins he led like the Dallas game.

Every other great QB in history with multiple super bowls has had playoff games where they didn't play that well but the rest of the team stepped up and won the game. That's happened for Rodgers what, 1 time? that you mentioned above? Brady, Manning, Ben, Eli and every other QB with multiple super bowls has been bailed out of bad playoff games by his D. Rodgers doesn't get that, he has to be at the top of his game to win every single playoff game.

I have no horse here, I'm not a Packers fan and Rodgers should have more wins given his talent, but if you are going to cite bad play in elimination games you have to cite good play in elimination games and the same issues other winning QBS have had as well.

And we are still in the same place…

EXCEPT NOW ITS THIRTY YEARS

And the murmurs are fucking open secrets now.

No one was saying it after he out dueled Caleb Hanie, just me.

But people started to notice as the years went by...DODGERS TOO SCARED TO PULL THE TRIGGER!

And pretty soon a few other voices were pointing out the Emperors stat-facular attire:

https://twitter.com/fduffy3/status/801535503346651137

But it took time, and repeated rinse-wash-repeat Packers seasons to end up back here again.

Oh wait COOLEH he was hurt last year!

Oh hey, I wonder if it's cause he held the ball forever like always?

But yeah, time passed and Rodgers has become a person people vaguely know is good but everyone knows-without-admitting isn't actually the guy you want when your team has the game on the line.

No…no one would. Cause Dodgers will not take you any further and it will be more boring getting there.

And now let us go to the DEBACLE IN DETROIT as narrated by Wisconsin's paper of record*

https://www.jsonline.com/story/sports/nfl/packers/dougherty/2018/10/07/dougherty-predictable-packers-struggling-just-follow-usual-script/1538712002/

One of Rodgers’ great assets is turning bad plays into good ones by breaking the pocket and finding somebody downfield. McCarthy has even built those improvisations into his offense.

But off and on over the years it’s been very much a double-edged sword, because things bog down when Rodgers too often passes up an open receiver early in hopes of finding something better later. The Lions, in fact, invited that by rushing only four, giving second and third efforts to chase him down when Rodgers moved around, and covering with seven or even sometimes eight players.

Twice the Lions strip-sacked Rodgers on extended plays in the first half that led directly to 10 big points and a 24-0 halftime deficit that was just too much to overcome.

“I had a couple real bad ones,” Rodgers said.

Rodgers’ final numbers looked good — he passed for 442 yards and a 108.0 rating — but he did not play well. Two lost fumbles don’t show up in passer rating, but they surely change games just as much as interceptions. And as he has the last few weeks, he missed a couple big throws that could have changed the game, too.

“If I hit Davante (Adams) on that first drive he might score on a crossing route,” Rodgers said.

*no sarcasm intended

OR HEY JUST ASK TJ LANG PACKERS VETERAN OFFENSIVE LINEMAN

“We love the extended plays and all the miraculous things that he can do, because he can do it anywhere from any point in time on the field. It doesn’t matter what the situation or the fundamental flaw he’s in, he can drop a dime anywhere he wants,” left tackle David Bakhtiari said. “(But) I think there’s a double-edge sword to it.

“There are times that I thoroughly enjoy ‘12’ bailing me out of situations, and being able to feel the rush and evade it. And then there are times when he’ll evade some rush right into my block, or he’ll be running around like a chicken with his head cut off. So I think it’s good and bad on both ends, but at the end of the day, he makes unbelievable plays with the extended stuff. So there are good things we can take away from that.

“What goes into it is not as many times is he going to be holding the ball for the over three to four seconds. That extra second can go by really quick, and a lot of people don’t notice, but that’s the difference between having a clean pocket and having a collapsed pocket.”

I know people are going to come in here talking about his knee is hurt, blah blah blah but look folks. he is not some young kid just cutting his teeth anymore. I mean, to be real, his prime is over and the back end of it is not very pretty right now.

Sure Eli in the same (worse) boat but Eli let them fly when he had his chances and he has two rings.

Blame Dodgers or blame Green Bay, I dunno but they struck a oil twice in a row and ended up with a nice split-level in Seacausus with a new midsize sedan in the carport.

Dog, he said HIMSELF that he blew it!

HE FUMBLED TWICE IN THE FIRST HALF LEADING TO DETROIT SCORES AND THEY WERE BAD FUMBLES

HE HELD THE BALL WHILE LOOKING AT A WIDE OPEN DEVIANT ADAMS STREAKING FOR A LIKELY TD ON THAT SLANT AND DIDN"T THROW IT

HE WAS OFF TARGET THE WHOLE FIRST HALF AND NOT SEEING THE FIELD

Then in the second half he poured the stats on against a prevent D

The Packers have been losing at halftime of every game this season. Rodgers stats at halftime of EVERY GAME have been terrible.

SHOW ME WHERE I AM WRONG

EXPLAIN TO ME HOW RODGERS WAS NOT PART OF THE PROBLEM!

He said he was, the Green Bay media and fans say he was, the stats say he was…but…what?

Okay, well if that's all you have to add, just dip up out the thread.

I watch the games. I watched his whole career. I brought stats. I brough anecdotal evidence. This shit is now an open discussion in the wider NFL.

Ted Thompson, the architect of the Packers draft and develop philosophy is out and rapidly being discredited.

MM is on a hot seat and him and Rodgers relationship is frayed.

Rodgers is having a terrible season.

The Packers window slammed shut and they are taking L's from the LOLions and yes, the Bears whose quarterback is a meathead college senior who can't even throw to his left.

But all you have is more sarcasm.

It's okay, the post was looking more and more on target every year, and now it's looking like prescience. Either engage, or go play somewhere, it's all the same to me.

We all know A-aron is a hall of famer, but that doesn't mean this team isn't deeply dependant on freestyling, off-script offensive football.

When shit goes right, its brilliant

when shit goes wrong, these MF miss the playoffs (often)

They keep trying to pull Rodgers back on script into something of a normal offense to prolong his career and he isn't having any of it.

Now McCarthy beefing with dude because of it.

Rodgers is going to the HOF just like farve, and he will not finish his career in GB

JUST LIKE FARVE.

I am still trying to understand how Rodgers became the ONE qb you can't say anything about on here.

WHY?

Oh and Rodgers beloved "off-script-magic"…well, it's part of why the Packers don't win rings. And every year he gets slower and more beat up, and since he is too much of a perfectionist to risk throwing into tight windows, takes more sacks, takes the offense out of rhythm and wears out his linemen.

And the returns on those broken plays are getting lower with each year that passes. And the injuries are going to become chronic.

Of course, then the plea will be that he has struggled with injuries late in his career. Every fucking QB ever besides Eli has struggled with injuries late in his career.

When the Browns lost because their kicker forgot how to kick and people tried to blame Tyrod that noise got shut down like it should have. Yesterday was WAY worse than that. That's where I'm at. He is not above criticism. The thing I find funny about all this is that he gets roasted harder here than Stafford does in Detroit and Matty IceCream has won exactly nothing ever.

Its funny, I had the same reaction yesterday thru halftime anyways. I can't stand Rodgers or the Packers so take glee when they look like shit which they did the first half. Started texting my buddy, man if Brady had a game like this, he'd have hit the cliff and they wouldn't let up but the baaaaad man gets a pass.

Then the 2nd half happened and thought the Lions were gonna Lion there way to Rodgers comeback. Luckily that didn't happen so didn't have to look completely stupid, just semi-stupid. lol

compared to the rest of the NFL.

I think this is part of the problem, particularly with Favre. Too many wideouts left hanging to dry leads to injuries, shortened careers.

Rodgers actually doesn't hang receivers out to dry. If you are not open, he is not going to throw it.

Which is part of why he is not Farve, but also probably part of his problem once you get into those playoffs games where those are the throws you have to be willing to make, unless you have a HOF defense behind you.

And even then…Eli has no business in a Hall of Fame, but he makes those throws, win or lose. That's a big part of why he has two rings. He also doesn't hold the ball and get hit, he rather hang the receiver out to dry like Brett

.

People don't seem to realize that.

THE TAMPA BAY BUCS won a superbowl

The Baltimore Ravens won a superbowl.

As good as Russell Wilson is NOW his TEAM was overall BETTER.

Them early Patriot championship teams WERE BETTER than BRADY as a individual.

Don't forget coaching.

Everybody just keeps it moving like this didn't manifest inexorably into that real truth serum.

He not Eli-level washed but this offense is broken and he is as much a part of that as anyone on it.

The more his athleticism fades, the more his pathologically risk-averse style of play becomes a set of handcuffs.

That was one of the worst playoff defense performances by a good team in the past 20 years or so.

Dom Capers should have been fired on the spot for refusing to defend the read option.

Kaep had 16 carries for 181 yards rushing and 2 TDs, Packers lost 45-31.

Well, Aaron didn't have a great game and no one had seen the read-option like that before. The Packers defense was unprepared for seeing it with that talented of a team, but that is somewhat excusable given the newness of what Niners were running. Jim Harbaugh was an "offensive genius" still lololol.

Oh and the next time he got a shot at the Niners, Capers buckled down and held them to 23, despite a dreary offensive performance

Wanna know Rodgers stats for that game???

17 of 26 passes for 177 yards and a touchdown!!!

As RG3's season went on, more and more teams started running it. I mean, it's not like Dom Capers had never seen a read-option offense before.

Even after the game Capers gave a miserable excuse for his defense, claiming they were ready for it or some shit.

I don't really care about your Rodgers agenda, but this playoff game was a remarkable defensive collapse.

Okay but it was brand new to the NFL that season, in terms of the breadth and variations with which it was being employed

They had a good not great D that got destroyed by a stacked team using a player and scheme that people had struggled to adjust to.

The Packers did a particularly BAD, BAD job but that's one bad game, at the end of the day. The idea that you would immediately fire the DC who had just won you a SuperBowl and whose unit had had a good season…well, I'll just assume you were speaking in hyperbole.

Rodgers play has actually slipped to below average…the only thing he is good at is not throwing the ball to the other team. Not that useful if you can't/won't throw the ball to your team either.

Cheatriots (esp. in Spygate years) were mostly Boody dinking and dunking to the tune of QBR in the 70s while the defense did most of the heavy lifting (aided by the film provided by spy cameras). 9-0 in the playoffs and I'd give Belicheat/McGinest/Canon/Nikon more credit for that.

Boody's best passing day in the SB was against the fuckin Eagles and he caught a big fat L due to the Tuck Rule no longer being a thing, LOL

as for the Packers

they seem to have lucked out in the QB department but defensively they were ass juice for a good number of the later Favre years and the middle Rodgers years. Rodgers had some of the worst O-Lines in some of those years too. Which added on to that "GOAT" talk.

Aaron is the blessing and the curse, just like Favre, just in different ways.

I think Mahomes, on pace to be the TRUE QB GOAT successor to Pey-Pey, will likely end up with less rings in his career and could very well lose to the Niners, who have a SUPERIOR defense AND a good QB.

If he beats them, I'm going to be obnoxious like LeBronies are though

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

Look bro. The problem is that they decided to call a flag when they weren’t
calling flags. I don’t have a problem with them not calling the calls, which
is the way it was all game.

But then the packers get a stop, and you call a hold on a play where the
ball wasn’t even catchable?

Packer receivers were getting held all game, on one obvious hold, that eventually led
to the Bucs scoring. Bucs were grabbing jerseys all game.

Cool you’re letting defenders hold, that’s how the game is going to be called....
But then you call a hold at the end of the game?

Aaron Rodgers outplayed Tom Brady though.

..when the defender has the WRs' shirt stretched out by 2 yards.

LOL.

Don't act like GB didn't climb back into the game on questionable calls (esp that helmet/targeting call). The Refs let a lot of shit slide today (evenly), but called the most egregious/obvious fouls.

You really can't ask for more than that.

That was targeting. Clear helmet to helmet targeting. That call isn’t debatable.
Helmet rams right into the helmet. So it wasn’t some make up call.

Jersey being held for 2 yards? That makes no sense. Go look at Adams jersey
clearly being pulled in the end zone.

It’s whatever. They let them play all game and left it in the hands of the players, except
in the end ,they decided the game.

It is what it is.

GB simply made one of their more egregious fouls late in a crucial moment. It ain't no more to it.

Do you watch and follow the NFL?

Do you find it interesting that the Packers run of great quarterbacking is unprecedented in league history?

Do you find the fact that it has also not translated into many championship titles worthy of discussion? Perhaps even moreso with the context that the Packers are also considered a great organization.

If you answered no to any of these questions, then yeah, wrong post for you.

I like talking about football though and will happily discuss subjects both consequential and trivial. They need only be interesting. Hence my queries.

If someone started a post about the Bears titled "Why has one of the league oldest and most storied teams never really solved their QB problem", I wouldn't bat an eye. I actually would probably rack up the most posts on the subject.

They beat the Packers in 2019 but okay!

Has anyone in this post alleged that the Bears have been as successful as the Packers in those 30 years?

Subject has nothing to do with the Bears since HOF Quarterbacking and the Bears are not two things that go together.

If you want to talk about the Bears it would seem to make more sense to start a Bears thread (if you need suggestions maybe something a poll titled "How will the Beloved ruin Justin Fields?" with some amusing options.

But I get it, things are dead around here and I am happy to talk about the Bears in any thread, so feel free to go off.

Alternately, if you have any thoughts on the actual subject of this thread, and how it relates to the current meltdown going on in Lambeau (so similar to the one they had with their last HOF QB!), I would love to hear them!

But that's obvious!

The question is WHY

In Aaron's case my earliest inclinations were proven true. He shrinks in the moment and his risk averse style of play is not suited to playoff football.

Farve was the same, yet opposite. He played hero ball in the moment and took too many risks in the playoffs.

Having been drafted into an organization on the tail end of Farve’s run, at the height of fun ball, thtlikely contributed to how risk averse Rodgers can be at times.

If Eli doesn't get in the Hall of Fame (which he probably shouldn't), the Giants have four Super Bowl from three non-HOF Qbs.

There really isn't an argument against him. Most are ridiculous. HE came through when it mattered and had a long career. What more can you ask for?

that's how Boody has grifted his way to "GOAT".

Eli put on the best Do Not Lose Game performance of a lifetime, twice. And took out the "GOAT" on both tries.

also I think Eli will probably get in just because of the 2 rings and the stats. Even though those are like "era" stats.

I don't know where that Giants team management has gone (and I am not complaining for obvious reasons), but they used to know the assignment.

Packers won Super Bowls on DEFENSE + HOF QB performances.
Rodgers basically has had a Marino team outside of the year he won the SB.

The effed up thing is that this year, it wasn't the damn defense.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

It's been years since I watched a NFL football game and I'm not a Giants fan, but I did watch those Eli Giants teams before he retired. In addition to the top notch defense that dominated for those two Super Bowl runs, I vaguely remember the Giants having a pretty good offensive line and a more than serviceable running game as well. I think the running backs for that first Giants' Super Bowl team might have been better than the second one, but I could be wrong since my memory could be off. Those two added elements helped a ton in not forcing Eli in having to single handedly have to beat teams on the offensive end.

To also add to what you said about his Hall of Fame chances, the media and sports writers liking him should help a ton in him making it in. I highly doubt he'll be a first time entry, but I think he'll make it on his second or third year on the ballot.

two out his three Superbowl losses (against the GOAT's 7 Superbowl wins) definitely makes Eli "feel" like a Hall of Famer to me. Especially given that he was Superbowl MVP in both of those wins, and also has four Pro Bowls. That's a Hall of Fame resume.

Both SB’s, with the Giants losing, Eli led the team down the field for the game winning TD. Yes, the Tyree helmet catch. But also the crucial 3rd down conversation to Steve Smith, and the game winning TD to Plaxico. And in 2011, from deep in his own territory the incredible deep throw to Manningham.

He stepped up and made plays when his team was behind at the end of both titles.

Yep. Eli's highs are super high and it is easy to forget cuz his lows were FLOrida/T-Pain low. To me, he was never the same after his best linemen retired and the team couldn't properly replace them..kinda like what happened Cam Newton after his bonkers 15-1 year. It is just easier for folks to say 'yeah, Cam sux and I never liked him' than to potentially give him some grace and hate at the same time.

But yeah, Eli...having a good drive to lock in a win is a big deal. Eli was able to do it more than once against good defenses in big games. Meanwhile, Large Ben and Rodgers are on 10 year runs where they can't seem to figure it out when it is THEIR time to have the badass 80 yard drive in a tough spot in January. Lots of 3 or 4 and outs when it counts with those dudes.
