Some believe atmosphere is safe for gay NFL player to come out

Former NFL player Scott Fujita has seen enough. He's tired of the bigotry. He wants it to end. He's not alone.

Players like Fujita, along with a coalition of current and former NFL players, and NFL team owners, a music mogul and others, are working diligently to create a safe atmosphere for the day history will happen: when an openly gay man will be a member of an NFL club. People like Fujita -- brave people -- are attempting to make the issue a non-issue for when that day comes.

And there are serious indications that day may come sooner than later. While I've long believed I would not see an openly gay NFL player for decades, that might be wrong.

Based on interviews over the past several weeks with current and former players, I'm told that a current gay NFL player is strongly considering coming out publicly within the next few months -- and after doing so, the player would attempt to continue his career.

I'm told this player feels the time is now for someone to take this step -- despite homophobic remarks from San Francisco 49ers defensive back Chris Culliver and the controversy arising recently at the Indianapolis Scouting combine, when prospects were asked questions about their sexuality.

(CBS) When will the NFL have its first openly gay player?

�Sooner than you think,� said free agent linebacker and outspoken gay rights activist Brendon Ayanbadejo.

In fact, Ayanbadejo said he has talked to several gay players who are all considering making a joint announcement regarding their sexuality.

�We�re in talks with a handful of players who are considering it,� Ayanbadejo said. �There are up to four players being talked to right now and they�re trying to be organized so they can come out on the same day together. It would make a major splash and take the pressure off one guy. It would be a monumental day if a handful or a few guys come out.�

As far as the players receiving criticism from their announcement, Ayanbadejo said the NFL is already working to preemptively combat that.

�Of course, there would be backlash,� he said. �If they could share the backlash, it would be more positive. It�s cool. It�s exciting. We�re in talks with a few guys who are considering it. The NFL and organizations are already being proactive and open if a player does it and if something negative happens. We�ll see what happens.�

I always think it's weird when an player/athlete says they wouldn't accept or want to have a gay teammate. Thing is most already do, they just don't know it. So why should it suddenly become a problem if the teammate comes out?

this is going to be one of the bigger stories of our lifetimes. it's going to be a worldwide talking point.

so it's gotta be on tv, with the journalists of your choice, and tailored to exactly how you want it.

you want all the eventual questions to come out in that time, the way you want em to, cause once the lights go off on set, social media gets a hold of it, and there ain't shit you can do about it.

I have heard a ton of former pros, guys like Barkley and Sapp, talk about having openly gay teammates, guys they knew were gay. Sapp said one guy brought his boyfriend to the Pro Bowl and introduced him as such. Of course Sapp is prone to exaggeration, but it's too common to be BS overall.

Outside of that, their sexuality is something private that is for them to reveal or not. Yes, there are external pressures to stay quiet because of the industry they are in and that's unfortunate. Slowly, that will wear down the way it has in many other areas of society.

For straight people, it's a topic where they can at once be safely "tolerant" (pointing out a super macho industry and placing blame) or "honest" about the fact that they find it weird, falling back on something like "the dudes would shower together!"

In other words, a dumb conversation that bores me.

Maybe for gay people it's a much more interesting conversation about a bunch of ripped black dudes fucking, but I think I'll pass on that as well.
