http://espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/story/_/id/9663997/mark-sanchez-new-york-jets-likely-headed-surgery-labral-tear-shoulder-end-season-sources

Sources: Sanchez has labral tear

Dr. James Andrews confirmed Wednesday that Mark Sanchez has a labral tear in his right shoulder, and the New York Jets quarterback is "likely to have surgery" that would end his 2013 season, according to team and league sources, as well as a source close to Sanchez.

Sanchez still was trying to make a final decision on whether to have the surgery now to repair the tear and instability in the shoulder following his injury in the team's third preseason game, the sources said

Sanchez could opt to rehab the shoulder in an effort to play at some point this season, sources said, but still likely would need surgery at the end of the year.

Sanchez, replying to a text message, told ESPN late Wednesday night: "If I needed surgery right now, I never would have left Andrews' office. I would've stayed and got the surgery." However, asked if he wanted to deny that he was likely to have surgery, Sanchez did not respond.

A source close to the quarterback said it would make no sense for Sanchez to delay the inevitable under the circumstances of the injury and the team's commitment to rookie Geno Smith.

Sanchez, who saw Dr. Andrews in Gulf Breeze, Fla., is expected to make the decision on surgery within the next day or two, sources said.

When Sanchez was injured Aug. 24 while playing behind a second-team offensive line, he appeared to be on the verge of claiming the starting job after a training camp battle with Smith.

The injury led to criticism of coach Rex Ryan, who claimed he played Sanchez with 11 minutes left in the fourth quarter against the Giants because he wanted to win the game. Owner Woody Johnson even hinted that Sanchez was partly to blame for the injury, saying the veteran failed to protect himself.

Smith, a second-pick now firmly entrenched as the club's future signal-caller, won the first start of his career in Sunday's 18-17 victory over Tampa Bay. The rookie led a late drive aided by a key penalty for the winning score. He did have a fumble that led to a score and an interception, but was solid for the most part and finished 24 of 38 for 256 yards and a touchdown while leading the team with 47 yards rushing.

enough to sarcastically say..."I honestly think this is Ken O'Brien's year....honestly."

He needs to get better, but he's far from the train wreck that some of them other niggaz are. Nigga throwing to Jeremy Kerley and Stephen Hill. Then has neo soul singer Bilal as his halfback. C'mon fam.

I don't deny what the dude did in 09 and 10 in the playoffs was nice, but using that playoff win barometer is dangerous. It's what Tebow supporters have used ever since he threw that beauty of a bomb against Pittsburgh. End of the day, Sanchise has started four seasons and never had better than a 78 QBR for a full season.

All that having been said, I'd love to have him in a Jaguar uniform this season over my turd of a QB, and perhaps I'm being fueled by anti-USC rage after they cost me $150 Week 1 this season.

ya know... the 4 years that had 2 near super bowl teams, a 3rd year of a lowly 8-8 record when he 32 combined td's. Last year was a disaster, yes, but still, this dude was not Browning Nagle or Glenn Foley

He got WORSE.

It happens to QBs. Phillip Rivers, Vince Young, many many
others: some get worse.

He wasn't every that talented, but had sky high confidence
and wasn't asked to do very much, hence the winning.

When he became essential, they sucked, his confidence dropped
and he got terrible.

He wasn't given that chance.

Some qbs get to range from mediocre to ass for a few years.

The Jets have been a sideshow, especially last season with the Tebow shit.

The Jets making him a scapegoat for their shitty roster is weak.

He didn't have an "off" year. He was dreadful.

That's all it takes in the NFL. Its a tough business.

Double edged sword. He was called the new age Joe Namath
at one point too. He was overhyped when he wasn't very good.
He's probably being blamed too much now. He got RICH off the
hype. That's the way the ball bounces, G.

at playing QB

That is franchise QB money, and he don't play like it

He got about as long as you would expect for a mediocre QB, and they're not getting any better. Coaches and QBs get axed pretty quickly, especially with an impatient fanbase. No, it's not all his fault, but is it ever?

as crazy as it might sound, playoff wins don't necessarily determine which quarterbacks are good (see Sanchez, Tebow). Bomb might fail to comprehend that but I know you understand. Sanchise's first couple years he had everything a young inexperienced QB needs to succeed, a dominant offensive line, running game, defense and special teams, young weapons like Keller, Braylon Edwards, Santonio Holmes, Cotchery...he had it all. then his supporting cast began to weaken, which happens, you can't have the best units every damn season, but his development as a franchise QB was supposed to negate that, and clearly it didn't because he failed to progress enough, so the team sucked. he was never an accurate QB, not even in college. he simply can't read defenses well enough to succeed individually in the pros, which is fine, in this league you're either one of two teams, the team with a franchise QB or the team without one, as a dolphins fans I would know, since Marino retired we've been the latter, but you keep looking until you find one. for some reason you and koshersam seem to still have a problem moving the fuck on when ALL the other jets fans like Rex and 40thSt have.

If Sanchez played better, he never would've been in that game in the first place. He was put in because NOBODY was performing better than the other

And that is an INDICTMENT on Sanchez considering Geno was playing with a bad wheel and STILL was neck and neck with him. If Sanchez could've played well against JACKSONVILLE in the PRE-SEASON he would've been named the starter a long time ago

I didn't want him to get hurt, but to say Rex did him wrong when he sucked for 3 years and Rex took ALL THE BULLETS for him, Sanchez can't say shit

It amazes me the same people who spent all offseason shitting on the Jets for keeping sanchez, for even allowing him to compete with Geno, were the same ones to call for Rex's head for having him play in the 3rd quarter of a preseason game

this is the easy assumption but theres no proof to it at all...

Idzik's first draft he took 2 players in the 1st round tailor made for Rex, the Jets could have the best d-line in the league next year and it's due to picks just for him... if they win 8 with a rookie qb I think it'll be tough to let him go, plus the owner loves Rex...

cut him anyway after the season?

and, if so, do the jets end up doing a cut / injury settlement one time deal? (and if geno is completely ass they are back in the qb lottery again in next year's more talent-laden draft?)

what is the benefit of stringing this thing out?

only positives for keeping dude around are to play revisionist history as they suck this year and be like, 'if only sanchez were healthy, we'd be a contender'.

mis-managed as the jets are, that's plausible.

but if its cheaper to cut him, or they can take that tax write off on 2013 taxes, may as well bite the bullet now.

shut down my season.

didn't another jet have that situation before? over a knee or something? team was gonna be ass. he knew he was gonna be bait later, so he said eff it and had the surgery instead of busting his ass to halfway rehab and be ready in december for a late push for 8-8?

was it john abraham?

worked out much better for him.

2004, he was gonna be a free agent, and missed the last 4 regular season games (we lost 3 of them) and two playoff games with an LCL strain.

The Jets franchised him anyway, then traded him after the 2005 season.

they have to have a Jets fan on staff, because they have been nailing it (go read the "Gino Smith Gets Jets Offense" article):

Jets Fans, Mark Sanchez Really Hoping Shoulder Injury Rules Him Out For Rest Of Season

SPORTS NEWS IN BRIEF Sports NFL Football ISSUE 4937 Sep 11, 2013

FLORHAM PARK, NJLonging for some good news, Jets fans reportedly joined quarterback Mark Sanchez Wednesday in expressing hope that the shoulder injury Sanchez sustained during the preseason would sideline the fifth-year veteran for the remainder of the season. Oh man, I sure hope hes done for the year, maybe for good, said 34-year-old Jets fan Lou Alameda, echoing Sanchezs stated wish for a season- or career-ending diagnosis. Well, hes still seeking second opinions on it, so he probably wont take a snap against the Pats this week. Thank God. If this could somehow knock him out of commission for the long haul, thoughthat would honestly be perfect. At press time, renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews had released a statement saying he also hoped Sanchez would never play football again.

Rookie Geno Smith Has Already Mastered Jets Offense

NEW YORKAfter Jets quarterback Geno Smith finished last weeks game against the Giants with a 45.7 passer rating, head coach Rex Ryan told reporters Thursday that the team is very encouraged by the rookies mastery of their offensive system. All camp weve watched to see if Geno understands what were trying to do here, and by completing barely half of his passes and throwing three interceptions against the Giants, he proved to everyone that he does, said Ryan, adding that Smith demonstrated a firm grasp of key schematic elements such as staring down reads, throwing balls behind receivers, and rarely leading a drive of more than 20 yards. When Geno carelessly scrambled out of the back of our end zone for a safety, I knew he was ready to lead the Jets in the regular season. He gets it. Ryan confirmed that Smiths greatest areas for improvement are boosting his relatively low sack and fumble totals.
