He had an entire training camp to supplant Sanchez AND complete series in games plus practices. He couldn't beat out Mark Sanchez. The whole doomed from the start narrative is tired false for one reason. Coaches want to win. No coach will keeps a player on the bench that will help the team. He had every chance to prove he could lead the team in practice and he failed. If the Jets started Tebow then Rex Ryan would be out of a job right now.
He's not beating out Henne, Gabbert or any QB in the league. Give me Rex Grossman over Tebow any day of the week.

He was clearly brought in with the expectation that he could start if Sanchez struggled. Remember, he chose NYC because he thought he could beat out Sanchez. He proved through training camp and practices during the season that he couldn't beat out Sanchez. That's why they started Greg over him. If you really want to keep it 10", he wasn't the second best QB on the roster.
Mark Sanchez is the one who was sabotaged. They take away all his weapons and then give him a glorified fullback with a cult following as his backup. Nerfing the defense didn't help either.
