"UCLA Basketball 2013-14...The Alford Era...."

The first big story of the season will be who is going to play the point for UCLA...

although 6'8 Kyle Anderson played the point in high school...and was Drew's back up last year...it's not a given he will get the gig. He doesn't play offense at a very fast pace..but we shall see..

our top recruit...Zack Lavine....can maybe play the point... which would mean....but even if he can't...

we know he can dunk..

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/highschool-prep-rally/ucla-commit-zach-lavine-crazy-behind-back-dunk-152338967.html

not sure you can keep this kid out of the starting line up doing stuff like that...

The Wears are decent enough players (as in they should get minutes) but I just don't see where we generate offense outside of Jordan Adams. Having a low post presence would let us run some stuff off that and get our shooters (Adams and the Alford kid).

I don't really know what to expect of Kyle Anderson... dude needs to learn how to score at least a little.

I don't have huge expectations for this year but we should at least be a tourney team.

I don't see him as a point.

I still got faith in his game though.

Sidebar: I was just on youtube trying to find some Kyle highlights from UCLA, couldn't find much. But I did find a video of Jon Crispin talking about him. Lol.....I remember playing against him and his brother in high school. They lit us the fuck up. They were my coaches nephews too. Smh. But then I remembered he transferred from Penn State to UCLA and got no tick. Dummy..

are you still in the stage where you still feel the need o pretend he's who you wanted?

You happy that Pitino made overtures & all but said he'd come if he won post-tourney but y'all couldn't wait two weeks to instead snag *Steve Alford*?

A guy whose only buzz in Westwood since it was announced six weeks ago has been an old sexual assault issue one of his players had at Iowa or his buyout from New Mexico?

Looking like another Season On The Brink for the Bruins.

lol... He was a fine pick for the coach.... Not mad at all. I didn't know he was even available...had I....he would have been one of my top 5 choices...

his teams play with energy and effort on both ends of the court.... and he's made the tournament with a lot less talent than he's gonna have at his disposal at UCLA..

we will be a solid top 20 team NEXT SEASON..his first year...no question... There are at least 5 NBA players on this team right today..

I don't care about USC basketball, never did, I have & always will be a Temple fan dating back to the Nate Blackwell/early-Chaney days.

Whether UCLA is better than USC in hoops is of no concern, that's the way it should be much like football in reverse unless the big dog drops a dud.

I'd actually like for UCLA to be a real factor again, just so I'd have some local college basketball to watch & maybe catch a game or two up the street at Pauley.

That doesn't mean Dan Guerrero is a good AD or Steve ALOLford was the type of hire UCLA needed to make right now.

>too bad.....gotta pretend football isn't one now either..
>
dawg, UCLA football will never matter, just get over it.

>I'll take our 2 coaches over SCs 2 coaches 8 days a week...

I don't even remember who SC's basketball coach is and I look forward to Lane Kiffin being gone. But that gap is gonna be there on the football side, always & forever, most sensible Bruin fans understand that.

And how hyped y'all got over that 7-4 team that got blown out in their bowl is proof positive of that.

how else should the gap be measured bomb???

y'all national titles with bush and them are null and void behind sanctions...

all that matters..

right today???

UCLA ballers gettin drafted before SC ballers....

this draft...

Next draft...

period...

Datone Jones is holding the LA football flag right now...SC guys are false flaggin...

why do I say false flaggin?????

because these were guys projected to win Heisman trophies...got in the top of the first round...on a team that was supposed to be one of the great college teams ever (I read and heard multiple stories about his year's USC team being potentially a legendary team....NOT...

yet when the Draft comes...Datone Jones goes 2 rounds before Barkley...

SC is NOT a top ranked football program right today..

it's so-called top players are overrated and this draft proved that to be a widely accepted fact....

UCLA's Datone Jones ...off a team that was not expected to do very much this season under a new coach...gets drafted before any USC player...

the former heisman candidate...for qb for the #1 team candidate....former 1st overall draft pick candiate Eric Barkley goes in the 3rd round...

althoug as an aside...I'm liking the Rams picking TJ McDonald and assume he'll be starting..

Starting?????

Datone Jones gonna be starting...

and Jonathan Franklin gonna be in the mix with the Packers..

We run LA...

Well, goddamn, considering USC has more NFL players than any school in the entire country & will be tied for Hall of Fame inducted players once Polomalu goes in.....then you're gonna have to do better than having your first 1st rounder in nearly a decade then four USC guys (each of whom drop due to the aformentioned Kiffin-assisted disaster) go before they heard another Bruin named called.

But congrats on tying SC's worst draft result year in ages with four guys from each, even if one of UCLA's was a punter.

I'd still take Robert Woods, TJ McDonald, Matt Barkley & Khaled Holmes over Datone Jones, Johnathan Franklin, a guard & a punter.

That right, Kiper?

What UCLA player is getting picked over Marquise Lee next April?

Shit, if the rules weren't prohibiting him from entering this year he would have been above Datone Jones.

>period...
>
>Datone Jones is holding the LA football flag right now...

It's quite hilarious how excited you are about getting someone picked in the late first-round, did you puff your chest out about Marcedes Lewis too before he went on to have an NFL career as impressive as UCLA's trophy case over the past century.

SC

You trying to use SC's Heisman trophy hopes (currently at 8 to 1), Long History of First-Rounders (triple digits to maybe ten), National Titles (12 to 0) & the baseless claim that they were supposed to be 'one of the greatest teams ever' this year rather than just being plain-old preseason #1 (a lot to never) to mean something to UCLA's program?

>yet when the Draft comes...Datone Jones goes 2 rounds before
>Barkley...

3 rounds before actually & I'm happy about Chip Kelly taking a flyer on him in the fourth round.

Lot of things had to go wrong outside of just Matt Barkley's skill & play for him to be available at the time the Eagles snagged him.

So you're head coach is another USC Coach & your starting safety is a Trojan too.

Cool. Bradford's got no excuses this year, Rams caught a really bad break with him being the last guy to get a big rookie deal but at least this year lack of weapons shouldn't be cited as often.

>Datone Jones gonna be starting...

is he.....and if so, so?!?

amazing the non-events you're getting hyped about.

again, you would hope so, considering Green Bay's got no running backs for four-five years running since Ahman Green stopped being reliable.

In response to Reply # 8

when they do something wrong.... you're gonna be held accountable by some people..often for foul reasons.

You try to help kids and young adults..then when they do something wrong..the fact that you helped them and were on their side in areas outside of the wrongdoing...you get held accountable by people who have an agenda..

most people with average level intelligence ..and without that type of agenda understand that....

in Alford's case...it certainly didn't stop New Mexico or UCLA from hiring him..and rightfully so. He didn't assault or condone assaulting anyone.... He was just a coach who was looking out for his guy. That's what coaches do...he did nothing illegal..or immoral...Hell Tom Osborne stashed guns for a player and also let Lawrence Phillips play after his assault.. yet he could get elected governor of Nebraska if he ran...

as someone who is associated with a pretty prestigious high school football program....I've had my name and reputation dragged through the mud behind my guys doing really bad stuff. Although it has nothing to do with me...and the vast vast majority of the kids we've had are more than upstanding citizens....when something goes wrong....people look at you questionable...

that's a hazard of the game...all you can do is use the best judgement you can and have thick skin.

he didn't play him because he needed to play him to win. Without him they had one of the best college football teams ever... He played him because he was trying to help him get drafted. He played him because he knew that Lawrence had major issues personally...and him being drafted by the NFL could possibly save his life. That's why he played him...and honestly for those reasons..I'm not mad at Tom Osborne....at all...he looked out for his guys.

but the level he went to looking out for his guys should have at least gotten him the scrutiny that other coaches have gotten....I remember being super pissed because the media portrayed Bobby Bowden as questionable, but acted like Tom Osborne was a fukkin saint...

although I respect Osborne's reasons for playing LP.... his assault on that female was something honestly that should have disqualified him from being a part of that team.....but I'll tell you...that's a tough call for a coach..

You got a guy who going to college..or going to the pros is a life or death scenario for him and his family.... What level of crime can he committ for you to take that 1 shot away from him .

truuuuuuuust me....

that is a very fukked up situation to be in...... it's not an easy call to make at all.....

all that to say.... Steve Alford ain't do shit..or be in a position that most coaches are in today on many levels of sport.... It's the type of thing that unless the coach committed a crime or went over a certain morality line..you got to give them a pass because trust me..if you are in positions like that..decisions are a lot less cut and dry than you'd think.

he needs to bulk up but the thing that jumps out is that he's not knocking down wide up jumpers....he's pulling up with guys right in his face and splashing on em from deep..

he'll give us nice depth right away and in a couple years teaming with Zach LaVine in the back court is gonna be a nice combo

He'd be a solid pick up...he's a project but he's long and athletic..lots of upside...

http://www.bruinsnation.com/2013/5/29/4376366/pf-wannah-bail-possible-transfer-to-ucla

According to rumors, UCLA is currently looking at a transfer that could have an impact on the incoming class this fall. While a point of concern may be the point guard, perhaps new coach Steve Alford is trying to prove he can recruit impact players to UCLA.
Apparently the player he is courting is Wannah Bail, who is looking to transfer from Texas Tech. No, this is not a joke. That is really his name. Bail is a power forward from Texas who was a three star recruit out of high school. When he enrolled at Texas Tech, he wound up leaving after a semester. Why? Academic Issues. Or, if you believe other stories, maybe he couldn't get along with Billy Gillespie, since he's apparently run off 15 players from his program. Either way, he has been cleared by the NCAA and is now available.
Bail is 6'9, 205 pounds (in high school, he may weigh more now, but he doesn't have a bio up on Texas Tech's website) and is very raw. He is taking visits to UCLA today, then over to Southern Cal, and then off to Miami.
You can check out some of his highlights here and here. He did not play last year for Texas Tech, so I am not sure if he will have to sit out a year, or if he will have to sit on the bench behind two Wears and Tony Parker. He does defend and rebound, so it would be an interesting competition.

Report: One-time Texas Tech signee Wannah Bail verbally commits to UCLA

Raphielle Johnson

May 31, 2013, 4:22 PM EDT

6-8 power forward Wannah Bail was one of the top prospects in the 2012 class in Texas, with his athleticism and ability on the defensive end making him a very intriguing player for then-Texas Tech head coach Billy Gillispie.

But things didn’t work out for Bail in Lubbock, resulting in his departure from the program within weeks of his arrival on campus. Gillispie would be relieved of his duties soon thereafter for issues regarding his treatment of players, with Chris Walker taking over as interim head coach.

And nearly one year after his first, albeit brief, college basketball experience Bail has verbally committed to attend UCLA as first reported by texasboysbasketball.com.

After leaving Texas Tech Bail spent some time at the Canarias Basketball Academy, and he also worked out with John Lucas for part of the spring.

The addition of Bail, who would become the fourth newcomer headed to UCLA (two, Noah Allen and Zach Levine, committed while Ben Howland was the head coach), gives the Bruins added depth inside.

UCLA went through much of last season with a three-man rotation in the paint, with the Wear twins (David and Travis) and Kyle Anderson receiving the majority of the minutes and freshman Tony Parker dealing with injuries and inconsistency for much of the year.

Adding Bail would give UCLA an athletic piece who can help them on the defensive end of the floor. He’s a bit raw offensively, but head coach Steve Alford and his staff (which includes Ed Schilling, who is highly respected for his skill development work) can bring Bail along in that area.

Alford bagged a 5-star recruit in Isaac Hamilton...UTEP signee who bounced...has to sit out this season because of bitch ass tim Floyd....but still a nice get..

http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/eye-on-college-basketball/23629833/utep-signeed-isaac-hamilton-admitted-to-ucla

UTEP signee Isaac Hamilton has been admitted to UCLA and will eventually become a part of Steve Alford's program, a source confirmed to CBSSports.com on Friday.

Hamilton was a McDonald's All-American during his senior year of high school.

He's ranked 16th nationally in the Class of 2013 by 247Sports.com.

This development was first reported by BruinSportsReport.

Hamilton signed a national letter of intent with UTEP last November but decided over the summer that he'd rather play basketball closer to his home in California because, he said, he wanted to be near his ailing grandmother. But UTEP coach Tim Floyd refused to release Hamilton from the letter of intent, and a waiver to be released from the letter of intent was denied last week. Consequently, Hamilton will not be eligible to play at UCLA this season. His college career will begin in 2014-15.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaab/2013/10/02/college-basketball-countdown-no-28-ucla/2904319/

USA TODAY Sports' Scott Gleeson counts down to the start of the season, breaking down the projected field of 68.

The first word: Steve Alford is well aware of the weight-of-the-world expectations he faces as the new coach of the winningest college basketball program.

The UCLA coach remedies the massive pressure with a reassuring thought: It's just basketball.

It might be the same game Alford played as a star for Bobby Knight's dominant Indiana teams in the 1980s, and the same game he coached for eight seasons at Iowa and six at New Mexico — all but two of them ending with postseason trips. But make no mistake, basketball is a whole lot bigger now.

The Bruins have remarkably high standards, evidenced by the firing of former coach Ben Howland, who struggled to advance talented UCLA squads in recent NCAA tournaments but had three consecutive Final Four appearances (2006-08) during his 10-year tenure.

While it's clear success must come quickly, the good news is Alford inherits a team with enough talent to contend for a Pac-12 title. Shabazz Muhammad left for the NBA, but the returning cast of Jordan Adams, Kyle Anderson and the 6-10 Wear twins provides ample talent and experience to lead the charge in 2013-14.

2012-13 in review: 25-10 overall (13-5 Pac-12), lost in second round of NCAA tournament.

Tournament projection: At-large bid, No. 7 seed.

Coach's corner: "I'm humbled and blessed by this opportunity, but I'm not going to change the system of how I do things because of the tremendous expectations. We're working to get better and trying to set these kids up in life after basketball. None of that changes just because there's an address change. I can't take a job and reinvent who I am. That being said, championships are what you come to UCLA for when you're a player. That's why I'm here as a coach." — Alford, whose contract has an unusually big buyout clause under which each side is obligated to pay $10.4 million for backing out of the deal in the first three years.

Star watch: UCLA returns three of five starters from last season and six of the team's eight primary contributors. Adams (15.3 ppg) and Anderson (9.7 ppg, 8.6 rpg, 3.5 apg) appear poised for strong sophomore campaigns. If he can avoid injury, Adams can average more than 20 points without Muhammad hogging touches. And Anderson should thrive in Alford's motion offense. Twin towers Travis Wear (10.9 ppg, 5.2 rpg) and David Wear (7.1 ppg, 5.0 rpg) will be relied on heavily. Junior guard Norman Powell (6.1 ppg) returns as one of the team's most effective lockdown defenders and three-point shooters. Freshman Wanaah Bail, a 6-9 forward from Houston, could be a factor in the frontcourt if he's granted eligibility.

STARTING FIVE: Top story lines in 2013-14

X-Factor: Tony Parker. The sophomore center has lost 25 pounds, according to Alford, after struggling to stay in shape and establish any form of consistency last season.

Team strength/weakness: The Bruins return 66.5% of their scoring production, 78% of their rebounding production and 89% of their blocked shots. Still, losing pass-first point guard Larry Drew II creates a huge void and will force newcomers to step up. Freshmen Bryce Alford and Zach LaVine will fight for the starting floor general spot, although the 6-5 LaVine can play both guard positions.

Conference outlook: The Pac-12 appears poised for a resurgence after a season in which five teams made the NCAA tournament, and three others reached the NIT. Though Arizona is the favorite, the league race will be intriguing with five NCAA contenders behind the Wildcats: Colorado, UCLA, Oregon, Stanford, Arizona State and California.

34. "4-star recruit Jonah Bolden commits to UCLA"
In response to Reply # 0

UCLA is moving quickly up the class of 2014 list.... another solid front court player

http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/eye-on-college-basketball/24371329/addition-of-jonah-bolden-means-ucla-is-loaded-for-201415

When USC and UCLA had coaching changes back in the spring, it's not a stretch to say that Andy Enfield received more attention than Steve Alford in southern California.

Enfield was bringing excitement and up-tempo offense to USC, while there were some questions whether Alford could consistently recruit elite-level players to the Bruins.

After eight months on the job, it seems Alford has answered most questions about his ability to recruit.

On Tuesday morning, Alford landed top-50 recruit Jonah Bolden, one of the best recruits still left on the board. Bolden chose the Bruins over Indiana, USC, SMU and others. Assistant coach David Grace made major inroads with Bolden when Grace visited with Bolden's father in Australia.

The Bruins then sealed the deal when Bolden took an official visit over the weekend.

Bolden, a 6-foot-9 forward from Australia, is playing at Findlay Prep (Nev.) this season. He emerged as a coveted recruit at Adidas Nations, and is ranked No. 49 in the 247Sports Composite.

Getting Bolden's pledge means UCLA will have one of the best incoming frontcourts in the country next season. Bolden joins five-star prospect Kevon Looney and four-star 7-footer Thomas Welsh in the class, in addition to Gyorgy Goloman, who is likely a project at the five spot.

Putting Bolden alongside Looney and Welsh gives Alford a little bit of everything in the frontcourt next season. Bolden can make shots from the perimeter, but is long and skilled at the forward position. Looney is one of the best rebounders in the class, and is a very good inside-outside offensive player. Meanwhile, Welsh can finish inside and is also a solid face-up player.

With the Bruins losing David and Travis Wear next season, and sophomore Kyle Anderson likely to go pro after his sophomore season, Alford needed to make an immediate impact with his recruiting class. He's accomplished that – and that's not even counting the addition of former UTEP signee Isaac Hamilton, a five-star prospect from the class of 2013.

Throw in the likely returns of big-time scorer Jordan Adams and star freshman Zach LaVine – along with several role players – and Alford has the Bruins positioned to for a potential top-10 preseason ranking heading into next season.

The attention is certainly on Westwood now.

system...

they were better with Howland who preferred a more half court set style of offense....

I'm noticing that the fact that Tony Parker actually has some post offensive game...if he stays out of foul trouble..Alford has confidence in him late in the game..

I'm thinking we are at the time now for Wannah Bail to start cutting into the Wear's minutes....he's much more explosive down lown, and a real shot blocker on defense...

Don't get me wrong they are pretty skilled and seem like good kids, but their style of play isn't really conductive to winning ball. They're stretch big men who don't really shoot 3s (they're best at long 2s which are still the most inefficient shots and don't really space the floor since the college 3 point line is shorter), and on the other end they're fine position defenders but don't offer much as far as rim protection or being dominant rebounders.

Bail might be more limited in skill, but he at least brings some shotblocking (desperately lacking on this team) and on offense will pretty much just finish and get out the way... offensive firepower is not really a problem on this team. And Parker has made some nice progress this season but is still so raw on the defensive side as far as making any impact.

he just needs time on the court and right now...the Wears aren't really giving us much if anything.

For making Enfield pay for his preseason comments. He really made it a point to run USC off the court and the team did it with class, lol.

A lot of our weaknesses got exposed in this game. When they went small, we had no big to punish them in thine post. Tony Parker keeps reaching in instead of moving and getting into foul trouble.

But Kyle Anderson has really stepped it up in terms of scoring, he was our go to guy down the stretch. I like the chemistry Alford has established too. We are definitely a very good tam but I don't see us being elites unless TP or someone else steps up big time.

if fukkin Utah would stop missing free throws and turning the ball over in OT against Arizona we'd be tied for 1st in the Pac 12 right today...

losing Anderson...Adams....and the Wear Twins..

we got a 3 guard rotation of Bryce...LaVine....and Powell

Tony Parker will be our. center...

and Wannah Bail and Noah Allen will be joined at forward by the 5 star Power forward in the country Kevin Looney..4 star C/PF Thomas Welsh...4 star pf Jonah Bolden...and center GG coleman...

Next year's team will have an inside offensive and defensive presence that this team simply doesn't have with the Wears playing as much as they do...

Alford's making some big gains in the recruiting not just for next year..but getting commits for the 2015 class..

we will be more than fine...

they can give some matchup problems. The thing Im worried about is the toughness.

If just for one game these dudes can go HAM, they can win that game.

76. "So looks like Kyle Anderson and Zach LaVine are gone"
In response to Reply # 0

I figured Kyle would..but I really think Zach is making a big mistake... He showed flashes this year, but he's been in a pretty big slump for a couple of months.

With Kyle leaving Zach would be able to basiclly run the point guard for us next year, and would easily improve his draft stock..which has been falling pretty steady during this slump...

either way..we'll be straight.... Bryce Alford showed he could run the point for us for at least a season before Holiday comes in .... only problem now is that we'll need a back up point guard....

one thought would be to convert Norman Powell over to the point..and still bring Bryce off the bench...that would open up a spot in the starting line up for Jonah Bolden to join Kevin Looney and Tony Parker on the front line...with Powell and Jordan Adams in the back court...

that's actually not a bad line up at all.

UCLA will lose Kyle Anderson and Zach LaVine early to the NBA.

Anderson's father told ESPN prior to the start of the season that his son would leave school after this year. He told ESPN following the loss on Thursday night to Florida that Anderson will meet with the staff, but that the plan hasn't changed.

LaVine's father, Paul, told the Los Angeles Daily News that he will forgo his remaining eligibility. Bruins coach Steve Alford told ESPN.com that he has yet to be informed of a decision from LaVine or his family.

UCLA was knocked out of the NCAA tournament by Florida on Thursday night in the Sweet 16.

Both players are considered potential first-round picks by NBA executives.

Anderson is a 6-foot-9 point guard who was extremely productive this past season as a sophomore under new coach Alford. Anderson averaged 14.6 points, 8.8 rebounds and 6.5 assists per game.

NBA scouts have varying opinions on Anderson due to his uniqueness as a player, but he's considered a late first-rounder by most that were contacted by ESPN.

LaVine is more about potential. He showed flashes while coming off the bench this season as a freshman, but was inconsistent. NBA executives are enamored with his upside, but LaVine scored a total of nine points in his final five games and was 0-for-10 from long range. He averaged 9.4 points per game as a freshman.
