City's usually unflappable Spanish midfielder was widely criticized as the one weak link against Roma, but the team had such a comprehensive win that it mattered little in the end. They are now just 3pts back of previously unassailable Chelsea and have finally made it to the round of 16 of the Champions League; if it weren't for some key absences things would be looking very rosy indeed. Thankfully they travel to last-place Leicester this weekend, where they can conceivably spend a mostly stress-free game, hoping rivals Chelsea slip up against Hull. Which mostly isn't very likely, as Mourinho will want to make a statement after the loss in Newcastle, not to mention that Hull hasn't won a game in over 2 months. United get to rub their new 3rd place in Liverpool's faces, after a very bad week for the Reds. There's scant evidence that anything will happen to Brendan Rodgers anytime soon, but with the paucity of his team on offense and absolute lackluster way in which they exited the CL, no doubt a loss to United would not help. And speaking of managers in trouble, Arsenal have to take on the mighty magpies, who remarkably could leapfrog them in the table with a win. However they'll be without their keeper and possibly key personnel like Taylor, Coloccini and Sissoko. Swansea host Spurs on Sunday for a good opportunity to rebound from their loss to West Ham.
Spain: Real Madrid host minnows Almeria later today, with an eye on keeping their win streak intact until the winter break. Almeria just fired their coach and have only taken 2pts from 8 games, so goals should be expected
Italy: Roma have a dangerous trip to 3rd place Genoa to deal with, just mere days after their flat performance at home against City. Juve had better luck in Europe but they do have to contend with visiting Sampdoria, who haven't lost since late October
Germany: Bayern play unexplicable 3rd place Augsburg, who actually beat them last season. Dortmund will see if they can make it two in a row, against fellow lowriders Hertha Berlin
France: the critics have been out in force after PSG's tactically limp loss to Barcelona, but a trip to Guingamp shouldn't create too much more tension. The main focus of league-watchers will be on Monaco-Marseille, which could be the perfect moment for the prince's team to seize some momentum before the xmas break
