from the North
I'm used to crazy Nebraska fans treating it as a state religion, remembering the 3rd team fullback from 1978. The "Go Big Red" chants breaking out in the bar, restaurants, airport, Midas waiting room whatever on non-game days, hell we elected to Tom Osborne to state government
That, with the exception of probably 3, small Vandy and Titans sharing the Nashville city limits, Kentucky caring more about basketball although still way ahead of a place like Indiana, and possibly Mizzou. I think they are still trying to get their weight up in fandom for Columbia, every other is as nuts with a plate of catfish instead of Omaha steak.
I traveled through Atlanta and drove through a good portion of the area with a Mississippi State sweatshirt on to partly see the reaction
Had a guy stop me to talk about his 1980 Sun Bowl appearance as a player at Hartsfield/Jackson
Numerous "Hail State" blurts from coeds at odd places, see above
Flight attendant told me we weren't going to get along well in a deadpan, praised the defense in Oxford to soften her up...not trying to fuck around and miss out on refreshments
Random strangers came up to me, assumed Starkville grads, asked where I was living and working these days among other things
It's fun if you embrace it, Phyllis may be a bit off her rocker, but the pride and identity is unmatched as a collective anywhere else.
