"Let's take another look at the mythical "clutch gene" re: #Kang"

First off - I was in the building last night to Witness Miami (c):

http://instagram.com/p/Zokj0rqtrC/
http://instagram.com/p/Zo8_X9Ktn1/

Pure electricity in Miami as the Kang output a triple-double & a buzzer beater.
Quite the auric field around that man in person.

Now that I've rattled a couple #HurtLockers - let me get to the point:

Most Game-Tying/Go-Ahead FG in Playoffs - Final 24 Seconds of 4th
Qtr/OT Since 2003-2004:

LeBron James: 7-16
Kobe Bryant: 5-17
Kevin Durant: 5-12
Dirk Nowitzki: 5-12

So it appears we can demystify and debunk yet another "myth" about
LeBron -- that being: he doesn't close. As the stats reflect, he has
evolved into the best closer in the game when it matters most.

upset?

there will definitely be a strong argument for that IMO.
There's never been someone as multi-dimensional as him, period.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

it's silly. it's not even fair to him. his body of work isn't complete yet.

all this 'on pace to do xyz' stuff is whatever. nothing is certain.

we can't wait til he's done to decide whether he's the best ever? why can't he just be "the best now"? that's not good enough?

In response to Reply # 2

Regardless of what you think of Jordan being the best player ever (it's totally irrelevant to the argument), he hasn't played for 15 years now (I'm not gonna count the Wizards years, cause why).

15 years and the rise of LeBron with gaining his titles, MVPs, etc. and now you can make the conversation because people will totally forget how great Jordan was in that time (not ENTIRELY of course, but memory fades). Again - doesn't matter if you think Bron > Jordan or vice versa, it's just why you're seeing this narrative start to play out.

>or 6 rings and 5 MVPs...and maintains his current stats. he
>better.

the narrative anytime lebron doesn't win an MVP is "who has the better story"

by that logic, Malone and Barkley took two that should have stayed with Jordan, which would have given him 7. People are marveling at Lebron's dominance when a player every bit as dominant in his time only has one more MVP trophy than him RIGHT NOW? FOH on that particular aspect.

That's why, NO my dude, Lebron cannot push him off the mountain with just 3 more regular season MVP trophies.

I will judge him as I judged Kobe, and Lebron SHIT THE BED in two Finals. How he played in those losses is worse than losing them, so just tying Mike with 6 is not enough in my book, especially when one of them came with "the help."

Truthfully, I prefer the nigga to finish his career and then to be evaluated but people refuse to wait that long and are so damn pressed....why should something logical like perspective be factored into this situation? smh

and phil should have more than ONE coach of the year. that's the danger of an award that receives votes as opposed to strictly merit based. Finals MVP are at least directly tied to the series. All I'm saying is Lebron's number of MVPs ain't got shit to do with his overall greatness compared to Mike. It's ALL about rings at this point.

i said Tiger Woods was the greatest golfer back in 00 and he got that title and Bron has the honor to me.

i mean over the past 15-20 years we have seen some of the greatest players ever and yet this cat's window is a sky scraper all by himself.

if he keeps winning jewelry stays healthy and motivated its a wrap, however right now 2 different teams he has won multi league mvp's all star and been to the finals with 2 different teams, speaks volumes.

and to play with a fellow superstar and hall of famer in Dwyane Wade and not miss a beat is amazing and chris Bosh as well.

bron imo has flipped the script.

he got Jordan Peers talking about it, he made Kobe Bryant yesterday's news a while ago and the scary part Kobe is still badd, he makes Kevin Durant seem ordinary and lets be real kevin durant would be gobbling mvp trophys back to back were it not for da Kang.

melo is almost forgotten in some circles.

i'd probably go with bron because of his versatility on both sides of the ball. he allows you to creatively optimize the rest of your personnel in a way that no other player really can. not saying LBJ is *better* but his impact on what you can do is outrageous.

the evidence is so damn obvious right now. i'm sure they'll go back to making things up as soon as bron retires, but for right now even they don't have the heart to lie in public.

>how dare you hold Bron to the same Kobe standard...

right? Bron never had to play for an inept franchise
with Mo Williams and Anderson Verrajao as his best supporting 2.....for 7 years.

Meanwhile, Kobe was in the dungeon of an under-privileged
franchise with all stars Gasol & Bynum manning the front-court.

in what individual AREA of the game is bean superior to bron? outside shooting i will give you. bron can score at the same volume when he turns it on, he is ALWAYS considerably more efficient, he is a more willing and effective passer, he can guard more positions and he is better at guarding all of them as well as playing off the ball.

so where is kobe better again?

with his mid-range post-up game and fade.
He's developed into a pure shooter. But that's
the only aspect of his game (along w/ FT% - related
to the purity of his shot) where I'd rate Kobe
above Lebron.

You can't even make a cogent article that Kobe is
more "clutch" (which really is code-language for i like
kobe more than lebron). The numbers just don't corroborate that
myth any longer.

Makes sense, the last time I can remember him actually hitting a 3 to win the game was ECF game 2 against Orlando.

Let's examine what #KANG did when the pressure was mounting on his shoulders as the took the lead in the final minutes of the 4th quarter & it seemed like he was about to catch yet another L:

-Turnover by L. James (lost ball; steal by K. Leonard)
-Turnover by L. James (bad pass; steal by M. Ginobili)
-L. James misses 3-pt shot from 26 ft
-L. James makes 3-pt shot from 25 ft (assist by M. Miller) {WIDE OPEN 3 as Danny Green was leaking out}
-L. James misses 3-pt shot from 26 ft
**Then the bail out happens**
-Offensive rebound by C. Bosh
-R. Allen makes 3-pt shot from 25 ft (assist by C. Bosh)

From here on he played just as he should have all along.... like a man that escaped from the jaws of death & was given a 2nd lease on life.

WHAT'S GOOD *****? What's REALLY good?!?!????!!! Ha HA!

if he didn't turn the ball over (and pick up fouls) on two critical possessions, they would have never been in that position. and FOH at him going out of his way to snitch on blatt twice when nobody said a fucking thing about those turnovers or his shooting the ball poorly to that point.

he kept saying it was a team effort but everything screamed for attention to be called to him. yes, great, he made the big shot, but with that attention also comes scrutiny. he didn't exactly slam the door on chicago when he had multiple chances to do so.

stats don't lie.

Bron is the most clutch player in the game, and so many poorly informed, biased fans on this board claimed he was the *least* clutch of the superstars just a couple of years ago.

It's beautiful when it all comes full circle.

He has been that good and he'd only be better if Irving were healthy. They have guys to dominate the ball. They had some shooters now. That kind of erases any gap between Love and Thompson. Both are very good rebounders at both ends, but Thompson offers more on defense, plus he is still getting better.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Which is probably smart, but will Love accept that? Probably Not.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

Or honestly it will be situational, if they are down and needs points go with Love, protecting a lead play Tristan. Either way platoon them in a way that's palatable to both, if starting is a big deal to Love, let him start. Starting is for high school (c) Rick Majerus

He's not ready to buy in. He can come off the bench and get the offense run through him with kyrie and lebron on the bench..

It was clearly Tristan who got the rebound on the step back 3 after Bron bricked, and you are so pressed you can't even call Bron's last shot a layup like it was. You probably thnk Lebron had like 25 assist the role players just didn't do their job.

Yeah....let's chill with this, at least for this game....I'll be the first to point out when James drops a suspect performance...

But let's keep it real. The only reason the Cavs were THISCLOSE to stealing that game was because of James. That's all to it...

Bron balled his ass off... but part of that was GS strategy. Let Bron shoot and take away his ability to create for others. I think Bron was worn down late in the game & OT. What I pointed out was just a matter of fact, not necessarily a criticism. I understand why he wasn't able to close... 41 minutes in regulation & he carried the load offensively.

Yeah...It's not that they took away his ability to create for others. They just flat out shut down the Cavs' role players.....

Cleveland should have won that game. It was the only way the Cavs could win a game like this: By James being dominant on the offensive end and controlling the pace of the game...

I think the media has been a little too respectful of James, and rightly so, I guess. Not too many people have been willing to keep it real. GS is just a vastly superior team. And it's going to take James to be a hybrid of 40 point-game-Jordan and a 10 plus-assist-game-Magic to even take this series to 6 games....

There's no amount of nitpicking anyone can do to James after that game. He's the main reason the Cavs LOOKED like they belonged on the same floor as the Warriors...

I mean if he played that way in any five-minute stretch of the game it would have barely registered in anyone's mind. He had a weak finish to the game but credit GS and also look at no one from Cleveland really stepping up. The only guy that really was consistently giving him a target was Mozgov, Thompson also found some ways to contribute.

You know who I hate? Screamin A Smith. He was crying about other guys not getting shots like that was Bron's fault. Bitch, GET OPEN. Smith couldn't free himself for shit. Shumpert was on that chumpert, no jumpert shit. Like his only real good look I can remember was a pullup in transition and he clanked it. Screamin A was also calling out Blatt for playing Irving too many minutes. Thankfully Jalen and PJ basically told him to STFU in a polite way. I think I am starting to hate Screamin A as much as I hate any random ass racist talk radio personality.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

there was no foul on the last play in regulation, he travelled before the hack. The jump was a definite foul on Draymond.

He had an amazing game but they missed 15 out of 19 down the stretch at the end of regulation and he turned the ball over dribbling off his foot with about a minute left.

He had an amazing game but you continue to ignore reality.

Stars get those calls - but the refs were clearly on some 'let them play' - which is fine - but that philosophy can't be applied blindly.

Play at the end of regulation: Iggy fouled him on the floor before Bron made his move to finish at the rim - Iggy hooked his arm, that's a foul, period. The bumps at the rim were incidental and shouldn't have been called.

The travel play: call the travel, then. Either call the travel - or call Iggy's assault.

Green jump-ball: Egregious and intentional cheating. He should be suspended.

>if a guy is out of control, he gets no mercy.

It's never an official's job to make a judgment call on the strategy/execution of a play. That's for coaches and analysts to pick apart and have an opinion on.

An official is a technical creature, charged to call the game as objectively as possible. Never should they be on some "Oh what a horrible sequence! I don't care if he gets clothes-lined, i'm not bailing him out with a foul!"

Non-sense.

You call the game as technically flawless as humanly possible. Their entire focus should be on the micro-details of a guy defending and all of the movement/angling/positioning taking place when there's physical contact. There's no time to be having an opinion on whether or not a play is disintegrating and only a 'foul' would save the possession < not their job.

Similar call at the end of the 3rd quarter to illustrate this: After Speights missed his atrocious dunk attempt, the ball was loose. There were just seconds left in the quarter and Delly scrambled to the ball. As he did, Speights straight bull-dozes into his back and drops him to the floor. Loose-ball foul 10 out of 10 times. Delly should've been at the line (Cavs were in the Bonus). But ref falls down, and seems to be like 'NOPE! not giving you two free throws here! Sorry Don't Care!"

Giving the officials too much room to subjectively officiate will always signal horrible results. Only time they should be playing "I'm above the technical constraints of the rules" is when they are attempting to make a make-up call. I've seen multiple times where they miss a call (and they know it) - and then they make a call on a 50/50 type of play that goes to the team that was unjustly burdened by a bad call in an attempt to neutralize the situation.

this sounds lovely (apart from the poorly explained/applied secondary example), but it's not how things are done nor should it be. a professional ref would find it laughable. you're not going to call everything out there, or the game is never going to end. you call the ones that affect the play as much as possible. you also have to control the game in many ways, including controlling players looking for contact over making plays and other things that can make a game sloppy for all involved parties. btw, if they are calling the game "as technically flawless as humanly possible," then it was a travel and a turnover.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

There just wasn't enough contact for a call. I thought there was a little contact between Iggy/Bron prior to the drive but nothing major once Bron started down the lane..

He didn't have a good close to the game but there not in a position to close w/o his contributions so..

Cavs down 10 when James subs in to the 4th quarter. Seven minutes later they're down 19 after James goes 0-2 from the field, shoots no FTs, and tries to will his team back to a victory by dumping it down low to Mozgov or kicking it out to Dellevedova.

That mythical clutch gene never kicked in.

but he's got to be on the floor w/ Moz to start that 4th. G.S. pushed it to
10 in a blink of an eye - and then Bron had to come back in and try to
play hero-ball with a dead, under matched squad that couldn't hit a jumper.

Tall order. Even too tall for the Kang.

2 FG attempts in 7 minutes when his team needed him most.

He was exhausted and content to take the L and move on to Game 5.

Better hope your idol starts producing in the 4th, because the stats aren't looking too good right now...

Throughout the Finals, Bron's production from the field over the last 5 minutes of the fourth quarter and in the two overtimes was....

wait for it....

8-32

he made eight shots out of the thirty-two he took. marinate on that.

that's an abysmal 25% shooting from the self-proclaimed, best player in the world when his team needed him most.

Bron does not have a clutch gene.

This series didn't show us anything new about Bron. He's almost superhuman but not quite. I don't think you can judge his efforts late in these games considering the minutes he played. I mean the "clutch gene" is just some dumb shit for mush heads, and no one is going to confuse LeBron with Larry Bird, true. But I don't think "this was a huge W for the Bron is not clutch" contingent. It was weird, in the end I look back on these finals as plainly as possible. They were just a thing that happened. The first game was great, some of the others were competitive and/or engaging but there was little sense of suspense as to the winner for me (even when Cleveland was up 2-1) and I felt like things mostly just took their course. I understand that is the nature of a seven-game series, but sometimes it goes beyond that and becomes an incredible competition. That didn't happen here, I just felt like the Dubs gradually wore them down before our eyes and then it was over.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

James does it all … except in the clutch

It would be hard to blame James for the Cavaliers’ loss in the 2015 Finals. He became the first player to lead both teams in points, rebounds and assists per game in an NBA Finals.

He scored or assisted on 57.7 points per game during the 2015 Finals, the most per game in Finals history – beating the mark of Michael Jordan (55.3) in the 1993 Finals.

But, in clutch time, James faltered. (Clutch time is defined as the last five minutes of the fourth quarter and overtime with the score within five points.)

James missed 14 of his 17 field goals in clutch time during the 2015 Finals, including shots to win in regulation of Game 1 and Game 2. The Cavaliers were outscored in the fourth quarter and overtime in every game but Game 6, when the Warriors had a comfortable lead entering the quarter.

For his career in the Finals, James has shot just under 30 percent in clutch time, which does not compare favorably to the shooting percentages of Kobe Bryant and Dwyane Wade.

That's not clutch, that's good fortune...he missed it so badly that it banked in lol. As I said in the game post, credit to him for just getting that shot off though...great reverse pivot. Regardless, reminds me of when Kobe hit the bank game-winner over Wade on xmas day and people were trying to call it clutch....no, he missed it so badly that it banked in. That's good fortune.

Now Bron's prior 3's and all his great reads? absolutely clutch.

Was this luck, too?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VEO4OsnXYcQ

Just give him his due, man. He's a clutch player and has as many (if not more) clutch memories as any ATG player. The stats also are in his favor for clutch-performance as it pertains to success ratio in game-tying/go-ahead baskets under a minute.

Dude is clutch, period.

I'm not saying he meant to bank this (although he and Love practice this play - so he's probably banked that in during drills and knows the nuances of that angle) - but to see this was all luck is petty. It's probably a higher degree of difficulty to swish that shot than to bank it from that angle. Still requires depth perception and skill to get that shot off w/ trajectory control, in rhythm, while tip-toe'ing the space between the 3 point line and out of-bounds line.

>Now Bron's prior 3's and all his great reads? absolutely
>clutch.

Bron has done that so many times in his career - carrying a team in the final 3-4 minutes of the fourth with Herculean play - but for some reason it's only clutch if it's a buzzer-beater which is silly.

Even said him getting that shot off (and I said this in the game post as well) takes a lot of skill and noted that all his other plays down the stretch were clutch. However, that shot was a certainly a lot of good fortune because if you actually think he's trying to bank that shot in and has found some secret trajectory from the angle that no one before ever has...I mean cmon.

Calling one shot for what it is doesn't discount everything else nor does it discount the result. Not sure why you posted that corner 3 vs the Bulls...I expected a video where he had banked a 3 to show that maybe he was actually trying to do it.

not just for the title

but because of what he has been able to do under fire. that shot doesn't happen with a ridiculous pass from Kevin Love

and it isn't the first time that happened... '15 season playoffs against the Bulls, damn near a similar shot to keep that series from going 3-1. I don't think they had Ky or Kevin during that series. SHUMP and JR had to carry the supporting weight.

Last night was a perfect example of the big 3 in their balance (although usually Ky is much more effective - but he made up for it with possibly the greatest OT performance I've ever seen).

But you have Love banging - getting crucial boards - igniting breaks w/ crisp, intelligent passing off the defensive glass - and hitting 3's like a boss. Love is playing so smooth and in his natural flow right now. And Bron just going full tool-box, doing everything that needs to be done while being the swiss army knife floor general. Bron is passing the ball more adeptly than I've ever seen him do. And Kyrie has developed into a real closer - and a guy who can go off at any moment, and it's usually right when they need it (like last night).

When you think of Bron's leadership evolution through his first stint in Cleveladn - to 4 years in Miami - to now - it's an unbelievable ascendancy into the game's most collaborative quarterback. We won't ever seen a play-making, team-first superstar of this order ever again in the game. I'm appreciating every second.

with the game tied or his team losing (playoffs) where the shot resulted in a game-winner - which is a new record (Jordan was previously 5/11). He also now has the most walk-off buzzer-beaters in playoff history (4). Jordan held the title previously with 3.

Kobe is like 2-for-134 in such situations, but he never was questioned for a lack of "clutchness" -- ain't that interesting?

Hope everyone's doing well.

between Bird, Kobe, Magic etc.. Even he is saying "I'd take Lebron." This is obvious simple-simon logic to most sane analysts (of course you'd take Lebron over anyone not named Jordan (and possibly Kareem) - but the fact that Stephen A. has even seen the light is newsworthy (as he held water for Kobe for as long as he could).

The "lebron's not clutch' thing has never been based in fact. It's similar to the birtherism movement: just non-nonsensical lunacy from media personalities trying to sell ratings.

By all empirical evidence/metrics- Lebron is the *most* clutch player in NBA history. It's absolutely hilarious to watch people flounder all over the place trying to make up their own facts.

Well - Jordan got swept in 1st round so that's one reason it didn't get to a game 7. But he did get to game 7s in some situations - and he performed great.

Look - Jordan is the GOAT to me still (although I have LeBron is 1b to Jordan's 1a) - but this notion that Jordan's resume is without blemish is just not true.

Lebron:
ppg: 34.4
fg pct: 49%
3-point pct: 40
rbg: 10.4
+/-: +44

Kobe:
ppg: 21.6
fg pct: 37
3 pt pct: 39
rpg: 7.4
+/-: +1

Never come out your mouth and say Kobe is more clutch than LeBron ever again. He went like 6-87 in the game 7 against Boston in the Finals (saved by Metta World). Kobe is actually decisively *not* clutch by all metrics. He doesn't have as many game-winners, buzzer beaters - or big-time moments as LeBron - and it's not even close.

Kobe is a really good player.

He's just not anywhere near Lebron's galaxy.

Let's leave him alone.

Yet another playoff buzzer-beater - that's 5. Most buzzer-beaters and game-winners and that margin is widening and will likely never be topped.

and it's crazy that there's *still* lames on TV who have made careers out of peddling non-sense re: LeBron.

First you've got guys calling that 3 point shot against the Warriors "luck" - then you've got the Skip Bayless MJ Evangelicals grasping on for dear life to try to denigrate the Kang Legacy at every turn...

but Chris Broussard said it best yesterday:

"The biggest misperception in the history of the NBA is the myth that Lebron James is not clutch. He's one of - if not the - most clutch player in NBA history."

Had to be said.

Most buzzer beaters in NBA playoff history? LeBron - who has more than Jordan and Kobe *combined*

Most game-tying/go-ahead FG in the final minute (last 25 seasons):

🐍 Kobe - 101
👑 LeBron - 97

Agendas will continue to be walked down left & right.

Enjoy.

after they were fucking around with Drummond so long earlier in the game. Lakers couldn't buy a bucket but every time LeBron was in in the 2nd half, the bullshit stopped and Lakers started capitalizing off those many turnovers.

So used to watching the offense stall when it seems no one is open... Not LeBron. Timing plays that ended up in the hands of AD who is as sure handed as it comes at the rim. Careful but purposeful passing.

And then some of those bullyball shots with razzledazzle endings really makes you think somehow this guy still manages to get better on offense despite being in the league almost 20 years.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

Even before he went to Miami it should’ve been dead. I guess the disappointment of the first season in Miami restarted the convo, but the next season should’ve killed it forever. Idk, people really like to hang onto things when it’s convenient.
