"Your team's Mt. Rushmore."

Since Mount Rushmore has been a big deal lately.
Name the team, then name the 4 dudes on that team's Mt. Rushmore.

NO HONORABLE MENTIONS...4 DUDE'S PERIOD!!!

I'll start:
New York Knicks:
- Walt Clyde Frazier
- Big Pat Ewing
- Willis Reed
- Earl the Pearl

In response to Reply # 43

he was the no. 1 guy on the team for openers, and his numbers are stronger. mchale was a helluva player and maybe better at his peak (scoring wise, solid defense) but i think i would go with cowens

not really taking issue with your list as much as the fact that he isnt on any and often seems to be part of the widespread 70s omissions.

Hondo whips his ass left and right. If it were four players I think it would be Russell, Cowens, Bird and Hondo. I get Auerbach but he should just be the whole goddamn mountain if he's included.

Too many good choices though. Both Joneses, McHale, Pierce, Jojo White, DJ (over Ainge at least), the list goes on and on. Obviously this recent group (KG, Ray) would get a look for most lesser franchises.

In response to Reply # 4

You can swap Tony w/ TJ Ford in 2007 & I still feel that the Spurs would have beaten the Cavs. Eric Snow & Boobie Gibson were tailor made for Tony's speed & quickness.

On the other hand, it would be tough to replace Manu circa 2005. He was the best offensive weapon against the Pistons for the better part of that series until Timmay slammed the door shut in the 4th quarter of Gm 7. He did it against a team that made Bean seem average just a year before in 2004.

Plus, even after it became Tony's team, the ball was always in Manu's hand when the team needed a bucket. If Tony had pulled an Isiah in Gm 7 instead of completely disappearing as he has in a couple of series then the narrative might have been different.

WHAT'S GOOD *****? What's REALLY good?!?!????!!! Ha HA!

Gus and Jack were old guys past their prime when i first started watching ball.

If Gus hadn't won a title, I might argue for swapping out Dale Ellis. He was kind of an NBA vagabond after a while, but his first run in Seattle was pretty solid. Same with Jack Sikma over Tom Chambers - title tips it Jack's way. Sentimentally I'd like to include Nate, but he doesn't have the numbers...

Mostly this list just reminds me how rare it is to get a true HOFer on a basketball team. But yeah, can't really argue with that list at all.

My earliest Supes memories is of those two & Downtown Freddy Brown. I remember trying to watch games on an old b&w tv while getting my haircut in this barbershop. Barber would have to keep telling me to sit still or the flattop was gonna get fucked up.

I thought about Dale & initially had Chambers over Sikma too. Mac-10 gotta raw deal here but he was a joy to watch...especially on defense

Jeah it sorta sucks that Kemp didn't join Gary in the HOF. Seems like those 2 belong together there. Hopefully we'll see their numbers raised in the rafters of a new arena here soon.

typically I am hyping the fuck out of Gus Williams but in this case i see him and DJ as strong candidates who fall just short of Lenny Wilkens. Wilkens was a similarly productive player and also coached the franchise to its only title.

Spencer Haywood is maybe the only other guy I'd give a look to apart from those six, oh, and also Ray Allen.

Had he been a great color commentary co-host alongside Kevin Calabro...Sikma would've been bumped. Truth be told I'm having 2nd thoughts even w/o that.

Haywood was before my time & I'm not really up on his history. Ray got similar consideration as DJ & also left out for the same reason.

Lenny, Spencer Haywood, and Ray are all pretty solid candidates. I wouldn't bounce Gus or Sikma over them though.

Most of this is probably due to my age, though. I never watched Spencer Haywood or Lenny Wilkens actually play. I only saw later versions, and they haven't been super ingrained in Seattle basketball since their playing days.

Ray Allen was a goddam revelation in Seattle, but he's not a Sonic. I never realized what an all around talent he really was. Before he came to Seattle, I bought into the 'jump shooter' label. During his time in Seattle I realized how well rounded his game actually was. Don't get me wrong, fans in Seattle still love him, i think, but he's more of a Celtic or even Milwaukee Buck to me. His biggest shot came as a member of the Heat.

It was always weird when he was here because they traded GP to get him. He never really felt like a Sonic to me either. As soon as he started to feel like one of ours he was shipped off to the Celtics.

Sounds crazy but he might've played his best ball here. Seemed like he had to do more to keep the team afloat.

Yeah I still consider him a Celtic first & foremost

GP, Sikma and Kemp are close enough.

Wilkens put in time with the Hawks and stuff. Still I would consider him because he had a long enough stint there (esp compared with DJ, Gus, Allen) and then coached the team to a title.

Could say I remember Gus more as a Bullet the same way, but they were their top players on the title team with DJ doing more scoring. They both spent about five years there without looking.

Allen played his prime in Seattle essentially, to me that was where you saw the most of his game. Who cares if they traded GP for him? Was it not one of the smartest moves in franchise history as it turned out?

I don't barely remember Gus as a Bullet. He'll always be a Sonic to me. Lenny had some nice stints w/ the Hawks & accomplished a lot there too. It seems like he associates himself w/ Seattle more though too.

At the time I cared a lot cause it was certainly the end of that era

Perhaps. G was past his prime & we were never known for making many smart moves over the course of my time watching em.

with payton i didnt have any real emotional investment. two of my favorite players being swapped. i did know it was a huge W for seattle though because they were getting a younger player as a result of a salary dump. i dont remember what the motivation was, i know they had redd but i recall kohl also considering selling the team. i could be wrong on that though.

LaSalle Thompson was a beast too and Augustin really balled out for us. TJ is the MVP though, his teams were our best teams ever.

>>Mets: Keith, Seaver, Piazza, Doc
>No Darryl? WOW!

I'd LOVE to include Darryl. But Keith was still the guy that organized that team, and was the best defensive player at his position, perhaps ever. Seaver's a definite, Piazza earns it for bringing the team to the Series in 2000 and THAT homer in 2001 alone (and the team agrees- he caught the last pitch at Shea . . . from Seaver). I actually was between Doc and Darryl . . .

>>Nets: Petrovic, Kidd, Dr. J, Coleman
>D.C.? Damn its struggle-ville huh?

pretty much. . . it's DC, or K-Mart or Kerry Kittles.

I might fuck around and put all those guys ahead of Bob Love. Love to me is maybe just ahead of Rush Street Reggie Theus, mainly on the strength of his playing a little longer in Chicago and also his defensive ability.

Rose should be there, don't turn your back on your boy now. Those other three, eh, whatever, too tired to argue, I'll just say they are in the mix.

Folks like Kerr and Butterbean put in some HEAVY work....

If Rose gets 70 percent of his health back dude will def. be on that list though...

winning a league mvp puts him ahead of the van liers and sloans and loves, sorry. plus dude is a native son. i cant believe i am riding for rose but then again i cant believe i am having to explain this to chicagoans. i mean bill walton would be on portland's monument, for example. yeah i know he delivered a chip but still, similar situation with a somewhat similar franchise.

I'd fuck around and put Mahmoud Abdul Rauf on there just to cleanse my pallet. I guess Reef if you wanted to go back to Van, otherwise whatever, probably Mike Miller or White Chocolate. I love Tony Allen but don't really get his inclusion here, though like I said that fourth spot is looking pretty thin for now.

I'd switch Miller out for either Shane or Conley, and right now I'm leaning towards Conley and that's just cause I've rode with Conley since he got drafted. He may not be as beloved as the others, but without his improvement the past few seasons we're not as good.

Miller still is a good choice though.

Sixers

Wilt
AI
Dr J
Hal Greer

Hard to leave off Billy Cunningham, Moses Malone and Charles Barkley here. But the first three are inarguable and Greer was a career Sixer, fuck he even played with the Nats. Moses delivered a chip, Barkley was perhaps the biggest star and Cunningham was part of both championships in Philadelphia as a helluva player and a helluva coach. But I will stick with Greer.

Flyers

Parent
Clarke
Barber
Mark Howe

Watson, Desjardins ... these are guys I thought of but Howe was their best DMan. Lots of arguables like Lindros, LeClair, Propp, Leach, Kerr et al. When you look at it though, outside of the LCB and Legion of Doom lines, the Flyers were seldom a team dependent on big stars. They stayed competitive with balance.

Eagles

Van Buren
Bednarik
Reggie White
Brian Dawkins

I give naaaaaaaaaaan un fuck what anyone says. These are the four. Zero argument.

Phillies

Mike Schmidt
Steve Carlton
Robin Roberts
Richie Ashburn

I don't know shit about turn of the century players like Ed Delahanty or even Chuck Klein and Grover Alexander. If we were going strictly off the best players who played in a Phils uniform, I would have to think about Dick Allen and Jimmie Foxx. But Allen was never embraced by the fans (combination of personality and dat 'CISM) and had better years in Chicago. Foxx put in work the A's, Red Sox, etc. I'd love to include a recent player, I would Howard serious consideration. If you switched the length of his tenure with JRoll's, he'd be there for sure. Of course JRoll and Chase I thought about, but I think these four are pretty firm for me.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Krejci is solid but only elite in the postseason (which is awesome, just not Rushmore worthy). Bergy is the captain as soon as Z retires and is really the rock of the forward group. Z is the only hall of famer on this team though, and frankly, with the franchise's ridiculous history of great blue liners, he would fit nicely if they manage a second Cup with him wearing the C and anchoring the defense.

Teddy and Yaz are easy no brainers. Petey is the best pitcher in franchise history. Papi is Papi, we don't win any of these chips without him, he has embraced the city, and his speech alone would get him close. He's the best postseason player in club history, he was honestly the first player I thought of.

Pistons:

Joe Dumars
Ben Wallace

That fourth slot was tough...really a tossup between Ben, Bob Lanier, and Chauncey. I'm probably underrating Bob Lanier because he was from before my time.

Red Wings:
Gordie Howe
Steve Yzerman
Nicklas Lidstrom
Terry Sawchuck

Lions:
Barry Sanders
Billy Sims
Calvin Johnson
Bobby Layne

Tigers:
Ty Cobb
Hank Greenberg
Al Kaline
Miguel Cabrera

But yzerman was never the best player in the world

Sergei was, and has a Hart Trophy to validate that

If fedorov had played in the 80's for Demers instead of the 90's in Bowman's "left wing lock" it wouldnt seem ao blasphemous. Yzerman's era was a veritable bonanza of scoring

with the Wings...that first high scoring era in the 80's and early 90's, and then the all around player and leader of a team that won three chips. All while being the captain for a LONG time.

That one Hart trophy season that Federov had doesn't make up for the fact that the rest of his career he underachieved. He was a great two way player, and probably the most fun player to watch skate IMO, but taking Yzerman off of that list is downright WRONG.

But "underachieved" is a tricky word here. He was 3rd in the 90's in NHL playoff scoring, had 4 consecutive 20 point playoffs (3rd player in history), and led the 90's in +/-.

The fact is Sergei was ahead of his time. He looked so good playing his team oriented 2 way style that people thought he wasn't trying. His 4 and 5 goal games, instead of being celebrated, became evidence that he coasted usually. The reality is that his offensive skill didn't usually come with equally elite ability (and more importantly DESIRE) to defend.

The same criticisms levelled at him could be aimed at Pav and Z but 91 paved the way for them to be loved for their 2 way game, whereas all 91 got was scorn for not scoring 40/60/100 every year. Sergei was WAY more respected throughout the league than he was by his own fans. No less than Mario and Wayne each independently called him the best in the world.

Ive never in my life seen a more dominant NHL player on both ends and given that Yzerman won all of his Cups with Sergei as their best playoff performer, I gotta go with 91.

Sergei was by far my favorite hockey player. I didn't even start watching hockey until I got NHL 95 on my Super Nintendo, and Sergie was a BEAST on there. I remember making trades in that game and having a line of Sergie, Pavel Bure, and Theoren Fleury that would skate circles around everyone lol...

Man I was HURT when Sergie left. I could see if it was about money, but he took LESS to leave Detroit. Eff him.

The stories on how it went down dont align from every perspective, and more than one version indicate that the Wings pulled their offer when he didnt sign it on the spot.

There is also a school of thought that the real sticking point wasnt money but ice time, specifically compared to Yzerman. Fedorov had been a top line talent centering the second line for about 8 years by that point.

The CBA expiring the year after has also been cited hy both sides in terms of horrible timing no one could control. Fedorov himself said that had his contract expire a year or two earlier he would have extended during the season no muss no fuss.

Either way I think the Wings lost themselves the 04 and 06 cups as soon as Fedorov left. I said during those years it would be a long time before the Wings won another Cup but who could have guessed Zetterberg would have developed into a top 3-5 player.

Carl Crawford

David Price
Ben Zobrist

Zobrist gets it for being rock steady for so long. His numbers are rarely flashy but they're almost never in the dumps. This last spot could also go to Carlos Pena. BJ Upton showed flashes of brilliance here but lacked consistency.

he was never able to fully recover from his knee injury. He came back and had some nice years, but it still was cut short. Seattle still loves him though.

Tough to leave Walt off after just becoming a first ballot HOFer. If I had to pick 2 offensive & 2 defensive players, Easley gets the nod there too.

couldn't stand the dude, probably because he stayed putting up big numbers at ease playing behind mack strong and that all-world left side of the o-line.

i'm probably in the minority of niner fans that was more slightly more bothered by the '03-'07 holmgren hawks than this current bunch.

mainly because we sucked and y'all were winning the division at 9-7 and even got to the SB.

back when the rams were our big rival

those days were fun & frustrating but they barely compare to the current state of affairs

i'm already wondering if they'll schedule the niners here for the season opener/banner raising this september

Dave Kreig was our QB during our first taste of winning NFL football. He's not forgotten- he might even be in our Ring of Honor, but he's not on our Rushmore.

Excellent fumbling reference, though. Soap dish hands, that guy.

My dad used to say he fit the basic criteria for being a Seahawks QB - he could take an ass whipping and still get up.

i dunno it's tough because i dont know that much about the early days of their franchise, though they seem unremarkable. i know they had some guys like gaylord perry, willie horton, i guess harold reynolds, etc.

but the griffey/martinez era is where it starts. griffey, martinez, a rod, the big unit, buhner, olerud, ichiro and feliz pretty much make up the potential pool. i'd go with griffey, martinez, johnson and ichiro. let king felix play his career out and then take another look IMO.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

truth be told i considered a rod before ichiro, they both had huge impacts before they left but neither one of em were very close to beating my top 4

In response to Reply # 189

He spent 10 years on the team, but half of those were before he became one of the greatest left-handed pitchers of all-time.

He won one Cy Young with the Mariners, four away from the Mariners.

Left the team before their big runs in 2000 & 2001 and then went on to win World Series MVP for the Diamondbacks. He tried to return to Arizona in order to win his 300th game.

Felix will probably supplant him on most of the cumulative leaderboards by next season.

I think Griffey, Edgar, and Felix are the locks with Johnson a strong candidate for the fourth spot.

first of all, he was 6'10", had mullet, a sexually suggestive nickname like Big Unit, and threw fucking flames. He's also one of the most intimidating athletes we've ever had in Seattle in any sport.

You can look up his stats, and they're nice, but...

He threw the first no-hitter in Seattle history. I watched his career in other places and I still feel in my heart only Seattle knew how to really cheer for him. 2 strikes, and everyone was on their goddam feet making an unbearable amount of noise (Kingdome!), just waiting to kick it up a notch on strike 3. This, for a guy that was always among the league leaders in strikeouts (and walks if hitters weren't scared enough).

Cy Young - for a period in Seattle it was either Randy or Pedro Martinez. Those were your two choices for most un-hittable pitchers baseball. Pedro may have been better/maybe not, but our guy was 6'10" and had a mullet.

F-ing 1995 - Randy won the one game playoff against former Mariner Mark Langston, to put us in the playoffs against the Yankees. (we'd never been before. ever.) He won game 3 in that series, which was an absolute must have (down 0-2 after losing an extra inning heartbreaker in game 2). Then he came back on one days rest to pitch relief in game 5. He pitched 3 scoreless innings and gutted out the series clinching win. All this literally saved baseball in Seattle. That's not to say there weren't other equally bad ass contributions (Jr. & Edgar were f-ing heroic), but without RJ balling out Seattle doesn't have a baseball team.

In a generation of swine, the one-eyed pig is king.

If you want to pretend Sosa wasn't a bigger deal as a Cub than Dawson ever was and that his career dwarfs that of Dawson's, fine. He left under bad terms and there's the whole steroid cloud. Sosa was a much better player with the Cubs but I can see a reasonable way to ignore that if you want to go with intangibles and such, fine. But Santo was a better player than Dawson and a more beloved Cub.

Andre Dawson with the Cubs:

6 seasons: .285/.327/.507 (125 OPS+)
867 Games, 174 HR, 587 RBIs
18.7 rWAR, 17.2 fWAR
5 All-Star teams
2 Gold Gloves
1 Silver Slugger
1 MVP
0 Retired Numbers
0 Years spent with the team after retirement as an announcer
0 Nicknames as "the single biggest Cub fan of all-time"
0 Statues outside of Wrigley Field of him playing baseball

Ron Santo with the Cubs:

14 seasons: .279/.366/.472 (128 OPS+)
2126 Games, 337 HR, 1290 RBIs
72.2 rWAR, 71.9 fWAR
9 All-Star teams
5 Gold Gloves
1 Lou Gehrig Award
1 Retired Number
20 years spent with the team as a broadcaster
1 Nickname as "the single biggest Cub fan of all-time"
1 Statue outside of Wrigley Field of him playing baseball

-Ron Santo was the first player to ever revoke a trade because he couldn't bear the thought of leaving Chicago
-Andre Dawson was a better player in Montreal than he was in Chicago

-Ron Santo died and had his ashes spread over Wrigley Field
-Andre Dawson worked for the Marlins.

Actually, I agree with you...

I'm aware that Halas is THE God of Chicago Sports...

But when it comes to his actual playing days that was with a different team and not with the Bears who had yet not even been moved to Chicago...

Papa Bear gets on the Rushmore because he is the MOST important coach/owner in NFL history...There is no NFL without him...But yeah, u already know that....

>not to mention being a native and lifelong chicagoan.
>
>if there's a bears rushmore, he's the first face on it....
>shit, if there's a NFL rushmore he's the first face on it.

Like I said...lol...I thought it was only players...Papa Bear means more than any of the players I named on my list...I'm well aware of that...Hell he arguably means more than any other figure in the NFL...

But I guess I was taking my cue from others here who named players and not LARGER THAN LIFE owners/coaches...And I was taking my cue from the original Lebron-Rushmore convo....

If I do it your way, this is my new list for the Bears:

Halas, Sweetness, Ditka, Butkus...

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

No Artis Gilmore? I dunno, Rose accomplished enough for me, it's not like the franchise has really been shit outside of the Jordan era.

>

>Sweetness, Samurai Mike, Butkus, Lac

No disrespect to Urlacher but he doesn't belong on there. Sweetness and Butkus are no brainers. To me Ditka belongs there. I loved Singletary but I mean Dent, Hampton, those guys all have claim from that era. I think my fourth guy might be Bronco Nagurski, what a bad motherfucker. Gale Sayers is obviously one I'd consider. Doug Atkins, Bill George, Sid Luckman ... these are all guys I'd think of before or right after Urlacher. That said, I am pretty sure the four are Sweetness, Butkus, Halas and Ditka.

>Cubs--
>
>Ryno, Andre Dawson, Ernie Banks, Ferguson Jenkins

Fuck it I am not touching this one, too many years to think about. I am sure plenty of arguing could be done about the Santos and Billy Williams of the world and a bunch of real old timers.

>White Sox---
>
>Big Hurt, Fisk, Ted Lyons, Shoeless Joe

Thomas is a no brainer. Ted Lyons is a good one, kind of the ultimate hard luck pitcher. Shoeless Joe and Collins were stars of their era, I don't know that they'd make my cut though. Fox, Allen, Aparicio, Appling, Dick Allen, Minoso ... these all seem like fine choices.

I guess Thomas, Allen, Fox and Appling would be my group of four.

>Blackhawks---
>
>Denis Savard, Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita, Patrick Kane

The first three are pretty obvious. I'd think about Steve Larmer and JR, but nah, not the final list. Kane to me is not there yet, I would have Tony Esposito, Glenn Hall and Pierre Pilote over him, plus of course their other three star forwards at the moment are all really strong. Quietly Duncan Keith has probably moved onto their all-time team as well, beyond Pilote I would say only Chelios and Doug Wilson would be any firmer selections.

I think my four would be Savard, Hull, Mikita and Glenn Hall over him. I could see arguments going a lot of ways for that fourth spot though, obviously.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

bednarik is like the first guy i would put up there. reggie white was better but didnt do more in an eagles uniform. i could see van buren coming off just on lack of familiarity but really i think the four are pretty clearly bednarik, white, dawkins and van buren

Jerry West won a ring as a player and then built dynasties in two different eras. Gotta be on there.
