"If You Owned the Skins, How Would You Handle the Name Change????? "
Wed Aug-14-13 12:13 PM by WarriorPoet415

Just a light convo topic I was thinking of. (well maybe not so light)

Realistically how would you handle it?

I'm an unabashed life-long Redskins fan. It would hurt to see the name change, just cause I'm so used to it, but I think ultimately it would be the right thing to do. In 10-20-50 years, who would care? A lot of NFL teams were called something else at one point in history.

I think a lot of Snyder's resistance to the name change has to do with $$$$. It's a team worth 1.6 billion that's well marketed and established. You could take a hit by changing the name, but new merchandise sales would probably make that hit a bit softer.

All that being said, if I owned the team today, honestly, I wouldn't change the name right away. I'd phase out some stuff (imagery) over the next 5 years. As I understand it, you'd have to go to the NFL for approval for some stuff anyways, so an overnight change is impossible anyways.

5 years gives long-time fans a chance to say goodbye, maybe gives the franchise a chance to win another super bowl under the old name, and a lot of time to consider a really suitable name as a replacement.(not really a fan of the oft-touted Warriors) I'd keep the color scheme though.

Taking that long would probably piss some people off, but doing something like changing the name (or not changing it) of this particular franchise is gonna piss a lot of people off anyways, so it's whatever....

What say you?

as possible. 1-2 years seems like enough time.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

taking that long would be incredibly insulting.

"We cherish the history of our franchise, but we can't talk about history without recognizing the mistakes of the past. Our legacy rests on our players, our accomplishments, and most importantly, our fans. That tradition deserves a better name, a name all of our fans can support with pride."

Do you try and keep it starting with R or Red in hopes of keeping some continuity? Or just wash your hands of it right away?

everything the same but remove all native imagery & the name

B&G for short

keeps the tradition sufficiently intact for the right wing of the fanbase

keep the Native American theme but lose the offensiveness. go back to this old helmet they used in the 1960's as their logo (they actually had this before FSU started using it).

http://www.sportslogos.net/logos/view/1066/Washington_Redskins/1965/Helmet_Logo

they can keep the color scheme.

In their name, just take out the Native American head and insert some poor toothless white meth head on the side of the helmet, replace the feather with a mullet. I'm sure they could find someone from West Virginia to model the new logo after.

http://www.theonion.com/articles/report-redskins-name-only-offensive-if-you-think-a,33449/

Report: Redskins’ Name Only Offensive If You Think About What It Means

WASHINGTON— A new study published Monday by the University of New Mexico confirmed that the name of the Washington Redskins is only offensive if you take any amount of time whatsoever to think about its actual meaning. “When you hear or say ‘Redskins’ in the abstract, it’s completely harmless, but we’ve discovered that if you briefly pause to remember it’s a racial slur for an indigenous group wiped out by genocide over the course of a few centuries, then, yeah, it’s awful,” said lead researcher Lawrence Wagner, adding that only if you allow the NFL franchise’s name to register in your mind does it evoke the thought of human beings devastated by the forced removal from tribal lands, intentional exposure to smallpox, and countless massacres. “It has the potential to come across as a degrading relic of an ethnocentric mentality responsible for the destruction of an entire people and their culture, but that’s only if you take a couple seconds to recognize it as something beyond a string of letters.” Wagner recommended that the NFL franchise should change their name to something more appropriate and historically accurate, such as the Washington Racist Fucks.
