don't know about how it compares to Mayweather, but white people (more specifically tennis white people) did not love pearl breaded Venus and Serena at all. Crowds were systematically rooting for their opponents, even when said opponent was reviled previously (like Hingis), even American crowds, and you had tennis pundits ranting about how their physical style of play was a detriment to the sport.
it took them close to ten years to gain full acceptance in the tennis world. Serena lost favor recently based on legitimate reasons (her hating on Sloane Williams and all the Rolling Stone article gossip deserved to be clowned and hated on), but for years, white tennis fans were hating for no reason whatsoever.
