"Poll question: The TMZ'ing of sports (Wade, Foster etc..)"

So obviously I hate to see how this is unfolding
w/ Arian Foster given my personal relationship
w/ him - and the insight I have that these media
simps (TMZ, BlackSportsOnline etc..) don't, but
is it a desirable element of our culture to be
hawking into people's personal lives in this
type of manner to the point where conclusions
are drawn, judgments are made, and courts of
public opinion are adjudicated before people
even know the facts?

Of course the society has been accustomed to
this from movie-stars for decades, but how do you
feel about sports entering the pantheon of tabloid
news on a regular basis now?

Poll result (13 votes)
sh!t's disgusting (4 votes)Vote
it's fair (7 votes)Vote
I'm entertained. (2 votes)Vote

They went into a field that includes a harsh spotlight but, in return, they get paid millions.

However, it is still disgusting that people get so much entertainment out of their failings, as if they weren't real people and their lives were a soap opera.

Then again, I make my living in reality TV so I guess I shouldn't complain about people loving to watch the failings of other people.

I will say that for a legit news organization, it's seems unprofessional but, I mean, this is the shit you have to put up with as a celebrity. There's a level of privacy that you lose. And, to be harsh, if you don't want this, don't go cheat on your wife. This is one of the consequences of that sort of action when you're in the public eye.

Also, Arian did EXACTLY what they were hoping for. Vultures like that reporter want to be engaged. It's why paparazzis are often assholes because you're better with Alec Baldwin flipping out at you than just random shot of him walking to his car.

Sometimes I indulge it on this board but really don't do it offline.
It ads fuel to agendas here. Like I said it ain't nothing new. Where were you when kobe was in the news or James harden or A rod? This shit goes back to LT in the 80:, Rodman. I mean I get it- it's athletes you like now, and those types of sites have been getting more popular-- but celebrity breeds the paparazzi no matter which field.

nah you don't get my point - I'm not even a D. Wade fan at all - think he's one of the most overrated stars in the game, but I don't condone the public adjudication and condemnation and the peering into
people's personal lives in this manner, regardless of whether it's a person in the public sphere or not.

it's always been around for high-profile celebrities, but
it wasn't always as prevalent within the culture as it is now.

But if you want to argue that newspapers from the 60's were just
as salacious as the present TMZ model of instamedia, good luck w/ that.

what exactly do you see as new?

when you say "prevalent" are you talking purely cultural saturation (from an instantly available perspective)?

you are the one making the assertion, why would the onus be on me to explain away the validity of it? (especially when a web-search of "history of sensationalist sports reporting" would give a pretty healthy bunch of reputable references)

one thing I would say is that there is less of need to be protective of the famous. once upon a time (not too long ago) those in power didn't want you messing with the image of their moneymakers so they had machines to protect them.

that doesn't exist as much today because people knowing about "dirt" doesn't have such a negative affect - in fact, i'd say folks today crave it. scan the posts on this very board, the majority of the stuff here isn't analyzing contests as much as analysis of the people and their actions/motivations (read: they stuff we get from those who scratch beyond the surface of Xs and Os)

we embrace instant stuff like social media because it us "us" a peek into what life is like for them (humanizing them a bit).

its cool to feed the beast right up until its hunger causes it to bite you. foster, as an example, is feeding the beast when he runs out and talks to the cameras. he didn't HAVE to say anything.

"no comment" lets you keep a certain amount of dignity - or at least lets the shark know you aren't going to just FEED them freely

There is so much more information and ability to gather knowledge (whether it's true or not) that naturally the 'TMZ' scope and net is going to be cast wider in order to attract as many viewers/readers (and hence dollars) as possible.

This shit has been happening for years though, particularly on OKP...a prime example is Kobe. It's just easier to find now.

actors and musicians, but in this day and age they aren't. Especially if they on social networks, trying to get their brand out and stuff like that. You want the attention when its beneficial then you gotta expect the attention when its something you'd want hidden too.

I really have no sympathy but I usually ain't interested in all the personal bs.

I had to google to figure out the arian foster business.

is that the whole story?

if so, i'm missing the big deal and don't understand why he's getting sued.

Judge orders Arian Foster, alleged ex-mistress to leave each other alone

by Jeremy Rogalski / KHOU 11 News & Tim Wetzel / KHOU 11 News

HOUSTON -- A judge has ordered Houston Texans Arian Foster and the woman who is allegedly pregnant with his child to comply with a mutual injunction to stay away from each other until their legal matter is done.

Brittany Norwood’s attorneys filed for a temporary restraining order against the married running back claiming he and his brother have been pressuring her to get an abortion. A hearing on the matter was set for Wednesday morning, but Harris County Family Court Judge James Lombardino called in attorneys for both sides Tuesday. He ruled that neither side can harass the other while the case plays out in court.

Foster's attorney filed a motion asking the judge for a gag order. He claims Norwood was planning to produce a reality show about being pregnant with the NFL star's baby. The judge denied the attorney's request.

Norwood, a 20-year-old University of Houston senior, claims she didn’t know Foster was married with children when she had sex with him last summer. She said they were first intimate at Hotel ZaZa where Foster was staying during training camp.

Norwood said they also spent a week together in California in November while Foster was recovering from back surgery. Norwood sold photos of them together in California to TMZ.

"I truly fell in love with this person," Norwood said.

Foster has not commented about Norwood’s claims, but he has spoken publicly about his marriage and posted photos of his daughter on social media.

Norwood said everything changed when she told Foster she was pregnant and wanted to keep the baby.

"He’s like, ‘You can’t have this, you can’t have this kid, like, we cannot bring a child into this, like, think about my kids,’" Norwood said.

She said Foster began sending text messages urging her to end the pregnancy.

"You just can’t bring a life into this world under these circumstances. It’s not fair to anyone. It’s not just about you," read one message, according to Norwood.

She said Foster’s brother, Abdul, also sent messages.

"He’s like, ‘You know, if you loved Arian at all you would have an abortion because this child is going to ruin everything,’" Norwood said. "’Like, our whole family will never accept this child.’"

Norwood said the baby is a boy and he’s due in June. She said Foster hasn’t helped with her medical bills.

"I’m 20, I’m scared, I’m another single mom," she said through tears.

The temporary restraining order filed against Foster claimed he recklessly engaged in a pattern of outrageous conduct that caused Norwood to "suffer severe emotional distress."

"We want his conduct to stop," said attorney Douglas York. "We want him to communicate effectively and we want the harassment to end."

They are also asking the court to force Foster to submit to DNA tests to prove he is the father.

According to court documents, the couple will be back in front of a judge on Feb. 24.

because they are celebrities - that means
that all of their intimate details and personal
lives are there to be exposed by the media -
and it's fair game because "that's the way it is?"

that guy?

Of course DWade had to expect some extra media coverage when he decided to enter into a relationship with Gabrielle Union

but I really didn't know about the Arian Foster thing until this post

he's been very present in the media since his peak years in HOU

why wouldn't any of this extra non-sense not make it into the news

I think some atheletes see the Primetime strategy, talk loud, play louder = $$$

you have to expect the same machine you use to gain profile

to also be there when you fall

what's unfair about that?

if anything we need more legit investigations into the finances and actual health costs of sports, not the personal life drama of athletes who aren't really even celebrities.

But let's examine a few parts here:

- He starts banging a groupie while at training camp

- She may or may not have in truth known he was married, but she DAMN sure knew who the hell HE was

- To be so smart, the nigga can't utilize non-animal product based conderms? And to keep letting people take pictures of you with this broad?

- She ain't just a "single mom" she's a chick who wasn't ABOUT to lose her meal ticket. At some point she had to have discovered he was married, or didn't care to know at some point.

I say all this because you have two irresponsible folk who are setting an unborn child up for some drama in his early years and serious self-esteem issues down the road. It is unfortunate that the kid will be able to find articles talking about his father pressuring his mother to abort him. THAT aspect of the 24-7 news/information cycle is a bit much.

However, celebrities have relished putting themselves out there and managing their image a certain way. Thus, they are fair game when their actions belie the images that they tried to create. With the rapidity of twitter/smartphones/facebook, the common person who's NOT affiliated with a news source can get information out there, and there's no turning back. The thing celebrities have themselves to blame for is not using more discretion. Their money and access at least allow them to put up more barriers than the average person. Their often cavalier and reckless approach is what allows information like this to ever get out.

I will say that the best thing about it is that cover-ups can rarely take place as they did in yesteryear. Imagine that we had the same media speed when JFK was killed. We'd actually have known what the hell really happened that day.

because you are just echo'ing what the instamedia
news sources are reporting. That said, are *you*
personally comfortable with drawing the conclusions
you have drawn, based on the information sources
that gave you that info?

To me, one of the biggest issues of this era
of news consumption and social media commentary
is that people are outright judging people's
entire character based on hearsay, or a half-side
of a story, or a hyperbolic TMZ report designed
to shock and draw as many views as possible.

Notice in this post, and in much of the social
media sphere - people are speaking as if they know
Foster, saying 'ah i knew it! he's just a pseudo
philosopher who thinks he knows it all. This proves it!'

Does what we know (which is very little)
about the situation really prove anything?

i honestly just googled a clip and saw that story

i don't THINK you're referring to me, but i definitely wasn't judging his entire character. i was however, evaluating his decision making.

>Notice in this post, and in much of the social

>Foster, saying 'ah i knew it! he's just a pseudo

but that happens on everything on here man. the line on how we "know" someone factoring in our commentary on them has long since been blurred.

>Does what we know (which is very little)
>about the situation really prove anything?
i would say the case that is filed is more insightful then cameras chasing down people.

btw, i didn't click on the links that people are commenting on about cameras getting up in dude's face. that is and always will be inappropriate.

i don't have a "judgment" on Foster or the woman's character, so we can throw a "IF THIS IS TRUE" on all of it. I honestly am too focused on what I need to do for my life to concern myself deeply with the problems/situations of others. that's what this MAINLY boils down to. if people spent more time focusing on their lives, the hawks would have less of a market to service.

How the fuck is walking up to someone's HOUSE when
they are with their family fair?

Get the entire fuck out of here.

Its evil.

This generation will HAVE to RE-ENGAGE the issue of
PRIVACY in ALL ITS FORMS. Its actually fucking important
that I FEEL COMFORTABLE to live in my own space, WITHOUT
THE EYE OF OTHERS

When people can WALK UP ON YOU and WITHOUT YOUR CONSENT,
FUCK WITH YOUR PERSONAL LIFE....JUST TO MAKE MONEY, that is
WRONG

Your PRIVATE SPACE should not be a COMMODITY

And LMO @ all of you Professor Xaviers who know for a fact
that every athlete wants as much fame as humanly possible

(No, they don't)

And even if that WAS TRUE, that does not JUSTIFY BLATANT
