"White Thursday submission: Danny Ainge is a fucking genius "

I'll start by just listing his his positive work from 2007 to now

-Took a disappointing lottery spot (5th pick, Jeff Green) and turned it into Ray Allen, which prompted KG to waive his no trade clause.

-Filled a 2007 Celtics roster who at the time only had 7 or 8 players with vets who ALL contributed to the title run that season (Eddie House, James Posey, PJ Brown)

This team won 1 ship, 2 finals appearances, 3 conference finals appearances, and scared the shit out of Miami in a 6 year run. I'm satisfied.

Fast forward to now:

1. He got rid of an old (slightly overrated) coach in Doc Rivers that would have been disgruntled with a rebuild...got a fucking FIRST round pick in his departure (Unprecedented to get a first round pick in exchange for a coach) and hired a fantastic coach in Brad Stevens. He gave him a six year contract which gives Stevens the freedom and flexibility to develop his NBA coaching craft with no pressure of contract, or expectations. By them time the celtics build a contending team, Brad Stevens would have already nurtured his culture and brand in Boston, and should be ready to coach a winning team if he is indeed going to be a great coach...which I think it is obvious that he is if you watch how this team competes on a nightly.

2. Safe to say the trade with Brooklyn was a fucking HEIST. We got their 2014, 2016, and 2018 first round picks, AND the option to swap 2017 picks if we want. I was holding out hope that Brooklyn would be delivering us a lottery pick by 2016 and they suck ass this season lol. Atlanta has the option to swap first round picks with us in 2014 because of a deal they made with Brooklyn..but it's Atlanta. They will implode. It will be a lottery pick.

In short, Danny Ainge turned a old, potentially disgruntled coach into a young guru and a 2015 first round pick.

Three old greats (well..two) who no longer can carry a team and turned them into 3-4 first round picks...at least two of those are sure to be lottery picks.

The Celtics will have max money Summer of 2015 (Klay Thompson, Kevin Love, Lamarcus Aldridge, Brook Lopez, Nikola Vucevic, Enes Kanter, Andre Drummond)

So in at the conclusion of the summer of '15, the Celtics could potentially have:

Rondo
Avery Bradley
Jeff Green
Sully*
Olynyk
2014 lottery pick
2014 lottery pick
2015 max contract player

http://i586.photobucket.com/albums/ss305/lylettu/that-boy-s-good-o.gif

*Sully put up 19 and 17 on the spurs..and he comfortably shooting the three now...hope yall not trying to ignore him.

Danny Ainge, the real white jesus

So I hope he can do it.

Unlike 90% of the people in Boston, I am going to stick with this team until they get good again.

I have told most of my friends that have been saying to blow it up for the past 5 years that I will let them know when its time to watch again. It is easy to say blow them up when you only watch when they are good.

He is a good manager of players, but he is not a great coach.

If you watch them every game that he coached here you would see it. For all the credit he got for his plays out of TO's, I thought he was horrible. Get the ball to PP who holds it at the top of the key and then rushes to take a bad shot - happened for years.

Most of the plays that he got credit for were broken from his drawn up play.

his units in orlando got worse every single year (9th, 10th, 16th, 20th) and his first 3 yrs in boston were pretty pedestrian too (14th, 20th, 16th)

then in '07 the team hires thibodeau -- who'd worked for van gundy the previous 4 seasons in houston, shepherding top 5 Ds each yr, and who went on to direct top 5 units every season in chicago -- and trades for garnett -- the best P&R defender in league history, playing in an era where pretty much every team starts 9 out of 10 halfcourt possessions w/ a P&R -- and all of a sudden they've got the #1 ranked defense in the league and doc is a genius on that end?

nah, i don't buy it, necesita ms gente.

one of the main subplots i'm paying particular attn to this season is the clipps D. that roster could put up a top 5 offense sleepwalking but they'll need at minimum to get to "respectable" on defense before they'll be a real contender. over the last 15 yrs, w/ a handful of exceptions, top 5 offensive teams that make the conf finals are generally also in the top half defensively, and the "serious" contenders are typically top 10. elite O + bottom third D is not gonna get it done. that's perennial first round fodder.

doc ain't gotta make em great. but he's gotta at least get them to "not terrible" and so far he hasn't (they're currently ranked 28th)

at the end of the day, i guess he's as good as his personnel (to be fair his 2 best defenders by far -- ben wallace and bo outlaw -- were traded in the midst of that orlando run) but can't you say that abt anyone? doesn't make you a defensive guru.

dude's kind of the rick rubin of nba coaches. he adds vibe and spirit and "feel" to the stew, moreso than any profound technical acumen.

>And how is Doc overrated?

But they're currently giving up 105 ppg. 27th in the league.

CP3 is labeled as one of the best defenders at his position. I disagree with this, but most people see steals as the primary indicator of good point guard defense.

No reason for Blake and DeAndre to not be dominating defensively. They're both taller/younger/more athletic than their opposition on most nights.

And they have one of the better defending sf's in the league with Barnes.

They should be better.

What did McGrady net? Francis and Mobley? Downgrade. What did AI net? Andre Miller? LMAO. Shaq got Odom and Caron Butler, neither of whom were as good as Jefferson, and Shaq was much better than KG. Gasol got Marc Gasol, ultimately that turned out better but that is 1000% hindsight. At the time he was considered a peripheral part of the deal. Meanwhile Jefferson was a very young big man with a lot of offensive talent. He has still had a very fine career. I can't believe people are still pushing this bullshit in 2013.

Those were deals made b/c each one of star players basically wanted out & it was clear none of the teams trading their stars would be receiving an equal return when the deal was signed. Everyone & their mama knew about it but their career had run its course & that was the best they could get. Nevertheless it doesn't make it any less of a gift. The beneficiaries did nothing but literally hit the jackpot.

It was clear from the beginning that Big Al was nothing more than an over-sized Antwan Jamison.....Ainge had no regards for his talent which is why he was quick to dangle him out as a trade bait meanwhile dumb ass McHale was supposedly fond of Big Al b/c he's a dumb ass. LMAO at expecting low 1st rd picks from a team that was building towards becoming a contender especially when the KG acquisition was the last piece. Besides, McHale had already gifted one of the picks earlier when he traded Wally for mupuckin Ricky Davis...who the fuck gives up a better player & a 1st rd pick for a lesser player..McHale.

WHAT'S GOOD *****? What's REALLY good?!?!????!!! Ha HA!

Not really, there was no serious contract impasse with any of those guys and while there were some internally created urgencies with Iverson and Shaq, their teams could have afforded to wait, too.

They weren't getting any better deal for KG and you're overstating Al's shortcomings and the clarity thereof. He did go onto make the all-star team and be a 20/10 guy

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

In response to Reply # 0

Dude has balls, he knew before the decision that starpower was the way to go. You can pay for stars or pay for depth. The stars will bring the depth at a discount. He also knew that cap space was overrated, players who hit the open market hit it for a reason. They have some level of defect and you have to pay premium price, more than they earned in their prime.

From the time he was angling to get the AIs and Boozers of the world, I knew Ainge had the right idea.

Big three, I mean, that was obviously a steal but I have to give him credit for it coming together in the very first year and almost again in the second. Both difficult things to accomplish under any circumstances with any players.

The Nyets deal, just go back and look at the posts. I said it was a STONE COLD HOSING then and it's turned out to be even more than that.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

can't speak for anyone else but i've been saying that shit for years.

dude was never any sort of great technical wizard w/ the Xs and Os. his in-game mgmt, substitution patterns, tendency to sit thru oppts runs w/o using timeouts, etc was criticized plenty during his career.

phil's bailiwick was a mastery at manipulating egos, personalities, psyches. getting great talent to coexist and play within defined roles. same as doc.

and i didn't give thibodeau "full credit" for anything. i said doc's defenses were mediocre until he linked up with garnett and thibs, and i backed it up with fact. numbers don't lie. there are things that doc does very well as a coach, and i mentioned them in my previous reply, but if i'm handing out credit for the celtics championship defense, he'd be 3rd on the list behind KG and thibs. sorry if that offends you, dogg.

All this "genius" talk, forgetting the fact that he traded their muscle guy center in the middle of an almost guaranteed deep title run in 2011, for a bag of balls and Jeff fucking Green who's nothing more than a solid role player with occasional flashes of brilliance. He has never known how to handle his only remaining great player in Rondo, and will probably trade him at the worst possible time for near nothing. He will get nothing out of those picks, more than likely. Always battled with Doc, who is a great coach.

I love the Brad Stevens signing but Ainge gets far too much credit for far too little work and resume. He's a blowhard who talks the talk but never walks the walk.

And I am a diehard Boston sports fan. I wish Ainge would leave.

In response to Reply # 57

got "lucky" for KG, got "lucky" for ray allen, "got lucky" for rondo and "got lucky" to dump these worthless assets for first rounders?

dude always said that cap space was overrated, that favorable contracts, picks and picks that could become assets were the key. he outlined his strategy and he executed it.

i dont know how many times it needs to be asked but can someone show me another star who netted a player as good as al jefferson? seriously. gasol is probably the next one down and that is a hindsight thing, people cried about that deal much more than jefferson even. iverson got andre miller, mcgrady got declining francis/mobley, shaq got odom/butler and you could go through these deals all day. only recently (melo, deron, paul) have stars fetched even close to fair value and even that required some unusual circumstances.

ainge doesn't do sexy things for the media to pick up on the way morey or even kupchak does. he just does effective things and i think he is fine with not getting praise for it. how hard was it for auerbach and west to make trades once they won a bunch of them? as a GM, you prefer your profile low.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

yes, they had Big Al a player McHale was drooling over b/c he's a dumb ass

yes, Seattle drafted KD & wanted to draft Jeff Green plus move Ray.....Celtics happened to have a low draft pick & a whole lot of caps space.

I'll give him that but Rhonda ain't done shyt before nor after the big 3

The team that's losing a PROVEN/disgruntled star loses 99.99999999% of the time. Whoever happens to land them has gotten lucky & hit the jackpot. All they have to do is pickup the phone & send some spare parts b/c stars don't grow on trees.

At the moment: RC; Bird; Presti all built via the draft/bargain pickups.......Aigne/Kupchak/Riley & to a certain extent Morey built via unlimited budget. I just wish what the former 3 would do w/ an unlimited budget &/or if they tanked for ping pong balls.

so 2 teams had assets the other one wanted? yeah, that's how trades work.

you mean his rookie season and a season he hasn't played in due to injury?

trades involving stars rarely work out for the team who loses the star, yet only the celts have "gotten lucky" on one of those trades? and jefferson can't be called spare parts, especially in a league w/ barely any big men. not to mention there were two picks in that group. it was up to the wolves what to do with those.

Ainge's asset happened to be a pick via ping pong bal .....it's called #LUCK or #Tanking......None of which require any sort of intelligence to accomplish.

>you mean his rookie season and a season he hasn't played in
>due to injury?
yeah, he didn't do shyt except lead a team to the lotto & gift the Lakers a chip in 2010. I'll take Kyle Lowry or Dragic over Rhonda....two piece that were determined by Morey to be dispensable.

>trades involving stars rarely work out for the team who loses

See the James Harden trade.

>and jefferson can't be called spare parts,

Big Al can't even carry prime KG's jock strap....it's like comparing Antwan Jamison to Bron. Prime KG was TWICE the player Big Al ever was going to end-up being.

> not to mention
>there were two picks in that group. it was up to the wolves

To anyone w/ half a brain those two pick were OBVIOUSLY not going to be anywhere in the teens let alone a lotto. If you're saying Big Al plus two LATE 1st rd picks were anywhere near a fair exchange for prime KG then bwhaaaaaaaaaaahaaaaaaaa.

We got the lowest pick we possible could've in the lotto.

lol, the team that traded him away wasn't tanking. they couldn't have 3 max players.

>Big Al can't even carry prime KG's jock strap....it's like

who's saying Big Al is as good as KG? we're saying that's about the best you can expect in a trade for your star. concretecharlie already outlined that.

>To anyone w/ half a brain those two pick were OBVIOUSLY not

lol, you haven't even done your research. one of the picks was the wolves' we got in a separate trade and we were trading it back to them. it was the 6th pick, and they decided to use it on a PG when they had JUST drafted a PG with the 5th pick. they're dumb, and it's not the celtics job to make them smart.

I know that Memphis wanted another 3 point shooter and Lee is having a career year (even though he can't get consistent minutes) but I have no idea why a team with such limited financial resources would eat that contract. They now have 10 million committed to a declining Tony Allen and Courtney Lee at the 2.

Great trade for the C's.

Crawford and Brooks shipped to Golden State.

Jordan's been good but I'm not sad to see him go. Could be a very nice deal for Golden State if Jordan can accept a bench role. They need a backup guard badly.

EDIT: So we got Joel Anthony and Philly's lotto protected first in 2014/2015 (if we don't get it, it becomes second round picks from Philly).

Meh. Although it's nice to have a big man who can play defense.

essentially, Danny just got rid of a couple guys who he didn't want to go forward with. I understand both cases, but I fell in love with Crawford early.

Joel Anthony should be 3.5 off the books this offseason, but Jordan and Brooks would have been coming off the books anyway.

and there's no way Philly (a team actively tanking) is going to make the playoffs, so much for that first round pick

So we just got some picks for an expiring deal to deal next year at this time.

The East is so bad, I wouldn't be stunned if the Sixers were a playoff team in 2015 and we got the pick. Either way, I'll take that gamble over not re-signing Jordan and Brooks.
