"Poll question: All-Time Best Tournament Performances By One Player"
Tue Mar-25-14 10:03 AM by vee-lover

I listed them in the order according to who I thought have had the best all-time tournament performances. I only listed players whose performances resulted in a championship

-Danny Manning...the closest I've seen of one player literally carrying a team single handedly to the championship against an Oklahome home team that I thought was superior to Kansas as far as talent

-Glen Rice...still holds the record for most points scored in the tournament (184) was absolutely incredible thee entire tournament

-Christian Laettner...this was the season where he truly earned the distinction as one of the greatest college players not just in the ACC but of all-time. How many game winners that he hit during the 92 ncaa tournament, his game winner over kentucky is still the greatest game winner I've seen in college

-Carmelo Anthony...the team caught fire but especially Melo whose offensive game was so polished even as a freshman. I really had him ahead of Lebron at that point after watching Melo do what he did against vs division 1 competition while Lebron was playing against high schoolers

-Pervis Ellison...Only Melo played better as a freshmen (imo) in the tournament than 'Never Nervous' Pervis. He played his best game in the finals vs Duke where they losing at the half and he came out and stepped up big, including hitting the game winner

honorable mention (Kemba Walker)

Poll result (14 votes)
Danny Manning (3 votes)Vote
Glen Rice (3 votes)Vote
Christian Laettner (2 votes)Vote
Carmelo Anthony (5 votes)Vote
Pervis Ellison (0 votes)Vote
Other (1 votes)Vote

... but I struggle to think of a better individual performance in a key tourney game than Laettner's in The Game.

HE DIDN'T MISS A SHOT OR FREE THROW ALL GAME LONG.

But he struggled in the Final Four, and that team was so balanced, so it's hard to put him as the best TOURNEY performer for an entire tourney.

I can't fathom not putting Kemba on the poll. I know Kemba's title game wasn't that impressive, but I know he dropped 30 multiple times during that run. That team doesn't make the second weekend without Kemba.

Laettner was sensational during the Dukies entire tournament run and he was cleary their best player and maybe that one game vs Kentucky was the best *game* by one player but Laettner wasn't quite as good as Manning or Rice for the entire tournament.

Kemba was awful as was the team in that championship and for that reason I can't put him in my top 5

That was not only the greatest individual performance in a key tournament game, it was the greatest individual performance in the history of Western Civilization.

Forget second weekend, that team doesn't even make the tourney without Kemba.

if one game disqualifies someone, Laettner should be off the list well before Kemba.

kemba's shitty final game was still the best of anyone in that game. Laettner was forgettable in a final four game. come on, man. Kemba should be on the poll.

and he hit several game winners including the one that's considered the greatest game/game winner in college hoops...the game which he was perfect from the field/ft line...and he did it while having a much bigger target on his back which made it that more impressive.

of all they were the DEFENDING CHAMPS!!!!! lol

and 3rdly, EVERYONE HATED CHRISTIAN LAETTNER

and lastly, it was Duke

Laettner clearly had a bigger target on his back and he delivered game after game on the biggest stage...and against far tougher competition than what Kemba faced in this watered down college basketball era we're in now.

but your argument against kemba has shifted because you got called out for overlooking a final four game.

>and he hit several game winners including the one that's
>considered the greatest game/game winner in college
>hoops...the game which he was perfect from the field/ft
>line...and he did it while having a much bigger target on his
>back which made it that more impressive.

Kemba had a much bigger target. HE WAS THE ENTIRE TEAM ON OFFENSE. Duke had grant hill and bobby hurley balling. Kemba had good players around him, but they were ghost, excluding one game by Lamb. kemba always led his team in points and was the assists guy and rebounded like crazy for a guard. laettner had so much more help, it's not even funny. so Conn won ugly a couple times--the only reason they won any games was Kemba. There were games Duke won w/o Laettner balling.

Guy destroyed Pitt in the sweet 16 then pulled the 4th every triple double in tournament history in Elite 8 against the #1 team.

The team getting rolled by like 30 vs Kansas in the final 4 hurt the legacy though.

Jack Givens finals performance for Kentucky in 1978 v. Duke is one of the best..if not the best finals performance ever...

also..

even though he didn't really play in the final game....

Tyus Edney's 1995 performance in the tournament was amazing...

One of my favorite tourney performances ever anyway. 36 to upset UNC, then 32 more to almost knock off Florida. One of the most fun, out of nowhere, put a team on his back displays I've seen, which is my favorite part of watching the tourney.

In response to Reply # 0

Even though they fell short in the title game. That team did not have anyone else who even sniffed the NBA. Wallace dribbled it up and hit the game winning 3 with seconds left to beat Georgia in the sweet 16 game and had 30 and 15 in that game, and had 29 and 10 against Kentucky in the title game. He put that team on his back.

Melo had a great tournament too and it resulted in a title, but he also had more talent around him.
