David Blatt Says Max Contract Player Kevin Love 'Not a Max Player Yet'

Jan 12, 2015

Cleveland Cavaliers head coach David Blatt may not have said the wrong thing about Kevin Love, but he definitely picked the wrong time.

Following Cleveland's fifth straight loss, which was marked by the same lack of intensity that has characterized the team's play during LeBron James' absence, Blatt responded to questions about how a team with two max players could perform so poorly.

Per Blake Ellington of Sactown Royalty, here's the key exchange:

If Blatt was merely pointing out that Love's deal, originally signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves, was actually one year short of the five-season max, maybe there's no harm done. He's right on that point—mostly.

Love's deal didn't include the fifth year typically associated with "max guys," but it does pay him the maximum amount allowed on a four-year deal.

Of course, if Blatt was calling out his power forward's talent as being unworthy of a maximum contract, that's different. Never mind that Blatt is probably also right on that point, the Cavaliers' disappointing record and troublesome failure to muster consistent effort has him on thin ice already.

A tepid endorsement from James and more vociferous support from general manager David Griffin in recent weeks won't mean much if Blatt is calling out his team's top talent in the media. Love can opt out of his contract as soon as this summer, and a report from Jason Lloyd of the Akron Beacon Journal indicates he plans to do just that.

Per Lloyd, Love wants to sign a one-year deal ahead of the projected salary cap spike in 2016, at which point he'll cash in on a multiyear max tied to a percentage of the newly inflated cap. It's just business.

The fear in Cleveland is that Love will take Blatt's comments personally, giving him an excuse to walk away this summer. Even if Love's play has underwhelmed, it would be a disaster to lose the supposed superstar who cost the Cavs Andrew Wiggins in a trade.

Big picture: Blatt's comments have been and will continue to be blown out of proportion. He'll be scrutinized unfairly, his words parsed and his tone analyzed. Whether that's fair or not is irrelevant.

The Cavaliers haven't met expectations this season, and because Blatt isn't as integral to the team's future as James or Kyrie Irving or even Love, it's Blatt who will be under the microscope.

I guess that means he'll need to be more careful around the microphone.

Nah dog....Truth is winning...Big time....

He called out Love's bullshit even when he was putting up gaudy numbers for the Timberwolves....Shit...I was all for Love coming to the Bulls. But Truth stuck to his guns and pointed out that dude was all empty stats...

Hey, maybe Love will get it together and produce in some meaningful games....Maybe it may be a coaching issue.

But as agendas go this one is platinum....

I think what people r saying is the Knicks situation cannot be reasonably compared to what's going on in Cleveland....

Again...I party when the Knicks suck. As a Bulls fan that shit is in my genes....

But during the best recent season for the Knicks when Melo led that team to a win in the 'offs nobody in their right mind thought that team was winning a ring...In fact that Knicks team made a lot of people eat crow because people were actually surprised they ended up with one of the best records in the East....Nobody was screaming about no Novak beyond dude making some timely 3's...

But this James led Cavs team was picked by damn near everyone this season to win it all...

So nah...two different storylines....

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

naw this is where yall lying now
that was the year AFTER linsanity
mike woodson had them playing well the whole second half of that previous season after antoni got fired. they had one of the best records in the league the last couple of weeks or whatever it was + they made the playoffs
then when the new season started they BLEW MIAMI OUT by 20+ pts
that knick team was good from the gate and riding off hype from the PREVIOUS season
ppl on this board were arguing if the knicks were the best team in the league after that heat blow out
stop lying or trying pretend that ppl thought the knicks were garbage or something
melo played well obs , all i'm saying is the team wasn't garbage. they had veteran leaders and everybody played their role well. the previous yr they actually played well WITHOUT melo....remember that part of linsanity?

This is garden-variety shit, a coach calling out a player deservedly in the press when other means have failed. Is the NBA so pussified now that you can't call out someone who is OBVIOUSLY not performing to expectation? Because you want to beg them to take a huge pile of money?

The shit is business. If he wants a one-year deal now, he'll probably want it in the summer. The way things are going, it would be best for both parties. Plus he can cash in heavier re-signing than signing elsewhere. What I am saying is that the business side of things doesn't change because of these comments, and that's what will decide Love's fate.

I get the "disaster" angle of losing Love, but if he doesn't do his job, it's not a matter of considering what you gave up. That's already gone. You have to look at whether or not you commit that kind of money and term to him, independently of what you could have had.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

In response to Reply # 32

because Love does seem like a guy who has a bit of a sulky streak and a resentment towards people he thinks are not helping him succeed. So while the criticism might be fair, Kevin might look at that statement and say, well, I know for a fact there will be multiple teams lining up to offer me MAX money in the summer, why should I be worried about what the Cavs and David Blatt has to say? And "winning" the locker room definitely seems like the biggest challenge lying in front of Blatt right now, so it could definitely go the wrong way if he creates a rift with Love.

But yeah, besides all that, what he said is fair and any player worth a long-term commitment will take it as a challenge as opposed to an insult.

this year and Love opts out and bounces. Especially with Wiggins looking like a potential legit star and while AB is not quite "better than LJ ever was" he's showing signs of being a contributor. The Cavs gave away another 1st rounder along with those guys.

People were hyping the signings of ready-for-the-glue-factory type dudes like Marion, Miller & James Jones like they were really going to put them over the top. Lebron is going to have to carry a much heavier load in Cleveland than he did in Miami for this team to have a chance.

Trading away Dion for JR, Shump & others is another "all-in" move that probably won't work.

The Cav's could've had a solid young nucleus of Kyrie, Wiggins, Tristan, Waiters, & Bennett regardless of what Lebron does but now it all hinges on #Kang and his balky back and knees.

Pretty much all the teams that are riding up top this season are the ones that opted for continuity and developing players (Warriors, Portland, the top 4 in the East) while the teams mortgaging their future like the Cavs and Clippers are hanging in there but struggling.

Plus could you imagine taking passes from Lebron instead of Mo Williams right now?

should have been
- keep Wiggins/Bennett
- trade Dion (while the value was high) to get a big or two (they essentially did this)

solves the two problems Cavs had before the season started: interior and perimeter defense.

a couple of cheap bench shooters could have worked, but Bennett could have been that.

oh well.

wasn't calling a title, but this is a "rest of the league" eclipsing disaster

and people will blame Kyrie (he deserves some for his play). yeah, he's responsible for the record. but that front office (including its silent partner) would get the most frying IMO.

Let's ignore that your best player also does his most damage as a small ball 4 and the fact that Love isn't just a bad defender, he's actively against trying on that end. Talent will figure it out, Love will defend like Chris Bosh, that's what they all said right?

Bruh, Lebron pushed for Kevin Love. This is his fault. Most of us didn't know Kevin Love was this wack. It turns out he was a good player on a wack team that got exposed the second he came to the east. I'm on record as saying that trade screwed the Cavs so FOH with this failure talk. Lebronon was happy about it so speak to them.

Dion had to go because he was a poor fit. Dion is an awful teammate who sulks because he has to come off the bench. Shump shores up the defense a little bit when healthy. Lebron said himself this team would not win a chip immediately. Kevin Love is the most overrated alleged star player in the league.

Bron the GM FUCKING SUCKS. Lebronon needs to step in and defend his moves.

Kevin Love is not a max player yet, the whole reason Minny had to deal him was because they didn't fully max him out in order to have money to max Rubio down the road when they gave KLove that contract three years ago.

He's playing to get one this offseason and doing a terrible job with it but the Lakers (to name at least one team shitty and desperate enough to do so) will do so if Bron decides he's not staying.

Now should Splatt have said it when folks can misconstrue and put all the extras on it?

No.

Not only does he not yet get how to coach NBA players but he doesn't know how to handle the US sports media.

And he might be the only guy who has performed worse than Love in Cleveland so far.

However, I can't hop on the gotcha bandwagon here over this quote when it's actually just true.

And rather than get good with the follow-ups, these beat reporters just ran back to fall lockstep in with all these NBA blog Twitter journalists and fans with the corny "ooooh" fingerprinting.

Dumbest sports world faux-outrage non-story this week besides Hannah Storm shoving that makeup girl's arm out of a live shot during an NFL broadcast (which she is perfectly justified in doing by the way while all these wanna-act-mad-about-anything types are all over the Internet talking about how that moment somehow exposed her nefarious character and demonic soul).

Anyway, Splatt is still a disaster anyway but this is nothing.

He had to have seen that K Love and Kyrie were both stay padding lovers when he played against them correct?

Or that he actually needed a real coach?

Or that his knees were starting to get a little smoky?

Kevin Love's bad defense keeps costing the Cavaliers
By Satchel Price on Jan 14 2015, 1:23p

It didn't take long for the Phoenix Suns to find their hot hand in a 107-100 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday. Markieff Morris got things going early by hitting an uncontested 18-foot jumper, then followed it up minutes later by barreling to the basket from the elbow for an easy layup.

Morris had a lot moves going Tuesday en route to scoring a career-high 35 points and put them all on display in an impressive performance. He's a rising player in this league. Yet he also had the benefit of being guarded by Kevin Love for the majority of the game.

Love's poor defensive work is nothing new, but it's back under the spotlight Wednesday after the All-Star was torched by Morris for 27 minutes. Love often looked overwhelmed trying to stop the athletic Suns forward, whether he was matched up in an isolation or trying to close out on the perimeter.

You could tell it was going to be that kind of night early on, when a backpedaling Love stumbled to the floor while trying to defend Morris' penetration on an isolation from the elbow:

About a minute later, the Suns went back to a similar play, with Morris setting up against Love near the right elbow. Cha-ching:

This set the tone for a night of dominant production by Morris, who finished the game shooting 15-of-21 from the field. Love should've had an increased sense of urgency in defending after Morris made those buckets early on, but you still regularly saw the Suns big man finding open space and hitting shots.

By the fourth quarter, head coach David Blatt had seen enough and put Love on the bench in favor of James Jones. This didn't stop Morris, who added another 12 points in the fourth quarter with Love sidelined. But again: Kevin Love got benched for an entire fourth quarter in favor of James Jones. This comes days after Blatt tried to get cute with semantics and suggested Love wasn't a max-contract player.

So that's where the Cavaliers and Love appear to be at this point. Being benched in the fourth quarter for defense used to be the territory of Carlos Boozer -- "OK, thanks Carlos, but it's time for our team to play defense now" -- yet this isn't the first time we've seen it with Love. Just how bad have things gotten?

No love for rim protection

The Cavaliers were patient with Love and his questionable defense early in the year, but a few months into the season, many of Love's poor habits remain, particularly when defending around the basket.

The guy may have a knack for positioning when it comes to grabbing rebounds, but he still doesn't put the effort into defending the basket well. Among the 10 Cavaliers who have gotten significant playing time this season, including the departed Dion Waiters and injured Anderson Varejao, Love ranks seventh in contesting shots around the basket, allowing 1.09 points per attempt, per Synergy Sports Technology. For some perspective: LeBron James leads the team at 0.806 points per attempt. Overall, Love is in the league's 34th percentile, good for 245th among all players.

Some of the names ahead of Love on that list defy logic: 38-year-old point guard Andre Miller is above him. Of course, different players are tasked with different roles, but it underscores how futile Love has been at one of his core responsibilities.

That's a huge concern for a team that's already replaced its starting center this season and needs 35-plus minutes a night from Love. This isn't the kind of issue that the team can comb over with some slight changes in scheme and personnel usage.

Morris scored a lot of his points Wednesday on other players, primarily Jones and Shawn Marion, but that's because Blatt pulled the plug on Love so early. The 26-year-old doesn't have strong instincts or lateral movement, and athletic big men like Morris have had little trouble exposing that.

A bad Cavaliers defense overall

Love's reputation as a defender, which wasn't stellar in the first place, has taken a sizable hit since arriving in Cleveland. That's largely because of the numbers described above, as well as Cleveland's team-wide struggles on that end of the floor. Love wasn't expected to anchor the defense, but it wasn't anticipated that he'd contribute to one of the weakest units in the league.

The Cavaliers are currently 26th in the NBA in defensive efficiency, allowing 106.3 points per 100 possessions, per NBA.com. Since LeBron's injury in late December, which caused him to miss eight of the team's past nine games, that number is up to 109.2 points.

The numbers are ugly elsewhere, too. The Cavaliers are 29th in opponent field-goal percentage, both overall (47.1 percent) and inside 5 feet (62.7 percent). In both cases, Love's former team, the Timberwolves, is at the bottom of the list. Cleveland also allows the league's highest percentage from 15-to-19 feet (45.7 percent).

It would be unfair to attribute all of these struggles to Love, but it's clear he plays a pivotal role in the team's defensive efforts, especially around the basket. The NBA may be increasingly built on a platform of fluid ball movement and three-pointers, but every good defense still protects the rim like a mother protects her child. The Cavaliers haven't exactly lived up to that end of the bargain.

Reasons for optimism

This all paints a pretty dire picture for Cleveland, but there are some reasons to be hopeful going forward. The team still has James, one of the game's elite players, and the recent addition of center Timofey Mozgov should take some pressure off Love defensively. There have been stretches where the Cavaliers looked at least adequate on that end, which would at least be enough to win a bunch of games given the team's skilled offensive talent.

There are also some silver linings to Love's defensive numbers, which suggest a player who's actually pretty good at some things. For example, he's above-average defending post-ups, placing in the league's 67th percentile, per Synergy Sports Technology. He also comes in just about average against jump shots.

Love is also better against isolation plays than he looked against Morris, who went a perfect 3-of-3 in those opportunities Tuesday. Despite that performance, Love is still in the 71st percentile against isolation, allowing 0.727 points per possession, per Synergy. Opponents have shot 9-of-28 with Love defending in those situations. He's often been effective one-on-one.

The numbers aren't the be-all, end-all, because they don't always fully account for quality of opposition and the structure of the help defense, but they show there are glimpses of a decent defender in there. Whether that means Blatt can eventually coax a solid defense out of the Cavaliers remains to be seen.

Love's struggles are a legitimate concern, though, and not simply because he's an All-Star who's failing to live up to expectations. The Cavaliers are a mess defensively right now and Love is arguably the biggest reason that's the case.

What is the absolute best offer the Cavs land in a trade for KLove? I don't want him gone but if he left in a trade I wouldn't be mad as long as it's a good trade.

Kevin Love hasn't seen a single minute of the playoffs.

So Dwight had earned more respect than Love has.

This is true^^^^^

And we have to add that Howard left because an aging Laker great and teammate was calling him soft despite the fact he was playing with a serious shoulder injury...

Kevin Love is a worse player and teammate than Dwight.

He plays with less fire.

Works on his game less.

And is a fucking loser.
