"In comparison, the NFL suspended the Colts' Robert Mathis four games for using an infertility drug, and suspended Josh Gordon an entire year for smoking marijuana. The Dolphins suspended Richie Incognito for eight games because of harassment that, while severe and constant, apparently never turned physical.

On the other side of the coin, Colts owner Jim Irsay remains unpunished following his arrest for DUI and possession of a controlled substance. Oh, and of course, Michael Sam will supposedly be a huge "distraction" because of whom he chose to embrace on draft day. Just a little perspective on how the NFL works today."

although he's a conduit for the owners, the terms for suspension are clearly defined and were agreed upon by the NFLPA during the last CBA. Goodell is not pulling these weed suspensions out of thin air.

he is with everything else though, and that's a reflection on him and how weak the players' union is.

his hands are tied about drugs, fine, but then he can use those lengths as a basis to decide length of punishment for far greater offenses.

based on the owners definition of the evils of weed, ray rice shouldn't play this year.

the drug policy is likely more spelled out and comprehensive because of PEDs, etc so they basically throw a wide net and suspend for anything not on the approved list. I'm not sure how well their personal conduct policy is spelled out in areas like domestic disputes, etc where it's more a law enforcement matter. Never really took the time to read thru their agreement.

40. "Was there discretion to suspend Rice for more games?"
In response to Reply # 29

If so, then your point is pretty much moot. If anything, the minimum sentencing for other stuff provides some context for the length of discretionary suspensions. And didn't Rapelisberger get six games for allegations alone?

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

If the district attorney and the ACPD can't prove what happened, and Rice plead not guilty and pretty much won his case, AND his now wife didn't even press charges, what more can Goddell do?

You don't want to start punishing dudes for what people THINK happened...that will lead down a really slippery slope

and here's my biggest issue... if he's seen the video, which he has...

what justifies 2 games? to me the video should show either he knocked her out, or some how he like pushed her away and she hit her head and passed out... if it's the defense push he really deserves 0... if he swung, he deserves way more then 2... so why just 2?

Rice got a slap on the wrist.
Since when are young rich black man given a pass?

Evidence was certainly lacking which is why it appears rice is getting off easy.

MFers realy quick to jump to a conclusion

THIS HASN'T GONE TO TRIAL YET

what I've heard *allegedly*, he hit her and she fell and hit her head

which is what rendered her unconscious

you know, like Denzel in he got game

of course, dragging a lifeless body out of an elevator is not a good look

but folks are real quick to act like he just hit her with the 1,2 and knocked her the fuck out

could be a whole different scenario than what people are alleging

jus sayin'

the, he should sit for 8 games talk is a little premature

considering he hasn't been convicted of anything yet

is it possible the 2 game suspension is for being involved in the incident

and the NFL could add games if he does get convicted?

jus askin'

actually, I'm hearing she has a history of coming at him

with weapons *allegedly*

I'm assuming a situation where he was provoked to defend himself

if she came at him

that's a much different scenario than the picture being painted

of some testosterone jacked football player hitting a defenseless woman with the one hitter quitter

anyway, my point was

for not knowing the actions that lead up to the incident

alot of folks are filling in the blanks

I'm more interested in the absence of Jim Irsay outrage

I like how you've progressed from "he only hit her once" to "she has a history of attacking him with weapons."

Can't wait for your follow up "Rumor has it she cast black magicks on him and she actually used him as a vessel with which to hit herself."

Maybe Ray Rice beat her unconscious.

Maybe she just got cast as a lifeless corpse in a movie and is a really serious method actor who instinctively turns it on in elevators.

We have no way of knowing for sure, and both scenarios are just as likely.

The fuck is he even talking about?

http://deadspin.com/first-take-discusses-a-womans-responsibility-to-avoid-b-1610831462

It's not about him, then. It's about you, and here's what I mean by that. We keep talking about the guys. We know you have no business putting your hands on a woman. I don't know how many times I got to reiterate that. But as a man who was raised by women, see I know what I'm going to do if somebody touches a female member of my family. I know what I'm going to do, I know what my boys are going to do. I know what, I'm going to have to remind myself that I work for the Worldwide Leader, I'm going to have to get law enforcement officials involved because of what I'm going to be tempted to do.

But what I've tried to employ the female members of my family, some of who you all met and talked to and what have you, is that again, and this what, I've done this all my life, let's make sure we don't do anything to provoke wrong actions, because if I come, or somebody else come, whether it's law enforcement officials, your brother or the fellas that you know, if we come after somebody has put their hands on you, it doesn't negate the fact that they already put their hands on you. So let's try to make sure that we can do our part in making sure that that doesn't happen. Now you got some dudes that are just horrible and they're going to do it anyway, and there's never an excuse to put your hands on a woman. But domestic violence or whatever the case may be, with men putting their hands on women, is obviously a very real, real issue in our society. And I think that just talking about what guys shouldn't do, we got to also make sure that you can do your part to do whatever you can do to make, to try to make sure it doesn't happen.

We know they're wrong. We know they're criminals. We know they probably deserve to be in jail. In Ray Rice's case, he probably deserves more than a 2-game suspension which we both acknowledged. But at the same time, we also have to make sure that we learn as much as we can about elements of provocation. Not that there's real provocation, but the elements of provocation, you got to make sure that you address them, because we've got to do is do what we can to try to prevent the situation from happening in any way. And I don't think that's broached enough, is all I'm saying. No point of blame.

This feels weird to say out loud because I never really thought of it in these terms, but the Muppets are apparently a sacred cow for me. The movie always looked funny enough, but I just don't really want a darkly comic take on the same idea.

honestly (at least in the black community) women being physically violent with men has become a huge problem. I personally know 6 women who on multiple occasions have beat (with fist and or objects) and even stabbed their boyfriends/husbands. I only know personally one couple where the husband has been violent. Thats a problem. The Jay-Z Solange episode is a perfect example of the double standard. If that bodyguard was holding J back as he tried to beat on Solange there would be out rage. But since its her on him its funny. So I think that is what Steve A was trying to shed light on. The problem is....
1)That was not the time to do it.
2)Usually in cases when women are abusive the man is not physical back. (All the women I mentioned above, their men never hit them back. They either walked out, called the police, or took the beating because they were taught not to hit women)
So like I said I think his heart/mind was in the right place, but bad timing and poor choice of words. We need to teach our sons never to hit a woman.... but we also need to teach our daughters the same thing.

I don't think he's blaming the women, but saying that in reality, women must be cautious because they have a lot to lose in that situation. Even if the offender is arrested, prosecuted etc, the women still has to deal with the physical and mental ramifications of being assaulted.

i'm sure rice is a thick necked dickhead
but comparing this violation to a drug violation clearly outlined in the CBA is dumb
the victim didn't cooperate with authorities, they reconciled, and charges were dropped
i'm not trying make any assumptions about developments in their relationship but the marriage suggests they moved on apparently
2 games is enough imo.
if it happens again throw the book at rice

has turned into some "letter of the law" shit that doesn't improve either player's public reputations or the quality of people in the league. instead it's disproportionately punished players who do things that are debatably bad but easy to discover versus players who do things (and surely SOME of them have done things) that are extremely bad but hard to prove.

From the slow mo it looks like he smutted her face, and being a brollic nfl player, didn't pull the swing and she hit her face on the elevator wall which knocked her out.

But none the less, yes very disturbing. He looked anxious to get her alone on that elevator so he could turn up on her. Smh

*edit* Then again, just watched it again and that may have been a closed fist punch. I'm watching on a phone though so hard to tell. Dude probably should have been suspended for the year.

Per Peter King on July 29: "There is one other thing I did not write or refer to, and that is the other videotape the NFL and some Ravens officials have seen, from the security camera inside the elevator at the time of the physical altercation between Rice and his fiancée. I have heard reports of what is on the video, but because I could not confirm them and because of the sensitivity of the case, I never speculated on the video in my writing, because I don’t think it is fair in an incendiary case like this one to use something I cannot confirm with more than one person. I cannot say any more, because I did not see the tape. I saw only the damning tape of Rice pulling his unconscious fiancée out of the elevator."

http://mmqb.si.com/2014/07/29/jordan-gross-weight-retirement-panthers/2/

Goddell's justification for the weak punishment was to have all his mouthpiece journalists say something to the effect of "Well, the NFL knows what happened in the elevator, and, trust us, it's not as bad as you think." The fucking Ravens' official twitter said "Janay Rice says she deeply regrets the role that she played the night of the incident."

https://twitter.com/Ravens/status/469918292061061120

Fuck Goddell, fuck the Ravens, fuck the NFL, and double-fuck Ray Rice.

In response to Reply # 103

http://deadspin.com/someone-is-lying-about-whether-the-nfl-saw-the-ray-rice-1631901404

Relevant Quote:
"There are three possible explanations here. The first is that every single reporter who said the NFL had seen the video was lying. This seems unlikely, since they were all telling the same lie, both for public consumption and in their off-the-record talks with us.

The second is that the NFL was lying to all of the top football reporters back then about having seen the video, in some attempt to smear Janay Palmer.

The third is that the NFL is lying now about not having seen the video—that league officials saw what everyone has now seen, for whatever reason actually found it exculpatory, and are now making false claims to protect the league's image. This interpretation is supported by an employee of the Revel, the Atlantic City casino where the fight took place. He tells TMZ that the NFL saw the footage before disciplining Rice.

Whatever the case, it's almost certain that the NFL lied at some stage here, and that the league played a handful of its most loyal reporters in the process, suborning them into a smear campaign against a victim of domestic violence. Those reporters, who regularly and uncritically pass along the league's party line but are rarely exposed like this, are the ones who look foolish now. Maybe it's time for them to cut these particular puppet strings and name the sources who burned them so badly, which would do something to show that they're reporters, and not stooges. If you'd like to outsource the job to us, feel free to email us."

I think this is what happened. They probably thought the public would never see that footage and once we did, you know the rest. They gotta kick son out for a season at the least.

and the NFL won't have to act as quickly. I'm guessing he will be retroactively punished under the new standards and miss half the season.

I'm sure other women have been hit by nfl players but given how public this has become and how much of a blunder it has been for the league whatever measures taken need to be drastic.

He ought to just be released and the stench will be so strong it would be extremely unlikely anyone will give him a chance some place else. It makes too much sense not to. He sucked last year and he's still getting paid a high salary. His prime years are past and he would have end up cut anyway if he didn't agree to a reduced salary.

By acting quickly the Ravens come out of this looking better than they ever have in this mess and the NFL won't have to worry about his sorry ass again.

Rice signed a big deal before last season - cutting him would be a huge blow to our cap in 2015-16 when we'd need to resign Torrey Smith, Jimmy Smith, and possibly Haloti Ngata. I could see them perhaps levying a suspension of their own on top of the league's punishment or deactivating him after Week 3 and letting him sit and cutting him at season's end for "football reasons"...sort of like what happened to TO.

But the Ravens can be very tone deaf and "fuck what you think" when it comes to the moves they make. Hell, I follow them on FB and they're still posting happy go lucky stuff after a flat performance yesterday in anticipation of Steelers week. They need to say something, but I can understand them taking their time with it. Rice is a foundational player for the team and there's several dominoes that would fall if any more punishment or separation is doled out.

Streets won't let me chill.

..ray has a conditional plea

if he completes his probationary period without incident, the charges will be dismissed/dropped.

perhaps the conduct policy has a clause for this?

if not, ravens might have to bite the bullet on this.

Guaranteed they had access to that elevator footage... and they STILL chose only a two-game suspension! Did they watch it and make that decision, or did they decide they didn't want to watch it to remain blissfully ignorant? How could they have not known it would eventually leak? Are they naive? Flat-out stupid?

It's not like Bountygate or Spygate or the others, in which all we have are reports. Here, we have the visual of a man pummeling his wife unconscious, which will play on TV with the frequency of the Michael Sam kiss, with every report accompanied by, "The NFL, after seeing this footage, determined a 2-game suspension was appropriate."

And how the nfl tried and failed to sweep this under the rug, I can only imagine what is on those Patriot spy gate videos.

It wouldn't shock me that those videos were cut and edited in a way that the Pats knew exactly what plays teams were going to run to give them a very significant competitive advantage.

and I think forever is more likely. Goodell is going to make a huge example of him if he tries to come back next fall, and the distraction *will* be huge for whatever team even brings him in for a tryout. all the media -- not just the sports media -- will flock to any news of a "Ray Rice comeback". the risk of alienating your own fanbase and even current team is too huge for an organization.

I don't think the public will be satisfied unless he served real jail time.

Teams don't want that bad press. If you're talking about Stallworth, that was accidental. Different circumstances. Ray Rice was pretty sorry last year, I doubt he'll be better a year from now. RBs are more easily replaceable, no team will sign a back on his last legs and endure the bad press that comes with it. It's not worth it.

In response to Reply # 144

The situations certainly dont overlap, but i think that sports teams have repeatedly shown that they will give guys second chances (Stallworth, Brent, Vick, Incognito, Kobe) if the player shows remorse.

I am not saying he'll make a team, but if for example, he is reinstated after the season with a year long ban through next season, enough time will have passed and enough scandals will have gone through the news cycle that i think someone will let him try to be their 3rd down back.

If palmer sticks with rice and rice goes to counseling, makes sizable donations to appropriate charities, and becomes a spokesman against domestic violence, people will move on and i can see him getting a shot in camp.

Baltimore is playing the victim now too, saying Rice lied to them, but they stood behind their player from day one. scummy organization.

http://www.baltimoreravens.com/news/article-1/Byrne-Identity-I-Like-Ray-Rice/f618f957-e03f-4fc6-919e-638552b14c2b

We Were Surprised

If you had asked me on Feb. 1 to name five Ravens players I would never expect to receive a call at 3:00 in the morning about doing something illegal, Ray Rice would be on the list – EASILY.

I would have said: “Ray’s a good guy. He’s smart. He might be the most popular person in our building. Need help with a community event or a player to lift a person in need, especially a child? Ray is one of the guys who says, ‘Yes, I’ll help.’”

I liked Ray Rice a lot then. I like Ray Rice a lot today.

Clearly Ray has been scrutinized. He has been reviewed in a court of law and in the court of public opinion. The NFL punished Ray Rice with a two-game suspension and a third game check. He will lose 3/17 of his salary.

After a thorough legal review, a New Jersey judge placed Rice in a diversionary program that will allow his record of charges to be expunged if he maintains his good citizenship for a year.

Like many of us, Ray Rice had a moment in his life he wishes he could take back.

But, he can’t. He got himself into that situation, and he’s paying for it. And, he deserves this public and private flogging and the punishments that have come with it. Ray knows that better than anyone.

Team Owner Steve Bisciotti, our President Dick Cass, General Manager Ozzie Newsome and I all have sons. (Dick and I also each have a daughter.) We know what it is to be a parent. We know what it is to support a child after a mistake. We know the importance of turning the situation around and becoming better. We know turning your back on a loved one in a time of need is not what families do.

Bisciotti Weighs In

When we found out about Ray's punishment during yesterday morning's practice, I told Steve that I wanted to write about Ray Rice and how much respect I have for him. I wasn't sure it was my place or the team's to talk more about Ray right now. I thought the subject was so sensitive to the franchise that I should check with the owner, a man with great insights.

"That's your call," Bisciotti told me. "I don't think Ray needs it, and I don't think you'll change the minds of those who don't want to have anything to do with Ray. ... How sad we all are that he tarnished his image. No one outside, I've learned, can understand how we look at these guys as our sons and close friends as opposed to just employees.

"I saw that clearly when we lost the AFC championship at New England (at the end of the 2011 season)," the owner continued. "I had friends tell me, 'You must hate Lee Evans or Billy Cundiff. They cost you a trip to the Super Bowl.' It was the opposite – we felt for Lee and Billy. I wished that they'd get another chance. I felt the need to protect them like I would one of my sons. It's not like that in my other businesses.

"Don't we all have days or moments or periods in our life we regret? Ray showed great character for the six years I've known him. He has shown remorse after a bad incident. It was out of character. I don't think now is the time to abandon him. You say we are a Ravens' family. I've come to believe that."

Rice Alone

What I attempt to do with this blog is lift the veil on the Ravens, try to share with fans some of what takes place that media doesn't see or care to cover. Here are two stories about Rice since the incident with his now wife Janay. I share them not to try to get sympathy for Rice. I share them to let you see what we see.

Two weeks after the casino incident, I came to our Under Armour Performance Center for a racquetball game against former Raven Bennie Thompson. It was a bleak, cloudy Saturday morning. I cut through the mostly dark weight room on my way to the court.

I heard the clang of a weight in the corner. When I looked to see who was there, it was Ray. "What are you doing here?" I asked him and joked that he could turn on the lights.

A subdued Rice said: "I've been trying to come in the building and work out when no one is here. I'm not sure anyone wants to see me. I'm so sorry, and I'm embarrassed. And, I don't want to make any of the women feel uncomfortable."

Wow.

Rice then told me that he wanted to say something publicly, but I explained that his lawyer had asked us not to say anything and to encourage Ray to do the same. "I've got some notes on things I want to say. I want to apologize," Rice said.

On May 22, Ravens Director Of Player Development Harry Swayne had an expert on bullying, Paul Coughlin, speak to our rookies as part of our continuing education for all of our first-year players. Some of you may be familiar with Coughlin, who regularly is interviewed on national news as a foremost authority on the bullying issue. (In fact, when I talked with Coughlin this morning, he was lecturing to schools in Tanzania – the country – about bullying.)

Coughlin asked Swayne if Rice was in the building on that May day. He was, and the two spent some time together. "I wanted to encourage Ray to continue his campaign against bullying," Coughlin said. "Ray is one of the most prominent and active voices in the anti-bullying movement. I told him that from what I understood about his incident with his wife that it was not a form of bullying. Bullying harms and diminishes life itself. A bully intends to harm and continues to do that. It seemed Ray had a conflict with his wife that he regretted, and when he told me about the counseling he was receiving, I sensed a person who knew he made a mistake and was determined to bounce back."

Swayne remembers the conversation. "When Paul told Ray that he could still and should continue his anti-bullying campaign, tears came to Ray's eyes."

Coughlin recalled the scene: "Ray did tear up. Maybe it was the first time that he felt hope and redemption since the incident. Maybe he's a person who does want to help and didn't think anyone would listen. I sensed a change in his countenance."

When I told Bisciotti at the end of our conversation yesterday that "I think I am going to write that blog about Ray," Steve smiled and said: "Is it a flaw for us that we support our players in tough times? If it is, I'm OK with that."

So am I.

Talk with you next week. I promise it will be about football.

IF they did see it.... I'm assuming they looked at the fact that those look like 2 left handed slaps to the face. The first one came after she seemingly pushed him in the face....

if they saw that and only suspended him for 2 games....that's what I assume was the reasoning..it was slaps not punches, she initiated the altercation..... and she was knocked out because she charged him...he slapped her...and her head hit the rail...

ok.... that view may look like it's softening what Ray did...but to me it's still an accurate summation of what happened..

but the problem is that most people...including myself...seeing this..even if it was slaps.... that was still worth more than a 2 game suspension....

that was worth 6-8 games IMO....

but the commish has a problem now.... He is gonna have to be honest about whether he saw that...the Ravens too. If the reasoning for 2 games is what they used...then he needs to be honest about that also...

if his wife's statement played a part in why only 2 games...he's got to say that too..

either way...Goodell has got to come clean on whether he saw this or not..and explain what his reasoning was for only 2 games..

I think I see the reasoning...but I just don't agree with it now.

I actually guessed that her being knocked out didn't happen from a punch ...I figured she hit her head on something....otherwise Ray would have been charged with Felony assault.

but my guess was that they were in a real tussle and she fell....but seeing this..it really wasn't like that...

the other problematic part of it..is Ray's demeanor after she was out... he kind of bumps her with his foot to kind of say "get up"..and didn't bend down to check on her until after he was outside the elevator for people to see...

Goodell and the Ravens got some explaining to do.

If they watched it and were okay with it (which is what they told Mort and King and everyone earlier this summer, when they told them the whole video is the reason he only got two games,) the NFL's lying today when they said they didn't see it.

If the NFL's telling the truth today, everything they told those guys was a lie.

Two people walk into an elevator, only one walks out, and the other NOT MOVING.

That alone is enough for a THOROUGH investigation of the events, interviewing witnesses, reviewing all footage, using all the available evidence to determine what happened.

No way in fucking hell the NFL can't get WHAT it wants, IF it wanted it in the first place. I don't need to research whether it or the Ravens reviewed the footage to know that they COULD HAVE. I mean to take his word that he was defending himself. Where were his fucking bruises?

He is ONLY gone because this footage was there. Otherwise, it's back page news and business as usual. That's what's scary.

I don't feel any different having seen the video. The fact that she married this dude after this shit says more about her than it does him. Who, if anyone actually believes this is the first physical altercation they have had? And now that he's jobless and humiliated he goes home to his wife and daughter? Man oh man.

So is we're giving him the benefit of the doubt, she could have been passed out before. Maybe she was drunk or something. Obviously that want the case but point is the video today changes that.

As far as her still marrying him, it's befuddling, but who knows her motivations. Maybe she felt she was so close to payday she didn't want to blow it. Maybe he didn't prenup. Who knows.

172. "Whitlock: Goodell should step down for "epic failure" (SWIPE)"
In response to Reply # 0

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/11488363/jason-whitlock-latest-ray-rice-developments

Roger Goodell's epic failure

As someone who publicly defended NFL commissioner Roger Goodell's two-game suspension of Ray Rice for domestic violence, let me start by acknowledging that the truth has revealed my defense to be horribly misplaced.

The inside-the-elevator video shows Rice, a running back for the Ravens, provoking, brutally assaulting and then casually and callously standing over his knocked-out fiancée (who is now his wife). His actions are sickening in their depravity and confirm a worst-case-scenario narrative I was reluctant to believe after seeing only the previously released, outside-the-elevator video.

I thought the full video would explain why: why police originally charged Ray and Janay with simple assault; why the prosecutor allowed Ray to enter a diversion program; why Janay apologized for her role; why Janay chose to marry Ray; why the Ravens enthusiastically supported Rice and used their facilities in helping him rehabilitate his image; why Goodell suspended Rice for only two games.

I wrongly and naively thought that she was the aggressor in the attack, that Rice reflexively shoved her to fend her off and she slipped, fell and hit her head. I did not think a man could sucker-punch a woman on tape and have the police, a prosecutor, the victim and the image-conscious NFL all work to treat the assaulter in a sympathetic fashion.

I did not think sexism could manifest itself this brazenly in 2014. Clearly, I was wrong. Clearly, as it relates to domestic violence and sexism, America has made far less progress than I thought. Baltimore's decision Monday to release Rice and the league's decision to suspend him indefinitely are not progress.

The Rice crime captured on video is reprehensible. Even Rice's and Goodell's original harshest critics -- people who called for a six- or eight-game suspension -- are shocked by the video's content. Anyone who watches this video must question whether Rice should ever be allowed to play again.

However, the real story here is the reaction to Rice's crime by police, the prosecutor, Ray and Janay Rice, the Baltimore Ravens and Roger Goodell. You could easily argue that the reaction is as reprehensible as the original crime because the reaction fosters the crime.

What we saw on video warranted prosecution, jail time and an eight-game or season-long suspension. But now the consequences need to be much worse and more far-reaching. It's no longer just about Ray Rice. It's about addressing the culture that allowed and/or orchestrated Rice sitting next to Janay as she apologized for her role in Ray sucker-punching her for no reason. The police and the prosecutor should've publicly objected to that public-relations farce. The citizens of Atlantic City, New Jersey, should hold those taxpayer-funded officials accountable for their dereliction of duty.

Ray Rice needs to be held accountable, too. He participated in that lie. He let his then-fiancée take responsibility for his failing and criminality. His unwillingness to own his mistake put his employer and the league in a difficult position. Had he been transparent with the Ravens and the NFL and worked with them to review the video, they likely would've handed Rice a more significant penalty and avoided a summer of controversy. Rice's cowardice should put his professional future in jeopardy.

But Rice's irresponsibility does not exonerate the Ravens or Goodell. Nor does their insistence that they had no access to the elevator video until TMZ released it Monday morning.

Ray Rice committed a crime. People who commit crimes are generally reluctant to tell on themselves. Rice's cowardice and apparent dishonesty are not surprising. The NFL's apparent willful ignorance about what happened inside the elevator is quite surprising. It's difficult to believe TMZ has better investigators than the multibillion-dollar NFL.

Goodell elected himself the league's top cop. Is he Barney Fife? Did he not talk to the police or hotel security personnel who saw the tape?

Roger Goodell
Allison Joyce/Getty Images
Roger Goodell will have trouble holding off the fallout from his handling of the Ray Rice incident.
Surely, as a matter of criminal procedure, Rice and his attorneys had access to the video as part of "discovery." Or maybe I've watched too many episodes of "Law & Order"? Assuming Rice and his attorneys had access to the video, given Goodell's unchecked power, he could've easily compelled Rice to hand it over. And, if Rice and his handlers were reluctant to do so, it would've been a damning piece of evidence that the video was damning.

Weeks ago, when Keith Olbermann used the Rice suspension as justification for calling for Goodell's removal as commissioner, I thought Olbermann was going way too far.

I was wrong.

This is incompetence at a confidence-shaking level. I've argued from the outset of the NFL's personal-conduct policy in 2007 that Goodell made a huge mistake appointing himself the czar of discipline. By doing so, by playing to the crowd that clamored for public NFL discipline of private matters, he put himself at odds with the league's players, turned up the spotlight on off-the-field issues and placed himself in a situation that leads to where we are today.

Less than 24 hours after the first Sunday of the NFL season, a player who didn't touch the field or enter a stadium is the topic of conversation.

That is not a complaint. I'm a sports columnist who specializes in social commentary. I want these topics explored. As an American citizen and a sports fan, I'm concerned about our culture and sports' positive and negative impact on our culture.

I have an agenda different from Goodell's. His job is to protect the NFL brand. It's my belief he took on the role as czar of discipline -- rather than delegating it -- as a way of promoting his own brand. He loved the buzz of being the guy cracking down on out-of-control professional athletes.

But there's a reason the president appoints an attorney general. Crime and punishment are messy and complicated. They require a singular focus so major screwups are avoided, and the president's office needs distance from the inevitable mistakes. There have been 82 U.S. attorneys general and only 44 U.S. presidents. When the politics get tough, the attorney general is often replaced.

Goodell created this mess a long time ago. He should soon follow Ray Rice in looking for a new line of work.

whose job is to think of the big picture.

i can understand the appeal of having a man in charge of everything with the buck stopping there, but goodell's job is to make the owners happy. that's never going to change. and he's good at that part of his job.

they need someone who is less accountable to that perspective who can handle discipline and issues like safety/head injuries with the long term in mind.

http://m.tmz.com/#Article/2014/09/09/nfl-ray-rice-video-elevator-attack-fiancee-casino-footage

The NFL NEVER contacted the casino to request video of Ray Rice brutalizing his fiancee ... TMZ Sports has learned. Commissioner Rodger Goodell made his disciplinary decision in the dark, which raises the question ... Is that the way he wanted it?

Sources connected with the Revel Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City tell TMZ Sports ... NO ONE from the NFL ever asked for the video inside the elevator ... video that was compelling enough to get Rice instantly fired.

Sources who worked at the casino at the time of the incident tell us ... if the NFL had asked for the video, they would have gladly complied.

Without video ... Goodell blindly justified the initial 2-game suspension, based on the only evidence they had -- from the 2 people in the elevator, who called it mutual combat.

Multiple sources tell TMZ Sports ... the casino made a copy of the elevator surveillance video for police. We're also told Rice's lawyer had a copy of the video which he got in the criminal case.

An NFL source tells us they requested "any and all information" from law enforcement in the criminal case but got nothing because it was a pending case. But the NFL had other options ... namely going to the casino or Rice's lawyer -- but the NFL never bothered to ask.

BTW ... it may sound crazy for Rice's lawyer to voluntarily hand over the video, but the NFL had a lot of leverage ... in the form of severe penalties if Rice didn't ante up the tape.

So the question ... does the NFL have incompetent investigators, or was it just easier to protect a player and turn a blind eye to video that would have forced Goodell's hand? Both scenarios are pretty disgusting.

and their interview of her was done with Ray in the room, this is almost as bad as seeing the video and then deciding on 2 games, and still warrants Goodell stepping down/getting fired.

also, wtf police? you don't need her to press charges if you have this video. in fact, is there a domestic abuse case with MORE evidence than this one? outside of hitting her IN the police station this is about as clear-cut as it gets.

The NFL says they asked the NJ State Police for the video and they didn't give it to them. The NJ State Police say they only have jurisdiction on what happens on the Casino's floor, and that Atlantic City PD has jurisdiction of what happens in the elevators, so they never had the tape to give.

Basically it's turned into a gigantic cluster-fuck for everyone involved.

My guess is that the state PD is charge of the gaming area itself, whereas the city PD takes care of the rest of the hotel.

wouldn't be surprised if this jurisdictional clusterfuck was caused, at least in part by:
1. Christie/allies intervening because they didn't want more bad news for Revel after it was one of the dumbest, biggest boondoggles evah while he wants to be prez
2. the undeniably stupid design of Revel that both architecture critics and gaming consultants thought was unconsciousably confusing and bad.

that the state police was all like 'we don't got it.'

And then didn't say it's local police jurisdiction? Or that the NFL or anyone else didn't reach out to the local police as a follow-up?

Someone saw the video in July and told Chris Mortensen what was on it.

I don't buy this 'we asked and they didn't have it' line.

To take something away from the man I love that has worked his ass off for all his life just to gain ratings is a horrific. THIS IS OUR LIFE! What don't you all get. Unfortunately, this is the pretty standard attitude of most domestic assault victims.

It's why on Cops you always see the girl hanging out of the trailer with a bloody lip yelling, "PLEASE DON'T TAIK HEE-UM AWAY! I LOVE HEE-UM!"

They're either scared for their life, or they have serious, deep-rooted abandonment issues.

Ironically had he got the suspension right from the beginning him and Rice probably could have survived this.

Had he suspended him for the season originally.

from the suspension to the public vitriol.

Hitting a woman, your woman is def callous in and of itself, however, if it wasn't for his callousness after the fact, this probably wouldn't even have gotten out. Like, if he woulda just picked her up and carried her to their room, no one in the hotel would have necessarily thought anything of it and its possible that the elevator footage wouldn't have even been noticed by security. He coulda just passed it off as her being sick/drunk to any passerbys.

dude blew up his own spot.

what would Michael Pittman have gotten?

Dude is one of the worst scumbags in recent history. Makes Ray Rice look like Gandhi.

And I remember Mike Shanahan brought him to DC as a "mentor" one year.

His THIRD incident was where he tried to run his wife off the road, with their kids in her car.

I cannot even keep TRACK of all the famous men accused of committing domestic violence, much less just the NFL. Ray Rice is no victim, but, similar to Chris Brown at the time of when he beat Rihanna, he is being treated like the FIRST person to ever beat a woman. Ironically, Chris Brown is quite popular again, in large part due to the women supporting him in DROVES.

Jason Kidd punched Joumana in the fucking face in front of their kids I believe and he's now the coach of the Nets.

Leonard Little fucking killed someone and never even missed an entire season, NEVER EVEN WENT TO JAIL.

Ray SHOULD have another chance to play football, if he's still capable and seeks the proper counseling and rehabilitation for his violence and character issues. What is important in this and one positive is that because this is so public, unlike other cats who receded in the background, he actually has the opportunity AND WILL BE LOOKED AT to get himself right.

there is no copping pleas whatsoever, it's pointing out all the other cases when there was more than enough evidence to dole out punishment to the abusers. it shouldn't TAKE a video for actions to be made. the majority of women who get their asses kicked will NEVER have the luxury of a camera to tell the story.

most of the time these things are prosecuted because the women don't cooperate for various reasons. Some are motivated by fear, some are motivated by greed.

Many times if the woman refuses to testify there's no case. Usually if it is a spouse they can't be forced to testify against their husband.

If the NFL had suspended Ray Rice for 6-8 games initially there probably would have been major pushback from the players union because it would have been unprecedented. The 2 games wasn't enough and there was backlash. When the 2nd tape came out they looked foolish and had to overcorrect and there was nothing the players union could do about at that point without making themselves look bad.

Floyd Mayweather Thinks The NFL Was Too Hard On Ray Rice

Boxer and serial batterer of women Floyd Mayweather said yesterday that he doesn't think it was fair that Ray Rice received more than the initial two-game suspension, and that the NFL overreacted to video of Rice cold-cocking his fiancée.

"I think there's a lot worse things that go on in other people's households, also," Mayweather said. "It's just not caught on video, if that's safe to say."

Mayweather, who has been convicted of, pleaded guilty or no contest to, or pleaded down from at least 15 combined counts of domestic violence, battery, harassment, stalking, and violating a protective order, said that he himself has been falsely accused before.

"Like I've said in the past, no bumps, no bruises, no nothing," Mayweather said. "With O.J. and Nicole, you seen pictures. With Chris Brown and Rihanna, you seen pictures. With (Chad) Ochocinco and Evelyn, you seen pictures. You guys have yet to see any pictures of a battered woman, a woman who says she was kicked and beaten (by Mayweather). So I just live my life and try to stay positive, and try to become a better person each and every day."

Mayweather fights this Saturday, and you really ought to read this before then.

While the video is jarring, the police report accurately describes the events in the elevator ("specifically by striking her with his hand, rendering her unconscious"). The NFL had that information as well as the video of him callously dragging her out of the elevator before it initially suspended Rice two games.

NFLPA has been noticeably silent on the Rice matter and I wonder if they are going to step up to defend him or just hope this goes away quietly.

Lord knows Rice's lawyer is getting his lawsuit ready.

AP Newsbreak: Source says Rice video sent to NFL
By ROB MAADDI
— Sep. 10, 2014 4:54 PM EDT

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — A law enforcement official says he sent a video of Ray Rice punching his then-fiancee to an NFL executive three months ago, while league officers have insisted they didn't see the violent images until this week.

The person played The Associated Press a 12-second voicemail from an NFL office number on April 9 confirming the video arrived. A female voice expresses thanks and says: "You're right. It's terrible."

The law enforcement official, speaking to the AP on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing investigation, says he had no further communication with any NFL employee and can't confirm anyone watched the video. The person said they were unauthorized to release the video but shared it unsolicited, because they wanted the NFL to have it before deciding on Rice's punishment.

The NFL has repeatedly said it asked for but could not obtain the video of Rice hitting Janay Palmer — who is now his wife — at an Atlantic City casino in February.

The league says it has no record of the video, and no one in the league office had seen it until TMZ released it. When asked about the voicemail Wednesday, NFL officials repeated their assertion that no league official had seen the video before Monday.

The person said he sent a DVD copy of the security camera video to an NFL office and included his contact information. He asked the AP not to release the name of the NFL executive, for fear that the information would identify the law enforcement official as the source.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell initially suspended Rice for two games following the February incident, but the Ravens released Rice on Monday and the NFL suspended him indefinitely after the website TMZ released the video.

Goodell told CBS on Tuesday that "no one in the NFL, to my knowledge" had seen a new video of what happened on the elevator until it was posted online.

"We assumed that there was a video. We asked for video. But we were never granted that opportunity," Goodell said.

In a memo to the NFL's 32 teams on Wednesday, Goodell said that the league asked law enforcement for the video, but not the casino. "In the context of a criminal investigation, information obtained outside of law enforcement that has not been tested by prosecutors or by the court system is not necessarily a reliable basis for imposing league discipline," he wrote.

The video, shown to the AP on Monday, is slightly longer than the TMZ version, and includes some audio.

Rice and Janay Palmer — now Janay Rice — can be heard shouting obscenities at each other, and she appears to spit at Rice right before he throws a brutal punch. After she collapses, he drags her out of the elevator and is met by some hotel staff. One of them can be heard saying, "She's drunk, right?" And then, "No cops."

Rice had been charged with felony aggravated assault in the case, but in May he was accepted into a pretrial intervention program that allowed him to avoid jail time and could lead to the charge being purged from his record. A prominent New Jersey lawmaker called Tuesday for that decision to be reviewed.

Hours after portions of the video were made public by TMZ, Goodell suspended Rice indefinitely and Baltimore terminated his contract. He had originally been suspended for two games, and team officials had praised him for his apologies and actions after his arrest for aggravated assault.

Goodell and team officials said they were taking more severe action because of the violence in the video.

...Goodell told all his flunkies/suboardinates, "If we get the tape, I don't want to see it, I don't want to know what's on it, and I don't even want to know we received it."

It wouldn't shock me if he tried to set up a wall of "plausible deniability" so he could proclaim his ignorance. And if it did come out that they received the tape, he could just blame his lackeys for not keeping him informed.

However, there's still a 90% chance that he saw the tape and he's been lying his ass off the whole time.

"No one in the NFL, to my knowledge" had seen the video, even though he confirms they requested it. They'd have a hard proving Goodell actually did see it, unless one of his flunkies turned on him. I doubt that's going to happen, because it's not like there's any sort of real investigation going on regarding the NFL's handling of the incident.

You cant prove he saw it and like someone above said...who on the inside is gonna say RG saw it?

He say's he didn't see it, and unless someone has a video of him watching the video....deny deny deny

Bet money ain't NO EMAILS, ain't no phone convos, no trail of nothing.

Deny until they stop asking.

Point blank...the victim was beggin' RG to go easy, RG thought 'well....if she cool, and Rice says he's sorry....2 games...but dont do it again Ray!'

Had he said 6 games from the jump, this wouldn't even be news.

But RG went easy....and it would be crazy for him to get let go for going to easy when people used to complain he is way too harsh.

Cant win....lol

maybe the baltimore owner got on the phone and said "we need him in there". still seems WAY too risky to comply though, even if he works in the owners' interest. as others have said, if he just gives rice 6-8 games this isn't an issue, and the ravens still get rice back at some point in the season.

In response to Reply # 0

http://deadspin.com/stephen-a-smith-doesnt-think-the-nfl-has-a-domestic-vi-1633022629

Yesterday, the National Organization for Women released a statement calling for NFL commissioner Roger Goodell's resignation. "The NFL has lost its way. It doesn't have a Ray Rice problem; it has a violence against women problem," the statement read.

First Take host Cari Champion read a passage from this statement on the show, and then debate was embraced. Skip Bayless said that maybe Goodell should go; Stephen A. Smith went full Facebook commenter.

"I'm sorry, I think this woman is off her rocker. I think she's lost her mind," Smith said. "That's right, I said it."

It's basically never advisable to keep saying things after saying, "I said it," but Smith didn't stop there.

"This is the most ridiculous nonsense I've ever heard in my life. Roger Goodell deserves to lose his job? Why are you acting like he's Ray Rice? Roger Goodell didn't hit Janay Palmer Rice. He hasn't hit any women. And by the way, the last time I checked, Skip, why are we talking about the NFL as if it's some cesspool for domestic violence? There's a few cases. It's being dealt with."

Champion stepped in about halfway through, saying, "Well, we gotta wrap," but Smith was working himself up.

"What the hell is this?" he asked. And then he started to yell, ranting for another minute and a half before ESPN cut to commercial.

This isn't a good look for a guy just over a month removed from a suspension he earned for talking about how women should make sure not to make men beat the shit out of them. The NFL quite obviously has a domestic violence problem, and actions like Goodell's initial bullshit two-game suspension of Rice are an obvious reason why. Goodell is, as Smith's colleague Keith Olbermann said, "an enabler of men who beat women." That Smith doesn't see this, or doesn't care, really tells us all we need to know about him.

Why is everyone acting like Goodell was the one that smacked up ole girl? If he saw the tape and is lying then hell yeah....he doesn't think much of a woman gettin' beat like she a man vs. smoking weed and if that's the case then YES he gotta go.

But from all indications....THE VICTIM was begging on behalf of Rice and Goodell decided...okay...here is the suspension, and we're moving on. Don't need to see nothing...punishment is given, lets just keep it moving, and you stay your ass outta trouble and y'all do better to each other.

Later...admitted that he went too easy, but going forward blah blah...

And NOW he should lose his job over that?

If he saw the tape and he was lying then yes...he should go....but if he genuinely just thought Ray made a mistake and his NOW wife was pleading Rays case, Ray NEVER had any priors...immo give u the benefit of the doubt, dude.

Goodell made a mistake too....but not a big enough mistake to lose his job. People acting like he the one that hit ole girl asking for dude to quit and shit.

True..."ignorance is not an excuse"...But Payton is STILL coaching the same team.

I feel SAS on THAT point.

EVERYTHING has ran smooth as all hell up to this point....I guess next up is cancel the season, huh? lol

to me...seems like there's a faction that is acting as such.

Lose his livelihood because he believed Rice and his wife's story?

He obviously was naive (if he didn't see the vid)...but now he gotta go? C'mon son.

If he were to lose his gig over THAT...then people ARE acting like he smacked up ole girl.

I know dude ain't condone it, he just went light because of the rep of the player AND the factors surrounding it.

He made a mistake in not tacking on at LEAST 2 more games, but no charges pressed, no trial, victim speaking on Rice behalf...I dunno. Other than Hernandez (or when charges are pressed), they tend to let player situation play out and then lay down punishment.

In this case there was no trial that would happen....no further investigation cause there are no charges. Boom...

"You got off light Ray...you still gonna lose, but no charges, so slap on the wrist. Dont do it again and y'all get help."

I think that's what happened, but his heavy hand in previous player situations is whats giving him a problem in this case. I get it.

Now if he saw the vid and THEN said two games....hell yeah, he should go.

BUT think about it....

He aint dumb..its 2014 and EVERYTHING leaks....you think with his track record, and that RIDICULOUSNESS of that vid, he would see it and then say 2 games? LOL

Goodell would do that?

Either he hates women.....or HELL NO!

Ray Rice was charged. He pled Not Guilty. A trial was avoided when a plea deal was agreed upon from both sides.

The problem with Goodell is that he has blatantly lied through this whole case. He has proven to be either negligent or incompetent, or both. Goodell has already come out and said he will not resign, so the only way he leaves is if there is enough pressure from advertisers, owners, players, and fans.

I would assume you would need a plantiff and a couple witnesses to make it stick, but word.

Issue to me is he gave benefit of the doubt...it's making him look negligent for sure, but not egregious enough for him to lose his job.

Life lesson...we all have 'em.

Lesson: be consistent. Drop the hammer every time.

Good luck, NFL players, Goodell or no Goodell.

He made a mistake in being too lenient and trying to cover it up to save face and keep the 'wizard of OZ' thing going instead of looking like the pushover he might actually be at heart....but again...that's not enough for him to lose his job.

He admitted he isn't infallible (prolly cause he saw it AFTER the fact)...but didn't want to admit it to save face and remain the Wizard.

Also didn't wanna deal with the bs of NFLPA in changing punishment after it has been given.

^^thats what really happened.

But that's not offensive enough to fire...AND he made a super stiff policy after the fact to show, I made a mistake...if YOU player, makes this mistake...you out. The end.

The league is more popular than ever on his watch.

*shrugs*

livelihood? This is not a privilege, its a position of power that's supposed to be above and beyond reproach.
Not some, oh well i was wrong, my bad type shit. Ill do better next time with the next wife beater, Ray McDonald.
This is not 3 strikes youre out shit.
Your the fucking commissioner of the fucking league.
You fuck up, youre out.
He failed his fans and the system.
He saw the aftermath tape and never sought out elevator footage?
He thought 2 games should cover an unconscious person on the floor without being curious as to why? Hmmm, even if he got stonewalled by the cops, he should have put it on them before, not now.
Transparency goes a long way.

>He obviously was naive (if he didn't see the vid)...but now he

Exactly someone that naive shouldn't be running the most powerful league on the planet.

Again he made a mistake. He should step down. Mistakes by CEOs get them ousted. No one thinks he beat someone. But by not punishing them appropriately then he sends a message.

if he saw the vid and said 2 games, I agree.

If he saw it after the fact, but already gave the punishment and didn't wanna deal with NFLPA and bs involved with that, it's weak on his part, but that's not fire-able, imo.

I bet money once he came with that NEW domestic abuse policy....THAT's when he actually saw it.

Anyway...CEO's fuck up all the time...but bottom line is bottom line and if you're CEO of a business at the top of the food chain within your sector, you can make mistakes, as long as it isn't *too* bad.

Losing major sponsorship(s), is when he's an issue....but talking around it until it's forgotten is probably what's going to happen....which it should.

Again...benefit of the doubt/trusting isn't fire-able unless it effects bottom line...that remains to be seen, but HE DIDN'T SMACK HER UP....and he shouldn't be treated like he did.

OG point.

Dude if he was being treated like he hit someone, people would want him to GO TO JAIL not stepping down as the head of an organization. JAIL. PRISON.

who the fuck is acting like he hit someone? People want him to answer for his incompetence/mistakes.

Fine if you dont agree with people calling for his head. But literally no one thinks he hit someone or acting like he did.

according to what you said above, if it doesnt affect bottom line, he shouldnt be fired, right?

you just wanna argue for the sake of.

lemme be clear:

IF HE SAW THE VIDEO AND THEN SAID 2 GAMES BECAUSE HE JUST DIDN'T GIVE A FUCK ABOUT A WOMAN GETTING BEAT DOWN LIKE SHE WAS A MAN...THEN FIRE HIM

If he looked at priors and said..'hey man....do better' and he had a lapse in judgement, that doesN'T mean he should be fired.

It means he's human, and going forward, I'm sure he will do his due diligence before dropping the even more massive hammers.

Calling for his job off what we know now is bitch-made (no disrespect to estrogen laden individuals)...continue to discuss if you want..(lol)...but i'm done here.

If it comes out that he saw and is lying through his teeth cause he didn't give a shit about that girl, then yes...he should be fired a thousand times over.

I doubt that's the case.

If he passed judgement on some...'aight, Ray...you are a model citizen...wtf!?, don't do it again'...'

That's not fire-able, PETA.

He showed compassion and assumed Ray learned what he needed to off of the situation. But naw....he should step down because of that, right? lol smh

You just wanna go back and forth, just cause.

I'm done here unless I hear something other than bs wrap around.

You know what I meant and thoroughly understand the stance.

Don't Goodell this, and just agree to disagree.

anything that hurts the NFL due to the commissioner's error is fireable.

this is hurting the NFL and thus is a fireable offense. whether or not he will is debatable, but the idea he's safe from firing because there's no grounds for that is, honestly, fucking dumb.

1. All 32 owners have to agree to remove him as commish.
From what I read, Kraft (NE) and Mara (NYG) are behind him.
In fact, Mara and Rooney (PIT) are part of the team investigating the situation
with the ex-FBI agent. I don't expect them to find anything. So there's that.

2. None of those owners will be motivated to remove RG unless this situation
effects the billions of dollars the NFL is making. Unless people stop attending
games or boycott the products that sponsor the league, it'll be business as usual.

I fully expect Goodell to hand over the trophy to the Super Bowl winner come February.

the NFL has plently of law enforcement and security connections.

Christian Fauria was on the radio and said when he was still playing his computer got 'hacked.' The NFL had the FBI contact him directly and investigated the situation and found the 'hacker.'

But apparently Roger can't find a DVD from the police.

^^^ That's the point. In this case Goodell has been most likely both negligent and incompetent. He has many resources at his disposal, but did not fully utilize them to the proper extent that would have allowed him to make the best judgement on this case.

It's being overseen by owners John Mara of the New York Giants and Art Rooney of the Pittsburgh Steelers. So it's not really an "independent" investigation.

I just don't get the owners' (so far) stance on him keeping his job. If Roger Goodell isn't the commissioner, the NFL isn't going to suddenly plunge into financial ruin and criminal-player chaos. Why are they standing by this guy so staunchly in the face of such an obvious fuck-up that kept fucking up over and over again.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

Goodell should be treated like Marshawn Lynch during SB and be forced to talk to everyone who requests his time whether he wants to or not.

The 49ers have suspended radio broadcaster Ted Robinson two games for comments he made regarding domestic violence on KNBR on Monday afternoon.

In discussing the controversy regarding former Ravens running back Ray Rice, Robinson said the victim, Rice’s wife, Janay, bore some of the responsibility for not speaking up after she was knocked unconscious by her then-fiancee.

“That, to me, is the saddest part of it,” Robinson said.

Robinson also said her decision to marry Rice after she was assaulted was “pathetic.”

On Monday, Rice was released by the Ravens and suspended indefinitely by the NFL after a new video emerged that showed him knocking out Janay Rice in a casino elevator in February.

Robinson has also been suspended for two games by the Pac-12 Network, for which he calls college games. The Pac-12 Network said Robinson will undergo sensitivity training.

He's appealing his case. Why is he not suspended with pay until his appeal is resolved?

The NFL really doesn't care about domestic violence. Or rather it has not cared up until this uproar about Rice's case.

once outside the elevator, right as she walks up. you can see her head go back in response before she lightly hits him. then when he gets in her face in the elevator he spits on her again before she goes at him. apparently security witnessed both of these, and their video quality is much better than what we saw. not that any of his actions were condoneable before, just pointing that out for the "she slapped him first" crowd. even her slaps were in response to something he did.

How independent will Robert Mueller be?

Posted by Mike Florio on September 11, 2014, 10:14 AM EDT

When the NFL announced that an independent investigator had been hired to explore the league office’s poor-at-best handling of the Ray Rice case, I thought the league had taken a clear step in the right direction.

When I saw that two old-guard owners would oversee what would otherwise be an independent investigation, I became a little concerned that the investigation wouldn’t truly be independent.

When I realized that the man hired to do the investigation works for WilmerHale, the law firm that helped the NFL recently negotiate a multi-billion-dollar contract with DirecTV, any hope of true and genuine independence evaporated. As explained by ESPN.com, the firm previously has represented Washington owner Daniel Snyder, and several members of the firm have taken jobs with NFL teams.

One such former WilmerHale employee is, coincidentally, Ravens president Dick Cass, who joined the club after thirty-plus years at the firm.

While the tentacles aren’t as numerous as those connecting the league office to a law firm like Covington & Burling, the NFL-WilmerHale linkage suggests that Robert Mueller isn’t and won’t be truly independent. At some level, Mueller possibly will be influenced by his firm’s separate relationship with the NFL. Even if he isn’t, the appearance of a potential influence makes it impossible to fully trust the independence of the investigation.

That’s why the best choice would have been (and still could be) to give former Commissioner Paul Tagliabue a significant role in this process. Who knows the inner workings of the league office better than the man who presided over it for twice as long as Goodell has? Two years ago, Tagliabue displayed his ability to be independent and objective when scuttling Goodell’s suspensions of various players for the bounty case.

If the goal is to not only get to the truth but to create the impression that a truly independent effort has been undertaken to find the truth, Mueller is the wrong choice. Tagliabue ultimately could be the right one.
