But I don't think that's it. that seems to deal more with bone structure. What I'm talking about seems to deal more with muscles. It's like some scary ish. Lifting too heavy too fast? Did their muscles rip out the sternum and reattach themselves elsewhere?

how and where you carry muscle and fat is genetic. The "befores" were all when they were at their peaks and had to look incredibly big, which likely meant bulking up via either dietary or pharmaceutical means. That gap is always there, but the inner pecs just balloon up to cover it. When they got older (those dudes except the first guy are pretty damned old) and started rightly worrying about that sort of treatment on their body, they lost the artificial bulk and genetics took over again.
Just happens.
