"Btw, Jason Kidd is actually a very good coach"

Sorry guys

I've been watching the Nets a lot recently

He's going to be a great, great coach one day

He learned, and now his IQ and charisma are paying off

Stay mad, bros

I think that got him over the hump...Franks as just him getting rid of the insurance policy so they'd have to let him ride it out....but it seems he has won Pierce's confidence and vice versa....that is key.

I get making sure there's an experienced assistant there to help Kidd transition from player to coach. But bringing in a dude that sat in that chair before - even if his ascent was CAUSED by Kidd - is just asking for egos to clash. Frank probably took the job expecting Kidd would fail immediately.

8. "After Franks was fired, Pierce was talking shit about Kidd in the media"
In response to Reply # 6

It started back here:

http://www.slamonline.com/online/nba/2013/11/paul-pierce-critical-of-brooklyn-nets-coaches-for-not-making-adjustments/

Kidd responded here with this:

http://www.nashfm1025.com/common/more.php?m=58&ts=1387896215&article=2F4CBC6F6CCA11E3B51EFEFDADE6840A&mode=2

and I think part of it was directed towards Pierce. Garnett has been doing his thing all season, but Pierce had been dragging, and when the Frank firing went down, Pierce sounded like he was Team Lawrence. That was when Kidd said that 'This is my mf'ing team' line.

After that, I think they chopped it up, because Pierce has been solid since...and it wasn't just him shaking off injuries.

After that rousing ovation they gave him in Boston he came back and played the best game of his short Brooklyn career. Vintage Truth.

And you know what, that's the hypest I've ever seen Barclays (admittedly the crowd can be lukewarm to actually contentious with the players and Kidd). Even though D WIll and the gang shit the bed, it was good seeing the crowd on the team's side 100% again

was just abysmal... most of the blame to DWill still for making the dumb pass, but wasting his last time-out, not having a better play, that was his worst moment since his bad start...

Still, he's done a great job rotation wise, and getting the team to be a way better passing team... has a bright future for sure, but gonna be a rocky rookie season

not to mention spill gate (by the way where is Tyshawn Taylor now). the veteran players were visibly frustrated (at least piru)

Ball movement is so vastly improved, and players are playing unselfishly, and I credit that a lot to Kidd.

We'll see tonight whether Kidd can outcoach Scottie because the Nets are going to have to play fantastically to stop KD

and is kinda smallish so only able to play SG while not really having played enough PG to do so at an NBA level without experience and more minutes, if he gets some time to develop in the D-League he's got a shot to get back in the league as he's only 23 but this isn't exactly his teammate Thomas Robinson being a Top 5 pick & completely busting now on his third team on his way out of the league.

He's a Bob Hurley product, he'll keep working at it until it doesn't make sense to anymore.

Sidenote: I had no idea Maine had a D-League team let alone that they're called the Red Claws. The logo's kinda dope too. Since my little sister just moved to Portland so I will be taking my little nephews to a game when I visit.

He said he's glad the ownership gave him time to grow instead of being reactionary. He said Kidd is turning into a very good coach, he just needed to get his feet wet.

He pointed to the firing of Frank as what has allowed Kidd to grow. SVG had a feeling Frank was sabotaging Kidd on the low.

I'm stunned at how well he's doing though, especially after such a rough start

The easy part (IMO) was Kidd motivating the team. He DEFINITELY can do that without question
What stuns me is his adjustments mid-game, as well as his rotation adjustments. Not only (at least in Jan.) is he drawing up the right plays, but he's making the right rotation subs to counter the opposing team. I thought THAT would take at least a year or 2 for him to figure out. He's also helped Shaun Livingston become a legit 6MOY candidate (it's Lance's to lose, but still, Livingston has been playing VERY well off the bench when most of the league thought he was done)

So far so good, but I'll still hold my judgement on him. He's definitely improved since canning Lawrence Frank (who I was amazed as to why he keeps getting chances in the league)

http://grantland.com/features/a-team-grows-in-brooklyn/

some of the pertinent excerpts (the whole thing's worth a read) --

The Nets have improbably righted themselves. Theyre 11-4 since the New Year behind weirdo small-ish lineups that have transformed an awful defensive team into a long-armed, turnover-generating machine. It required injuries, luck, and a midseason readjustment of the teams core defensive principles, but the Nets appear to have stumbled upon that ephemeral thing every team seeks: an identity.

Weve found our personality, says Nets GM Billy King.

You have to have a sense of structure and an identity, says Jason Kidd, the teams coach. You have to know who you are, and how youre going to play both ends. And now we do.

...

The Nets are not winning because Lopez is gone, but they are playing a style hed be hard to fit into. Kidd has downsized, shifting Pierce to power forward and Garnett to center in hybrid lineups that are small up front and huge on the perimeter. The weirdness continues when Kidd goes to the bench with the positionally funky Andrei KirilenkoMirza TeletovicAndray Blatche trio.

Teams have just had no idea how to handle these offbeat looks. Bigger power forwards struggle to chase Pierce around the perimeter, and some opponents have had a wing player guard Pierce while stashing the extra big on the nonthreatening Alan Anderson. But hiding a big that way becomes much harder if Deron Williams permanently replaces Anderson in the starting lineup. As for the bench, Kirilenko and Teletovic are both tweeners, but they have wildly different skill sets, and opponents often prefer to defend them with different players than Kirilenko and Teletovic guard on the other end. Kirilenko adds doses of speed and crazy that the slowpoke Nets sorely need, and he allows Brooklyn to let Teletovic launch on offense without worrying too much about the other end. Teletovic is jacking nine 3s per 36 minutes, a launch frequency only four players have matched over a full season. The Nets, basically, are dictating matchup confusion.

Kirilenkos return to health has been essential to all of this. He can defend speedier wing players so that Teletovic doesnt have to, and he allows for the demotion of both Anderson and Jason Terry a rejiggering that lets Kidd experiment with absolutely giant lineups featuring Pierce or Joe Johnson at shooting guard.

...

Ironically, Lopez figured into the reconstruction of the Nets defense, a slow and painful process that began after Sacramento blew them out in mid-November, Kidd says. The coaching staff decided after that game that they wanted to defend more aggressively. That meant two major things:

1. Kidd wanted his big men to step farther out in containing pick-and-rolls.

http://espngrantland.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/nets1.png
http://espngrantland.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/nets2.png

This is somewhere between a hard trap and a softer defense in which the big man drops back near the foul line, a style the Nets had been playing earlier in the season. The Nets call this up to touch, meaning the big man should be able to touch the screener at the start of the play, Kidd says. Lopez, a plodding dude, would seem an ill fit for this kind of style, but when the coaches used film to demonstrate the proper technique to the team, they used film of Lopez executing it. Brook can do this, Kidd says. He was doing it.

Garnett has looked more spry over the last month.

Blatche tries, but hes never going to be a good defender; that said, he has been playing better since missing four games due to personal reasons.

The other players are so close in size that they can switch on almost any pick.

...

2. The rest of the defenders have taken a step closer to the middle of the floor, walling off the paint and generally scrunching things up.

http://espngrantland.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/nets3.png
http://espngrantland.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/nets4.png

Its about starting off in the right spot, Kidd says, and pulling the help defenders in on the weak side.

The goal is to close off the first option and force teams to swing the ball around the perimeter in search of something else. Its also a way the Nets can help Pierce deal with tough post-up bigs by having help defenders ready, in the paint, right behind him. Sending all five defenders toward the ball like this carries a risk: Great passing teams stocked with shooters can draw the Nets in, and then fling the ball around fast enough to beat the defense before it can recover out. The Nets are betting they can win more of those possession-by-possession battles than they lose, and they have been right over the last month.

Brooklyn is 10th in points allowed per possession since January 1, a massive jump for a team that ranked 29th up to that point, per NBA.com. They have forced turnovers on 18.6 percent of opponent possessions since January 1, tops in the league, and a number that would have led all defenses last season. About 12 percent of opponent possessions have ended via isolation plays, per Synergy Sports, a share that would easily be the leagues highest over the full season. That suggests the Nets have been successful in denying the first option, leaving teams to improvise one-on-one as the shot clock ticks down.

The Nets arent the fastest or most athletic group, but they are long, and this system is a way to leverage that length. Shaun Livingston and Joe Johnson are long for their positions, and Livingston especially has been able to sink into the paint as a helper, dart out when the offense kicks the ball back to his side of the floor, and swipe those cross-court passes opponents wrongly think are safe.

Johnson has gotten some steals this way and has generally been steady as a defender. Blatches hands are quick enough to pick a point guards pocket or reach into passing lanes at the right times. Kidd has allowed for some selective gambling, and the team as a whole has just been in tune with this scheme. They are on a string, covering for each other in sync as the ball and help assignments shift around the floor, and they have a very good sense of personnel which shooters demand a bit more attention away from the ball, and which can be ignored more blatantly. Our length is big for us, Kidd says. And we have guys with very high basketball IQs.

Veteran coaches probably would have fared worse because
they are set in their ways

The whole Nets team is an experiment, and I can' think of
a better player to instantly become coach than Jason Kidd

Woodson would mumble a couple of nonsense on the sidelines, but when the Knicks players got on the court, Kidd was actually the one coaching.

http://nypost.com/2014/06/28/denied-promotion-jason-kidd-gets-ok-to-talk-with-bucks/

Apparently Jason Kidd isnt satisfied with just coaching, but hell have to be if he stays with the Nets.
According to a league source, Kidd recently approached ownership with a series of demands, including the role of overseeing the Nets basketball operations department in addition to his head coaching responsibilities. The source said Kidd didnt want general manager Billy King to be dismissed, but wanted to be given a title and placed above him in the organizational hierarchy.
Ownership declined to grant Kidd that kind of power, which is rare for any coach in the league to have. The source said ownership felt Kidd wasnt ready for that kind of responsibility after having only one year of coaching experience the team finished his first season on the bench with a 44-38 record, good for sixth in the Eastern Conference and allowed Kidd to seek other opportunities.
The franchise then was approached by the Bucks to speak with Kidd about the prospect of hiring him, and have done so with the Nets permission.
Bucks coach Larry Drew just completed his first season in Milwaukee after the team hired him last summer following his contract expiring with Atlanta.
Kidd did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The Bucks, long one of the leagues moribund franchises, has been injected with new life after the sale of the team from its longtime owner, Sen. Herb Kohl, for $550 million to New York investment firm executives Wes Edens and Marc Lasry, who is a good friend of Kidd, in mid-May.
Milwaukee selected Duke star Jabari Parker with the second overall pick in Thursdays draft at, ironically, Barclays Center in Brooklyn, pairing him with rookie Giannis Antetokounmpo to give them two exciting young forwards to build around.

Kidd huddles with his team during a November loss to the Rockets. The Nets started Kidds first season as head coach with a 10-21 record before an about-face around the New Year that brought them all the way to the conference semi-finals.
Photo: NBAE via Getty Images
Holding the dual roles of both coaching a team and overseeing basketball operations is rare in the NBA, with only San Antonios Gregg Popovich, Detroits Stan Van Gundy, Minnesotas Flip Saunders and the Clippers Doc Rivers currently holding both roles. Van Gundy and Saunders assumed their roles this offseason.
The Nets hired Kidd last June less than a month after he retired from a stellar 19-year Hall of Fame career in which he spent six-plus seasons with the franchise, leading them to a pair of Finals appearances and establishing himself as the best player in the franchises NBA history.
Kidd endured a rocky start, including a 10-21 record through the opening two months of the season and the re-assignment to filing daily reports of assistant coach Lawrence Frank who had signed a six-year contract worth roughly $1 million on average last summer after being pursued by his former point guard with the Nets. Kidd turned things around after the start of 2014, leading Brooklyn to a 34-17 record from Jan. 1 through the end of the regular season.
The decision to swap out Shaun Livingston for Alan Anderson in Games 6 and 7 was a deciding factor in the Nets comeback from a 3-2 deficit to advance to the Eastern Conference semifinals, where they eventually lost to the Heat in five games.
Kidd was on hand at the unveiling of the site of the teams new practice facility in Brooklyn on Thursday, and spoke at length about the state of the franchise. He expressed a desire for the franchise to re-sign free agents Paul Pierce, Shaun Livingston, Alan Anderson and Andray Blatche.
He also said he would be with the team this week in Orlando, where the Nets Summer League team will begin practicing ahead of its first game Saturday morning. Unlike last summer, however, when Kidd coached several games, he said assistant coach Sean Sweeney would run the team.

He would seem to be a better pick since he worked with a young team in the past. And Larry Sanders could use some religion, it seems.

Meanwhile, John Hammond and Larry Drew are huddling by the courtesy phone wondering if they missed a call or something.

Goodness, Kidds been doing this since his freshman year at Cal, when he led a mutiny that wound up costing Lou Campanelli his job with 10 games left in the season.
And never were his Machiavellian methods more on display then the evening of Dec. 5, 2007, when, unhappy with the Nets unwillingness to trade him or extend his contract, he conducted a one-man job action, calling in sick and missing a game against the Knicks at the Meadowlands when the only thing wrong with him was a sour attitude.
Kidd was a genius player, and none of his clubhouse-lawyering and coach-killing will ever change that. But his off-court conniving is every bit as much a part of who he is, who he always has been, as his on-court brilliance. The Nets, of all teams, knew that as well as anybody, and hired him anyway last summer.
And then, in case anyone forgot, he chased a reluctant Lawrence Frank for weeks to be his top aide, demanded that the Nets make him the top-paid assistant in the leaguethen exiled him about 15 minutes into the season.

Just saying it's insane totally unproven coaches are making more than Carlisle, Spoelstra, Tibs, Monty, etc. I mean, Magic was a proven winner and leader too - granted, he didn't coach long - and as we saw from Kidd, kinks always need to get worked out - I'm just saying it doesn't necessarily translate to a great coaching career.

He wasn't even crafting plays for his team on the sidelines
Who knows how much of the x an o stuff he was even doing
On top of That nets roster is only going downhill unless they make a major move somehow while being in cap hell with limited picks
He might as well bounce for a better position

I think that's more doable than Coach and Pres. for him.... either way he needs more seasoning

at first I thought he was crazy to demand to be president from the Nets..considering he wasn't that great as a first year coach last year.... but I think maybe the front office seems to work better for some guys..there are some solid former players who are running teams now...and Milawakee would be less pressure than the Nets..

but it's not the best look for him to kind of jump ship after only one year...

In what universe?

If he wanted more money and more control, he should have asked for it last year.

This seems like a lateral move even with the bumps he is getting, though it is a little tough to say because Milwaukee just got new ownership.

the Bucks position isn't for President of Basketball Operations, but strictly for the Head Coaching gig, which I'm guessing means Kidd did this strictly for more money.

Madness.

it's that he's wanting to jump to a new job after just getting grounded in the one he has. and for all you want to prop him up, what he did with the nets last season was essentially the same as what avery and p.j. did in their disaster season. i think avery would have done better, but that's probably an aaron brooks/jake plummer debate.

nobody gives a shit if Kidd wants to be president of the United States... he tried to get King fired (a black gm) and since it did not work he did broke the cardinal rule of coaches, gunning for another coaches job who is still in that position (a black coach by the way) in Larry Drew...

If you wanna blame cism in all this, blame the white half of Jason Kidd

1.) He's a competitive person. He sees D-Fish and Kerr getting paid with the same experience and not nearly as great of a basketball background and he wants his.

2.) Of course it's a bold move. He's a bold person. And he knows to get what he wants he as to act on that shit. If it was somebody else, people might applaud him for "having balls" or whatever white people say to condone a power move.

3.) He's fucking Jason Kidd. Of course this is how he's gonna handle it. He's had a lot of turnovers in his career, because of moves like this. High risk, but also high reward.

4.) Fuck it, I wore #5 cuz I wanted to play just like that dude when I was a kid. So it is what it is. I fucks with Jason.

Larry Bird had to explain nothing to anyone. He had
any job he wanted, whenever he wanted. If he ever made
big demands it was never a story because nobody questioned
it or cared to make a fuss about it.

And Kidd's accomplishments are closer to Bird's than
they are to Kerr's.

In fact, Kidd probably did more with less than Bird,
was more of an IQ player than Bird. Nobody will admit
that, again, because Jason Kidd is black and Larry Bird
is white.

A. Kidd got jealous because Kerr and Fisher got more years and more $ than him
B. Dude went over Billy King's head to try to get his job
C. Dude went to his connect to take another person's job

Now, I didn't like the fact that Kerr was the hot name in coaching, and replaced a proven coach in MJax. I also can't be mad that Kidd used his connect to get him what he wanted, because essentially that's what Kerr AND Fisher did

But it seems mad shady that he tried to usurp Billy King, AND pushed Larry Drew off the sidelines. That's just grimy to me

But if that's what Milwaukee wants...they'll have to give him AT LEAST more than Fisher/Kerr

Remember the "...not in my locker room..." comments concerning
Jason Collins? yeah that Jason Collins, the first openly gay
NBA player to suit up and get run? for what team? Yeah, BK.

If I'm able to piece that together, some dick head journalist
looking for the most clicks on the internet that day is DEF
writing that article... then questions are being asked, bla bla bla.

He's riding in the RV with Breen and JVG for at least another season.
What's up with LA? They aren't interested in Jackson?
He got a raw deal in GS, mostly for his "...not in my locker room..."
comments, imo.

I think take him off the list... similarities meaning how a straight from player to head coach who reportedly clashed with management about wanting more say...

I really hope they work something out with Jackson though... would love to hire him and let him grow with the job for 10 years

I think it may have more to do with Jackson being a staunch supporter of Kidd and also Jackson similarly butting heads with team management in GS.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Prokhorov bring over his boy Ettore Messina

Two things in his favor. Really I think the Nets made a lateral move if not an upgrade here if this is what they wind up with.

LOL @ thinking the Nyets are making some decision based on Jason "15 seconds per game" Collins. What? Or, reading it again, maybe you think that mainly ousted him in GS. Well, first off, that would be understandable because it is the Bay, but they usually just boo guys (e.g. Garrison Hearst) and get on with life. I would say his staff disintegrating midseason and his being a total dickhead at every turn had a lot more to do with it than some Ozzie Guillen-esque dipshit comments.

Which would make sense as to how you are able to afford seeing so many movies as I've seen you offer reviews for the majority of movies that drop. I'm guessing the cost of living down south is fairly cheap, which would result in cheap movie tickets, but enough about that.

If I'm right in assuming prices for movies tickets in the metro area for California are pretty expensive, how is it that seeing the majority of movies that come out doesn't hurt your pockets too hard?

Don't love how they conduct their business, but you pay 40-45 a month and get to see every movie in theaters once. That helps a lot.

And if you think three night-time movies per month in LA, that's already more than the 45 bucks per month you pay for membership. Considering I see over 100 movies every year, no-brainer.

Of course, I have some serious beefs with their business, and I'm ultimately waiting for the day that they run themselves into the ground, lol. BUT until then, I'm hoping they can save me enough on my usual movie expenditure that I can sustain until I'm wealthy enough to no longer give a shit about saving on my movie budget.

And if I need to see a movie IMAX, I can always just keep an eye out for a matinee that isn't sold out, buy a ticket to a different movie with MoviePass, then sneak into the IMAX. Win win.

Her waited until the 4th to employ his defence tactics (didn't show his hand) and completely shut down the Raps when it mattered most. If the Bucks hit their free throws they would've won. I think they missed 10 in the 4th quarter alone.

They took the Raptors to basically the brink with a team that's barely old enough to drink.

He had the balls to make overpaid Greg Monroe a 6th-7th man and it actually fucking WORKED.

He made Giannis into a near lock for a future MVP.

He repeatedly shut down one of the best scorers in the NBA.

He took this team from 15 wins a few years ago to a 42 win team now - which is a nice seed in the east, and he's done it pretty consistently (41, 33, 42 wins in his tenure....this is before Giannis turns into one of the best players in the NBA and largely without Jabari)

This is a stupid ass take.

Again you are not defending Kidd on merit, just deflecting. Thibs has his team humming so Minnesota did the right thing. We'll see where the Bucks end up. I hope they hire Fizdale. I do think Prunty will be the guy the rest of the year.

This is a PR nightmare.

They alienated their franchise player and are brazenly
and aggressively racist against one of the smartest
basketball players to ever exist, who happens to also
be highly intelligent coach.

to want to purchase and read this book, but I am curious if the book covers Kidd in a nuanced light at all or if it just completely paints him in this negative overtly abusive light.

I wonder if Giannis and Kidd are going to be asked questions about these anecdotes when the season rolls around.

Given the near quarter of a billion dollar contract extension that Doncic just signed, this kind of stuff will be a distant memory I'd have to imagine when Kidd does get on that Mavericks sideline.

this team did everything that dude said and they were still sorry

once he was gone they won 60 games

pretty simple math there given Jason Kidd is a career .491 head coach.

which...wow. i didnt realize his record was so bad. makes all this shit extra hilarious.

who?

You mean by developing a 15th pick into a 2-time MVP that just won Finals MVP?

Jason Kidd is one of the best basketball players and leaders I’ve ever seen.

Jason Kidd did not create these coaching methods.

These are probably the same methods he personally attributes to his own success.

I guess it’s easy to say times have changed and you can’t coach players like that.

But if they won, it wouldn’t have been an issue.

I have zero problems with it.

So...since they didn't win...is it an issue?
His successor did win...and I'm confident Bud's approach is different...is it an issue?

Sure, this may have been effective...back in the day...but this wasn't back in the day...and it didn't work.

So are you really saying Bud would've won a championship with the teams Kidd had?

Are you saying Kidd had no role in the early development of people like Giannis and Middleton? the 2 most important players on Bud's successful teams?

And it’s a different set of players at different parts in their career,

And also let’s not pretend like Bud wasn’t close to losing his job.

And let’s also not pretend the Bucks won a title because everybody in the universe was injured.

sure Kidd maybe had some issues and he's probably grown and learned from that like most coaches do.

Belichick wasn't a genius first time out in Cleveland.

Its still funny to me how people like to dig up shit when black coaches get jobs and ignore stuff that current white coaches and owners do.

The "this is how it's always been done, just look at the results" argument is always flawed when the methods in question are problematic.

Great leadership isn't just about the material end result.

If you have to treat people like shit to get them produce, you're definitively not a great, or even good, leader.

People will find all manner of justification for abuse, none more so than "results", as though there exists no better path to said results.

Went there for work like 1-2x a year. Never much of a line. It wasn't AS good as Franklin's, but it was close enough - plus factoring in time, it was always my first move whenever I landed.

Then Joe Rogan fucking talked about it.

Broke my heart.

I kinda liked them the most when they went small and used Dorian Finney-Smith at the 5, but DFS just isn't *that* guy. And Jalen Brunson, while awesome, just can't be your second option if you're trying to make the Finals-- he'd be a terrific third option.

I'd imagine they're one of the teams who will strongly consider giving DeAndre Ayton a max deal to see if Dallas would match.

Their cap situation is pretty gross for next year.

Luka starts his extension at 36.6 mil
THJ is getting paid 19.6 mil
Dinwiddie is getting 18 mil - I think dogecoin still counts against the cap
Bertans is getting 16 mil
Dwight Powell is getting 11 mil
DFS is getting 12.4 mil
Bullock at 10 mil

It's not great.
