I just hate how history can be framed by replaying / repeating
only *one part* of a narrative time and time again

sh*t. even this film is ending with that situation. smh

Damn all those would be flagrant 2's, ejections and suspensions.

And the retaliations (Bird, Dominique), multi game suspensions for landed punches.

Yet every time we bring up, hand checking and hard fouls and how that era was tough as hell because those things were legal, these mofo's whine about the comparison.

Niggas was REAL goonin' fam.

couldn't respect them after walking off the court like bitches.

love em or hate em, you could have maybe found respect for them until they did that...and that was all Isaiah. that was his team and that's why Isaiah isn't mentioned in the pantheon with Mike, Magic, Bird. I mean shit, I think Isaiah obviously had a better career than Dominique & Barkley but I still think people mention Chuck & 'Nique before Isaiah.

all that said, another good 30 For 30 as I'd expect.

A defining piece of a champion just plucked for nothing? Crazy. And to do it how they did it? I'm amazed the Pistons didn't react more negatively against management for how they handled that.

And I noticed they skipped saying who the 8 saved were, damn that was cold....

Isiah took a swing at Mahorn at one point in that game. And then Mahorn was right in the middle of that brawl kicking off where Barkley punched Laimbeer.

Tough seeing Bird's steal and the phantom foul in the same sitting though. Amazing team, some of my earliest clear memories as a sports fan.

Pretty good trip down memory lane though. I'd forgotten the Mahorn situation and to see him choked up about it still...

I hated that team, but I appreciate them now like I appreciate Ric Flair.

no mention of Byron Scott being injured....

then after somewhat in passing mentioning that Magic hurt his hammie and was done after game 2... they act like it was some grand strategy against Worthy that ended up sealing their first title...

They swept a team that hadn't lost any playoff games up to the finals that year because that team lost it's starting backcourt ..

when the teams were at full strength the year before...the Lakers won......

asterisk...

lol

but naw..great 30 for 30....

Byron was 20 ppg back then, and he didn't play one second in the finals. Definitely should've been mentioned. They made a big thing about how they caught some bad breaks on their rise.....they caught a couple good ones that helped them out in the '89 finals.

In response to Reply # 56

nope...

just wasn't going to happen.....

Isaiah getting hurt in that series actually became insignificant because the guy set a finals record...AFTER...I repeat...AFTER he got hurt...

and the Pistons came very close in Game 6 because of Isaiah who again had a record performance AFTER he got hurt..

and again..they weren't going to win a Game 7 at the Forum...

nope.

The next season... The Lakers were undefeated in the playoffs leading into the finals..hadn't lost not 1 game and was playing at close to as high a level as they ever played in that era...the Pistons still might have won...but again there's a pretty strong argument that a team going for a 3-peat and having not lost a game in the playoffs...and sending off basketball royalty in his final season would have at a minimum not gotten swept..and would have had a good shot of winning the series if not for losing their backcourt... you know Tony Campbell was only going to do so much...lolol..

Umm..how do you figure? The Pistons were up 1 when that phantom foul was called. You don't think they could have, I don't know, been up 15 if Zeke was actually healthy? A gimpy Zeke in Game 6 almost won that game. You're just being intellectually dishonest now.

so are you trying to say he would have scored 50 points or something if his ankle wasn't hurt...

You'd have an argument if the Pistons were down by 1 and Zeke had to leave the game or only scored like 10 points after getting hurt..

the 25 points in a 3rd quarter makes the injury a moot point in terms of who won or loss...it's only relevant in putting into context honestly one of the most incredible performances in NBA history by Isaiah..

I would say the same thing. I like when all the important things are mentioned.

Pistons may have very well won in 89 anyway. They had a great team and were very worthy champions. But you can't just point out the bad breaks in other years and ignore the good ones when they got over the hump. Both are part of sports.

They caught two good ones in those '89 finals, and it should always be part of the narrative. I believe I've read that Riley was putting the Lakers through grueling practices before the finals and Byron got hurt in practice.....maybe just credit Daly's approach or something, if it's gotta be spun pro-Detroit.

In response to Reply # 0

if Isaiah's co-signing Rodman's words about Bird....after Bird had just busted they ass in the playoffs...ie. being a sore loser....was the unifying event that kind of formed the birth of the Bad Boys...

then they ended with walking off the court...again sore losers...

in-between that sore loser bread was a great team ...who made a great run...led by a great Coach and GM...

but the bread on that sandwich is stale and looks bad..

Isaiah giving the joint press conference with Bird while Bird is at the Finals PLAYING...and Zeke is rocking the Jermaine Jackson shirt and slack combo......that was not a good look.... G's is playin in the finals and you giving press conferences in street clothes.......

then ducking his head as he walked off the court to end their era..

like I said...they run is sandwiched in between some stale ass bread.... No other Champions ...Dynasty type of champs I mean...no other great teams have that taint to them like that..

The physical play they went to so they could get past the Celtics...they were only doing what they saw the Celtics do in getting over on the Lakers the 1 time the Celts beat the Lakes in the finals during that era.... And they continued to utilize that style...benefiting from the fact that the flagrant foul rules weren't what they are now.... the style the Celtics used to beat the Lakers stopped working once the Lakers matured because a team with the explosive weapons and great seasoned players like the Lakers had will eventually defeat that style of play.....fortunately for the Pistons...they really didn't run into that type of team until those Bulls matured and were seasoned....

I have to say though...some people think the NBA is soft now...but the flagrant foul rules and the rules against fighting have made Goon Ball less likely to an effective route to a championship...and honestly that has been a good thing

leave that to backwards ass hockey.

And of course there's the undercurrent of basketball being a sport played by black guys, watched by white guys, which goes with the discussion, but there's just no reason -- as a neutral fan -- to want guys like Jordan to get chopped every time they try a move. Bron is an amazing player, fun to watch, and I'm glad we don't have to watch him get into a few fights a year just to maintain his right to drive the line and make his highlight plays.

This documentary was inspiring and emotional... very well done

I love the NBA today but the 1 thing that sticks out from then vs now isn't the physical play to me... I understand why they toned that down (tho they have went too far)

What sucks is you don't see teams develop like they did back then... maybe we will get it with portland, okc kind of is, and then you have the exception to all rules, the spurs...

the idea of knocking on the door annually until you bust through was great through, and that was the main theme of the movie to me

In response to Reply # 0

like each of them are still holding on to their view of why the trade happened..

obviously AD wore out his welcome and had become a distraction.... Chuck was right to give Rodman more minutes because his energy and defense was needed in crunch time....and AD was understandably salty bout that and became a detriment to the locker room...

but...

Aguirre is wishful thinking that he was a better player than AD...

he wasn't...

Mark was a better college player for sure...but AD should have the edge in the Pros...

Dantley was a very undersized power forward when he initially came into the league and turned himself into a scoring champion at the small forward and a great scorer in the post..again at 6'5 and 210lbs....

AD averaged more points...rebounds...and had a much much better field goal percentage

and I give him credit for adjusting his game when he came to the Pistons..

but the adjustments AD made to his game over the course of his career is something that too often gets overlooked..

The year before the Lakers drafted Magic Johnson, Adrian Dantley was the Lakers starting power forward alongside Jamaal Wilkes in the front court.... then to evolve into one of the prolific scoring small forwards in the NBA later on...

I like Aguirre but got to give the edge to AD as a player.

But seeing it in context with all the physical play that resulted in non call after non call in that era makes it so much more bewildering.

In response to Reply # 63

Laimbeer did that often...and like a lot of other stuff he did it wasn't called.... If he had just gone straight up and kept his body off Cap while doing so....it's a no call...

people can argue that it was a foul that shouldn't have been called at that time in the game...which is pretty riddiculous, but still...one could argue that..

but it was foul...

66. "if anything was questionable it was the timing..not whether or not"
In response to Reply # 65

he fouled him because he obviously did...

if he was going to body Cap on that play..which would have been a great strategy at that time....you do it before he gets set to shoot... you root him towards the baseline before he gets the ball..

jumping towards Cap as he's shooting and pressing his torso up against Cap to move him off the center of his hook shot form was just a foul...

timing of calling that may have been questionable but considering who the players were ...Laimbeer wasn't going to get a no call in that spot...

and the refs made it up for Laimbeer in the finals 2 years later because the level of flopping he did when that series returned to Portland was actually pretty historic....

beyond having to read or see something on tv after the fact being that I was around and of age when all of this happen..

and if I do say so myself...regardless of what many may say..Warren Coolidge is a sports fan who has very very rooted favorites, yet gives brutally honest analysis of other teams and players...

I could go on and on about the positive attributes of every Laker rivaly team or player ... including this Piston team AND Isaiah Thomas, whose greatness as a player I have defended on this board for years

probably watch it again tonight with the wifey....

I have a great deal of respect for that Pistons team...the players...the coaches...the GM...

absolutely..

just like I have a great deal of respect for those Celtics teams...the Bulls...the Sixers... of that era...

whomever..

but let's be clear...I didn't need this 30 for 30 to inform me about something I was old enough to vividly remember happening when it was actually happening...

I remember the Pistons BEFORE Isaiah and them.... When John Long ... Bob Lanier and ML Carr were holding it down in front of a half empty arena...

obviously I'm a Laker fan.. but I'm as much an off the top of the head NBA historian as anyone could be from my generation

so...

>You cant now claim to give brutally honest analysis

yeah..I can...

In response to Reply # 75

He may have been very good at getting away with stuff like that, and it wasn't one of his obvious hammerings(not the time for that), but he made contact with the shooter and got called for it. Too bad!

There were still 14 seconds left after Kareem did his job and made 2 clutch FT's.
