Flyers/Rangers - I hope both teams lose
Blackhawks/Blues - I like the Blues but their possession numbers have been bad this year, I think the Hawks make relatively quick work.
Kings/Sharks - should be good.
Wild/Avalanche - I like the 'lanche, except for their douchebag coach and their potentially Vezina-winning goalie who beats his girlfriend and should be in jail.

Penguins held on last night, Flower was great in the 3rd period (as was the post).
Ducks held on last night, in a shocking turn of events, a Bruce Boudreau team got out to a big lead and then tried desperately to hold on.
Habs/'Ning: uh....

But what's the point of keeping the best goal scorer of his generation, and one of the best of all time?

Scoring goals.

What would I do if this was my team?

Fire Oates and kick him in the balls on the way out.
Fire GMGM and thank him for his service.
Hire a new GM.
Hire a good veteran coach like Laviolette.
Resign Grabovski.
Try to trade Mike Green's $6M salary.
Get a decent defensive 4D to pair with Orlov or Green if 52 is still around.

I mean, this is a good team:

Penner/Erat/whoever-Backstrom-Ovie
Kuz-Grabo-MarJo
Chimera-Fehr-Ward <- best line ever
4thline-Beagle-whoeverthefuckwecanget

(Also, Tom Wilson has to fit somewhere in there. He showed great flashes and without a terrible coach, he'd grow. Maybe on the 2nd line? But that line is crowded. Maybe bump MarJo to third line center?)

Carlson-Alzner
Orlov/Green-defensive 4D
whoever/whoever

Holtby
Whoever.

Laich/Brouwer: see ya.

But if someone wants to talk about Ovie's plus/minus without save% and teammate shooting%, and nebulous things like leadership, I don't have much to add. That's not my thing.

Edited to include Grabo, Wilson, Beagle.

In response to Reply # 3

Gabby has added offense to our team the same way Carter did in 2012. First line is unbelievable. Our 2nd line is starting to play better. Our bottom. 6 have picked it up since the break ended. Our defense is tops in the league. We have a team that can bring us a second cup. I won't even talk about Quick. Playoff Quick is almost inbeatable.

i wasnt around the ducks much this year but i have been lately, in fact i got there right when this transition started and my only question was why it didnt happen sooner.

boudreau took a big risk doing this now with points on the line and a big risk extending it into the playoffs. but i think it's worked.

first of all, hiller is a proven mediocre goalie. let's just get that out there right away. they probably should have replaced him when they replaced carlyle. he is capable of winning games and putting up decent numbers with a stacked team, and so is the multitude of backups they have had behind him.

andersen is bigger, moves better laterally, is a considerably better puck handler and his mental makeup is strong. in that first game, yes, two of the three goals were a little suspect but let's face it they also got two of the three off an extended five on three. in game 2 he was sharp and he made some VERY timely saves, mainly that one on daley.

hiller was middling through the last stretch where he was the starter. then he got two games to prove himself and played poorly in both, getting pulled against a non playoff team once, losing to a last-place club in the other. you could say that niemi was having a similar stretch but not really, only by record. he also didn't have a really good backup pushing him.

at this point i am not entirely sure hiller would play if andersen were to be injured. we just saw that and the message seemed to be "anyone but hiller." no disrespect to gibson, who is very talented, but you're playing an absolutely green 20 year old rookie in games for the division? that shows exactly where hiller's game is at.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Fuck this in-bred outmoded franchise until Snider dies, altho who knows his sons could be worse.

And fuck Riley Cooper in his Flyer jersey tweeting about town like he or they won something.

Flyer Fans are easily the most deluded, clueless & often douchey and/or flat-out racist subset of fans.

I'm just gonna troll the shit out of them until further notice.

i think the flyers have a pretty nice mix of skaters right now. it will be a challenge replacing timonen if he leaves and even as it is they don't have a true no. 1 dman. but that's about all i could point to. mason has been excellent and if he is close to 100% he will breathe life back into this team. emery battled hard and did his job but he was shaky at times, too. if they rode him, i'd agree with you, but i think mason will be back in game 3. i would have taken philly against almost any eastern team in the first round, but i think the rangers and bruins are two very tough matchups for them

And I'm not buying him as the elite playoff-money goaltender that we haven't had since '87.

Speaking of '87, the future-GM-former-goaltender upstairs has gotta be punching walls at how mad he is about Mason.

Tocchet sounded like he was all but holding off calling him a bitch today with Mikey Miss.

whatever mason said to the press means nothing, these kinds of things are lied about and euphemized all the time.

what strikes me as odd is that they went with emery in sort of a toss-up situation. now he gets pulled and mason mops up. why? if he still has symptoms, let the backup stew in this mess. if he was symptom free, why the fuck didnt he start?

anyway, i am not calling them cooked yet, but they look to be in a tough spot. i do think mason is the closest thing to a legit goalie we have had in the 2000s.

i havent seen hexy this year, hopefully i can get out to the draft and shoot the shit with him. he is still a beast.

now Giroux's just adding to their internal pressure by guaranteeing a win in Game 4, which is just a silly time in a series and a season to call a shot. Shows how desperate they already are.

Rangers are just better and it won't matter much who plays goal.

Well I wasn't around to make my predictions but so far they have gone OK. They were:

Bruins in six, no Zetterberg for Detroit buries them.
Penguins in six, Columbus won't beat itself but to win their goalie has to steal the series. Tough to do.
Habs in seven, TB missing Bishop, Palat, never really quite replaced MSL scoring wise. At 100%, it's probably them in 7. Teams are close.
Rangers in seven, toss up series talent wise but the Flyers always find a way to disappoint. I predict they go up 3-2 and then lose Games 6 and 7.

Ducks in five, Dallas is way too short on players. They have like one of everything and that's it. Not much depth.
Avs in six, Minnesota with too many inexperienced guys in key positions plus Roy is some sort of warlock.
Kings in seven, though I'm iffy here because I feel like this could be the Sharks' year. They are being overlooked and that usually bodes well for a good team.
Blues in seven, for all the BS about them being banged up, so was Chicago, and now just about everyone is playing. Hitchcock is due for a big run.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

you look at the guys who were doing the job for them two years ago, a lot of them are mediocre to heavy ass suck now.

mitchell and greene were huge parts of that run, HUGE. mitchell has really been worn down by injuries in recent years, greene, too. i guess that's it, either way they are shells of the players they were two years ago.

brown can't seem to get much going this year. he is putting in the effort and he battled some nagging stuff, but he just can't get it going consistently. mike richards is in that boat, too, except he seems kinda withdrawn and sluggish.

that's not even to mention the guys that they had playing above their heads that year who aren't coming through, obviously.

a lot is being made of quick's play. eh, i think he has been a small part of the problem, nothing more.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

criticized teams for employing worthless thugs while he continued to cut a check to Matt Cooke ever year.

The thing about Cooke is that he actually has some hockey talent. But like Brad Marchand (to a much stronger degree), he insists on mixing it with being dirty and taking cheap shots.

with barrie already having been diagnosed at 4-6 weeks, i figured he might get the gate for the whole playoff. short of that, seven games seems as good of a number as any. you also have to figure the league wasn't counting on minnesota going to the finals or anything

i also feel like two of those games could have gone either way, particularly game 1.

tampa's hand was forced with that st louis trade and i think it hurt their team. big adjustment late in the year. missing palat for two games hurt. goaltender being injured. etc.

pittsburgh has enough skill that their main players have scored jack shit for goals and they are still winning the series. sid, geno, zero goals, letang got an empty netter (and played very well) for his first one today.

columbus is definitely developing an identity and a pretty good bunch of players.

this will be the game I think about all summer. To crawl back into it and actually take control...to the point where we could have honestly blown it open...only to end up losing in OT. This one REALLY hurt. Miller gives up a soft goal for the game winner. I know dude is real nice, but that should have been stopped. The goal to tie it was understandable. That winning goal should have been stopped. Tarasenko continues to be so dynamic and creative. Jesus, we need Backes. I dunno man.

After the first Zetterberg is already at half of what they said he would play for the whole game, and its easy to see why.

That line is dominating. Will be interesting to see how Julien counters it back in Boston.

I'm conflicted on Darcy Kuemper. He's only given up one goal in two starts, but WOW does he make some questionable decisions. Dude easily could have given up 3 or 4 last night.

Still, this series is definitely going 7, and it's officially winnable. McKinnon was a complete non-factor last night.

And Mikael Granlund is a goddamn MAN.

I foresee goaltending problems if they get out of this round for sure.

The last two games I feel like the had the puck the entire game. Total 180. If MacKinnon is slowed then that works in their favor. I thought going in that it could be an upset special, but I thought nah because there are too many young guys and unknowns in key spots for Minnesota. Colorado losing Barrie didn't help their cause either, he had an incredible second half.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

I didn't think Trotz was the problem and if they also fail to bring back Mitch Korn then I think the Preds made a mistake. Their problem is not that they play a conservative style, but that they collect every 30-point forward they can find. When they had skill players like Kariya and Sullivan and even Arnott, they weren't duding out like this offensively.

Rutherford is going to step down in Carolina. I don't know if he will stay on as team president, but he won't be the GM anymore. This makes more sense to me because despite that Stanley Cup not being *too* far in his rearview mirror, the Canes have had a lot of trouble getting it going. It's a bummer though, he was there since the Whalers days. Between that and Giggy's likely retirement, their footprint is fading fast.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Are Richards and Carter going to shock the world again?

the last game i thought the sharks played pretty well and it was just a matter of the kings playing focused late and getting some of the bounces they couldnt seem to buy in the first two games.

but tonight the kings are cruising on them. nice pressure and san jose had been careless with the puck. i think their forward group has really turned it on defensively, gotten better in each of the last three games.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

I watched the whole game and I was thinking wow Anaheim looks like shit and Dallas is playing well. Then the 3rd period Anaheim was taking penalty after penalty. Im thinking this is over and the series isnt looking good for the Ducks. Then Dallas implodes. Blowing that lead with 2 minutes left there was no way they were winning in OT.

In response to Reply # 100

they were well coached and got the max out of many of their guys but they didn't have enough players and they didn't bury any at key points. in the first two games they had good opportunities to get the game tied late, weak push in the first game, no finish in the second. a lot of people are roasting seguin, i actually think he played a very good series overall but again he was more generating offense than actually putting the puck in the net.

anaheim didn't play their best but you think about the way they meandered in the middle of the series, it's pretty similar to how some favorites (think pitt-philly a couple years ago) have lost a series quickly. they regrouped OK and the big thing was that they just had more contributors than the stars did. guys like bonino and devo came through for them. they got big efforts from role guys in their defense, like i thought bryan allen had a helluva series. dallas didn't have that, they were trying to spread the minutes to their top guys and just use the back end of their lineup where they had to.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

the shifts in momentum for and against were insane. They would play great for a whole period then come out looking like a completely different team and play like shit. That was some amazingly inconsistent play by them. There was no middle ground. Either great or complete horse shit. The Ducks capitalized on those horse shit moments.

that second line pretty much made or broke their fortunes. when they were scoring and/or agitating, they were winning. if they were taking cheesy penalties and not getting any zone time, they were in trouble.

dallas has money, too bad the FA market is borderline trash. they just need some secondary guys though, maybe they can come up with them.

the russian kid is going to be a fucking machine, he will be the best russian player in the NHL within four seasons IMO. right now he is kind of spacey. he's only going to get more with the program and, scarier still, bigger.

Involved in all three goals...finishing two and setting up the other. Should be a very interesting game 7, especially if we score first. Sharks had their chance to bury em but when you give a team some confidence and that team has a keeper like J Quick who can get scorching hot...recipe for disaster.

let's face it, last night's game could have gone either way. i would argue game 4 could have gone either way. certainly that was true of game 3, which the sharks won.

the bottom line is that this is the result that the series was supposed to produce, it just produced it in an unconventional way.

kings have so many money guys in game 7s though. williams, first and foremost, but also doughty, richards and mitchell, obviously kopitar has it cranking right now also. sharks need someone to fire up from their big guns, i am betting it will be that marleau-couture-nieto line that does some damage for them

That's wack... Coach Mac saying that is him showing his frustration now... I don't give a shit if the whistle should've blown or Williams pushed Stalock into the net... To be honest, Kopitar should've never got that puck in the zone if Boyle stood him up at the line when he had the chance to... Or the Sharks score on a 5 on 3... Or 5 on 4... Talk about some real shit... Not "We got cheated..."

Well, it's game 7... Sharks gotta stand up at home... They gotta be ready... Hopefully Vlasic will be back... I talked to DW yesterday and he said he needed a couple days off... Hopefully that meant yesterday, today and tomorrow... Sharks gotta score first... Really wondering if the go with Nemo or stay with Stalock... I think you go back to Nemo... Also, gotta move Torres up to either line 2 or 3...

Game 7 should be exciting...

he knows that but at the same time i think in his mind he has to bring the room's frustration and get it out there, even if that means a fine.

that seems to be a common way to go about that sort of thing. there was a lot of time between the game and his presser. he had time to cool it. obviously he was still a little peeved, but his saying that was calculated.

sutter certainly looked a lot more confident up there, and with good reason.

the first 2 games were awful. I couldnt believe we saved our worst two performances of the season for the playoffs. It was embarrassing. Game 3 was a bit better but we still played sloppy D. A lot of odd man rushes. After our win in game 4 I believed. That is the Kings hockey that I have been watching all year long. Well all year minus December. I thought it was possible after game 4. But I didnt want to jinx it by posting. Because of course my posting is the reason we win or lose. Game 5 was an even bigger confidence boost. The Sharks are a mentally weak team. They were DONE after game 5. They looked broken. They played broken. They had no confidence in their goalies. Even though neither loss was on the goalies. Losing Vlasic didnt help. But even if they had him. He doesnt score many goals. There was no offense at all. Their big boys did nothing. Sure they were scoring when our team was playing its worst hockey of the season. But when we actually played our game NOBODY could score. Couture, Thornton, Pavelski, and Marleau all disappeared. Our stars showed up, theirs didnt. Anaheim has got to be shaking in their skates right now. This team is scary.

Unfortunately, you have the better coach... But more importantly, your big players showed up... Congrats...

I will never understand McLellan's decision on line combos in this series (EDIT: but they did work in game 1)... I'm just going to assume that Torres was still too injured to play 3rd or 2nd line minutes... But not playing Havlat or Kennedy over Brown after game 3... Shit, just tonight... I was in shock seeing Brown getting minutes in the 3rd... Your team is having trouble scoring and there are 2 guys that you picked up because of their past playoff performances... Nah, let's go with the guy that we picked up because Torres was injured and we needed a physical presence...

Yup, this is a low point as a Sharks fan for 20+years...

Well....

The Bruins did this and then won the cup the following year... So I'll stay optimistic... haha...

I hope either Chicago or Minnesota can win the West... and then the cup...

He is going to take the fall because Thornton and Marleau being traded is basically a nonstarter. They both have NMCs and took discounts to stay.

That isn't to say that their young guys did much as the series went on, but I can't see them moving Couture or Pavelski given their age, salary, skill, etc.

So if there is no big trade to be made then the coach has to go for sure. But I think he did a decent job game planning, his team just didn't respond.

I talked to some people in other FOs who seemed to think an upgrade in goal should be their first priority. That seems difficult, I still think Niemi is above average and getting an elite goalie is not an easy thing to do. Especially as "I NEED IT NOW" type of deal. Look at the Flyers, Blues and other teams that have tried that recently.

I think in the series they got a little too hype off their early success and when they got hit in the mouth they didn't know how to respond. The microcosm of that was the 2-1 goal in Game 6, that was pretty much how the whole series went. Pretty surprising for guys that have gone deep before, really.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

unfortunately, He's had the best Shark teams and hasn't found a way to get them over... Yes, I believe that most of that responsibility is on the players, but I also believe that the coach is responsible as well... Sutter saw problems, switched up his lines, spread out his talent through 4 lines and obviously got his team back to where they needed to be....really by game 3...

McLellan showed some stubbornness... or maybe too much faith in his players... Not sure what it was, but he didn't fix what was no longer working... In game 2, he made adjustments and the Sharks score 7... In game 3, he reverted back to his original lines... But if you look back, Marleau's OT goal (as fluky as it was) was scored on a line that was changed in OT...

McLellan is a great coach, he's come into my job a few times and seems like a great guy... But he might not be the right guy for the Sharks... I would really like to see what Trotz could do with this team...

they had one disappointing loss before this (anaheim) and were a coin flip from another conf finals last year. i dont see where he fucked up apart from this series.

meanwhile they have a captain who finds innovative ways to vanish every year and now he's got some of their younger guys following his lead.

i think he knew what he was doing as far as personnel. people are hammering his use of pavelski/hertl but they moved around and hertl playing huge minutes was probably not an option. yes, they moved pavelski onto that line in OT but he had played 4-5 shifts on it earlier. they were mostly if not all faceoff situations, definitely that scoring play he was out there to take the draw. i didnt see him mis-using anyone, to be honest, i just saw a lot of guys leaving their nuts on the team bus.

some guys had it going early but overall i thought pavelski, couture and thornton were all woefully ineffective as the series wore on.

one thing we definitely agree on is that it would be verrrrry interesting to see trotz come to san jose. the main thing i want to see is how trotz fares when his team has this kind of luxurious forward depth. nashville hasn't *always* been a vast collection of 30-point scorers, but they haven't had more than 2-3 offensive weapons. so now with this group, whoa. if he brings mitch korn with him, they won't have to worry about goaltending. IMO korn is hands down the best goalie coach in the business.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

I hear criticism all the time. But I only see him play against us and when he plays us he is usually on. I mean last years series is proof enough. I dont think he is a goalie that is going to steal a series like Quick. But he is well above average.

Now in this series I dont see where he played bad. Just like Quick getting scored on 16 or whatever it was times in the first 3 games. If the team in front of you is playing like shit you are fucked. Sharks D among other things were non existent. Cant put that on him.

>Sharks D among other things were non
>existent. Cant put that on him.

Little easier to say when you knock out one of the top D-men in the league... (yes, I'm salty... I feel Stoll played pretty reckless games 3-6)

As for the Niemi thing, he didn't have his best year... combined with Kevin Kurz being very critical of him (some deserved, some not, but it's his job)... Also, Stalock looked really good in net this season... I've been saying for years he is the future and I think he might possibly challenge Nemo for the starting position next season... I thought last night that Niemi played great... The Kings 3 (legit) goals last night all could've been prevented by better defense... Even Doughty's goal could've been stopped by Wingels if he doesn't glide back into the defensive zone... The Sharks are lucky it didn't get ugly early last night and Niemi is the reason...

I'm assuming you're referring to fans on twitter blaming Nemo... I've read crazy stuff like it's all his fault, trade Joe Pavelski for Shattenkirk and Berglund, and of course everything is Marleau's fault again because he doesn't perform in the playoffs... Personally, I thought Thornton had his worse playoffs in years... But I don't think it all falls on him... PP doomed them (to quote nhl.com) and not spreading out/utilizing their full talented roster is why they lost... And of course the Kings defense turning into Team Canada status was part of the reason, too...

unless Vlasic was going to start playing on every pairing he wouldnt have mattered. Also Last year Torres knocked Stoll out for a couple of games. We found a way not to implode and keep it together. Has Vlasic's official injury come out yet? The elbow didnt look like it hit him hard. It looked to be more of Stoll's forearm. But to me it looked like it twisted him awkwardly more so than concussion issues. As far as elbows go that one was pretty tame (still dirty) but I would rather take that one than one of where a guy has 10 feet of momentum behind it.

But lots of Sharks fans on twitter and reddit. Always dogging on Nemo. Stalock really scared me though. The way he looked to pass the puck down the ice every time he touched it. I was really waiting for him to hit someone cheating in the neutral zone for a break away.

i think their D is decent, vlasic, stuart, boyle are all above average to strong and no one they have is all that weak. they have good organizational depth on d also, they face a decision on boyle obviously.

i don't know nemo to me was pretty average down the stretch. i was underwhelmed by his play against the ducks and then again in this series. didn't seem to have great control of his pads. clearly got outplayed at the other end and that was even with quick and his D having some real wobbly moments.

personally i don't see an upgrade available though. i really think the sharks are committed to this group, if they can get a veteran or two to put them over the top (maybe a checking center and a decent defenseman) that should be good.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

he was quite average, in fact i think if you switched him with hiller, he would have gone through the same turmoil hiller did. he wasn't quite as weak but his results were similar. he has also not been great in big games since coming to SJ.

he can look like a world-beater sometimes but i think he is an above average goalie. it's hard to get an elite one though. if i were them i think i would bring in trotz and his staff, because it's not going to be remotely easy to upgrade in goal or get good value for veterans with big salaries and no-movement clauses. they have some decent prospects on defense, i don't see a need for any more forwards.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

STILL PUMPED FROM LAST NIGHT AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Now we just have to get past Chicago with (maybe) Bryzgalov in goal, or maybe a banged up Kumper. Neither thing sounds possible, but who cares about that right now?

Rangers in 7, Habs in 6, Blackhawks in 7 and Ducks in 6.

Rangers I think have a more reliable formula than Pittsburgh and I also think their skill guys are starting to get going. They won't get five goals from Carcillo again, but they will get them from either Nash or St Louis. Power play has to improve but I think it will happen.

Habs I really like to clock the darling Boston. I am looking for big series from Price and Subban. I like Montreal's ability to match the depth if not the quality of Boston's forwards. I just feel like Montreal is going to upend these guys and no one seems to be taking them.

Kings are the sexy upset pick but in my opinion their defense is too thin. Anaheim has potential problems with what they have, but they have it all. Conversely I think Doughty may get worn down, Mitchell either won't play or won't play effectively and so the harder they lean on the rest of their D corps, the shakier it will get. They look like they are coming hard but I think the Ducks will handle it well. That Dallas series was excellent prep, I think.

I think the Hawks could potential finish Minnesota quickly but I don't think they will. I think they will let them linger and then experience will take over in Game 7.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

they left that game 2 on the fucking table, or this thing would be over already. frustrating loss. game 4 coulda gone either way. i like them to come in and do it in boston, the right guys have been doing the right things for them. not really so of boston. i also think they have more teeth than last year with emelin and a relatively healthy murray.

Hopefully Big Rig is okay for the next game. Dont really want to rely on Jeff Schultz. Our defense was dead ass tired. But Quick came up with some huge saves. Martinez played an amazing game. As did the rest of the D. Kopitar had another outstanding game. Gabby was clutch. Man this team is scary. Even when they were getting beat they found a way to win. That is the kind of play that wins championships.

He kind of reminds me of Allen Iverson with his motor and DGAF attitude.

No update on Reg and I didn't see him but I am guessing he doesn't play in Game 2 at least. Schultz recall, if they have anyone else go I guess Campbell-Forbort-McNabb would be the next guys in line in that order.

Anaheim had a million chances to win. Quick one huge mistake, maybe a couple small ones but pretty flawless apart from the Beleskey goal.

Ducks definitely played the better 70 or so minutes but Kings had the right mix of puck luck, opportunism and persistence, I guess.

I think Voynov can be exploited, especially as his ice time goes up because of injuries. He doesn't win a lot of battles and his effort backchecking is also a little suspect at times.

Ducks shuffled their guys a bit. I think I'd dress Palmieri for sure and probably Winnik over Silfverberg. I have been underwhelmed by him all year, really, and I thought he showed promise in Ottawa.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

I still dont know how Regehr got hurt. You know good ol NBC doesnt like showing important plays like that. Doughty was our only dman that still looked fresh. I heard 32 or 33 minutes of ice time. That is insane. Shit even Martinez had 28 minutes. Muzzin looked to be sucking wind all 3rd period and OT. Voynov's effort is concerning at times. I dont know what to make of him right now. I would have never thought Muzzin and Martinez would be playing better than him. But they are.

Any word on Willie Mitchell? I'm guessing he is out for the series unless it goes deep. Hopefully Regehr only misses a game or two at the most. Schultz is garbage. I would rather have Campbell.

They are not saying a lot on Mitchell, trying to see how he responds to treatment. If I had to bet, I'd bet against him playing in this series.

Had a lot of hard fought good chances, the D didn't contain him as much as in game 1 or even in the Columbus series, tonight he just got stopped by good goaltending. A good sign going forward for him hopefully

Still worth noting even without all the goals people are making a big deal of, he's still making an impact just being on the ice. If they keep winning with the team basically playing Crosby rules and only taking him out that's ok with me.

Miserable possession numbers all year, and the woman-beater in goal finally came down to earth.

There's a lot of young talent there to appreciate, but that club has work to do to be a contender.

i dont think they are any more a sham than minnesota, who has some established players but not that many. they are maybe a year behind minnesota in the whole process but that's made up for by having just a little more talent.

i kept waiting for the avs to crash to earth this year but i think they are somewhat legit. not a contender but easily could be in this round and hanging tough.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

weak voice, red face and just a look of a guy beaten. i dont mean to imply that it bodes anything going forward.

to me the pieces are there. they have the puck a lot and in the first game i thought both teams were better than they were in game 2. i think the shot totals are borderline meaningless, because L.A. wasnt even trying to possess the puck late yesterday and they poured on a lot of shots late in game 1.

so to me you can look at it one of two ways. either they lost two games that were there for the taking or they have been outplaying their opponent and just need to break through.

i lean toward the former, but they are owed some breaks. tying goal in game 1, wow, terrible bounce. they did just about everything right and it wound up burning them. last night they have two forwards (uh, silfverberg and koivu?) behind the net and martinez has time to read the copyright information on the puck before shooting.

those things have a way of evening out, i mean look at the shitty puck luck the kings had early in their series with the sharks.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

They dont look as beaten as the Sharks did after losing 2 in a row. But they were clearly frustrated. You can tell by the runs they were taking at players. They were more interested in taking runs then chasing loose pucks or fighting for the pucks on the boards. Im just waiting for them to get burned on odd man rushes because of their style of play. Also I love how every teams answer to the Kings since they won the cup is hit them. That is the Kings style you think hitting them is going to rattle them? Sharks and the Blues did it last year. Sharks and now the Ducks are doing it this year. The one team to beat them in the last 3 playoffs has been the Blackhawks who use speed and skill. Ducks have both and they have big physical guys. But right now they look like the Kings lite. Getzlaf and Perry have been shut down. Plus the big thing is they came into the series with a clear cut goalie. If they go down quick on Thursday I wouldnt be surprised to see them pull Hiller. They outplayed a tired Kings team. But it wasnt as dominate as the first game. Plus the Kings went into their defensive shell the whole 3rd period.

really nothing to having the SOG advantage in this series.

boudreau is a good coach, i dont want to say he has outcoached darryl in the series outright, but yes, he has been better IMO. part of it is having more options but i think he has also made good strategic adjustments.

sutter, by contrast, isn't really matching lines and the few lineup tweaks he has made havent worked. penalty kill is a disaster. part of that is personnel to be sure. martinez gave them a lot down the stretch but he has some real deficiencies. voynov has been subpar wire to wire, and now they are asking him to do MORE, including kill penalties. out of his element. greene is overextended, too, he is pretty limited with all the back problems and what not he has gone through. so i mean part of it is circumstance but not much seems to be working other than experience and resolve, which are kind of always there. tonight their execution did get better, but by then it was already garbage time.

ducks, sure they have more options but some of these moves have been bold. the goalie thing is rather obvious and cant be overlooked. how many coaches would have had balls like that? i think darryl might be one of them, he doesnt stand for middling and mediocrity. but that's a maybe and i think few if any other coaches would have gone to a 20 year old rookie over their regular season No. 1. then you have vatanen for fistric. honestly i said before the series i would have had fowler-lovejoy beauchemin-vatanen and lindholm-robidas as the 6 D, but still he had other options to replace robidas and went with vatanen, who has been very good. obviously he is getting a lot out of his big men, devo and maroon. i just see their role guys chipping in. la's guys, eh, not really. they have one line producing. i would almost consider moving carter up and just making a super line at this point. play gaborik-kopitar-carter and pray to god they score two goals and you get one out of the rest of the group. williams has faded into obscurity on that third line. mike richards is only marginally better than trevor lewis offensively right now, he has really had a down year. when you look at this kings team, it's a credit to their solidarity and competitiveness that they are even playing right now

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

(c) Bruce Boudreau

i think it has been a weird series to evaluate by the numbers. you had the ducks outpossessing and outshooting the kings by wide margins at times, mostly game 1, and then the kings doing it to them last night. but honestly the kings had an edge in shots at like 25-20 and they weren't carrying the play. they started to pour it on at that point.

a lot of it has just come down to mistakes. both teams have had two of their own players wipe each other out (voynov/kopitar, koivu/silfverberg) that led to goals. last night L.A. gives them everything off turnovers, frankly, muzzin blows a tire, greene coughs up a lousy first pass, martinez gets worked in the neutral zone, etc. defense giving the puck away. conversely for all the shots the kings took, the only way they could score or even come close was when they started getting deflections and 2nd/3rd chances.

there just hasn't been a lot of opportunity to do much five on five. i think last night the perreault goal and a couple of kopi's setups early in the series were the only "pretty" plays, most things have just been a matter of rolling with the punches and then capitalizing on a mistake.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

they get him some forwards who can score. This is great news for fantasy owners of Hornqvist and Wilson though.

Caps (or any team with a vacancy) should hire Willie Desjardins. Mark my words, he will be a successful NHL coach. He has been coaching Dallas's AHL affiliate in Austin. It's no accident that the Stars have had well-prepared neophytes step into important roles for them.

pacioretty is legit, big, fast and skilled. he is a little streaky but he is putting his game together. lars eller reminds me a lot of saku in his youth, bulldog with a nice imagination and not much fear in him. brendan gallagher was a nice find. doug murray isn't what he was but having him and emelin means a big upgrade over what they had in the playoffs last year. emelin is a nice player, difference maker in some games. therrien i think is a good coach, too, he lost the room in pittsburgh but if he had been able to stay on as coach i actually think they would have been even more successful. good tactician and usually very good at protecting leads (which made that game 2 meltdown even weirder).

they have enough skill that their top guys/top unit could get hot in any game, that line with brassard and pouliot is very reliable now, their D is just thick enough to actually help hank, etc.

they arent a great team or a totally complete team, but who is? particularly in the east. i find myself rooting for these guys against the pens, which is weird, because on the hate scale i would have the blue shirts much higher typically. their hard working guys work hard and i have to think eventually their top guys will be a little more entertaining. conversely the pens have all the elements in place but they get flustered by the littlest things. why? neal has quickly developed into my least favorite player in the world. crosby had better get his head straight if he wants to realize his potential. there is no excuse for this guy not be in beast mode and not be more of a leader out there. he is way too good to be getting taken off his game by a little agitation and frustration.

Or is it just the kind of excuse making people look for at this time of year. It's not even that he's playing awful, he was the league leader in assists in the playoffs last I looked a few days ago, but yes he needs to take over games and put the puck in the net at this point.

Lots of talk that he's not at 100%, but you always hear that around playoff time. With him though it seems he needs to be at 100% or he can't rise above it.

Disco Dan is 100% coaching for his job tonight also, no question there right?

It's hard to say, I mean sometimes it is super obvious like when Kesler seemed to have everything go wrong in the middle of his body or Gaborik suddenly couldn't lift the puck because his shoulder was shredded. With Sid like you said he seems to be skating OK and doing a pretty good job carving out some space, he just doesn't look dominant.

>Lots of talk that he's not at 100%, but you always hear that

I think he has played through a good deal of injuries in his career, i'm more struck but his and malkin's inability to get it going at the same time and crosby's temperment. by now i figured he'd be above getting bent out of shape, then again that's partly his teammates responsibility to get in there and goon it up a little for him.

actually, I'm bickering over the fact that you're not appreciating what you have... Same way I tell some Sharks fans and haters that at least the Sharks are competitive every year... It would be horrible to follow a team like the Leafs...

Sharks, Kings, Ducks beat the shit out of each other for 2 rounds. Last year the Kings were beat to shit by the time they got to Chicago in the WCF's. This year its looking the same. I dont see the Ducks or Kings getting past the Blackhawks. Unless Kaner starts punching cab drivers in the back of the head again while they wait for an opponent resulting in a suspension.

I was pretty pissed when the Wings won last year and robbed us of that matchup, but Detroit played well and it might be even better this year.

I see an LAK-CHI series going six games and looking somewhat similar to last year. In some ways the Kings are healthier than they were then, I guess, but they did a good job of maximizing what they had last year.

I think it's going to be a Chicago-Montreal final either way though. ECF is going to be an epic goaltending matchup but I like Montreal's ability to find the big goal a little more. Love the clutch factor of Subban, Briere and Eller.

Kings are way healthier this year than last. Last year our D was banged up along with our forwards. Right now the only forward I think is banged up is Carter and he is still playing well. But this year we have more speed with Gabby and Pearson. But in order for the Kings to beat them they would have to play perfect.

But we still gotta win one more in Anaheim before we have to worry about them. Lets hope Kane goes on a drunken bender while he waits and gets a suspension.

yeah but how is this defense going to hold up against chicago coming in waves? they put their balls on the table tonight but anaheim helped them immensely. lots of guys playing tentative. getzlaf was terrible and he deserved it. perry was around the net and stuff, he played OK. lot of guys who had jump earlier in the series didn't. kings put the screws to them and tightened up some things, but overall anaheim's first power play unit was terrible and it cost them the game.

the kings are obviously in a good position to win this series but thinking about seven games against chicago with voynov, greene and martinez all overextended, eh, i don't like the odds there. they are healthier up front, you are right, but not on d. i also think they have some guys playing worse, namely mike richards. he's kind of too versatile to scratch, plus there's no good option to sub for him at center. otherwise, i'm sure darryl would have thought about it.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

honestly i love seeing games in both buildings. boston can be ho-hum at times but for a big game, holy shit, the place rocks. incredible atmosphere at the finals there. montreal is always awesome, fuck a ROAD game with a good show is awesome. i saw them come into anaheim a few years ago. they fell behind 3-0. they scored three straight to force overtime. of course in OT they scored to win it. oh my fucking god man, maybe 4000 habs fans (a lot for that far from home) were there and it sounded like a full-on home game. it was le centre honda in there. LOUD.

I just didnt get why people thought Boston was so unbeatable. They won the Cup in 2011 largely on the back of a departed goalie and, significantly, Chara/Seidenberg's dominance as a pairing. Seidenberg was hurt and Chara is slowing down very quickly without him there.

Pittsburgh made me a little nervous but they have a way of beating themselves that is really dependable.

Boston was really let down by its top line and best offensive players. If those guys put in even half the results they did I doubt the Habs beat them.

I still don't respect this NYR team as constructed. No visible offense (still waiting for Nash or MSL to show up). Decent defense. Largely rely on probably the best goalie in the NHL. Same formula for years.

They might make the finals like NJD two years ago and get cleaned up by the WC champion.

I had PIT beating them, but then again, I didn't expect Crosby's massive choke job.

yeah and they were on fire late in the year. i didnt expect that. i just think montreal had a good mix, like they don't have a No. 1 center but they are real strong up the middle. just have something going on with every line/pairing.

>I still don't respect this NYR team as constructed. No visible

they have had 55 power plays, wow, more than anyone in the playoffs. imagine if their PP was just adequate right now. they'd have played less games. some guys are getting it going. nash is not one of them. i always thought richards was pretty overrated, to me he is a good No. 2 center but he gets paid like an elite No. 1.

he seems to be making a habit of it, whew, how stinky was their offense against boston last year?

In response to Reply # 224

i guess it's because their offense is constructed in a weird way. they don't have the huge sniper or super complete No. 1 center but they score a lot of goals. 3rd/4th lines are going now, that's so important for a deep run. their defense has nice balance now, much stronger than last year when they just had all kind of problems on their back end (including goaltending) late in the year.

both teams have great goalies, too.

i wouldn't count anyone out that's left, to be honest. i think the rangers are a lot like boston, they just didn't have as many things in place throughout the year because they made some significant changes (coaching staff and some key players). they have a little less scoring pop but even that has a lot of room to improve quickly.

montreal was pretty close to boston all year in the standings and they just licked them pretty good considering how close the teams were and that the series went 7. i dont see any holes in their team. they have guys who are good in big games. i could see them winning the cup. rangers i could also see winning but they will need godlike play from lundqvist. the bad news for everyone else is that he's capable of it.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

The B's just got straight up beat down in that series. I can't really understand it because they don't seem good, but they are always in the right spot, they swarm on D and the are fast.

Plus the refs help them out and the NHL probably would like to see a Canadian team win (SORRY - had to get that out of my system).

obviously they would like to see if babcock becomes available and it could be a van/nyr type coach swap thing.

they probably want the new gm to be involved in the process of picking the coach or, if it's babcock, the new gm and the new coach will probably be the same person.
