That's the reason Pac/Bradley 2 did less numbers than Pac/Bradley 1. At the time of the first fight Pac was the #1 or 2 fighter in the world, while by the time the rematch happen he had fallen from the top after that Marquez KO.

Floyd/Maidana probably didn't do as many numbers as normal because most people didn't give Maidana any type of chance. Floyd gets a big chunk of his buys from people that don't like him and want to see him lose - those types of PPV buyers may have sat out the first fight, but after seeing that it was a closer match than expected (and I'm sure there's plenty of Floyd haters that are saying he should have lost) they'll definitely pay to see a rematch.

That is, unless Floyd fights someone else first and gets knocked out, like Pac did.

And the fight that made money.....Mayweather got most of it
Not sure what the long game is for showtime here.the Subscriber base is still dwarfed by HBO.

just by having a Showtime subscription nor are you unable to buy the fight if you don't subscribe.

or Floyd replays a week after the fight.

CBS is pouring some money into the brand but much like with their series, they've got a long way to go before anyone breaks a sweat over at HBO.

And I say that as a subscriber for the past ten years.

for a stretch here before they begin to make real in-roads.

They overpaid for Jim Rome even though he's really only good at doing radio.

CBS knows they're lagging far behind ABC/ESPN & NBC/Universal right now in terms of its cable channel branches, online revenue streams, let alone its premium channel or sports (which might be the last two things that people will still actually pay cable bills for in the coming years as the demo watching their broad sitcoms or formulaic dramas dies off).

They gotta spend now to be in the game later.

Nobody (casual sports/boxing fan) knew anything about Maidana besides maybe he beat broner. And that aint saying much.

so a lot of people protested by not buying
the product - but 850k is still a good number,
just not up to Floyd's usual standards.

As for Showtime, my guess is that they are banking
on getting the elite fighters because of their
Mayweather contract - which has already happened
to an extent. Will be interesting to see how this
works out for them after Floyd retires.

plus i guess a cut of the gross ticket sales

still leaves...what...29M for everyone else?

& if the co headliner made 1.5 guaranteed something tells me those other cats on the card making 1M per or less...so lets say Showtime minus its production costs...i still cant see em making any less than 10M off the fight

by any stretch thats still a good night for a business

does it really matter?

which would mean showtime is in the red off floyds guarantee alone
when the contract was first presented the shobox CEO said they need 1 mil buys to break even
and khan and broner both got paid over $1.5mil a piece fwtw

it's probably not a pay per view worthy fight looking at it going in.

the idea that any Floyd fight is worthy of pay per view is honestly riddiculous...

fighting Madaina was a more competative match up than fighting Khan..but still as Floyd nears the end of his career..he's only going to get the larger pay per view fights if he fights the opponents that are out there who present more of a challenge....fighting Canelo was a step in that direction....Fighting Madaina wasn't necessarily a step away from that..but it wasn't a strong step in the right direction either..

he needs to fight Manny....then fight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. for a middle weight belt if he has one...people are going to pay for challenges....
