this year was an abbiration....

56 playoff appearnces in 61 years..... we can take a year like this.

We'll be back...

no doubt..

we always come back.... Cap retiring....Earv retiring with the HIV.....Shaq leaving..

we came back from all that shit..

and we will again..

You will never have to beg players to come play in los angeles for the greatest American sports franchise in modern history....

it sells itself...

we need to strip the roster in a major way....sign dwight..or sign and trade dwight..it don't matter..either way we come up...

Kobe will be back...we get young players....

we'll be competeing for a conference title in 2 years.....no question.

and if he does want to be in LA...we build with him...

it's a win win..

if he walks...we got cap space.... peep the free agents this year and next..

it's a win win win for us.... whatever happens...we straight.

we're not Cleveland or Orlando where your star walks and it takes years and years to rebuild... history shows how the Lakers build and rebuild..... we stay winnin..or bout to be winnin...shit don't change.

What, with everyone from the so-called expertz to the dickheads on this board suggesting that the team is fucked every which way but loose next season with all of the expensive salaries

Unless, say the "real Laker fans," they get rid of-- er, I mean, "amnesty" Bean

Then, and only then, will all of what ills this team will be cured

If only

But hopefully Mitch has figured out a plan of action and will make it happen. If it means we lose some fan favorites, so be it...

... and I'm not sure that bringing in Feel (as the fans have clamored) will help...

EDIT: I DO know that we need to find MOAR athleticism... somewhere, somehow, some way...

Kobe, Pau, and Ron all come off the books next summer, and Nash's contract becomes attractive for cap purposes.

So, I mean, everything he typed is rhetorical bullshit that looks nice to a hater but falters under the weight of it's own stupidity.

For some reason, you believe Steve Nash is attractive, while half of Laker nation wants him to retire RIGHT NOW, lol...

Your team is washed up fam.

Good luck with competing with Mark Cuban for free agents in 2014...

...and you aren't the only historic team with money free in 2014, Boston and the Bulls will have some money to burn and are both better coached.

Nash has two years left. Got that?

Next year is one year. Summer of 2014 means he'll be in the last year of his contract.

Nobody would trade for the actual PLAYER.
Teams would trade for the EXPIRING CONTRACT.

9 million coming off the books for a rebuilding team or a team about to blow it up or simply trying to get under the cap to have free agent money for 2015 is pretty attractive.

Steve won't be attractive, but his money coming off the books at the end of that year will be. That value increases at the trade deadline, when such teams would only have him for a 3-4 months at most.

I find it strange that this even has to be explained. Expiring deals have value and always have.

In the next 2 offseasons...

This one and 2014

teams will look to rebuild and strengthen their teams in the middle and at pg, which happens to be one of the deepest talented fields.

Almost EVERYONE has a decent to good PG and there are superstar guards currently.

Who the fuck has contracts into 2016 and beyond that needs to get rid of dead weight where an expiring would be attractive?

The Bulls have Boozer till 2015. We would have entertained taking an expiring on him NOW so that we would have been freed up, but we know we have 3 years of big contract to move.

Again, who has money tied into 2017 that will look at Nash's contract and say:

In the next 2 season, we won't look at drafting a pg or free agency, we will just wait two years to trade for Nash since he is coming off the books.

You are delusional.

Nobody wants Nash or 9 million.

The Lakers don't even want it, lol.

And lol at most of the replies in a Lakers 2013 off-season post not even dealing with the off-season, yall are on some...well can we cancel this off-season and ffwd to next off-season pls thx

Mitch gambled on a short window with the players we got and made sure we had a massive window of cash open for 2014.

Whether or not we can get somehing for Steve at that point is immaterial because we'll STILL have a ton of money coming off the books to sign at least one max player at that point.

And yes, you're delusional if you don't think there won't be a market for 9 million coming off the books in any season. If not, big whoop, it's 9 million of the books for us a year later after we locked up D12 and a second max player, if not a 3rd.

And uh... we've ALL seen what Chi does with it's max FA money and we're not them.

2014 free agency class + Dwight. I strongly feel Nash gives it one more go around and then calls it quits which frees up 10 more million in 2014.

Based on that, i would assume Kupchak looks to move Pau's expiring for some youth for the future without hindering our financial ability to sign a 2nd max contract. That's the only major change I see for next year (amnestying Ron is the other but still not sure if we would actually do that).

As it stands, for 2013...re-sign Dwight, get healthy, and go into next season with some continuity. This season was definitely tough and a lot of things went wrong...but it's over and done with now. Lick our wounds and move on.

Kobe being Kobe again. I'm actually down for tanking next season (if we still have that pick lol). We just have to expect and endure some lean years. I'm not sure why that's such a shocking concept for everyone (including haters) to grasp. But we were pretty bad post Magic. Getting Dwight resigned is a nice start.

Then won 48 in 94-95 and 53 in 95-96 before Shaq came.

Yeah, there will be some lean years, but we'll have to see how this currently constructed Ownership/Front office reacts to the situation. I'm in agreement that I don't think Phil is an easy fix to the situation. It's like everyone forgot the end of his era in LA; lack of athleticism still a major problem for the Lakers.

who else should the Lakers target to play with Dwight Howard in the future? Talented dude, but I think it's clear at this point he can't be the focal point for offense.

twice in their teams history...

If they have made the playoffs 66 years out of 71 years of their existance...

How is it ...to use your word "dellusional"...... how is it dellusional to say the Lakers will be back on top...soon.

In fact...to say otherwise..you are believing something tht has never EVER...ever happened. The Lakers have never fallen off..ie multiple trips in a row to the lottery....

even when we are down, it's just a couple of years until a premiere...or should I say the premier free agent either signs with us or trade to us..

through history...that is the ONLY thing that has happened with the Lakers..

It's not dellusional to say that the sun is coming up in the east tommorow....lol.

you should worry about the Celtics falling off.

I mean he DID trade for Chris Paul AND Dwight Howard. He bumbled the coach situation no doubt, but he made two trades for 2 top 5 players in the NBA...

He hasn't earned the criticism that he's been getting...yet. He might.

The coach thing was really, really bad.

But the two trades were great.

So, we'll see what shakes out. Right now, he has to re-sign Mitch and D12 and show us what else he can do. Period. Nobody will ever be Dr. Buss but he has a legacy to live up to, and he's already shown he's not afraid to make a big splash.

He didn't trade Bynum until he was getting D12 back...a lot of Laker fans gave the dude flack for never wanting to trade Bynum, and he did it.

He made a move for Chris Paul.

He fucked up the coaching thing horribly, so I'm gonna say right now...he's evened out. Might be more good than bad right now, but it doesnt matter. He's probably got a huge, unearned ego and doesn't listen to Jeanie (btw I firmly believe Jeanie should have Jim's job), but we'll see what happens.

basically have to play on a lottery team in 2013 (especially if they amnesty pau) will tempt him to just bounce to dallas/houston for less money
i wonder if the idea of the lakers amnestying kobe might come back up because dwight doesn't want to waste a yr of his prime waiting for a 36 yr old to come back from a career shortening injury in 2014
the whole point of getting 4 HOFers was to be title contenders (favorites) these 2 yrs
that's the assumption dwight was working with when he went to LA
now that that's basically dead i don't think it's guaranteed he's going to be willing to wait for a "rebuild" and getting hypothetical superstars in 2014
that's why he left orlando (lakers are a better org obvs but still)

It makes ZERO sense to do it.

Cut Kobe's 30 mil off the books next year, then you're at 68 mil if Dwight resigns (I'll say he's getting paid $20 mil next year, dunno what the actual number is but that's still about right).

That's STILL 10 mil over the hard cap, and luxury tax-able. So why would the Lakers do it? They signed a $3 billion TV deal last year, money's not much of an issue. It'd be a PR nightmare and wouldn't give them cap flexibility.

If anything, Dwight would push for D'Antoni to be fired. Dwight could hate Kobe all he wants but it makes absolutely no sense to amnesty Kobe...not financially, not publicity-wise, nothing.

Ok...
-41 Mil over the soft cap right now.
-29 mil in tax penalties.
2013-2014 contract obligations:
Kobe
Pau
Nash
MWP (player option)
Blake
Hill
Duhon (player option but can be bought out at a 3rd of his contract)
Total...about 76 mil

Scenario 1: Keeping Dwight
-Resign Dwight at Pau numbers (about 19 mil a year for whatever the max is).
-Aggressively seek to trade Pau: Lakers will need depth and can take back 2-3 contracts for what Pau makes. For the right team (fringe contender or lotto team looking for vets and has young assets) it might work.

There was some talk about Minny. Tho Kevin Love likely won't be involved, trying to net Shved, D-Wills, Roy's expiring deal and Pekovic-resigned would work. They get a legit C/PF to put next to Dwight who's solid, a young asset that's underperformed but might improve in a better org, a promising PG/SG and some cap relief.

Maybe ATL...for Josh Smith and a resigned Kyle Korver and a future first rounder. Josh next to Dwight might rejuvinate both and Kyle provides 3pt shooting to assist that. ATL gets to rent Pau for a yr next to Al(moving him to PF) and 19 mil more off the books in 2014.

Maybe Denver...Iggy, Miller and Mozgov would get it done. Some PG stability (though he's old as hell, he's still effective and cheap), Iggy (resigned, cheaper but longer) gives them perimeter help until Kobe gets back and after Kobe leaves...allows MWP to be amnestied also. Mozgov is a throw in and at besst he's a decent compliment to Dwight. At worst he's a 2yr deal at 3-4 mil with a team option for yr 2.

Maybe Chicago...Taj, Teague and Rip's expiring deal and a future first. They get a pick (Not Cha's), a young PF to put next to Dwight on a slightly overpriced deal but not worse than MWP, a young PG to grow and cap space as Rip's 5 mil is gone next summer. This allows the Bulls to place Pau next to Noah for a yr, Amnesty Boozer's 15 mil and go after Al Jeff or a combo of FA's to help and have some cap for next summer too (if they don't resign Pau).

Maybe Clev...Andy and Speights (resigned) would get it done and give the Lakers big depth. Maybe throw in a pick and Ellington or Waiters for youth depending on who the Cavs draft this summer. Clev gets an offensive capable big to rent next to TT and Kyrie has some pressure off him. If they get Otto too, team would be fringe playoff if they get the right role players.

-Amnesty MWP...Cap relief. Depending on which trade they get for Pau, could possibly save 12 mil and still have depth and get younger.

-Explore resigning Earl Clark...but reasonably. 5-6 mil a yr for 3 yrs should be ok. Player option for yr 3.

Scenario 2: Losing Dwight
-Only way to salvage this would be a sign and trade, otherwise it's time to re-tool. Barring a trade for Dwight, still look to move Pau but for cheap young talent and cap relief. Amnesty MWP. Resign Earl Clark...same type deal. Talk Steve Nash into retirement (No Dwight and Kobe's curtain call = no last run). Deal with a shitty season, let Earl and whomever you net for Pau develop and draft well since LA owns their 2014 pick in what should be a stacked draft. Maybe request one in return for Pau too so they get 2 picks next summer. Then take whatever cap space from Kobe retiring, Nash retiring and MWP's amnesty and try to net a few star FA's in 2014 (Paul George, Favors)...depending on the timing of things, maybe try to net a 2013 FA though that would obviously affect next yr's draft position.

Just some ideas...either way, it's not all bad in LA but they might need a few yrs to recover back to top 4 seed status.

Why would anyone at this point trade for Pau who is coming off the books on 2014, when 80% of the league has player up in 2014 as well (which is why the FA market is going to be epic)

I see 2 seasons ago when folk were like trade him and he in fact was traded to get CP3...

Clearly Pau is regressing and you will more than likely see a combination of teams trying to tank for Jabari the Canadian kid and that Kentucky class as well.

How would it benefit the Bulls to trade for Gasol if we don't give back Boozer. I can't see a team trading for Gasol at this point and not trying to stick the Lakers with an albatross contract going into 2016 or so...like the Knicks saying, we will give you JR and Felton but you also have to take Amare if you want to give us Gasol and Metta or Nash.

Why would a young team trade talent and contracts already expiring this season or 2014 for the Spainard.

Most teams have cap money now or will definitely have it 2014.

Now I can see Toronto with Gay and Bargnani possibly being a place for Pau that has some talent they could trade back because of the other bad contracts they have...but eh

summer. The 2014 FA class is not as strong as 2013 (unless bron, wade and bosh opt out). Plus the luxury tax rules change so teams will be looking to save money to not have to pay that higher tax.

And Pau's not washed up. He has at least 2 good season's left in him. On a young team, he's a vet to help them grow. On a fringe contender like the Bulls he adds to the equation (he's like a 7ft Boozer but a better passer and shot blocker). And JR's cheap ass would love to move taj, amnesty booz, sign a BETTER guy for similar money or slightly cheaper than Booz, get a young cheap but promising backup and let Pau walk to net that 19 mil in cap space. Booz + Pau = 34 mil off the cap. When Booz and Taj were gonna be a 23-24 mil hit every year for the next 3 seasons. You trade Taj, Amnesty booz, let Pau walk after a season and sign two younger/better players for a combined 20-23 mil, you've upgraded while not hitting the lux tax and possibly cutting a portion of the cap.

Considering Luol is coming off the books in 2014

They could just realize that Boozer is just as if not more tradeable than Gasol and shop him to a younger team looking for interior help.

Gasol and his 19 million is cool and all, but Thibs won't be able to do shit with Pau, be real.

I understand HOW it can work, but how many teams are at or over the cap that won't be home free in 2014 anyway.

all WE have to do is amnesty Boozer and 2014 we have 30 million freed up just off Deng and Boozer alone

Im still upset about tonights game and the way this season ended. Im mad I lost my cool. Im sorry for letting my team and our fans down when

of our team salary.

http://www.hoopsworld.com/los-angeles-lakers-team-salary

we'll keep Meeks, he's only 1.5 mil next year. let's say we resign Earl Clark to a deal that pays him like 3-4 mil/yr...that's about 93 mil. and that's assuming Metta opts out, we buy Duhon out, and we let Jamison, Sacre, Morris and Ebanks all leave.

93 million for just 8 players...we still have to fill out the roster. a team salary that high means we wont be handing out any contracts larger than the vet minimum or the 1.5 mil we gave Meeks, which severly limits the amount of talent that we can acquire in free agency.

what does all this mean? it means financially i don't see how it could possibly makes sense to keep Pau and his 19 mil.

We're one season away from having a bucket of money to throw around.
It makes perfect sense to keep Pau and his 19 mil, unless a sweetheart deal for his expiring contract comes around.... and the earliest that would come is the trade deadline.

There's absolutely no sense in angling for a quick fix for a team this flawed with that much money on the line one year away from becoming a major free agent player for the first time since 96.

Kwame Brown...

No more fumbling the ball away...no more soft left handed runners to the basket...

Now ...

a sign and trade with Houston really doesn't make sense....we got 1 guy under contract after this coming season, and that dude will probably retire at that point, Nash...

I would have brought back Earl Clark though if it was for the amount of dough he signed for...but whatever...

heres where we stand.... if Omar Asik could be put with something else to bring us back a Kevin Love or someone else that's a more marquee player.. I would do something like that...but I wouldn't bring in Asik to keep...he aight..but honestly Jordan Hill would be about as productive..

just glad we ain't locked into Howard....dude's a clown and not worth it.

he's not phil, kill him!

phil would only have coached the team for an un-refusable amount of money and assets. is that the motivation you want? that was the only thing howard had to gain, too. where is the lakers culture here?

d'antoni didn't even put in his own system and he had the lakers playing WAY above .500 once he took any kind of control. yet the guy is being crucified. i am sure greener pastures are in store for him, just like dwight.

The last two offseasons have been a disaster. Hiring Mike Brown was a horrible call from jump.....and then firing him five games into last season and then throwing shade at Phil......and then hiring fuckin Mike D'Antoni. Holy fuck that is a mess.

They signed Steve Nash who is breaking down to go with an aging Kobe, an aging Artest (I'm not calling that dude MWP.....c'mon), an aging Gasol, and a piss poor bench. They flipped Bynum for Howard which at the time was a fuckin WIN. It still is really. Either way they'd still be fucked.

Dwight Howard was never a good fit to begin with but can you really blame him for not wanting to be part of this disfunctional Lakers team. Jim Buss is fuckin up. Focus on the real problem here.

Kyrie as an RFA is a super duper longshot, Bron, too. You never know what sort of shit gets cooked up though, especially between players. Forced trades and so forth. The Lakers and Celtics are alike in that they think outside the box and are not afraid to absolutely fuck over the other team where they can get away with it.

This is going to be a pretty deep draft. Even if we couldn't get Wiggins, there are some quality cats in the top 10. Thoughts?

Let Kobe take his time coming back.
Evaluate Pau as a building block going forward, or as trade bait.

And as far as 2014 goes who exactly is going to be available besides Bron? Because I doubt he comes here. It's been hyped up as a big FA class but when i checked it out all i saw were old dudes and Melo. So getting a good draft spot next year is essential IMO. Then 2015 looks more intriguing with FA's

One lottery year...get Kobe and Pau to come back at a discount, sign 2 studs or a stud + complements, plus a lotter player in a deep draft....this has gotta be the year to tank.

they have hard decisions to make so management has to seize control right here and now. if they are going i a direction, move in it fast. that likely means cutting ties with nash immediately. everything else kind of works itself at worst, with kobe, pau and metta all being in the final year of their respective deals. of course in pau's case, you'd have to look at options that might give you something for him. there are a couple teams with cap space left or junk contracts to send back that are also expiring plus futures.

the holdup is their cable money but the contracts are already signed, so fuck em is how i would feel about it. still, i dunno, the financial temptation to put nash, pau and whatever percentage of kobe they get out there for a middling season is kind of major.

if i were them, i would move pau for futures and no commitment beyond this year (he would help the cavs immensely, they have room), try to get toronto or phoenix to take nash for free or just buy him out (now or after the season, his preference) and do whatever with MWP.

the tank won't be popular, but neither will another 7/8 finish. bite the bullet, get a good pick, take your time with kobe's recovery and then regroup next summer. pick in town, kobe at a reasonable term (if at all) and cap space to spare.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

because of a Tim Duncan, or if you think the Cavs tanked to get a Lebron/Wade/Melo that draft.

But what if we got a fucking Kwame? Or a Bogut? Or anything else that wasn't even all-star level? Then we'd just look dumb as shit.

the risk isn't that there won't be a good player this year. the risk is that you tank and the balls don't give you access to that good player.

http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/nba/story/_/id/9460382/chris-kaman-los-angeles-lakers-agree-one-year-deal-sources-say

The Los Angeles Lakers have agreed to terms with free agent center Chris Kaman on a one-year deal, according to sources with knowledge of the deal.

Financial specifics of the contract weren't immediately known.

Sources told ESPN.com that the Lakers pressed hard to complete a deal with Kaman over the weekend to ensure they have a quality starting center in the wake of Dwight Howard's departure, without impacting their projected 2014 salary-cap space.

Kaman, 31, struggled through an injury-plagued campaign with the Dallas Mavericks this past season, averaging 10.5 points and 5.6 rebounds in 66 games.

the howard discussions. What's talking about seems pretty accurate....

http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/nba/story/_/id/9464504/steve-nash-says-dwight-howard-never-wanted-los-angeles-lakers

LOS ANGELES -- Steve Nash was pragmatic when looking back at what he described as a "disaster" of a season that led to Dwight Howard announcing last week his departure for the Houston Rockets: Howard never wanted to be a Los Angeles Laker in the first place.

"Ultimately, I think Dwight wasn't comfortable here and didn't want to be here and I think if he didn't want to be here, there's no point for anyone in him being here," Nash told "The Mason & Ireland Show" on ESPN LA 710 radio on Tuesday. "So, we wish him the best and move on."

Nash, along with Kobe Bryant, were brought in by the Lakers to join their pitch, trying to persuade Howard to stay in L.A. The two-time league MVP was not hopeful heading into the sit-down with the three-time defensive player of the year.

"Frankly, I thought before the meeting, we didn't really have a chance and I'd like to think that after the meeting we had a chance," Nash said.

Nash was reluctant to divulge specifics from the meeting, but acknowledged that Howard voiced some frustration.

"Dwight had some issues with the season," Nash said. "I think it kind of basically goes with what he said to the media that he never quite felt embraced in L.A. He never quite felt supported. That's basically it. I think in some ways you can read into that what you will, but I think he never quite felt comfortable at home and I don't know if that's anybody's fault."

Howard chose the Rockets over the Lakers on Friday after eliminating the Dallas Mavericks, Golden State Warriors and Atlanta Hawks from consideration.

Nash said Howard had "difficulties assimilating" with the Lakers in his only season with the team mostly because of health issues. Howard was coming off back surgery and also suffered a torn labrum in his shoulder that forced him to miss six games. Nash lumped himself and Pau Gasol as players who also were hampered by lingering injuries that ended up hurting the Lakers.

"When you're talking about three guys you're really going to rely on that aren't themselves, this league is too good ," Nash said.

However, Nash said that X's and O's played just as big a part with Howard as health did.

"He didn't seem like he really wanted to do a pick-and-roll offense, maybe because he had run one in Orlando for so long and he wanted to get in the post more," Nash said.

The 17-year veteran was skeptical that Houston would provide a drastically different offense for Howard to thrive in.

"We'll see," Nash said. "Houston runs a pick-and-roll offense and they are littered with shooting and can maybe space the floor more for him so he can have more opportunities inside with space."

Nash also defended Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni, who called for Howard to run all of those pick-and-rolls and play the part of Amar'e Stoudemire, a plan from Nash and D'Antoni's days in Phoenix together.

"I think he's a bright coach and I think he's got a good touch with the team and I think depending on how this roster rounds out, I don't mind Mike D'Antoni in an underdog situation when everybody's kind of written him off," Nash said.

The veteran point guard is preparing for his charity soccer game on Sunday, the Steve Nash Foundation Showdown at the Salvation Army Red Shield Community Center in Los Angeles. He's also preparing for the Lakers to get back on track through a process he knows could take some time.

"The year came and went with unceremoniously being dumped out of the playoffs and here we are rebuilding," Nash said.

That rebuilding doesn't mean bottoming out, in Nash's opinion.

"We got a lot to play for, to try to make our team into something -- championship or not -- that our fans are proud of and feel good about and can't wait to go see out there on the floor every night and try to beat people," Nash said.

That is, as long as the Lakers can actually stay off the injured list.

"A lot of it depends on health," Nash said. "Am I going to be 100 percent? Which I totally believe I wholeheartedly will be. Is Kobe going to be at what level? I wouldn't put anything past him. Is Pau going to be sitting ready for a full season? And Jordan , after his injury, too. If we're all healthy, and we'll see how we round out the roster and how we come together, who knows what we're capable of. But I definitely start, regardless of any of those answers, finding a way we can be a playoff team and then let's see if we can make something special out of it."

I know that context is a funny word around these here parts, but you might want to read the whole sentence before commenting unless you're one of those cats who is amused with "making people mad" *finger guns*

In other words, he didn't really mean they have no shot

He did essentially LOL!!! at the idea of a pay cut for 2014, though, so...

Laker Spinmaster™ 8000, ACTIVATE!!!!!!!

latimes.com:

>Kobe Bryant opens up about Dwight Howard leaving the Lakers

Lakers star meets with the media to talk about the center's departure to Houston and how the Achilles' tendon injury is healing.

By Melissa Rohlin
July 10, 2013, 6:19 p.m.

When Kobe Bryant recently met with Dwight Howard to convince him to stay with the Lakers, Bryant said his expectations weren't very high.
"I really didn't know what to expect to be honest with you," Bryant said Wednesday at his summer camp in Santa Barbara. "I walked in there and everybody's sitting down and everybody's quiet, I don't know what the hell is going on. Everybody is just really ... serious. It was really pretty funny to me."

Bryant didn't go into detail about what they discussed, but he said they had a "good conversation."

"I don't know if he was leaning one way or another, I don't know," Bryant said of Howard.

When Howard announced that he was going to leave the Lakers, Bryant unfollowed the center on Twitter.

"Listen man, it's just me, that's just how I am," Bryant said. "That's just how I am. I have a hard time following people that want to beat us. Not to say that we're not friends or I don't respect him or anything like that."

In fact, Bryant said he doesn't harbor any resentment against Howard for choosing Houston.

"I'm happy for him," Bryant said. "I've said that before. I'm happy for him. It's important for free agents to make decisions that they feel are best for them, that's really what it's all about. When you're a free agent, you have to make decisions that are best for you, best for your family and best for your brand, whatever it may be. It is what it is."

Not many people decide to leave the Lakers, and Bryant didn't want to guess why the center chose to.

"You really think once a guy decides to go somewhere else I'm going to waste my time trying to figure out why that happened?"

Steve Nash, on the other hand, put some thought into why Howard left, recently telling ESPN 710 that he didn't think he was comfortable with the team.

"Steve is the quintessential teammate," Bryant said. "Steve takes that stuff to heart. I really don't care."

In addition to talking about Howard, Bryant took a few moments to talk about his Achilles' injury and rehabilitation.

"It's good, progressing a bit faster than everybody expected," Bryant said.

Bryant said this injury is different than any challenge he's ever encountered.

"For me, there has been a lot of emotional things that you have to bounce back from, but never something this serious from a physical standpoint."

He said his movement is limited, but he expects to be more active with conditioning in August.

"I could shoot right now, but we just don't trust that the tendon's holding yet. Typically it's four months minimum until it the tendon is holding and it's not going to overstretch. So we'll just wait."

As for what the Lakers need to do to become a championship-caliber team once again, Bryant said it's about plugging holes.

"I feel like length, speed, was an issue for us, being able to cover ground," Bryant said. "If we could get a couple of guys who have that length and the ability to cover ground on the defensive end of the floor, I think we'll be all right."

Considering Bryant's injury and Howard's decision to leave L.A., some people are chalking up next season as a wasted year and looking forward to 2014 when the Lakers will have about $50 million in salary cap space.

Bryant, of course, is not among them. "We have no shot," he said, sarcastically.

>To Amnesty Or Not To Amnesty: It’s Metta World Peace Or Jim Buss

By Mark Heisler| July 10, 2013|

In which MWP becomes MVP. I know, he’s only Metta World Peace, which means anything can happen, including the Auburn Hills riot which started when he charged into the stands after a Piston yahoo who threw a drink at him… and cold-cocked the wrong one.

We all make mistakes, don’t we? Some are just harder to live with, as the Lakers will learn if they go ahead with their plan to Amnesty him. What’s so bad about cutting your most inconsistent starter, who’s 33 and would go at season’s end anyway, saving $15-20 million?

Let me count the ways:

A) The Lakers are already projecting a $75 million profit. Teams always talk about their costs but never, ever revenue. The Lakes’ projected revenue is a mighty $280 million—enough to have made $30 million after paying Dwight Howard $20 million, triggering an extra $30 million in tax… for a total of $175 million in payroll and tax… plus $50 million in revenue sharing (and $25 mill for all other expenses). With no Dwight, the projection is now $75-80 million in profit.

B) As the only small forward on an eight-man roster, Metta is worth more than an extra $20 mill in profit. Anyone who disagrees belongs in the Donald T. Sterling Remedial School of NBA Management. The only other Lakers who can play the three are Jordan Hill, a four, and Kobe Bryant, a two. If Metta is hardly all you want in an outside shooter, he led the Lakes in threes last season, and hit an acceptable 34%.

Going small, he can be Mike D’Antoni’s stretch four. Also he defends.

And, did I mention, the Lakes don’t need the money?

C) Point B, of course, assumed the Lakers are trying to win, which they’d better be.

D) Tanking is a fool’s errand. If they actually finished No. 30, below the woeful Bobcats and the newly deconstructed 76ers, who will be tanking for all they’re worth, the Lakers would have only a 25% chance at the No. 1 pick. Say the Lakers drop all the way to 25-57. Last season that was only worth a tie for fourth worst.

Let’s assume they’d have had sole possession of fourth worst….

That would have given them an 11.9% shot at No. 1.

E) Winning 25 games hardly improves “the brand” when you need it to shine its brightest… targeting LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony in 2014, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love in 2015.

F) Also has a bad effect on “your culture.” You know that thing bad teams are trying to change. Not a good thing for good teams to throw aside, as if it doesn’t mean anything.

G) It shows Jim Buss really is clueless. If I’m the one who nicknamed him “Jethro,” after Jed Clampett’s cousin, I’ve become a one of his few defenders, outside the family. Actually, given his relationship with Jeanie, I was one of the few anywhere, based on stuff Laker people told me that suggested Jimbo had learned to follow Mitch Kupchak’s lead. All that has just been called into question. The Lakers have enough issues now to challenge Jerry Buss and Jerry West in their prime. It’s a bad time for a bad call, as Jimbo is about to make. Of course, it’s his idea. Mitch doesn’t get to make financial calls.

I see an obvious path for the Lakers:

–Try to have the best season you can with a Bryant comeback and a healthier Steve Nash.

–Re-sign Kobe for reasonable dollars.

–Pursue Bron and/or Melo in 2014, and Kyrie and/or Love in 2015.

If Jimbo was cavalier enough to even think of amnestying Metta, he doesn’t see the linkage, or thinks they can lose 50 games and still be seen as the Lakers of old.

If Jimbo can screw with the plan for money he doesn’t need–like Donald Sterling–the scenario isn’t as likely as I thought.

Kobe Bryant’s intervention—via Twitter, initially—may be what has halted the process with Jimbo being asked to re-think it.

That’s what amnestying Metta means. Is there a plan the Lakers are committed to, or is there just Jimbo?

there's a real risk that LA could tank and then fail to sign a *franchise
player* in free agency because they'll be seen as a team that won't
compete for a chip until 2016 or 2017

in contrast, they could compete in 2014 if everything goes right...
and being the Lakers, things tend to go their way

Chris Douglas Roberts has a chance to get some time this year if things go right for him...

I like young Wooliridge from USC and Elias Harris from Gonzaga.... with some work Harris could be a 3/4 guy...

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- The Los Angeles Lakers announced their official summer league roster and coaching staff on Wednesday morning.

Lakers assistant coach Dan D’Antoni will serve as the team’s head coach. Flanking him on the sidelines will be assistant coaches Larry Lewis, Mark Madsen and Clay Moser.

There’s only been one practice so far, but D’Antoni already likes what he’s seen from the group of NBA hopefuls.

“I know there’s enough talent out here that’s been as good as some as we’ve coached in the NBA,” D’Antoni said.

While the Lakers rarely sign players from summer league -- many of whom are second-round picks and undrafted players -- D’Antoni said a handful of guys would have a legitimate chance to make an NBA roster.

The challenge, of course, is finding the gem that slips through the cracks.

“As coaches, we’re putting in things to test them to see if we like them,” D’Antoni said. “It’s a little bit of an experiment. It’s not about wins and losses as much as it’s to see players and make an evaluation.”

Highlighting the 18-man roster are Lakers’ second-year forward/center Robert Sacre and rookie forward Ryan Kelly, who will not be playing because of a right foot injury he suffered at Duke.

At least one of the Lakers’ free-agent big men will be remaining with the team next season, as Sacre officially re-signed on Wednesday. The terms of the agreement were not released.

“It was a unique year, that’s for sure,” Sacre said of his first season with the Lakers. “I definitely saw more in one year than most guys see in five. It’s good to be a Laker, that’s all I can say about that. But my first year was a great experience, I’m glad I went through it. Now I can just move on and keep working on my game.”

Among potential training camp invitees, guard/forward Chris Douglas-Roberts, the 40th pick in the 2008 draft, and guard Josh Selby, the 49th pick in the 2011 draft, are the most notable names.

Douglas-Roberts already has a solid rapport with the Lakers, as he was invited to their training camp last season before ultimately being cut in the middle of preseason. He played in four preseason games, averaging 4.0 points and 0.8 rebounds in 8.3 minutes per game, and developed a solid relationship with Kobe Bryant.

D’Antoni said Douglas-Roberts was the player to keep the closest eye on from the roster.

Selby was named co-MVP of last season’s summer league along with Portland Trailblazers Rookie of the Year Damian Lillard.

“We have a pretty good group of guys,” Selby said. “We have a great coaching staff that’s willing to teach you the game. I think this is an opportunity for me to showcase my talents and better myself.”

The 6-2, 195-pound point guard has career averages of 2.2 points and 0.9 assists per game in 38 games with the Memphis Grizzlies.

Other players with NBA experience include forward Lazar Hayward (three years), guard Lester Hudson (three years), forward Marcus Landry (two years) and forward Jordan Williams (one year).

First one ever, to my knowledge other than Danny Schayes having a cup of coffee in LA late in his career.

I've been surprised/disappointed by how Wes has shot the ball in the pros. I wasn't overly excited about him being a star or anything as a pro, but I thought he'd shoot the 3 at a higher % than he has so far. Hopefully he'll fit in well with Pringles offense, and shoot in the high 30's from 3. No reason he can't do that IMO. And he's athletic enough to defend well. Glad to see him get in a real organization, hopefully he can make the jump and turn into a solid pro.

But we've assembled a solid supporting cast. If Pau/Kobe/Nash are healthy and anything like their pre-2012 selves, we're going to be much better than people think we are. Farmar, Young and Johnson instantly make us much more athletic, gives us three point range, length, and speed. Kaman is whatever. He can shoot, and with D'Antoni, hopefully that can wind up being an asset. The problem is... he fucking ALWAYS SHOOTS. Like... always.

The huge, gaping issue we have is a complete lack of any interior defense though, so that's going to be a huge problem.

Whatever the case, I'm a little more optimistic than others about this season that most people are. I don't think we'll see anything close to a tank job and I think there's enough pride in Kobe, Nash, and Pau to regain some focus and shock people.

They were a Tim Duncan choke job away from getting a 5th ring.

I don't need you to list the ways they are different. I already know them, but the basic point stands: we saw an older team ride a wave of good fortune+quality play by their stars to within a minute of a title.

Lastly, second round WOULD shock people, because people are talking like this is a 38 win team. I'd rather see us fall while giving it our best rather than tank. If we were going to tank, they should have found a taker for Pau and amnestied Kobe to really start from scratch and give us a shot at a top 5 pick to add to the cap room in 2014.

No. So that comparison immediately means nothing. Also, do the Lakers currently have anyone on their roster anywhere near their prime like Tony Parker is? No.

>I don't need you to list the ways they are different. I
>already know them, but the basic point stands: we saw an older
>team ride a wave of good fortune+quality play by their stars

No, that is not even close to being the basic point. The basic point is that the Lakers core isn't going to be nearly as good/healthy as the Spurs was this year. So the comparison is ridiculous on it's face.

>Lastly, second round WOULD shock people, because people are
>talking like this is a 38 win team. I'd rather see us fall
>while giving it our best rather than tank.

Great. So we don't get anywhere close to a ring and we don't have any picks in the best draft in a decade. Awesome GM work.

>If we were going to
>tank, they should have found a taker for Pau and amnestied
>Kobe to really start from scratch and give us a shot at a top
>5 pick to add to the cap room in 2014.

Now you're contributing something productive!!!

Aging veteran team everyone has counted out that still has the core of its former glory intact? Check.

You can sit here and go through it with a find toothed comb to point out every reason why it's not a strict mirror image of the SA situation, and it won't mean a thing. The basic ingredients are there, whether or not everything is identical. The two situations don't have to be identical to yield similar results with similar ingredients.

So that's 4 contracts now, cheap or not, for players who are not good at basketball. 3 guards who have at various points all struggled to shoot 40% FG, and Chris Kaman. Haven't really looked it up yet but I bet a couple have negative win share.

We're definitely better with them but only in the sense that we have a filled out halfway serviceable roster instead of nothing

..we all know the lakers don't have a history of giving much tick to rookies, but this guys isn't your typical rookie.

4 yrs @ duke definitely bodes well, and his size & stats appear fill a few voids on the current roster. the only real question at this point would be chemistry and his transition to life in the nba.

he's a solid shooter and can play on the block, in the paint, and on the perimeter. solid ball handling and good defense.

Injuries will be his biggest hold-up. Kid was one of the purest 3-point shooters in college ball when healthy, and he's a savvy defender with great hands who isn't afraid to get physical.

Due to his abundance of injuries and his total lack of summer training, I'd be unsurprised if he didn't make the opening day roster... but a stretch 4 who can defend is absolutely what the Lakers could use, and Kelly just kept getting better and stronger every year in college. He may not have hit his ceiling.

Swaggy P to the bench...

this is the first of hopefully a couple of very much needed changes in this starting line up..

Hill replacing Williams should be next.

what Shawne Williams is doing...and he played well today.... he could do that same thing coming off the bench....

Hill is leading the NBA in offensive rebounds... and his hustle won this game for us.

that if you are ranked 30th in defense...you probably should be starting your best defensive player...

the other thing I noticed is that Hill looks great in the pick and roll....he finished at the basket multiple times and looked to be doing everything right in the offense..

hopefully he'll continue to start.
