"Why is it so hard for boxing fans to appreciate Floyd *and* Pac?"

One thing I've always loved about boxing is that
it's an individual sport, not controlled by the whims
of a reckless/clueless owner like franchised team sports -
and that you have the ability to truly create your own destiny
in the wild west environment that - for better or worse - boxing
facilitates. Although you can certainly argue that some promoters
are bent on wrecking the sport, in my experiences more really
are trying to make the best/most relevant fights happen.

But why is it that fans can only appreciate Floyd or Pacquiao,
but not both? Is it a symptom of the larger duality of the
culture that pins A. v. B.? (see, republican/democrat, black/white, gay/straight, lakers/celtics etc..)? Is it spill-over from other sporting culture where you can only be taken seriously in some circles if you are loyal to a demographic/regional team/franchise?

I'm extremely curious to investigate this because we have 2 all-time
greats in the same era, but I see so very few fans actually able
to appreciate the context in which these men are fighting in, and even worse, I see continual attempts to try and diminish the achievements of one of the fighters, while only giving credit to the other....

What's behind your reasoning for disliking either Floyd or Pacquiao and/or not acknowledging their place in history?

that the Floyd/Arum rift is really the culprit here.

It's never been that Floyd is 'afraid' of Pac or ducking him,
he's not. It's the cold war and Arum is as much (if not more)
to blame for that than Floyd.

and all indications seem as if he wasn't a hurdle when the fight was nearly done before the testing fiasco
i'm trying to remember but i'm pretty sure the anti-arum thing really ramped up after manny accepted the testing conditions
honestly floyd has offered so many reasons it's kind of hard to remember the sequence that he revealed them

but one of the /r/boxing mods on reddit is putting a pretty detailed one together

Part 1:
http://www.reddit.com/r/Boxing/comments/1rd6ou/the_floyd_manny_saga_chapter_1/

Part 2:
http://www.reddit.com/r/Boxing/comments/1t86ah/the_floyd_manny_saga_chapter_2/

It ends with the Pac vs Clottey and May vs Mosley fights. Based on his pace, it looks like Part 3 should be due any day now

Here:

http://sports.yahoo.com/box/news?slug=dw-pacman050410

It especially highlights the "24 day window" vs. the "14 day window" that essentially broke the negotiations that time around...

They say 24 hours is more than enough time to "recover" from any blood taken for testing...

Olympic athletes sometimes test hours before a competition.

2 weeks isn't enough....why exactly?

That is the crux...

"Inspectah Deck, he's like...he's like that dude thatta sit back and watch you play yourself and all that right? And see you sit there and know you lyin; and he'll take you to court after that, cuz he the Inspectah."

You can also add the media's refusal to be real about the situation between the two fighters....ARUM.

For the casual public there HAS to be a hero and a villian.

For whatever the reasons are...people choose sides.

I was a fan of both fighters.

I am more a fan of Mayweather than of Pacquiao currently.

Arum's involvement and Pacquiao's cooperation with Arum's tactics are what have pushed me away from interest in anything Pacquiao.

That said, if the fight is made I'll watch...but I can't help wishing that Arum has no part in any of it happening for a myriad of reasons.

ultimately Floyd answers to Al Haymon, but you have to believe schaefer has ALOT of control since he essentially was the master mind behind Showtime signing Floyd after schaefer got GBP former head lawyer the job as CEO of Showtime Sports...hmmmmmm
but yea no doubt ALL promoters are shady
but only 1 of the 2 promotional outfits here have been sued multiple times in the last couple of years
for lying by manny, for fucking their own fighters for money by ortiz, and for low balling offers and trying to helm ppl up with shitty contracts by james kirkland
they've been in the background for a lot of these negoiations but they've been keeping most (all?) of their fights in house the last couple of years. even if floyd wanted to fight manny i'm not sure GBP/Al Haymon would allow him

...but we have to keep up because that's the real story behind why some of the fights we want not happening.

My issue with the Mayweather and Pacquiao thing is that the fight could have been happened the first time out. Arum ruined that. He violated everything they sat down and agreed on to sabotage it.

...from the gag order to just being an all around, outstanding asshole...

You kind of have to give it to him though because he knows the audience. You say the right thing (or the wrong thing) in front of enough people and it becomes *fact*. It exerts a "pressure"...For keeping the hope for this fight alive...6-7 years hence I have to commend him. In that aspect he has done his job.

...now if Arum'll only go play in traffic all will be good.

a lot of people like to make this a racial issue and it may be for some people
but ALOT of black people think floyd is ducking

kip Bayless - "Did Floyd DUCK Manny Pacquiao?"
50 CENT - "Yes. That's a 100 million dollars, and he just left it. At this point, it's more him sorting out who's the perfect opponent than him fighting the toughest fighter to fight."

STEPHEN A SMITH (longtime die-hard Floyd-supporter), ESPN. - "I'm saying because of the Manny Pacquiao I saw yesterday, I have to believe that Floyd is DUCKING."

MIKE TYSON - "Hey listen, he doesn't want to fight the guy, it's obvious. I don't know if he's scared of him or not, but he just obviously doesn't want to fight the guy."

FLOYD MAYWEATHER SR. - "My son fighting that little man, I'm concerned about my son's life."

TIM BRADLEY - "Floyd doubts himself. Why won't he fight Manny? Scared, man. He don't wanna fight that. Floyd don't wanna fight that. He don't wanna see Manny in the ring."

LARRY HOLMES - "Pacquiao did all he can. He did all I would have done. I think Mayweather just got a little too scared if you ask me. If he thinks Pacquiao is taking drugs so what, he should just say: You take it, you kill yourself that isn't going to help you, because with my talent and ability I believe I can still beat you.' But he was scared to take that challenge. If they never fight it wont be Pacquiao's fault. Every time they came round to fighting, Mayweather put his excuses in."

JAMES TONEY - "It shows you right there that Mayweather's not a man. If you be the best fighter in the world, you fight the guys, know what I'm sayin'? No matter, don't put down no stupid @$$ stipulations, right. Hey, he should be a little scared. And Pacquiao is proving he's one of the best fighters in his era, in this decade."

MICHAEL IRVIN - "I want Mayweather to stop messing around and making us brothers look bad by running. Okay, listen. Stop running, man. You're making the brothers look bad. Get in the ring, even if you lose, it's an honorable loss."

ATG radio - "Do you really think that we'll ever see Manny Pacquiao/Floyd Mayweather fight?"
GEORGE FOREMAN - "No. Not at all. No, it's not gonna happen. Mayweather had a chance to do that fight years ago, and maybe for good reasons, he didn't want it because there was a chance that , in early when he made up his mind to come back in boxing, Pacquiao would've run over him! Then they got a little even in time, and then Mayweather got pretty smart and understood, hey, why? I'm making all this money without fighting him, why fight him? So now there is definitely no reason to do it."

FLOYD MAYWEATHER JR - "My health is more important than money. They can take all the money, my health is more important."

saying certain shit you would never hear Manny say

And not cause he's better, or because Floyd got zero losses or cause Manny got 'KTFO BROOOO' or any other shit that's irrelevant to the discussion of Manny vs. Floyd

but because to Manny the danger of the losing is a part of fighting, and to Floyd it's out of the question for his brand

The amount of old Black dudes I always hear shitting on Manny for no reason is just ridiculous to me. It's true there are all types of racist white people and mexicans etc that hate Floyd for being the best (I still think he's better than Manny although I like Manny more) while also being belligerent, bold, and Black (how you like that alliteration) and all that shit, but truth of the matter is that there is a realm of complete denial that a lot of these Mayweather dudes live in, where it's just endless deflection and lying.
