"Let's get physical, physical: Grizz @ Spurs (Game 1)"

This game is going to be won in the trenches....if Splitter stays out of foul trouble, I like the Spurs chances. Otherwise, Houston we have a problem. The wing players on each team are going to be limited b/c they are defense first player & they really have no one to guard. I guess, Tony Allen on Parker & Danny Green on Conley might be implemented.

WHAT'S GOOD *****? What's REALLY good?!?!????!!! Ha HA!

but up until this point the playoffs have kind of aligned well for them match up wise
this round they won't have the better coach and their perimeter defense is going to be stressed like it wasn't the previous 2 rounds
this is looking like a classic no one believes in the spurs run
1st game should be interesting as far as outlining the match ups

clocking serious minutes this postseason (averaging around 40 minutes per game). How will the Spurs bigs be able to match up with. Can the Spurs afford to keep Duncan on the bench too long?

Like the last series, I really think the key for the Spurs is just knocking down the open shots. I don't think Memphis is gonna give Duncan/Splitter much inside looks and it's probably going to be real tough for Parker to slash in the lane. But the open outside shots should be there.

So far, Spurs shooting lights out. Let's hope it continues.

Timmay's ice cold shooting (he still contributing with his defense and passing though) and Ginobli's ineptness.

The Red Rifle is taking full advantage of the many open looks he's getting. Parker doing a far more effective job than I expected in getting to the basket as well.

Gasol is going to be a problem though. He's damn near impossible to guard on offense to his outside range and ability to post up/drive to the basket. Thankfully, Z-Bo is in la la land and hasn't been a threat yet.

spurs executed their gameplan flawlessly today
no real perimeter threats for the grizz
so they'll live with gasol taking 16 elbow shots for 15 pts
or poindexter being the main 3 pt threat
duncan can handle zbo by himself apparently
and after getting props for dominating reggie jackson and derek fisher last round the gatekeeper will have to step up against top5 tony
if this is how tayshaun and allen close out on perimeter shooters than the spurs should be aight
*wide open bonner 3 thru this post*
and i honestly forgot that ED DAVIS!!! (c) longo was on this team
good to see him getting tick in garbage time today
hollins saw pops match ups now he has to adjust for game 2

conversely, Bonner will never again be that effective.

Good performance by the Spurs, this is still a potentially scary series for them if ZBo goes back to the guy from last series & if they can close out at all on these threes especially from the corners.

I was having a hard time seeing how Timmy was gonna be able to hold up against this front-line but defensively he was great out there today.

Still think it's gonna be a long series tho.

If Z-Bo is going to be assigned to guard him, Pop will keep running the high pick-n-pop all day.

The Spurs will always get those look as long as their ball mvt isn't disrupted. So, basically it's disrupt the ball mvt by forcing TOs/deflections or pray that the shooter miss. Once the whole team gets in rhythm, it's baby bye bye bye (c) Nsynce

>I was having a hard time seeing how Timmy was gonna be able to

This ain't Timmay playing on one leg w/ 50 years old Mcdyess as his front-line mate. Gasol/Z-Bo are actually the perfect matchups for Tim in that he is actually more athletic that either one & that the Grizz don't run many PnRs to expose his declining feet speed on switches. Tim is as good an interior defender as there is in the league but I can't say the same about his PnR defense any longer.

>Still think it's gonna be a long series tho.
I'll wait to see what adjustments Hollins makes otherwise, the Spurs aren't going to roll over and beat themselves like the Clips/OKC. The onus is on the Grizz to make it a series.

Hollins will make adjustments on both of those after yesterday I'd imagine.

I agree but I meant hard time as he can only guard one & I wasn't all that confident Bonner/Splitter/Diaw could guard the other.

The Grizz will make it competitive as long as ZBo can bounce back.

Objectively, which is pretty impossible in this forum.

The Grizzlies beat a depleted Thunder team in one of the closest 5 game series possible. If the Thunder would have had ANY decent big man play in that series, they would have won it even without Westbrook. People get too attached to who won, and don't pay enough attention to how they won, and the luck factor in close games.

The Spurs are the anti-Thunder, the best coached team in the league, that moves well without the ball and has a ton of guys who can and will step up. Memphis really doesn't match up well with THIS Spurs team. The Spurs could definitely get into a shooting slump and lose that way, but I don't think that happens in 4 different games.

But c'mon all 5 games are basically tied with 2-3 minutes left. There is some luck winning a series like that in 5 games. The Thunder didn't need Westbrook as much as they needed a legitimate NBA front court. The Thunder without Westbrook were basically an ideal match up for Memphis, who plays great defense(you can't play Iso ball against a team like that). The Spurs are not like that at all, Bomb mentioned Randolph having a horrible game and Bonner going off, both of which probably won't happen to that degree again in the series, but Duncan and Ginobhli barely scored themselves.

yea if beverly doesn't dive across westbrook's knees we're probably watching a rematch of last yr's conference finals right now
all things considered the thunder series was VERY close. even without westbrook and with perk/ibaka getting beasted in the front court thunder had an opportunity to win those games if durant had performed a lil better in those 4th quarters
1 game doesn't mean shit tho. spurs beasted 1st two games against the thunder last yr then ate 4 Ls in a row
hollins has to make the right adjustments and the grizz players have to step up and show they can live up to the hype when it matters

He did get into the paint & made some tough shots but the help was late on his drives b/c they were busy denying Z-bo. Had Pop made it a point to prevent his drives into the paint by hedging on his drives before he got into the restricted area he could easily be reduced to a jump shooter or a playmaker. Basically, Pop's strategy seem to be I'll let anyone beat me but Z-Bo; the person that was checking Gasol (mostly Tim/Splitter) didn't even bother to close out on Gasol when he was peppering them from the FT line b/c they knew it would led to the high-low pass directly Z-Bo & thus, he would be too far away to provide any kind of help.

He basically got his ass handed to him by Phil in 2004 & Tim/Manu were still better offensive options until the '07-'08 (yeah, Tim was still the better option in 07 when Tony won the Finals MVP).

In 2011, they had OJ/Battier/General Vasquez to provide perimeter scoring punch. Now it's basically Gasol shooting FT line jumpers to the tune of 50%. When the Spurs start making it rain, those points are going to pile up......especially now that Bonner/Neal are joining the party along w/ Kawhi/Green......if Manu starts stroking them w/ consistence that might be over real quick. The only way the Grizz are going to be able to slow down the Spurs is by getting to the line (i.e. Z-Bo)& causing havoc defensively but they aren't really the most athletic team of the bunch. 3>2

In 2011 the Spurs weren't getting as many good look nor were the role player stepping up aside of Gary Neal (the reason why the Spurs were will to part w/ George Hill). It also isn't about them making it but rather being a treat & keeping the defense honest to prevent the defense from collapsing in the paint. It was Battier that canned in a dagger 3 that sealed the Game 1 in the 2011 series. From then on, the Spurs were hesitant to help & Z-Bo went to work.

Tony Got everything going. When he is on.. the offense clicks. Memphis did a terrible job of allowing the corner 3... and that's what the Spurs exactly thrive on.

Spurs defense did a great job. Duncan and ZBO and send pass defense help right away. Allowed Gasol to just shoot and score, but Spurs looked okay in allowing that strategy if that kept zbo quiet.

Duncan didn't play well offensively.

What's up w/ Grizzlies and Game 1's?

Spurs need to guard Pondexter much better going forward... the only real 3 point threat

If you make them think instead of react, they are bound to blow coverages. This is where they miss Battier.

they lost Game 1 vs OKC then won 4 straight. It will be interesting to see if they can solve the Spurs.

there was one where bonner set a high screen for parker, then immediately raced eight feet forward to set another one for parker at the free throw line. can't remember seeing that used before.

You know how he hands the ball to Tim (or Splitter)then sprints down the baseline & curls around the baskets and come out through the opposite baseline. The defense is at the mercy of Tim since if the defense wants to deny Tony they would have to help meaning there is someone not being checked thus Tim/Splitter uses their height to spot the open man for a lay-up when they cut or spot of for 3. Otherwise, Tony finds himself facing the basket w/ the defender trailing him, thus can go to work immediately while the defense is already scrambling.

Z-Bo ain't quick on his feet to take advantage of Tim's declining foot speed. Z-Bo is basically trying to shoot over defender who is much longer & knows how to play positional D. His best bet is to stay outside & shoot those baseline jumpers.
