""Me & Dwight are the Michaels. Them other niggaz are Titos. " - Beard"

I wonder if that's why he expects the role players to help out on defense.

http://www.philstar.com/sports/2014/07/24/1349730/harden-says-phl-gilas-could-play-spurs

As for the Rockets’ future, Harden said he’s not worried that Jeremy Lin has left for the Los Angeles Lakers and Chandler Parsons for the Dallas Mavericks. “Dwight (Howard) and I are the cornerstones of the Rockets,” said Harden. “The rest of the guys are role players or pieces that complete our team. We’ve lost some pieces and added some pieces. I think we’ll be fine next season.”

LOL funny thing was there was that rumor he woulda gotten flipped for Melo if it woulda brought in Bron.

Dwight and Harden are just doing damage control right now. What are they supposed to say?

"Were gonna suck now"?

If anything I woulda thiught both those comments were more shots at the guys who departed rather than current teamates.

At least Howard has been to the finals as a clear #1

Harden's only real team success has been as one of the role players he described

Doesn't matter who else the Rockets bring in, their "cornerstones" are just as concerned with chasing ass as they are a title. I'll never take them seriously as contenders until they grow up and in Dwight's case it's looking like he never will.

Role players or not (Shaquille/Gasol to name a few)

and unlike Bean, Harden isn't known for saying things to disparage his teammates...

At least Harden did say "he and Howard" are the cornerstone of the team whereas Bean woulda just said "he" alone is the conerstone and everyone else is a role player...

If the answer to those questions is no, which it is, then he's a role player. I watched him get thoroughly outplayed in the playoffs by Wesley Matthews who also is a role player...

The Rockets didnt want to pay so whatever, but they are worse off without him

And Dallas is better for having him. In fact, this with Dallas' other offseason moves have put them a distinct notch above Houston.

Dallas is a dark horse finals contender...Houston still needs a 3rd scorer lol

He's got Dwight and still went out round 1. Harden hasn't proven to be a good cornerstone, at this point.

Maybe he was better off as a #3 "role player". At least he sort of tried on defense back then, and wasn't in a position where he could shit on teammates.

Better than the top tier teams which is why you can't necessarily judge them on their standings in the west...

Which is also why they had to upgrade at several positions in order to become a legitimate championship threat

Regardless, he's done nothing yet as a "cornerstone" and he shouldn't be speaking like that. Whether he meant to come off that way or not, that's what happened.

He's the cornerstone of a 1st round loser to this point.

The 3rd scorer on good teams is never a role player. Hes usually a guy who could lead a bad team in scoring.

The 3rd best scorers from recent finalists are Chris Bosh x4, Kawhi/Manu tie x2, Harden himself, Caron Butler, Andrew Bynum x2, Kevin Garnett x2, Lamar Odom, Hedo Turkoglu, Manu again, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Jason Williams, Josh Howard, Tayshaun Prince, Manu again, Rasheed Wallace, Gary Payton

Those were integral pieces of their teams, and in some cases elite players themselves.

Houston is a legit championship contender yet, especially if they woulda kept the same team from last season...

If they're serious abt becoming a championship team, then they could've upgraded at every position except the 2 and the 5. The Rockets aren't going to miss Parsons as much as you think they will, Ariza will spell him just fine....particularly on D

Oh, Is Wes Matthews a role player? He's the 3rd best player on Portland and he outplayed Parsons in that playoff series this season....and said he was the best SF in that series before it started....

You might mean Nic Batum but Parsons went for 19/7 in that series, better than either of them. But im sure you saw Wesley Matthews ball out...while Hardrn was guarding him.

And if the Rockets werent a contender with Parsons, they definitely are further away now.

They lost that series because they were basically playing 3v5...trashing one of the 3 after the Rockets gambled him awat and lost is really dumb. Bottom line the third best player on a 54 win team is not a role player.

the same holds true for Batum...they're interchangeable which is why I remember Matthews boasting before that series that "he was the best small forward on the floor" and I remember Parsons taking exception to that

Matthews outweighs Batum by like 20 pound but he's 3 inches shorter

>You might mean Nic Batum but Parsons went for 19/7 in that
>series, better than either of them. But im sure you saw

Parsons didn't shoot particularly well that series (43%)...had only one gm where he made 50% of his FG...mind you, hardly any D was played by either team in that series

They lost because it was an evenly matched series from the start that most ppl predicted would go 7 and would be one of the more entertaining series of the 1st round. Portland didn't play a lot of defense either, so it wasn't abt Houston/Harden not playing D.

>Bottom line the third best player on
>a 54 win team is not a role player.

Call him what you want - all I know is he wouldn't be a 3rd option on ANY of the previous nba champions w/the exception of maybe the Mavs and that's because they spreaded the offense around...

Parsons is good player...a piece to the puzzle but not a final piece. He couldn't have been the 3rd option on the Heat or the Spurs (replace Leonard w/Parsons and the Spurs might not have the finals)

and that's not just like last season, and not just in odd lineups. I have never seen Batum play even 5 minutes at the SG position since he was an 18-year-old rookie in the league. And Matthews is not, and never has been, the SF in any lineups. Maybe there were some three guard lineups due to injury or something else where they had Mo Williams, Lillard, and Matthews, but not very often, because Matthews is too small to defend most SFs in the league.

The player you're thinking of that outplayed Parsons was Batum. Matthews got his points because the Blazers offense was specifically targeting Harden. When they switched Harden off Matthews because he was getting beat too bad, the Blazers would do stuff like run plays for Robin Lopez where Houston was trying to hide Harden.

But anyway -- to the point at hand, Parsons is a good player. The only question is if he's $15M good, but really that's just the tax Cuban seems willing to pay in order to pry him away as a restricted free agent.

edit: and jeezuz, Matthews NEVER said he was "the best SF". You're delusional. It was Parsons that said that, which ruffled Blazers' fans feathers because they knew it was Batum.

I know it's easy to beat up on the guy...But dude actually showed up in that series. Without him they wouldn't even have won two games...

Now Harden? Dude should keep his mouth shut. He still got milk on his breath....

Dwight manned up (and carried Houston offensively for stretches, esp game 6, which is exactly what people said he wasn't capable of doing) while Harden was clanking shots and scratching his beard quizzically as he missed yet another defensive rotation/switch/assignment.

and i actually think the melo comp is a good one. I think he has a similar career. he won't rebound like Melo, but eventually I'm pretty sure he gets the message that you should at least try on defense, at which point he'll be better on defense than Melo was.

And you missed the memo, Melo has gone from overrated to underrated. People are now overplaying his flaws and not giving him love for the good shit he does.

If a guy can score and nothing else, he is not going to lead your team to the top. Even guys were a little more multi-dimensional sort of proved that. To me, if Harden can't be the top guy on a championship team, then there is no way he can be a top 5 player in the league. He is an excellent offensive player though, I'm not trying to discount him as a multi-faceted scorer who also gets to the line.
