He is the head coach of a team that was LOADED with forwards, played a run and gun game and couldn't score for shit.

Voracek had a better season than Jagr has had since his mullet didn't have a single gray hair in it. They got him, Couts, Schenn and Wayne Simmonds for Carter and Richards. If not for the fact that Lavy lost the team and guys like Schenn and Couts didn't take steps forwards, that would be seen for what it is, a win.

I am so tired of hearing about goaltending. It wasn't great last year but it was adequate. Bryzgalov's departure had less to do with performance and more to do with the salary cap. In these three games, Mason and Emery were adequate.

The thing is that they wanted to and probably should have canned Lavy after last year. He is a fine coach, I will always respect him, but sometimes it's just time for a change. Probably time for some change in their system, too, which is why they shuffled the whole deck.

The timing is kind of bad, but if you were going to do it, go ahead and do it. Yes, the team played two games in 22 hours with travel from Montreal to Raleigh involved. But they looked bad in the first two games and no better in the third.

I remember personally complaining about Savard being canned in favor of Quinneville in Chicago early on. To me that was more of a head scratcher, I thought he was doing a decent job. That worked out pretty well in the end.

I think here this is just a through-the-motions kind of thing. They will middle around, clean up their cap a bit and then make a GM change before the draft.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

on one hand it shows how many quality people come through the organization, on the other hand you just don't see much fresh coming in. lavy was an outsider with a new style, i admit that, but overall you see the same family tree bullshit. on top of that, snider makes these arbitrary and brash decisions so close to each other that it's hard for anyone to really manage this team.

i think the writing is on the wall for hextall to take over the front office. it will be very interesting to see how that goes. i know ron very well, they definitely got a gem as a player development guy and i think everyone remembers his toughness as a goalie.

snider never knew what to do with the sixers, they were just an asset to him. to his credit, he didn't cheap out except for a minor occasion or two. that's about the best thing that could be said about him as an nba owner though.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Surly, unpredictable, and closed minded. Treating the team like a grocery store.

andrew toney and lindros, moses (and almost doc) and carter and richards, etc.

overall he is a way better owner than katz though, he has a long way to fall still. he has also had some weird GMs. holmgren i think has done a good job being able to keep up with his whims, very good asset manager. clarke was different, he made a lot of short-sighted deals but they were always trying to get over the top with them.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

I'm liking Brent Burns still on the wing...

I'm liking Pavelski centering the 3rd line...

I'm liking a lot about this team... much quicker than years past... Still same core with additions like Kennedy and Hertl...

Glad hockey is back... Sharks are off to a great start... I might be at the game tomorrow...

Got New York's attention and is playing in Canada tomorrow.... Media is gonna go crazy... I think at one point today, there were 4 related links on NHL.com's homepage to Hertl and the Sharks...

And yeah, that 4th goal was nasty... I was on the phone and just yelled, "OH SHIT! I gotta call you back!"

the girlfriend was very understanding after seeing the goal... haha

I think it's a combination of baseball still going now when normally it's over for us 3 months ago, and also just the disappointing post seasons for multiple years in a row.

We started 3-0 haven't trailed yet and that's all well and good but it's just like yup this is what we do, look like the best team and then not be it.

That's also an incredibly spoiled position to be in, I think once everything settles down from the Pirates and we get into Winter I'll have more buy in.

He completely went apeshit in his NHL coaching debut, yelling at Boudreaux & the Ducks, and pushing the glass separating the benches.

MacKinnon has been impressive. He might just make 30-goal scorers out of McGinn and Parenteau if he's not centering the second line by midseason.

Varlamov has been steady behind that ugly defense in front of him.

we've got big, strong, fast defensemen for days. Some of our lines are just crazy...so much depth. Petro is in long-term. Tarasenko is fully healthy and aware that he is a target. Derek Roy is a small fellow, but if he can stay healthy, he will be the playmaker we have needed for a while in our offense. We don't have a 40 goal scorer, but I honestly think we have 5 or 6 guys who can score 20 goals. Halak is looking a lot sharper to start the season...which is a positive. And I said it last year every time it happened...there were games when Jordan Shwartz looked like the best player on the ice...this kid is close to being special, I think.

Have any of these guys really been solid playoff performers? I have never been a big fan of Roy, not sure he really gives them an upgrade over McDonald, but he's all right, the kind of player they needed at least. I don't need to see like a huge game breaking forward but some guys that come up with big ones regularly would be nice. Their defense is kind of the same way, loads of depth, very good skaters, can eat minutes, etc, but not much dynamism outside of Petro. Jay Bouwmeester is the epitome of smooth but boring.

I can't exactly put my finger on what it is but I just don't look at them and think "fuck, this is a team I'd want to avoid in the playoffs."

And the reason I think the guy that printed it is a piece of shit is because he was the only one that ran with it... There were at least 20 reporters that heard it and one guy runs it... And because of the publicity that this guy and the article is getting, soon more people will print shit like this... I honestly figured you'd be a little irritated with this... I mean, of course the quote is hilarious, but it does cross a line... does it not??

he has made what could be considered "racy" comments before, not with profanity, but for example that he reads playboy and not the hockey press. he made that on the record, shit he said it in response to a question i asked lol.

you have a room full of recorders and cameras and shit, you're on the record, period. if you are going to go off the record, you say so, and you avoid those cameras and recorders because some of it is live.

he doesn't have a problem with it nor should he. the last people who should have an issue are the fans. do you want a bunch of cheesy ass cliches and boring crap, or do you want something fun? he put it out there, they grabbed it, that's pretty much the end of it to me unless i am missing some major detail.

obviously i have heard some things that were not fit to print (one day i heard a defenseman given a toned down version of allen iverson's PRACTICE!?! rant to his partner) but they were because i was hanging around before a skate or something like that. it was not a postgame thing with a bunch of reporters obviously doing their thing. you overhear stuff between players, obviously that is also off limits. but if it's the little sliver of on the record time, sure, that is fair game.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

The major detail you're missing is that "they" didn't grab it... (that just sounds weird regarding this topic)

One guy printed it... Obviously, the rest of the media in the room felt like it was something said that was not for print (off the record)...

Personally, yeah it's funny and it shows some personality... But I've read reporters being worried that they won't get personality anymore... They're just gonna get the same boring responses to everything...

I mean, you know the room better than any of us in here.... You hear Thornton say something like that, do you print it??

In response to Reply # 27

i mean what is the point of "getting personality" if you can't print it or use it in any way? you're still printing the canned responses and you got a cheap laugh. on top of that, i think getting personality is a matter of guys being measured or letting loose. it's about emotion, it's about passion (c) barry melrose.

here is a for instance, on any given night, pat kane is a cliche machine. i have seen him go on autopilot where you'd think he was a dol with a string on the back that made him spit out random hockey phrases every time you yanked it. yet last year during the conference finals, on a day where everyone was looking for a story about duncan keith's suspension, he let loose with a long, candid interview. everyone knows what he did the rest of the way in the playoffs.

i also think guys are going to be measured in scrums no matter what. you get the best stuff one on one, and unfortunately that type of access is dwindling around the league.

i dont know that i would have printed thornton's comment because i am not sure how newsworthy it would have been about the game. but i can see angles for a game story and certainly a follow up where yeah, i would have used it. it's a helluva response to the people criticizing hertl, who seemed to grow in number overnight there.

the bottom line is that if you say something on the record, it's fair game. here it seems like he was making a side comment of sorts but it could easily have been picked up on live feeds, recordings, etc. why leave it there if it's any good? i dont think it damages the player's rep either, this got him a lot of attention and most print publications have standards where it just said (expletive) instead of cock anyway.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

The Caps 5-on-5 play is not good right now.

Grabovski needs a scorer on his wing. Right now he has Brouwer and Laich.

Erat still struggling away on the 4th line. He's not a scorer, but I think he'll help more.

I dont know if we are going to make a slow start to the season as part of our team identity. But it would be nice if the whole team would work hard in the offseason. But they have so many youngsters that think they dont have to. I thought our D was going to be solid. But the 2 old guys Greene and Mitchell look the best out there. Slava is playing sloppy as shit right now. Doughty is up and down. Making bad passes and holding the puck to long. But still looks great at the same time. Especially offensively. Muzzin had a horrible first game and hasnt seen the ice since. We are getting lazy back checking.

Im starting to think our 1st line needs to be shaken up. Kopi and Williams both pass. They create plays but we need a shooter out there. Brown will score but we need someone who is going to throw the puck at the net as much as they can. The way Carter does on the 2nd line. That is why he scores so much because he is constantly putting the puck on the net. Richards creates the plays and Carter finishes them off. Williams and Kopi constantly passing.

Its frustrating to watch. Also I would be pissed if I was Quick. Constantly leaving my man out to dry. Especially last night in Tampa Bay. Lightning were all up in his shit all game with 2 on 1's and 1 on nones.

I remember when I first got into hockey I wanted to see Ovi and Crosby live. I got tickets to see the Caps and Kings at Staples and holy shit. Watching Ovi out there was like watching a video game. His speed and control of the puck. Every time he touched the puck he was a threat to score. This was during the 09-10 season so he was coming off a big season. You could hear everyone in attendance get excited when he touched the puck. Kings won that game 1-0 I believe. But it was great to see him live.

I have been to 4 games at Staples when the Penguins visited. Still haven't seen Crosby. He was concussed every time. I think I would spend more time booing him than marveling at his skill though.

but the Penguins have gotten tons of nationally televised games for a while now. Crosby is a hockey god. He is just technically flawless. But his bitching and diving and starting shit to only have his henchmen drop the gloves for him really irritate me. He doesnt dive much anymore. But starting shit and never finishing it is at an all time high.

some guys have great style but i think that's just a couple influential guys and a lot of vanity/excess money.

as for ovy and sid, i have seen both live a lot. i enjoy watching ovechkin more, obviously. more of a threat for the big hit. he picks his spots but he picks them pretty well. offensively, too, he has an entertaining shot that he can put along the ice with a sort of steady precision (kovalchuk has that, too), he's got the wicked wrister obviously and he can bomb from the point. he looks like he is floating sometimes.

sid is more of a technical marvel and he has subtle but very important things. not as solid as ovie but he has as good if not better balance, incredible really. his hand/eye is fucking sick, i dont know if i have seen something like it since mario who was some sort of ultra coordinated robot. he is a better all around player but not as fun to watch to me. even his set ups, they are effective and even creative but i dont see them as any more fun than say joe thornton. i never get confused and think i am watching forsberg again.

I actually think 30 was right around his dad's career high, although he was a pass-first player and better all-around.

I still think in the long run they need both Tank and Stewie producing to be a big time threat. Tarasenko has some points, I've only seem him a couple times this year and he didn't make a huge impact though. What is going on with Stewart? Seems like he was getting minutes. I don't understand him, he has loads of talent and he is very competitive, but his career is just riddled with lulls. He almost left the sport, he had some major issues in the minors with Colorado and now he's been even more up and down with the Blues.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

42. "Sabres trade Vanek to Isles for Moulson, 1st rounder, 2nd rounder"
In response to Reply # 0

Tremendous haul for Vanek, so good that they couldn't F around and wait until the deadline approached. He was overpaid for most of his time in Buffalo (thanks to Edmonton's offer sheet) and while he is very good at what he does (shooting and sniping), it's just about all he does. I have never been a big Vanek fan but I could see him doing serious numbers with Tavares and Okposo or Grabner really.

That said, even if he blows up huge, the Sabres had to move him and they got a nice haul for him. Moulson is also in a contract year, I would wager he does finish the season as a Sabre, they will flip him for more futures. Potentially they would wind up with a top 15, a top 25 and a top 45 pick out of this deal. Given where they are right now, that is a tremendous haul.

The other reason I am skeptical about the return for the Isles is that they have just an OK chance of re-signing Vanek. To give up a good player that you probably could have re-signed, a first and a second for a potential one year (albeit a full year) rental is very iffy. On top of that, they needed to solidify their D core with a top 4 guy and their goaltending is also not that strong. You look at those areas of need and say, hey, let's go get a goal scorer. Weird.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

this deal kind of solidifies the movement from "rebuilding" to "competing," which is incredibly exciting as an Isles fan.

To quote Garth Snow: "If we hadn't drafted so well, if we didn't have good prospects, we couldn't afford to take the risk." This team has 4 or 5 guys coming up that look like excellent players, so I think we can afford to live without those picks. Some franchises never get off the rebuilding cycle--they keep stockpiling and eventually wasting draft picks, and never really pull the trigger to jump up a few tiers. I think the Isles can do that.

I have to imagine Vanek gets resigned. We have a ton of cap space, he should LOVE playing next to JT, and possibly his countryman Grabner. We're moving to Brooklyn, which has to make the team more attractive, too. I'm confident they'll get the deal done.

So yeah, pretty excited all in all.

He basically said that the Islanders really didn't have to give up Moulson in the deal. He was essentially speculating but it was a fairly convincing speculation that the price of a first, a second and possibly a peripheral asset would have been plenty for Vanek, but that ownership likely didn't want to pay both salaries this season.

If they don't sign Vanek, this will be terrible. Moulson had good chemistry with Tavares and the production upgrade is not that significant. I don't even think about them making the playoffs or seeding or whatever, because in the NHL there is not a big difference between the 11th pick and the 20th pick, really. The picks are already gone, too, obviously.

The Ducks are going to make a goaltender available soon, there is very little question. They have three pro level guys, one of whom (Andersen) I think could be a top ten goalie in the NHL, and two that are great contract values (Andersen, Fasth) . I think either Hiller of Fasth will be moved. Maybe the Ducks would prefer to move Hiller for financial reasons but if there is similar value or even a bit less for Fasth, they will probably move him instead. Hiller is still the guy they'd put back there if the playoffs started today, for openers.

Why do I mention this? IMO if the Islanders are serious about competing, this won't be their last move. A goalie and a defenseman of substance are what they need now.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Well, that's one milestone reached. We are clearly not resigning Vanek.

JT, Vanek and Okposo were the best line in the NHL for a hot minute there, points-wise. So I think purely in on-ice terms, it was absolutely a significant upgrade. But we never addressed defense/goaltending, so all those points went to waste.

You were so, so, so right. And we didn't do jack shit. I think I'm ready to close the book on the Garth Snow era.

Yeah and that's something they should have had a firmer feel for going into the trade. That said, looking at what they gave up and what the market could be for a Vanek rental, eh, they could recuperate what they sunk into this or at least a close approximation. I could see them getting a good prospect, a first and another pick for him. His rental value in a market without a ton of great forwards (I don't think MSL will move, doubtful on Kesler) could be very similar to the deadline hauls netted by Hossa and Kovalchuk in recent years. I do think the team that acquires him will be thinking rental, not re-upping, so that limits the value from going any higher IMO.

Yeah but if you look at overall production, Vanek had a little dip and his point totals were literally identical to Moulson's last season (44 points in 47 games). Again I definitely Vanek is a better player than Moulson and a more reliable finisher, but he's not so much better that I'd give an already competitive package in addition to him for Vanek. Honestly, that is where they lose in this deal. They will probably get the picks back (though they will be lower in the round), but they won't get Moulson or the first rounder they could have gotten for him in a trade.

The market for defense is pretty thin, unfortunately, and has been all year. Teams are having to take flyers on guys who have been hurt or haven't played consistently on bad teams. But a lot of goalies have changed hands, I am surprised they didn't try to upgrade there.

Snow has drafted decently and avoided some major pitfalls (e.g. overpaying for FAs on the open market). I wouldn't say he has done a great job, but I don't know that most GMs could have done much better.

Probably one of the bigger things that got questioned was his trading down twice in the 08 draft. in the end, he probably should have traded down again lol.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

- Mason has been outstanding. He's made all of the saves you would expect and many that are of the difficult variety. He moves incredibly well for such a big guy.

- After starting firing Lavy, starting 1-7, they have gone 2-0 since their quirky 7-day break. Maybe having a full week to practice under Berube's system was key? We'll see if they can keep it up against the Ducks. They definitely looked much better against the Rangers and Isles.

- Aside from Mason, Lecavalier has probably been their best player. Even without the hat trick on Saturday, he's been their best forward when healthy. Expensive, but so far I can't complain about his addition.

- Looks like they're going to showcase Meszaros for an upcoming trade, as he's in tonight in place of Gustafsson. Over/under on his remaining days in Philly? 14?

- How dangerous could the Flyers be if their forwards (Giroux, Voracek, Schenn, Couturier, Simmonds, Hartnell) actually get going and start scoring? I'm praying that actually happens.

They lost early and suddenly it was like "this iffy tandem" and shit like that. Mason has been above average and Emery had a nice performance the other night as well. Of course it kills me that Bob got moved and did well, that we keep whiffing on obvious under-the-radar talent (Mike Smith, Frederik Andersen, etc etc ) but this tandem is a lot better than say Chico Esche and Sean Burke or Leighton/Boucher.

Hartnell will get it going, saw he had a PPG the other day. Even in this stretch of success they have fucked up, they blew that Carolina game. It's still a work in progress as far as team play and scoring but I see some guys getting their game going. I think once Voracek and G are both going at the same time, some other guys will fall in line. Simmonds is one of them, he isn't a guy who creates offense alone but he's very opportunistic when another guy on his line is generating opportunities.

I knew Vinny was a great signing, I am still kind of confused by Mark Streit's deal but whatever. Lecavalier was in need of a change of scenery, he has a lot left in the tank.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

If it makes you feel any better, you guys won each line brawl paring handily. Though Downie did get concussed in an earlier fight. Hockey is so weird.

Caps didn't even play *that* well. Philly defense & goaltending was awful.

Props to Joel Ward on his first career hat trick.

Not sure why the refs didn't step in when Ray "former boxer" Emery was pounding Braden Holtby in the back of the head repeatedly. That was shitty refereeing.

carry over from last year with the offense doing nothing. that'll change, voracek is already heating up.

they dont have a great team but the east is pretty middling for the most part. lots of jockeying will take place in the standings. i could see the flyers getting a low playoff seed.

Kinda hard to say when their record is 10-1-3... It's just the damn Pacific division is a monster...

The team is getting healthier, though.... Boyle back... Havlat back... When Burns comes back, I'm not really sure where Kennedy goes... He's shown his great speed, but not done much offensively...Without Burns, the team is definitely not looking the same... Hopefully he gets better soon...

I'm really wondering what a completely healthy Sharks lines would look like... Where does Torres go?? The Sharks might be rolling 4 lines throughout the game..and be dangerous on each one... Have to wait until after the olympic break for that though and who knows how healthy the team will be by then....

Because Jason Pominville has 6 goals (added an empty netter) and 2 assists in the last week. And look at Mikael Granlund finally getting a goal to go with all the assists he's been racking up lately.

If this keeps up and we can actually depend on forwards besides Parise, I like the Wild's chances (assuming Harding can keep it up.)

they don't have great defensive depth but it's adequate, their goaltending situation is very solid with the two big men and their forward depth is very good and getting better. johnson, killorn, palat, connolly, those are all guys with varying but nice levels of upside, plus they have namestnikov in the minors. they have some decent defense prospects as well, but not with real near ETAs.

they have quietly built up a talented team and won a good number of games this year already.

Watching them against the Sharks right now (this could be their year, BTW, I can't believe I am saying that) looks like a JV-Varsity scrimmage.

Ryan Smyth just missed a wide open net on a wraparound. Partially bad luck but you have to fucking bury it. They got a break where Boyle lost an edge and turned the puck over. They had a three-on-one, made a fancy passing play with so-so judgment and didn't even get a shot on goal.

San Jose is going to get like 60 shots on them at this pace, too.

they are so fast. It seems they always enter the zone with speed. When they get time in the zone they move the puck beautifully. But they turn over the puck a lot and dont back check. Once they figure out how to play on both ends they could be dangerous. They have a crazy talented bunch of kids.

yakupov, mps, nugent hopkins, hall ... all these guys were playing as teenagers. i dont get that. i am glad they didnt do something dumb and rush nurse, i dont think they even considered it though. with him, schultz and marincin they have a good foundation for the future on D but they dont have any bridge players. they kind of need a goalie but i think a veteran checking center and a couple veteran D would do the job. for all the skill they are supposed to have, they don't do a great job sustaining possession or passing the puck it seems. they have like one goal in their last four home games lol.

fucking drop back passes. These guys refuse to move the puck horizontally. Everything is a 2 line pass trying to get someone on a break away or shit load of drop back passes trying to get fancy. Any team worth a damn defensively will not fall for it. If they just went for simple clean passing with their speed and skill something would open up. But nope. Youngsters got to learn.

In response to Reply # 0

the oilers have a hard on for wayne simmonds and i can see why. if some of the speculation (marc spector for example) is true, i think it could be a great deal for both teams to send simmonds for eberle or yakupov. flyers need a dynamic scorer, oilers need a straight-line, physical player.

eustace king (simmer's agent) is fond of saying that there is no player better at his role in the league that simmonds. this is to say that not only is simmonds the best 2/3 tweener right wing who plays physical and scores, but he is better at doing that than anyone else is at doing what they do in the league. it must have worked because wayne got a fat contract lol.

eberle is a WAY more of a natural scorer and i think yakupov has the tools to be a great all around offensive player. he's still so young, already you can see flashes of the power he could have down the line.

there were a number of hemsky rumors. bullshit. hemsky won't be traded before the deadline. no one is taking on $5M+ before the deadline, when the salary cap essentially goes out the window for a rental player.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

After tying the game in the 3rd, he does this gem through 3 defenders for the win in OT.

The crazy thing is how easy the play looks when he does it.

horrific turnover in the corner that should have ended the game. elias scored to make 3-2 right after eller had tied it (about 3 min left). but they gave PK another shift (he was down on the ice like "fuuuuuuck" after the goal), he did a nice job in his own zone retrieving/moving the puck and then he pinched to create a turnover that led to the tying goal.

going to OT now. three goals in about three minutes, two ties and a lead change.

edit1: wild end to end action in OT, Pacioretty flubbed a breakaway and Greene had a point blank chance he missed going the other way. pk got two of the last three shifts. his second to last one he was doing too much, turned it over, got stuck out on the ice. but he was helping them get the zone. habs won in the shootout, redemption! lol. hands team was out there with desharnais and eller scoring. eller is a really nice player, i hope he gets embraced like koivu. so smart, the puck just seems to find him.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

In response to Reply # 79

It wasn't like he was making a risky play or anything. He just lost the handle on the puck while making a basic forehand to backhand move with the puck. Shit happens.

The game before, PK saved two goals against with his stick at the goal line with Price down and out. PK has been playing on another level lately, but last night was a misstep. He'll make up for it tonight against the Bruins. He always steps up against the Bruins.

I agree with you on Eller. One of my favorites on the Habs. He's basically a bigger, more skilled Plekanec. Love him.

but you know his haters will be all over that.

There is nobody I would want more on a national stage than PK. First off, he has already proven himself, he was outstanding at two WJCs, particularly 2009. Secondly, when the game is tight and the differences are small, a game-breaking player like that can mean the difference between a medal and nothing. To me he is a no-brainer for the roster, you don't see Sweden dicking around Erik Karlsson, do you?

At this rate he would be 5th in scoring had he not missed time and his defense remains elite

With Datsyuk, Franzen, Weiss, Andersson still out Zetterberg is the only opening night center playing right now. Alfie and Helm just got back so reinforcements are coming but Hank is carrying these guys on his back playing on the #1PP and #1PK lines.

Best player in the world imo

93. "Damn.... Letang had a stroke... (swipe)"
In response to Reply # 0

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=704165&navid=nhl:topheads

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Kris Letang, 26, is expected to miss six weeks after having a stroke last week, the team announced Friday.

"Kris had one brief episode of dizziness and nausea last week," Penguins general manager Ray Shero said. "We held him out of the Los Angeles game , and when he continued to feel ill tests conducted in Phoenix on Saturday gave us the first indication of his condition. Further testing then was conducted when he returned to Pittsburgh and he continued to undergo a battery of tests here this week."

Testing also revealed that Letang has had a very small hole in the wall of his heart since birth. This kind of defect in the wall of the heart is present in all individuals before birth but seals shut in most people. It is possible that the hole in the heart led to the stroke.

Shero said Letang's condition is treatable with blood thinners and the expectation is Letang will be able to continue his career.

"The most important thing right now, of course, is Kris' health," Shero said. "We're not thinking about hockey right now. We want to make sure he gets the best possible care and gets better. After six weeks of treatment doctors will re-evaluate Kris."

Letang has been cleared by doctors to go on vacation with his family during the Olympic break. The club announced he will not speak publicly until the Olympic break ends.

"I hope that by making my condition public at this time I can help other people by encouraging them to seek medical help if they experience some of the symptoms associated with a stroke, regardless of their age or general health," Letang said in a statement released by the team. "It obviously was a shock to get the news but I'm optimistic that I can overcome this and get back on the ice."

The stroke is the latest and most serious injury for Letang this season. He missed the Penguins' first nine games with a lower-body injury and sat out 10 games in December with an upper-body injury.

Letang last played Jan. 27 against the Buffalo Sabres and missed the past four games with what the team called an illness.

"We had more understanding the last couple days, more than in Phoenix," Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said. "He's still being monitored. He'll be on blood thinners for six weeks and monitored the whole time. … This can happen to anybody. is a pro athlete and one of the finest-tuned athletes we have. It's scary."

In 34 games Letang has 10 goals and eight assists while playing 24:13 per game, second on the team. He signed an eight-year, $58 million contract extension July 2 that starts with the 2014-15 season.

A 2005 third-round pick (No. 62) of the Penguins, Letang has 54 goals and 227 points in 419 regular-season games. He also has 13 goals and 47 points in 80 Stanley Cup Playoff games. He had 13 points in 23 games in the 2009 playoffs to help the Penguins win the Stanley Cup.

They're already in a few markets that can't support teams, more expansion isn't needed. Maybe Seattle could try and snag Florida or Phoenix sometime next decade.

Seems like there's good support for the T-Birds (jr squad) but other than that it's hard to say. Was just curious if there's been any buzz outside of Seattle about it.

was done with the underlying goal of expansion. they will want a 32-team league to even out the conferences and ease scheduling.

i could see seattle and kansas city moving right into the west. of course there will be pushes in quebec city and either hamilton or mississsauga, but the strength of those markets and the wavering loonie might make it tough. i would love to see the nordiques come back, but only if they wore their traditional sweaters. i don't know about a second toronto team, there's always a big debate about what it would take the leafs to buy into it, the impact on the sabres, etc.

i don't see a whole lot of viable western markets apart from the two i mentioned, but they both seem ready to attract a team. that sprint center has sat there for a long time and obviously seattle would love to get a nice combo arena to get one if not two franchises into it.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

this is pretty much the end of the line for him, too. once you have an onerous contract and you're on a shitty team, you're kind of stuck. luongo is a pretty weird guy but in the end i feel for him. he has had to take crap from all sides in his career, and all he's done is be a well above average to excellent goalie, really. now he sits in a sort of purgatory. i mean the panthers have high picks every year, yet they haven't had a notable player in a long, long time. they also build good depth in their system at times and still never go anywhere. maybe barkov and huberdeau will be different, but overall i think their outfit is pretty pathetic, sort of like the blue jackets were for a long time.

i always thought markstrom was vastly overrated but now i guess we'll see him play behind at least a mediocre team. lack has been good, i hope he wins the job in the long run there.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

penner was not coming back next year and seemed to have exhausted his usefulness in the first third of the season. they clear his money and also fasth's money, who was quickly dropping down their depth chart. cash considerations aside, it makes andersen their full-time backup and lets them promote bobkov back to their No. 2 AHL job, two things that i think were important for those players' development.

i also like the move for robidas, assuming he can come back healthy for the playoffs. they needed to add a second pairing guy who could kill penalties and had experience. he fits exactly what they need, it's just a question of how much he can give them coming off a broken leg.

i wouldn't be surprised to see them move sbisa or allen now either, save some money and clear up a small time log jam. that's if they make a marquee move to rent a big time scorer. if not, then i'd expect them to stay pat and call up a prospect to fill penner's slot. either way they tidy up their cash situation and get better IMO.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

especially looking at those two teams. the penguins are pretty deep organizationally on defense but they have an iffy situation with letand and they also exhausted a lot of draft picks going all in last year for the iggys and murrays of the world.

philly still has a pretty bare cupboard at the lower levels. maybe it's a bit better than it was, but it was fucking terrible. you have to figure they would need to give up a forward of note and/or a whole lot of picks. both vinny and g can play the wing, so that's no big deal, even schenn has played some wing. maybe couturier would move out in the deal. he is a strong player, but hasn't shown a lot of linear development. i could see him stepping into kesler's role in vancouver in time though. excellent skater, responsible defensively and in junior he was a big scorer.

126. "Martin St Louis traded to Rangers for Callahan, 1st, 2nd"
In response to Reply # 0

If the Bolts can re-sign Callahan, this is a tremendous deal. Marty is a singular talent to be sure, but he wanted out and he is getting up there in age.

If there was a deal to be made, this was it. I figured the only place he would go would be the Rangers, but I wasn't sure how much they would give in addition to the departing Callahan to get him.

If you look at it, Tampa got a very strong team player who is much younger plus a first and a second here. Assuming they can keep Cally--he seems to fit under their cap with a 5.5M-6M hit to me--this is tremendous haul. Also, with Stamkos returning and some of their younger guys like Johnson being gifted scorers, I think they can stand to reconfigure their lineup with a grittier player that can still score some.

For the Rangers, maybe they will finally have two explosive offensive players at once. They keep chasing that and it never materializes. St Louis has a 5.7M-ish cap hit next year, final year of his deal. They can make something happen around that.

Overall it's a fair deal for both sides but there is a lot of upside for Tampa, depending on their ability to re-sign Cally and make smart picks, which they have done a good job of recently.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

In response to Reply # 0

Like I said in 2011, why the fuck did the Oilers hang onto Hemsky so hard when there was severe interest in him? Why did they beg him to extend his contract?

They could have gotten a bigger haul than they got for Penner (a future first, a recent first, etc) and they could have moved both players at once. Nothing against Hemsky, but he was clearly in decline after having some fairly serious injuries then.

Not a bad deal for the Sens, he will help their power play and the price was right. It was nice to see him put up a pair of goals in his final game as an Oiler.

He was not on the ice this morning, that's usually a fairly clear indicator. I wonder where he will end up. There are loads of teams that could use him as a 1B guy. His deal is up so no real money concerns, almost every team can afford him with a prorated cap hit. Maybe Chicago?

In response to Reply # 0

I thought the Kings could have done with both Hemsky and Gaborik. Neither is a Sutter kind of player but they could do enough to stay in the lineup. The Kings' power play desperately lacked both passing and finish. Both guys would have helped them a lot.

Neither guy can stay healthy though. Gaborik's body is like game of Jenga at this point. If they get him 100% for the playoffs though, look out, he has come up big in big games and as a natural finisher he has very few peers. He can shoot it off the rush or the pass very effectively, he also moves the puck well.

a 2nd and 3rd and Frattin. Plus 'Lumbus is keeping 50% of his salaray. Low risk, high reward. He just got of IR so hopefully he stays healthy through the playoffs.

I am going to guess the lines go

Toffoli - Kopitar - Gaborik
Carter - Richards - Williams
King - Stoll - Brown
Nolan - Lewis - Clifford or whatever Pearson or Vey.

But I am loving that top 9...if he stays healthy.

In response to Reply # 0

because getting him without giving a first rounder or an elite prospect (granted Collberg has some potential) is a pretty clear sign of that.

Even as a rental I think the price was cheap. You have to wonder how Anaheim whiffed on this, they have a lot of assets and good reason to go all in on a rental.

I felt like Montreal was a forward away last year at the deadline and was disappointed they were not on Iginla's list. Of course, as it turned out both the Montreal D/goaltending and Iginla did fuck nothing down the stretch.

This year, they might not be that close but to me they have the organizational depth to squander some mid-level assets on a rental. Anaheim is even deeper arguably, I am surprised they didn't come up with a better offer.

Of course any way you cut it, this is the latest in a series of embarrassments for the Islanders.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

And obviously Brodeur retiring in NJ makes sense, but also he's just kind of sitting on the bench doing nothing so it wouldn't have surprised me if they sent him somewhere.

In unrelated news, the Caps have to fire GMGM right? I mean, how many years of slightly-above average with the same flaws over & over can one be expected to accept?

The Caps roster desperately needs new eyes.

And better defense.

Adam Oates is on notice too.

have got to be stopped. Someone is gonna get their fucking neck broken. He's supposed to be back for the playoffs...still was unnecessary, though. And yes...I'm mad at this shit:

And if Mike Rupp sees 1 minute of ice time in the playoffs ill be thoroughly shocked. He knows he'll face no on-ice consequence, and the Wild coach knows the Blues are too smart to retaliate during a playoff series.

Such a cowardly play and cowardly decision by the coach to even skate him last night.

But I have to ask, how did he make it off the ice without being required to throw hands?

why he didn't face some swift justice. I dunno. I guess the feeling is we're already catching the injury bug at the wrong time and limping (literally) into the playoffs. I think Backes would have stepped to him, though. Unfortunately...HE'S HURT, TOO!!

So he'll miss at least the first three. And I highly doubt he's going to play any after that.

Two games in a row with Minnesota Wild players targeted, possibly 3 concussions, isn't it time for Mike Rupp in the lineup? #Deterrent

you guys got Hertl back and home ice advantage. You better win this one. I gotta say I didnt want to face you guys right off the bat. Even though you havent been playing very physical this year it seems you like to turn it up against us. Hopefully we can take care of you quick and with out injury so we can make another run at this thing.

In response to Reply # 160

If Torres is back, this will be the first time all season that the Sharks get to skate the team they wanted to when the season started... Either Hertl, Havlat, or Torres has always been injured... The lines for the Sharks should look something like this.... 19-88-48, 39-12-9, 8-57-13, 10-15-83... Youth and speed on every line... Probably the deepest the Sharks have been (as far as forwards)... Biggest differences from last year is 3 solid scoring lines... Solid 4th line... No TJ Galiardi on a PP line... And we have a 41 goal scorer as our 3rd line center...
