"Matt Stafford $53 million extension, 3 years"

That's lotta scratch for not a lotta wins, but he's very talented. It's not overpaying imo. You have to throw this kind of $ at QB talent in today's NFL. Although I would have waited one more year to see if he can turn the corner on efficiency 'n such before giving such an extension.

Lions extend Matthew Stafford
ESPN.com news services

DETROIT -- Matthew Stafford's career with the Detroit Lions just got longer.
More From ESPN.com

Matthew Stafford's contract keeps him on the road to $200 million in career earnings, writes Kevin Seifert. Blog

Stafford agreed to a three-year contract extension worth $53 million in new money, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Ed Werder on Tuesday.
He had two years and $23.5 million remaining on his previous deal. He is now under contract with the Lions through the 2017 season and is set to receive $41.5 million in guaranteed money.
Stafford, 25, signed a six-year contract worth up to $78 million, with $41.7 million in guarantees, when he was selected No. 1 overall in 2009.
Detroit drafted Stafford No. 1 overall in 2009. After two injury-shortened seasons, he helped the franchise reach the playoffs two years ago for the first time in more than a decade.
The Lion King

Matthew Stafford's new contract extension guarantees him $41.5 million, the eighth most among NFL quarterbacks. Aaron Rodgers' $62.5 million guaranteed is the most in the league.

A month ago, Stafford vowed that he would focus on football while his agent and the team negotiated.
"I don't play this game to get contracts," he said in June. "I play this game to win games."
The Lions didn't do much of that last year, losing their last eight games to flop to a 4-12 record after a 10-win season.
Stafford threw more interceptions and had less than half as many touchdown passes in 2012 as he did the previous year.
After playing in just 13 games over two seasons, he flourished in his first full year with 41 TD passes while completing 64 percent of his attempts and throwing 16 touchdowns.
He stayed on the field last season, but his passing percentage dipped as did his TD passes (20) while he threw one more interception.
"Matt's not happy with last year," Lions coach Jim Schwartz said during last month's minicamp. "None of us were happy with last year, but you also can't overreact."
Stafford has spent much of this offseason splitting time between his home in suburban Detroit and team headquarters, after working out and rehabilitating injuries elsewhere in previous years.
He has looked back to analyze the previous season, seeing when it was good to take chances with passes and when it wasn't while the losses piled up after climbing to .500 midway through the season.
"It was a total, learning experience just because it was a tough year," Stafford said. "You have to find a way to battle through it."
ESPN NFL Insiders Ed Werder and Adam Schefter contributed to this report. Information from The Associated Press also was used.

On the one hand, you have drooling idiots who have no idea what is going on with this team.

On the other hand, you have the people who are happy he got the extension.

So neat and tidy.

I really doubt that them not re-upping would result in this team getting exponentially better.

Having said that, he could have reconstructed at the time Suh did if he was REALLY about the team, like he regurgitated all day today.

Man, who the hell knows what was going on at Allen Park. They were pretty clear that they were looking at their "Big 3" one at a time (Calvin, Suh, then Stafford). Unless you can show me that the team was hitting him up to restructure/extend for months and he kept passing, then I don't buy it.

The Lions' cap situation is unprecedented in NFL history, and will literally never be duplicated, unless they go back to the old model of rookie salary structures. I'm not gonna be mad that Stafford didn't sign an extension two months earlier unless I know what offer was on the table, and how the negotiations proceeded. Even if he had, how would our off-season have changed? Maybe we offer DHB too much money to steal him from Indy--meh.

In short, don't count another man's money.

I heard Suh and Staff were asked to restructure to help the team. Suh did, Staff didnt.....thats it.

And yes, the Lions were the last victims of the awful rookie deals.

Stafford already restructured his deal to help the team--twice. I know you wouldn't argue that a guy is only team-first if he restructures his deal 3 years in a row.

August 2011: http://www.mlive.com/lions/index.ssf/2011/08/report_detroit_lions_matthew_s.html

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford restructured his contract to give the team a reported $6 million of additional room to sign some unrestricted free agents.

March 2012: http://www.mlive.com/lions/index.ssf/2012/03/detroit_lions_restructure_cont.html

Stafford had a cap number of more than $17 million, but along with Burleson, restructured his contract for the second time in as many years. By converting his $11.5-million base salary to minimum, more than $7 million in cap room was created, according to the team.
_______

Should he have just gone the length of his rookie deal restructuring every offseason? If you keep deferring money, it has to get paid out eventually. Stafford has done right by the Lions at every turn--this reeks of inventing non-football reasons to put dirt on his name.

That shit doesn't affect me at all. But "if he was really about the team he'd have restructured (3 years in a row)" is just objectively, factually incorrect. I get all internet-defensive when people type false shit about teams I follow--my problem, not yours.

(I can never tell with you--I don't actually know if you were conceding the point, or making a wanking motion with your hand and saying "yeah, right, cuz I'm the ONLY person who feels this way, sure thing." I suspect the latter.)

If we really came to this guy hat in hand for the third year in a row, and he felt like saying "Guys, I want to stay here, I do, but maybe let's work on an actual extension instead of just reworking my fucked-up rookie contract every single year," then I'm fine with that. 100% fine. Two restructures in two years earns him a sufficiently high score in my proprietary "cares about the team" metrics.

Now back to worrying about Jason Fox's surgically repaired knees.

I know it must have been a ridiculous situation, as a 23-year-old, to come to an 0-16 team full of veterans that had covered themselves in shame the previous year, and be making more money than entire position groups the moment you walked in the door.

I think it would be pretty fucking hard to get a locker room behind you in that situation. Add in his early injuries, and what right-minded person wouldn't be a little sheepish about making that kind of scratch for such a limited output?

So I've always imagined his willingness to rework that absurd contract twice in his first 3 years was meant in part to show the guys around him that he wasn't a glory-boy, that he wasn't content to merely collect checks on a terrible team. By all accounts, the locker room leaders--Dom, Backus, Delmas, Calvin--have all backed him fervently, so it must have worked on some level.

Edit: all Fox has to do is not make us miss Gosder, which is a lower bar to clear. I can't remember the last time we drafted a project and actually developed him, but by all accounts this was "The Plan" with Jason all along. He had 1st/2nd-round measureables and talent, he just got hurt at the wrong time. They might be a year or so behind schedule due to his foot injury, but the brass liked what he showed in college and they've had 3 seasons to work with him, so I'm cautiously optimistic. The flipside of that is this: if they think he's good enough to start at RT and they're WRONG, then fuck this entire coaching staff.

I think he has a bounce back year. I'm targeting him in fantasy HARD. I know his record against teams with a winning record is bad but I also saw that his defense gives up 28 pts a game in those matchups so it's not all on him.

Lets not forget this is the guy that led the Lions to their first playoff berth in over a decade.

but he had to be extended, since his cap number the next few seasons was debilitating. the only other option is to start severing ties with him (inciting an immediate rebuild). young, talented and dumb, but the Lions were in a spot where they had to make the long-term gamble.

(maybe more like four decades in Detroit's case).

You've been on this site trying to hype Chad Henne & even John Beck before now moving on to Tannehill's bum ass.

You are the Patron Saint Of Shitty QB's with that post-Marino Miami mess & therefore can't tell me nothing.

playing on a team that had #3 options masquerading as #1 and #2, mediocre tight end receivers and a Reggie Bush/Daniel Thomas running attack.

I was prepared to hate on him in 2012 but he surprised me. he throws a really great deep ball and is comfortable buying time in the pocket. he should be better with Mike Wallace, Dustin Keller and Lamar Miller.

he also had a higher QB rating than Mark Sanchez did in either of his first two NFL seasons. of course, that means little since JaMarcus Russell also had a higher QB rating in his second year than Sanchez did.

no way he regresses this year, he had no weapons last year, surrounding your rookie franchise QB with Brian Hartline, Davone Bess, and Anthony Fasano should be a fireable offense. TY Hilton should be a Dolphin

lol hey our games will be exciting this year, Tanne throwing bombs to the fastest wideout in football, explosive Lamar Miller from the U breaking off long runs, we got Keller who's been one of the most underrated TE's in the league, on defense our front 7 is about to be nasty.

>They playing any primetime games?

we got like 3 i think, we play Saints at the dome on MNF Sep 30, then the Bengals on Halloween, and then MNF again Nov 11 against Tampa.

Tannehill will soon become a better QB than Sanchez ever was or ever will be, you can bet the mortgage on that.

These are capable NFL starting QBs so naturally they'll be overpaid. Jay's the toughest QB in the league so he earned his paper. Dude almost died playing football the year he played a season with knowing he had diabetes. He tore up his knee and had everyone including people in this post calling him soft. This is despite the fact that he came out and tried to play on that knee.

Matt is overrated but brings some semblance of stability to the position. Shaun Hill is more than capable of duplicating some of Matt's numbers if need be.

We've seen good game managers sign lucrative contracts off the strength of the fanbase copping pleas. Old niggas talking about some you're not close to management bullshit. If Carolina doesn't want to give it to him they should hand the reigns back to Jimmy Clausen.
