Report: Aldon Smith will pay 49ers to play November 9, 2014, 9:15 am Matt Maiocco
NEW ORLEANS -- Linebacker Aldon Smith, who served a nine-game suspension for violations of the NFL’s policies on substance abuse and personal conduct, will reportedly not receive any pay from the 49ers this season and he will owe the club $661,000 next season.
Due to the suspension, Smith will receive $1.099 million of his scheduled $2.336 million salary this season. He will also owe the 49ers from a forfeiture of his original $8.961 million signing bonus as the No. 7 overall pick in the 2011 draft.
In addition to the money Smith will not get paid this season, he will owe the 49ers an additional $661,000 after this season, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported.
The 49ers continued to pay Smith his full salary last season during the five games he missed when he left the team voluntarily to enter into treatment for substance abuse.
This offseason the 49ers picked up the fifth-year option for Smith, who is scheduled to make $9.754 million in salary in 2015. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

right now he's about to kill someone innocent on his way to rock bottom. that'd be a *real* tragedy. the scary part is that he denies he did anything wrong in his latest incident.
we all got problems and demons, but at the end of the day it's our actions that count. I don't feel much sympathy about him wasting his life when his actions are endangering everyone else's.

The issue is he has the resources to do whatever the hell he wants...which comes to your point about him potentially injuring someone else. I wish the condition for mandated rehab against someone's will included not only a danger to self but also danger to others.

Aldon was in alcohol treatment and Harbaugh and co. allowed him to come back after 4 weeks rather than actually see if he could get life together in terms of his drinking.

That prior enabling becomes a stepping stone to subsequent incidents. By no means am I singling out Harbaugh but he and Niners management were in the unique position to leverage not playing football as a motivator for him to go to rehab and get clean...rather they let him back after 4 weeks, in his mind that's likely just a slap on the wrist so why change?

i'm not saying harbaugh was barry switzer levels of letting the inmates run the asylum behaviorally by "letting the legal system be the decider" or whatever, but it doesn't sound like he ran a very tight ship either.
that's the irony/contradiction of jed's "winning with class" mantra. 49ers led the league in arrests during the baalke/harbaugh run.
